Ned Yost Yay or Nay thread: Hardball Times rips Yost (part 2)

How much can you really learn about managing with crappy players? What I mean is, how much managing can you do when your backup outfielder is Chris Magruder. When your backups are several tiers below your starters in terms of talent, the choice is obvious who whould be playing. There should be almost no substitutions when the level of talent is that clear cut. This is the first year Ned actually had enough talent that he had to make tough choices.

If you look at our bulpen we have Shouse, Cordero and a bunch of other guys. Outside of those 2 guys nobody has been really reliable. We had Villanueva at the start of the year and were doing good, but he got burned out. With Villanueva and Shouse we had our twin stoppers for mid game rallies. When our bulpen went down to 2 guys we started to give up lots of late leads. Lets face it, when the starter goes bad, we are sort of strugling to get to CoCo. We really needed one of the younger guys to step up and none did.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

As a cub fan, I think everyone sympathizes with what you guys may have to put up with next year (we had to watch and listen to Baker), but in terms of our teams competing, Yost being there next year is really good news for us, because it's a little scary (to me) what a good manager could do with your team.

Welcome to the site, glad you shared that. But it also makes me want to vomit. On a goat.

The Brewers are an investment to Attaturk. He'll continue to run with the same outfit that gives him hefty returns on his investment and don't cost much. Yost will still come cheap and if he want's more than Mark is willing to give then it's Nedly's choice to leave. As long as the Brinks trucks are pulling away from Miller Park full of cash in route to AttaBank then don't expect any changes.

1) While there are plenty of sportstalk show blowhard opinions on Yost calling for his head, there are also some well educated, reasoned and calmer posters that are Nays. I respect those opinions.

2) I vote Yeah. If Melvin & Mark A think he's the right guy, I'm going to assume they know more than I do and that's enough to get me off the fence.

3) There are plenty of reasons we are a couple games back vs. a couple games ahead. Pitching (alternating between starting & bullpen), defense, a lack of clutch hitting and some questionable managerial decisions (how's that for a summary of the obvious). I hope Ned is open enough to learn from any shortcomings he may have had this year, but it's just a piece of the puzzle and I don't think it's the biggest.

4) If the Nays are indeed right, it's not like things can't be changed in the future.

I'm behind Ned and don't think it's a good use of energy complaining about him anymore...at least until he uses Turnbow 3 days in a row. GO BREWERS!!!

"There was no Internet or this other stuff they have today, with the dissection and the message boards and everything where every pitch is dissected nine different ways, and the people who really missed their calling and should have been major-league managers," (Ned) said.

I sure did miss my calling, and I blame it all on not being nearly a good enough baseball player to break into the minor leagues, much less all the way up to back-up catcher in the bigs. The problem with sports is there's a ton of emphasis on former-player status when it comes to coaching. It is borderline impossible to get into coaching or managing if you haven't somehow paid your dues playing for a pro or semi-pro team somewhere. This mindset arguably leaves many highly qualified strategists and decision makers out of the ring, therefore paving the way for people like Ned Yost to become a manager of a multi-million dollar business. Some might say a sports-oriented personality is required. Very true, and there are a ton of those people around that weren't athletically gifted enough to play at a high level. Some say in-game decision making is not as important as maintaining the clubhouse atmosphere. That could be true, with pre-game pep talking, post-game ass reaming, stroking of big money egos, and delegating responsibility. The press conference seems really easy with the Milwaukee media, so that really isn't a big part of the job. So if I could prove to be a good pep-talking, ass-reaming, responsibility delegating individual then I believe I could be considered a better candidate for the job, because I know that I would be a better in-game decision making strategist.

I feel this comment is directed toward some posters here, and it pretty much sums up why I don't see anything to like in Ned Yost right now. I bet he sure can give a great wedgie in the clubhouse though.

That's a pretty arrogant and naive statement. I guarantee you that most of "biggest fans" of this team rarely - if ever - visit this site. No disrespect to this site -- which is awesome -- but, how many people do you actually believe spend a lot of time on this site? This statement just goes to show how much of a sheltered view that some here have. Take for example, my mother. She's definitely one of the biggest Brewer fans alive. She 70 years old and doesn't even know how to turn a computer on, much less visit and contribute to this site. There are TONS of people just like her. The people that visit this site are people that enjoy blogging and the Brewers. To categorically call those people the "biggest fans the team has" simply because you're here, is blatantly arrogant.

No disrespect to your mom, but there are people that say they are big fans, and then there are people that are big fans. My mom says she is a huge Packer fan, but she couldn't tell you what the difference is between a safety and a touchback. Doesn't mean her heart isn't in the right place, just that she isn't a big enough fan to learn enough about the game and the team. I would not say i am one of the biggest fans simply because I don't go to the game 3 hours ahead of time to hunt down autographs and make friends with the ushers. However I would say I am a big fan because I know all the roster moves 15 minutes after they are announced, or know what's happening to 756, or whatever. Big fans should not get a threatening feeling from the manager of their chosen team because that manager doesn't like how people are criticizing his managing. First, just manage better and the voices you read wouldn't be that loud. Second, suck it up like a man and turn the other cheek. How hard is it to say "no comment" to the Milwaukee media - not very. Ned is either an ass or he is getting burned out, and that shows in his public comments.

That whole dang coaching staff can be sent right out if town. 40,000+ and everyone at home knew not to bring in Turnbow with a man on base. They surely knew not to leave him in with two on. And when he walked the bases loaded, there wasn't a single fan who follows the Brewers closely at all that didn't know what was about to happen. I don't ever want to see that choker pitch another game in a Brewer uniform. And that incompetent coaching staff acted just the way Nedly would have had he not been kicked out of his 3rd game in 4 days. Go see a hypnotist Turnbow, you frigging headcase. Maybe he can trick you into throwing strikes instead of peeing down your leg.
