2008 Vent Thread (part 3)

My Vent -- I wish Yost would have rolled the dice with Branyan in this instance, especially given the game situation.

I agree. Branyan is on fire, Bill Hall is in the freezer. I don't blame Yost for going to Hall, but I would rather have seen Branyan get the AB. Bill Hall is almost dead to me in regards to being an asset to the 2008 Milwaukee Brewers. On a slightly positive note, I don't think Hall could get any worse right now. I just wonder if he will ever pick it up again. Hall is so bad right now, it's starting to feel like a Sheffielding without the monstrous talent.

Straw-man -- here is the definition so you can learn how to avoid this sort of statement.
What, did you learn a new phrase this week, and you're tyring to let everyone know? Can we please stop this. Does the fact that he said "all" Yost haters would respond really make that big of a deal. I think we're all (oops another absolutism) smart enough to figure out the greater point he was trying to make.

So... my vent this week is towards the forum posting police. Especially those that seemingly choose to only police one side of an argument.

thanks for the help casey. the gas pump in miller park is so out of place--i brought friends from the cities to a recent game and they thought the gas pump should dispense beer...
With gas prices these days it should dispense free beer.

Well, at least it would be considered a "deal" if the thing dispensed beer for $4.19/gal.

It's the morning after and I'm STILL fuming about Yost taking our hottest hitter out with the bases loaded and nobody out, regardless of matchups.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

You do know the saying Damned if you do and damned if you don't. Right? That is exactly what I was referencing with that. I thought it was extremely obvious to see that in the post. I guess I need to be more clear.

Mark me down for one of these too. To me it seems to be blatant condescension, which happens all the time, and nobody ever says anything.

As a reminder, this is the vent thread. People come here to vent without fear of counter-argument. This isn't the best place to start an argument about what Yost should have or shouldn't have done last night.

Sure. Please understand it's frustrating when arguments in support of Yost are based on positions no one on BF.net ever takes. I feel the need to vent about that.

Does the fact that he said "all" Yost haters would respond really make that big of a deal.

I think "all" is a pretty easy word to use correctly. I take care not to make such absolute statements.

You do know the saying Damned if you do and damned if you don't. Right? That is exactly what I was referencing with that.

No you weren't -- You said this:

"And if Yost doesn't go with Hall in that situation you have all the Yost haters out there screaming for him to be fired because he let Branyan hit and not Hall."

I am a "Yost-hater", I would have been AOK with Ned letting Branyan hit.

It is incredibly frustrating when people treat all critics of Yost like we have some sort of hive mind.

I understand that Yost is "damned" one way or the other, in a lot of decisions -- and that is part of his job. He will never make everyone happy.

It is aggravating to try and put together well thought out (but perhaps not correct) and consistent arguments about Yost -- only to have people treat me as if I (or others critical of Yost) am so stupid that all I do is wait for Yost to do something, and then be critical of it.

It's also aggravating to have someone call an argument a "straw-man" argument in such a condescending fashion that he feels the need to supply the definition of "straw-man" as if I (or others) am so stupid that I don't know what it is. But apparently condescension is allowed on these boards -- absolutism (no matter how inconsequential it is to an argument) is not.

And trust me... if anyone hadn't heard of your new pet phrase prior to you providing a definition, we could easily look it up on the wonderful world wide interweb. It's a wonderful toy that - by definition - everyone who reads your condescension has access to.

Bobby Higginson was a guy like Hall who got a big contract, then really fell off badly for a couple of years. About the same age as Hall when he did that. He did then bounce back for some better years, so it's possible Hall could too. Maybe Hall really does need the Lasik, I don't know.

I don't think the Higginson comparison holds any weight in regards to Hall.

That's his BA, OBP, SLG% in his career. While it is true that he had a down year in 1999 it did only last for one year. We are now well into year two of Hall's slump. Higginson's OPS+ in 1999 was 88, Hall's was 89 last year. However Higginson rebounded in 2000 with an OPS+ of 134. Hall's currently sits at 76.

Higginson had a pretty bad rookie year, followed it up with three good to great seasons, slumped for a year, followed it up again with three more good to great seasons, then fell off for two years before he was put on the bench in his final year.

Hall started off with sporadic playing time in his first three years and didn't play very well. Then he got more playing time and posted two good to great seasons and then followed it up with a mediocre season and now this year.

I hate how the radio shows are talking about what to do with Sheets, and how he "finally" is performing in his contract year. This guy has been a critical component to our team for many years and has done well, even though he has had some injuries. We should feel lucky to have had him for this many years and let's see if he can help us get to the playoffs this year. If we lose him after that, so be it.
