What's bugging you? (2009)

splitterpfj

I was so disgusted w/ the road situation in Madison I decided to write an e-mail, here it is w/ the response from Al Shumacher.

My e-mail

"I've noticed that a lot of the main roads on the east and north side of town still have inches worth of packed down snow that has turned into ice since it last snowed 48 hours ago. Some of the roads I'm talking about are E. Washington, CV, Northport, North Sherman, Hwy 30 and numerous other roads. I do not feel safe driving my family on these roads, and think that this is something that needs to be resolved as soon as possible. I realize the budget is tight, but I think the city of Madison is underestimating how bad these roads are in need of more plowing and salt. Thanks for listening to a concerned Madison resident."

Response

"We are not satisfied with the condition of the streets either. We did salt our streets on Tuesday throughout the early part of the storm up until the time that we started plowing all streets, which was midnight. There was a decision to continue with the plowing and not to pull 30 plow units away from plowing on Wednesday in order to insure that the plowing continue so that people could get out of their homes and so that emergency vehicles could travel without getting stuck. Obviously, we wish the outcome would have been better. It was not a decision based on budget.

We have been applying tons and tons of sand to our main arterials so that cars can try to get traction but the sand keeps blowing off by the cars. The main arterials are the streets we normally salt but currently can't because salt is ineffective at temperatures below 15.

We are applying a 50-50 mix of salt and sand today to try to get some traction and try to start the deicing process. We will be applying salt as soon as we possibly can to clear those main arterials. We will be applying salt as daylight appears on Saturday morning and we won't go home until the streets are cleared.

"There was a decision" - sounds like it was not necessarily Mr. Schumacher's preference.

I appreciate that the city plowed our residential street on Wednesday so that we could get out (if we'd had to) and that city services could reach us. One of my coworkers had chest pains while shoveling on Wednesday (he's OK), and I'm glad the ambulance was able to reach his residential street. Everyone seems to agree now that a "hybrid" response (I think that was the mayor's phrase) is warranted in the future. Let's hope they keep this week in mind after future snows (not to mention, let's hope that 16-17" storms are few and far between).

nobody replies to my Facebook posts.

It's probably because of Facebook's new thing where they have the Live Feed and News Feed. News feed only shows those posts that you think are most interesting. Your posts may never appear on your friends' news feeds, therefore they never know you post them.

Today has been pretty tough so far.

As some of you might know, I co-own a small group of fitness centers. Yesterday I spoke with one of our managers who was dealing with a separation from his wife. He seemed to be handling it well, at least as well as could be expected. This morning I got a text message from a close friend of his that he had decided to end his own life late last night. I guess he met with his wife and they got into a fight, and he decided he couldn't take it anymore.

I'm still kind of shocked. He was a tough guy, and served in the marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was always so level headed, so we're all just upset that he could make such a terrible decision.

Wow, Invader, I'm sorry to hear it. Regular readers of this thread might recall that a visitor to my workplace committed suicide here two weeks ago, leaving plenty of upset in his wake. It's an experience I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Sorry to hear that Invader.

Relationships are very tough business and sometimes the toughest have the hardest time dealing. I think they feel locked in their tough shell. I lost a very close friend about 1.5 yrs ago to a very similar situation. I went hunting with him all day and we had the time of our lives with no mention of the ex all day. Then next morning I get the call from his bother. That "bugged" me to the extent that I took a couple days away to be by my self, and it bugs me still.

Returning some levity to the 'what's bugging you' thread, while I was getting a haircut tonight at West Towne Mall, the S.O. visited the Eddie Bauer store and saw Jon Leuer (my current Badger basketball fave) and Brett Valentyn trying on sweaters. I was overdue for a haircut, but I'd have liked to see that.

Facebook's new 'privacy settings.'

Yeah, that and they mislead you into making your Facebook pages viewable to "everyone."

Facebook actually has an "only me" setting, but you have to dig under a "customize" link to find it.

This is a pretty major change. I'm surprised that a thread hasn't been started about it.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Hawing, I saw Leuer, Hughes and the rest of the team out at State St Brats after the Marquette game. I was out with a bunch of my friends and I thought one of my buddies was going to faint. I will say one thing... those guys have absolutely no problems picking up ladies.

I purchased an Ipod Touch for my 11 year old son for a Christmas gift. I have been spending the last few nights setting it up (downloading music and videos that he likes and some applications). As I'm going through the free apps section on itunes I was shocked at some of the racey adult themed free apps that you can download. Can't they at least put these in a seperate section of the web site that at the very least requires the user to "verify" that they are at least 18 years old? Instead these apps are mixed in with games that deal with cartoon hippos and stuff like that. They just don't belong there.

If this freezing rain/ice storm thing continues in the Milwaukee area today, I may miss being with family for the second straight Christmas.

Last year, after the 18" of snow, I couldn't drive my Corolla down our street because it wasn't plowed for 3 days.

It bugs me that the Brewers don't wear jerseys on the road that say "Milwaukee". Probably just beating a dead horse on that topic. but it just bugs me.
I remember there was a rumor not too long ago that the Brewers were considering a "Milwaukee" alternate road jersey. I have no idea if that is going to happen or not, though.

I can't believe a hospital charges $70 to stick a Q-tip 3 inches up your nose to tell you that you don't have H1N1 and then they also tell you that the test isn't really accurate so you may have it anyway.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.
