What's bugging you? (2009)

RoCo, I'm not going to say Madison is easier than Milwaukee to get around, but I'm going to try to explain why people think that. I'd argue that most people who live in the Madison area, or commute into the city as you do, have never lived in Milwaukee. They see it as a big city, and are unfamiliar with it, and perhaps afraid of it. Anyone who visits a city they do not know will always say it is hard to get around. Likewise, people who live here think Madison is easy to get around. That's because they have figured out all of the back ways around the city. Having lived in both cities, there are positives and negatives to both in terms of traffic.

Regarding the layout...the worst part of it is there is no highway spur into the downtown area. The closest thing is John Nolen, and that becomes a parking lot in the AM (I'm assuming that's the way you take to get into the city). There is only one other option from the Beltline to downtown, and that is Park Street, and that is even worse. Top those off with the occasional train that makes its way through downtown at 7:30, and it becomes a real mess. I've also notices the lack of love for left turn arrows/turn lanes, and cars that park on the street during times they are not allowed to.

Even living here, and having to take some of the major streets to go do my shopping and such is a pain. It's even worse now because every road is under construction so it seems. I won't argue with you that there are times of the day where I hate driving in this city.

Having lived in neither city, I have to go with Milwaukee being easier to navigate for outsiders. It is logical and mostly in grids. It doesn't have streets that lead you in a circle to one way streets going the opposite way that you want to go. If you know where you want to go in Madison and have been there before, it is fine. If you are trying to go somewhere new, you need to consult a map and allow for at least one wrong turn and 30 minutes of extra drive time.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Another annoying thing about driving in Madison: there are no good ways whatsoever to get on 90/94 (with the intention of going west) from the west side. If you don't want to drive backwards for a half hour, you have to go all the way to Baraboo.

Also, bicycles.

I used to go to school on the East side, which started at 5:00, and I got out of work on the west side at 3:00. I tried both the beltline (nightmarish at times) and going north up through Northport and then over, and both ways suck. Bottom line, it was a 50 minute drive at best either way.

ANother thing, the intersection of Junction Rd. and Mineral Point has got to be the most dangerous intersection in the city. I see at least an accident a week either coming to or leaving work at this location, and it's just ridiculous. Anyone going southbound on Junction turning left onto Mineral Point (with the intention of getting on the beltline) turns all the way into the far right lane, and it's nothing but a mess.

And yeah, the bikeriders who believe that they're 100% more important than any other vehicles on the road suck. The laws apply to you too, even if you don't want them to.

There are some better routes.

One would be go north on Hwy 12, go right on County Road K, left on County Road Q (which becomes State Hwy 113), then right on County Road V. V intersects with I 39-90-94.

Another would be to go north on Hwy 12, turn right on County Road P, turn left on State 113, and turn right on State Hwy 60 (in Lodi). 60 intersects with I 39-90-94.

You could also do a hybrid. Hwy P (from the second route) intersects Hwy V (from the first route). Also, each route runs you into Hwy 19, which goes through Waunakee on the way to the interstate.

Because I'm leaving from the Mt. Horeb area more often than not, the Hwy 60 route works the best for me. From Middleton, I'd choose the route that takes you over to V. Falling back on the route that's more familiar to me, however, wouldn't be out of the question.

Waiting for a call back about a job...

I was in last Wednesday (June 24th) to interview at a company that I interviewed at once before (different position, but they ended up not adding any people in that role.) I was told by a friend who works there that they are hiring for this position, and they actually called me about coming in to interview for the position, so I was originally hoping that this was more of a formality. I was the only person in on that day to interview (the previous time I was there, there were about 15 people in interviewing for various positions), so I figure they couldn't have had a ton of people in to interview for the positions. Anyways, I was told I'd hear back within a week, well... it's been over a week. I wouldn't be so upset right now, but they only start people on the first Monday of each month, which now means if I don't hear back from them tomorrow, the I wouldn't be able to start until August. This wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't already been unemployed for 5 months and I wasn't trying to save for a wedding next October.

As a side note I was drug around by the same company for almost a month when I interviewed before. So I'm not exactly surprised at what's going on...

There's nothing like spending the last three days staring at your phone, trying not to throw up from nerves.

Not really sure why NBC couldn't have shown the Wimbledon semis live. I already accidentally saw the score of the Roddick-Murray match on ESPN when it was in the third set so now I have to wait like 2 hours before it gets to that point on TV.

Workplace calls like this:

hawing: "Hello, (name of workplace)"

caller: "Are you open today?" (despite having just heard me, a live person, answer the phone)

hawing (sighing inside): "Yes, until 5:00."

If I ever resign from this job, maybe I'll do it shortly before a holiday, so I can tell the caller, "No. I'm just paid to sit here, answer the phone and say we're not open."

Internet Explorer. Can it be outlawed?

A Yuku staff member and I have been taking turns working on what would be a nifty addition to the Brewerfan/LambeauLeap board skins. She sent me some nice code, I tweaked it a bit, and it worked perfectly in Firefox, a couple of other Mozilla browsers, Opera, and Safari (which would mean it would also work in Chrome).

She checked things out in IE. Here's part of her PM. I'm sure she won't mind me sharing:

...this reminds me of every time I do a skin. I get all done, think everything is ok and then I look at it in IE, sigh.
It'd be one thing if IE simply ignored the code. We wouldn't have to provide the feature to everyone. It breaks the pages, though. Yuck.

Trying to order internet service for our new house. I can find all the introductory offers and prices without problem, but what will it cost me after 6 months, or after a year? They don't bother to tell you any of that information.

On the up side, though, you found a house? Nice.

Keeping this on track, though...everything about the CHC franchise bugs me.

It bugs me when I have dreams about work. They aren't generally nightmares, but I wake up perturbed that I let the workplace get into my subconscious.
When this happens to me, I ask my supervisor at work if I can log the hours. I don't think she appreciates my sense of humor.

I can't go golfing tomorrow because I'm missing a contact lense. I rarely wear them and found out yesterday that one is gone *poof*. I can't get replacements because I haven't had an eye exam in over a year (so said the eye guy I talked to yesterday), so now I can't golf. That bugs me.

On a positive note, now I can get those disposable ones and not worry about this happening again.

Landlord.

So she randomly showed up Saturday, told the better half that we need to "vacuum the stairs" which is common space (Cept the top part leading to us). Ok fine, we'll get to it when we can. Monday we are left with a 2 page note with random knitt picking. "You didn't take care of the carpets they are brand new [maybe a few years ago]" "you need to not drill holes in woodwork" (which we haven't, she found hooks in her storage space from the previous tenants) and other misc craziness. Then also requested we give her rent a week early.

Not gonna happen.

When I went to UWM, it seemed quite often there were more homeless bums on computers than actual students. And about 100% of the time, they were on chat rooms or looking at soft-core porn, not hard-core, iirc.

That always sucked when you just wanted to spend 10 seconds to print a paper for a class that was about to start in 10 minutes.
