Milwaukee Bucks Thread 2009–2010 (part 1)

milwaukeesportsfan
Yea, Badger basketball games are like that too. All the old guys can afford the good sets, and they sit on their hands. Bucks games are even worse when it comes to that. Wouldn't it be nice if a small market team like the Bucks could use a rocking, obnoxiously loud Bradley Center as an even bigger home court advantage?

I would take Harris and Lopez over Jennings and Bogut maybe.

I actually wouldn't. I think Bogut is better than Lopez and I think Jennings has the chance to be the best player of all four. In the NBA, if you have two players in two groups, you're going to come out on top if you pick the group with the best player of the four.

I would take Brook Lopez over Joe Alexander http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

regarding previous drafts.

I know the 07 was Harris's fault, but I wanted Corey Brewer over Yi.

While the 08 draft was going on (doesn't look too good right now I know) but I was hoping for Bayless over Alexander. Looking a year ahead, Lopez should have been the pick.

I admit that I'm a casual fan of the Bucks, although I do follow any game that is on TV and try to make it to one game a year. It is so exciting to have a potential superstar player like Jennings on the team, and seems to make up for years of bad picks that just didn't go the Bucks' way. I agree with homer that the attendance will come, as I'm sure I'm not the only one that intends to get to the Bradley Center to see Jennings play live. Winning is always the thing that cures attendance woes, and if the Bucks continue to win, the fans will respond in kind.

Since I don't follow basketball as closely as I do baseball and football, I'm curious as to what Jennings' reputation is defensively? I know the team overall is playing good defense this year, and Jennings seems to be a high energy player on both sides of the ball. The Bucks should heavily market home games vs. teams with superstar point guards (such as Chicago later this month and whenever teams like New Orleans and Utah come to town), to market the marquee point guard matchups with Jennings. That is, if they aren't already.

Jennings defense is characterized as being a savvy thief in the lanes, but he's too small presently to have a lot of value as an "on-ball" defender. In the Pistons game, Scott Skiles was pre-occupied with Jennings giving up 50lb. to Rod Stuckey. However, as anyone who watched that can game attest, Jennings didn't back down from any contact and was a willing blue collar defender (as evidenced by his rebound numbers, as well).

Deron-CP3. Rose-Jennings.

Why would they draft Lopez when they already had Bogut?

Alexander was the right pick for what the team needed. It just hasn't worked out so far.

So they get 48 minutes of quality center play a night? So if Bogut goes down with an injury they don't have to play Gadzuric and Elson for those 48 minutes?

Alexander was so not the right pick. He had a good 10-15 game stretch, everyone way overhyped him and he shot up the draft boards based on that. He should've been a late 1st round pick.

Also, how was Alexander the right pick when we just traded for Jefferson? That's a weak argument anyways since no team should draft on need.

Lopez or Bogut could have played power forward depending on the matchup. There's no rule that says 7 foot guys have to play center.

Alexander was a gamble, but don't forget that the Jennings pick was a pretty big gamble too. He could have easily been Sebastian Telfair. For every Jennings, you're going to have a bunch of Alexanders...nobody is going to get it right every time. Before you criticize the Alexander pick too much, remember that its generally either that or always picking "average at best" type players.

By the way, how did jennings ever get this reputation that he had this horrible looking jump shot that needed to be fixed? Looks like a real smooth, natural release to me?
It looks *a lot* better now than it did when he was initially drafted. Its obvious that he's been working very hard.

If you look at the 2008 NBA draft, there is maybe 2-3 players who were picked after Alexander that I would rather have. With Anthony Randolph being #1 on that list. And I still think their is no way you draft Brook Lopez when you have Andrew Bogut. Their games would not mesh, and that is so unreasonable to compare them to Duncan and Robinson. The only time you take the best available player in my opinion is when you are drafting in the top couple of picks. Joe Alexander is what, 20 years old? Still too early to call him a bust.

I'll disagree. In most drafts you are better served to just take the best player on your board and go from there. That said, Joe really wasn't a reach at 8. Lopez would have been the only other guy there that I liked at the time.

Only two or three? I'd take Augustin, Lopez, Bayless, Thompson, Rush, Randolph, Speights, Hibbert, McGee, Hickson, Anderson, Lee, Batum, Hill, White, Chalmers, Jordan, Mbah a Moute and Douglas-Roberts over Alexander.

BrewCityUnit: I'm at a loss. Nearly every player picked after him in the first round has either shown more potential or already better than him. He's also 23, which is a big difference than 20. That's why Jennings has been so impressive. 20 years old and playing like an all-star.

The Bucks FO obviously considers him a bust. His option for next year was not picked up. The Clips did that to some Euro stiff, and the Warriors didn't bring back Patrick O'bryant after his second year. I believe those are the only other lottery picks to be cut loose after just 2 seasons.

I am as disappointed as anyone about how Alexander's pro career has played out thus far, but he was really a boom or bust pick (just like Jennings). At the time, I wanted Brooke Lopez, but I know why the Alexander pick was made - John Hammond thought that he had the higher ceiling. I'm just thankful that on his second try, Hammond got a "boom."

What is the story on this Jennings? Is he the real deal? What is his potential, what are basketball people saying about him so far? Who does compare to?

The story? So far he looks great. He's been the best rookie in the league so far. And it's not even close.

Real deal? Way too soon to tell but right now the signs are pointing in the 'yes' direction

Potential? He max ceiling is the Hall of Fame. Literally the sky is the limit. If he improves next offseason at anywhere near the rate he did this summer then there is no telling how good he could be.

Who does he compare to? Not sure anymore. Maybe Hall of Famer Tiny Archibald? Jennings has become a good shooter and gives good effort on defense. Plus he's proving to be very coachable, a hard worker, and a very quick learner. His game could go in a number of directions.
