The Combined 'We're Trading Greinke' Thread (part 4)

Interesting that LHP-Martin Perez is getting mentioned as being available. If Olt is off the board I wonder if the Brewers could land the combo of Perez and RHP-Cody Buckel? It would be an interesting package. Perez is the super-high upside guy with has #1 potential but hasn't been that successful past A-ball. He's probably going to be great or be a total flop. Buckel doesn't have dazzling stuff but has very little downside, if he hits his upside he's a #2/#3 but even if he disappoints he probably sticks in a rotation for years as a #4 type. I could be happy with this type of a return but I wonder how interested Melvin would be? If Melvin doesn't figure he can rely on Perez in 2013 there isn't a MLB rotation ready pitcher in the return and I think that will still be a big priority for Doug.

Texas' minor league system is loaded. I think it's very possible that they could pull Profar, Olt and all the major league "regulars" off the board and still submit the best offer for Greinke. Martin Perez, Cody Buckel, OF-Leonys Martin, C-Jorge Alfaro, RHP-Justin Grimm, RHP-Tanner Scheppers, SS-Rougned Odor...all players that I would have interest in if I was sitting in Melvin's chair.

Everyone seems high on Rougned Odor but I only want him if he can play SS. He plays mostly as a second basemen now with occasional starts at shortstop. With Gennett and McFarland already having good seasons I don't see the need to add another player who profiles as a second basemen.

The suggested return of Perez and Buckel, I think that would be a good return though I'd prefer Olt to Perez.

The BA Prospect Handbook says that Odor can play on either short or second.

Haudricourt's latest JS blog states that the Brewers have specifically scouted Martin Perez and righty Justin Grimm. Grimm has a low-middle 90's sinker with a good curve and decent change-up. He was their 15th best prospect coming into the season (Perez was #2).

It has been said that the White Sox want Greinke bad. I don't know too much about their farm system except the fact that its considered one of the worst in baseball. What are people's thoughts on a Alexei Ramirez, Addison Reed, and 1 or 2 middle/lower prospects?

Even if he can only play 2B, Odor is most likely a better prospect than Gennett. I don't think Gennett is that amazing that he should stop us from getting the best talent Melvin thinks is available.

I think the SS to target would be Luis Sardinas. When the Rangers signed him as a teenager he was supposed to have as much potential as Profar, but he's been sidetracked by injuries (only in A-ball this season).

Even with a down year, Alexei Ramirez isn't going anywhere. Certainly not for a rental (when they're trying to compete)

When can we merge this with the topic in the main forum???

They aren't the same. The one in the major league forum is supposed to be discussing whether to sign or trade Greinke. This one is for rumors and trade discussion. The one in the major league forum really isn't even needed anymore, since Greinke isn't re-signing.

Thinking about that... I can maybe envision Melvin trying for a Sexson-style trade and trying to grab four or five of those guys rather than just Olt or Perez. Not sure how I'd feel about that, but I suppose you're increasing the likelihood that someone you get pans out.

That's an interesting thought. I doubt that Melvin would just pass on Olt or Perez if they could be had, but if they are out of the conversation he could just go for a big quantity. Those are all good prospects. It definitely can't hurt to replenish the farm a little bit. I think Doug really wants a major league ready pitcher like Martin Perez though in any deal he makes for Greinke.

it's not that our system lacks depth, it's that it lacks blue-chippers. there's definitely enough other teams interested in Greinke that we should be able to get a plus prospect from somebody else and don't have to think of the Rangers as being the one and only team that we can trade with.

According to mlbtraderumors.com, the Brewers asked Baltimore for Manny Machado in exchange for Greinke. The O's declined.

I love to hear that is our asking price. Not surprised the O's said no but lets keep thinking big Doug!

Here is the cbssports article on the Brewers asking price being really high. I love how many teams are thought to be interested.

Would Martin Perez and Leonys Martin be too much for Greinke? Just curious.

IMO no. Perez was very highly regarded entering the season but his stock has fallen to the point where several media outlets are reporting that he would be available in a trade. Martin is an excellent prospect but I've never seen him classified as an elite-type prospect by any of the experts out there.

I really don't expect the Brewers to land any elite prospect in this deal outside of maybe Olt. However, it's perfectly reasonable that they could obtain two prospects in the next tier down for a talent like Greinke. I would put classify both Perez and Martin to be in that next tier down. Cody Buckel would definitely be in that group too and maybe Jorge Alfaro. I'm guessing that most scouts would rate Justin Grimm and Rougned Odor as being a little further down the list. If Olt is off the board, I'd hope the Brewers could land at least two guys off that list of Perez/Martin/Buckel/Alfaro (preferably from Perez/Martin/Buckel as Alfaro is borderline for being on that list). At absolute worst the Brewers should get one of Perez/Martin/Buckel and then both Grimm and Odor. If the Rangers aren't willing to do at least that, then chances are overwhelming that another team out there would be able to do better for Greinke's sevices.

Note that Perez pitched against the Red Sox on Tuesday and only allowed 1 run in 6 innings.

In a completely hypothetical world - could Greinke land a prospect like Odorizzi? Part of me is just wondering what that trade is going to end up looking like. It is essentially a year and a half of Grienke, plus prospect we get for him in a trade, and a playoff run for Odorizzi, Escobar, Cain, and Jeffress. Interested to see the final tally in the deal.
