2008 Vent Thread (part 4)

Rickie's got an OBP of .322 this year. I don't care what MLB team you're leading off for, that is not good. You have to think he'll at least improve a little bit on that by the end of the year.

So the question is, why is he batting lead-off, right? Given his potential (that word again), I can understand the club not wanting to give up on him just yet, but isn't it hurting the team to have its least productive hitter get the most AB's? It's just making a bad situation worse.

My only question is who bats leadoff if Rickie doesn't? No way can you move Hart from the #5 spot. I'm not saying Rickie should bat leadoff but we don't have any other real options.

I totally see your point. I was looking at the box score this morning and thinking about the leadoff spot. I kept saying, "Not him . . . not him . . . not him . . ." all the way down the batting order. So maybe you go out and make a move for a Ray Durham? (I'm not necessarily advocating that, since Durham is old and injury-prone. But maybe there has to be someone else out there, no?)

Also, since this is the Vent Thread: Did Cameron misplay that ball in Houston with the bases loaded, too? That's two games right there where his D has cost the team enormously. (I am not sure what you can do about losing a ball in the lights, but still -- bad timing.)

Last night when the fan interfered with the ball in left field, I said to my Dad "If that was my kid, I'd have pulled them back in by the back of the shirt so they couldn't touch the ball." Imagine my surprise when I look closer and realize it was a full grown man (or appeared to be from up in the terrace). Who does that? The ball is in play, the game is close...don't touch it! I suppose I could make a similar post in the silver lining thread, because a few moments later the usher came down and escorted the guy out. That will teach him.

Something else that still kind of bothers me about last night's game -- while I'm not usually one to blame WOAHs at the plate on the hitting coach, it seems like Skaalen's philosophy has always been "keep doing what you've been doing and eventually you'll start hitting." While I don't have much of a problem with this philosophy when it comes to trying to break out of long slumps, it doesn't leave much room for making adjustments at the plate against individual pitchers. For example, last night against Fogg, it was pretty obvious he wasn't going to give the Brewers much to hit hard. FSN even interviewed Skaalen during the game, and he said something to the effect of "we are what we are, and there's not much we can do". Not exactly something you want to hear from your hitting coach when you're struggling to hit another junkballer with an 8 ERA.

I just had to say this since I am becoming more frustrated with the umpiring every day. The Brewers have had some horrible calls in recent weeks and throughout the year. Watching Cubs games this year, I have never seen 4 guys trying to give a team wins. Has this gotten as bad as the NBA where we need to try and get those "Big market" teams in? No wonder why Mark Cuban was looking to buy the Windy City Cheaters.

ugh, I never give up on a game, especially one this early but I'm calling game over and turning off the TV. After last nights punch to the gut and to come out giving up the 3 run shot and striking out 5 times already tonight I've already had enough for the night.

Branyon is a joke at third. And now that he has reverted to form at the plate, it's bench time. At least Billy can field the position.
I think you have been watching a different Bill Hall than I have all year.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

The Brewers have to be in the top five or the top spot of worst off-season moves:

1. Gagne - I was against this since his best days were WAY past and we had no known competitors

2. Mota - Nobody with a brain takes Estrada that easily

3. Cameron - I'm sick of how great his "defense" is. He has blown games on one play a few times this year and his offense is nothing to love.

4. Riske - The Reds guys have ripped this guy apart. I have a feeling we bought damaged goods. The Reds guys couldn't believe how slow he is now pitching and if it's because of an injury he shouldn't be playing.

And the good:

Kapler and Branyan -- two low, low, low risk investments. If this team seriously wants to ever make a real playoff push, they can't have such horrible off-seasons. The CC trade already makes me sick since we're going to have to trade more prospects to fill more holes to get where we need to be.

On a side note...The Reds guys had a good point tonight. If (and I hope they are not) the Brewers are "out" of it the end of July, what would CC bring? Since the Brewers traded for him so early if they're enough games back in a few weeks we could probably turn him for close to what we gave up.

While I think any talk of the Brewers being "out of it"by the end of July is certifiably insane, I am also tired of the talk that the Wildcard should be the focus. Settle for second-best and that's the best you'll ever be. This team has blown a golden opportunity this homestand. I don't give a hoot how many games in a row they hit home runs. This team simply isn't very good offensively in a broad sense. They can be explosive and they can be exciting, but they sure aren't efficient. I guess efficiency only works for "lucky" teams like the Twins and Cubs.
