Milwaukee Bucks Thread 2009–2010 (part 1)

According to JSOnline they will be signing him to veteran's minimum contract, so pretty low risk move. The only problem I see with it is taking minutes away from the younger guys.

I'm fine with anyone taking minutes away from Delfino.

It's not what I would've done, I would have much rather seen us sign a d-league player like Morris Almond, or just let Jodie Meeks take more minutes at the 2 guard. Overall though, its not that big of a deal, hopefully this means less minutes for Charlie Bell and Carlos Delfino.

Maybe they're hoping Stackhouse will bring a few more casual NBA fans out to the BC?

I agree, but it would be nice to have said player NOT be a washed up 35 yr old vet. This signing doesn't make any sense. It also means we should be pretty damn certain Hammond is not gonna sell off his expirings at the deadline if the opportunity presents itself.

If that's the case, we're in worse shape than I ever could have imagined. It's just one bad move after another with Hammond.

eh who cares that they signed Stackhouse

If you're for tanking and think this hurts our chances in the lottery, I think you're overrating Stackhouse. Tanking doesn't work in the NBA either. Remember when we 3rd in the lottery with dreams of Oden and Durant with Horford and Conley as the WORST possible scenario? We ended up moving down 3 spots while Portland moved up from 7th in the lottery. Or the next year when we went down a pick when the Bulls won it from the 9th spot. When we won it we were 6th spot. Tanking is just a dumb idea. Play to win. Don't destroy your franchise and disrespect the fans who pay good money to watch this team at least try to compete.

I hope Stack can help us when we go on those long stretches where we can't score and be a good veteran influence on our young players.

What's the point of trying to compete for an eight-seed that they'll more than likely miss out on anyways? Cleveland, Boston, Orlando, Atlanta, Miami and Charlotte are better than the Bucks. Toronto and Chicago are currently ahead of us and we're currently tied with the Knicks. And, if somehow, someway we clinch the eight-seed, what's the fun in seeing the Bucks get shredded by the Celtics in four games in front of less-than-capacity crowds only to finish with a marginal draft pick?

The current trend of playing for the 7/8 seed, only to succumb to injury and general sucktitude is excruciating to watch, not to mention actively destroying this franchise. It's always been too few, not enough (wins) with the Bucks.

Here's a great quote from the immortal Herm Edwards

"This is what's great about sports. This is what the greatest thing about sports is. You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't play it to just play it. That's the great thing about sports: you play to win, and I don't care if you don't have any wins. You go play to win. When you start tellin' me it doesn't matter, then retire. Get out! 'Cause it matters."

The thing is, you can "play to win" while starting young guys that might have a future with the team. No one wants to tank by starting a lineup of Ridnour, Stackhouse, Delfino, Thomas, Elson. If someone does, they're a complete idiot. Maybe you're confusing tanking with actively trying to lose games by playing bad players quite a few minutes, but I don't think anyone is trying to advocate that. After all, it is a lottery, and basically "throwing" games would be toxic to a franchise.

We can play our young, "talented" players and still probably lose most nights. We just don't have enough talent to compete with most teams. That is completely on John Hammond. I think a lineup of Jennings, Meeks, LRMAM, Ilyasova, and Bogut is probably gonna lose more often than not. But each of them playing 35 minutes together is good for their development, and gives the FO (however incompetent they might be) a chance to properly evaluate them. Not to mention a better chance at landing a top pick in a loaded draft.

If they go out and make a win-now trade for a vet all hope is lost. I'd be done with them until Hammond was canned.

Jerry is just here to be the 7th or 8th guy and play in specific situations...or at least I hope. They do need another jump shooter (who would have ever thought the Bucks would be short a shooter).

Yesterday's loss was a hard one. I really like Luke, but him shooting a 3 as your end-of-game option is sort of alarming.

I think part of the reason Stackhouse was signed is to help teach the younger guys how to play the game the right way. It worked w/ Kukoc when he was at the tail end of his career, maybe Stack will work out in a similar way. I guarantee he has a lot of basketball wisdom to share w/ the guys like Meeks, Jennings and LRMAM.

From the "things that should have happened a year ago" department, Joe Alexander has been assigned to Fort Wayne. I won't expect him to dominate right away, but hopefully with some consistent playing time, he'll be pushing for a call-up. Really though, the Bucks should consider doing the same with Meeks now that Stack is in the mix.

I think we can officially dub Alexander as 'Vanilla Haislip' now. The Bucks don't have good luck drafting guys on the lottery based on the fact that they 'can jump out of the gym'.

Also, if you didn't know, all D-League are streamed live (for free) on the official website. So when the Bucks go down by 20 in the first quarter tonight, you can watch JA instead:

(and when that's over, you can switch over to Bakersfield-Albuquerque to see Brian Butch vs Kevin Pittsnogle!)

((edit: looks like he hadn't joined the team yet, suspect he'll play tomorrow night though))

Charlie Bell is the Jeff Suppan of the NBA. You root for him because he seems like an awesome guy off the court/field, but he drives you insane when he plays.

Comparing Alexander to Haislip is an insult to Haislip.

Very true. Marcus is now in his 4th NBA season in the NBA and has scored 25 points in total this year. He CLEARLY is much better than Joe A...

Did I mention Marcus is turning 30 this year? I know people hate Joe A...that's fine. Let's just not essentially make up things and treat them like they are facts. As of now, they both might be busts. I still think Joe A could pan out to be a decent NBA player. The problem is he's been hurt and no doubt has struggled. I'd like to see what he could do in an extended period of playing time. Maybe he would suck, but I'd at least like to see it.

EDIT - Oh and Joe A has scored something like 33 fewer career points than Marcus. Joe A is 23...Marcus will be 30. Joe A played has played 1 year in the NBA...Marcus 4. Marcus has also played in something like 30 more career games than Joe A. I think if anyone is insulted by comparisons here it might be Joe A...

I know we have already given some love to squad 6 here; but let me pile on. I was suprised and impressed at their contributions at the game last night which included: singing "love stinks, yeah yeah" and "jenny craig" at Kevin Love, chanting "Rubio" at Johnny Flynn, "eat a sandwich" and "hit the weight room" at corey brewer and "Brandon's better" at Sessions. They are a very well organized and basketball educated group. They also kept their energy level high all game; which I did not think would be possible. What a good idea.
