What's bugging you? (2010)

RightFieldCoder

on Sunday night after the NBC game, I turned on ESPN to see some highlights of the afternoon's games. Of course, highlights weren't on, but instead it was PatriotCenter, as all they did, for a half hour straight, was talk about New England's win and interview Belichek, Brady, some other guys, etc. Finally, they went to highlights. Of course, by then I was falling asleep in bed.

Maybe they do that for every Sunday night game, but, somehow, I doubt it.

Finding a new day care for our daughter is a lot harder than we thought it was going to be. Every daycare we like is way more than we can afford. It seems like it's almost impossible to find a quality place that has openings that is somewhat affordable. It shouldn't be too hard to find.

BTW, if anybody has any recommendations on a East, north or downtown Madison daycare. I'd love to hear it, please send me a message.

"Sycophants" is bugging me. It's bugging me a lot. It is clearly the hot new buzzword amongst 15 year old bloggers that up until last week couldn't have told you the meaning of the word if their pimply little lives depended on it. Ugh.

I learned the word "sycophant" around the age 15 from The Velvet Undergrounds Murder Mystery. I also learned the words laconic and didactic from the Velvet Underground. Now that I think about it, that band taught me a lot during my awkward teenage years.

The staffing situation at my workplace is bugging me. One of my coworkers only realized last week that he has over a week of vacation to use yet, by the end of December - so he's gone almost half of each of the next three weeks. Another coworker has hardly been here for the last three weeks, after her husband suffered a freak injury and currently has paralyzed legs. Obviously she can't help that, but she had offered to cover for the rest of us during the week between the holidays, and of course that is now up in the air.

So I'm covering for two others most days lately, my hopes for time off between Christmas and New Year's are fading rapidly, and my afternoon/evening student just called to say she has pinkeye. I don't want to have to stay until 6:30 but I don't want her to spread pinkeye to the rest of us either.

I know it could be worse - I don't have to look far for reminders - but I am tiring of covering for so many people.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

i'm not complaining, but i have to work every day between now and New Years. when i was younger, i could pull 90-hour workweeks and have energy to spare, but i guess that ability goes away once you reach about 30. now i'm back to scrubbing grease off of pans and working hourly as a 33-year-old, doing the work a 16-year-old should be doing.

i'm so anxious to settle down and not move anymore, and i'm applying for jobs that not only would have me moving, but i'd also have to move two years afterward, too. ugh.

Game,

I have good news and bad news for you. First, the bad: It's all downhill from here, energy wise. I only wish I had the energy I had at 30, or 35, or 40, or even 45. If I had your energy (and a midget army), I could rule the world. Truly.

Now the good news: Life gets better and better with age. I'm happier at 50 than I was at 45, which was happier than I was at 40, which was happier than I was at 35, etc., etc., etc., on and on and on blah blah blah. I'm closer than ever to assembling my midget army and ruling the world. Truly.

I think you meant your army of little people, Nottso. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I worked 70 hours a week for 3 years, and went to school while doing so a couple semesters. That was when I was 23-25. Now, sometimes I nod off playing poker online, only to be awakened when the time warning goes off. Heck, some days I get up and immediately try and find a spare hour or two when i can nap.

My landlord disappeared. I went to call him about something with the house and his cell phone was disconnected. Looked up his home phone, called it, and it was disconnected. Drove the 20 minutes to his house and found that the house was empty. Had been sold on November 10th, in doing some looking. As for our house, I don't know if we're living rent-free for a few months before being told to move out, or what exactly the deal is. Not knowing ticks me off.

The thought of rent free living intrigues me enough to put up with quite a bit. I think you can check on that somewhere, like the clerk of court, as renters have many rights. Ask around.
I'm working on that. From what I can tell, his house was listed and sold with an agent, so it makes think that it wasn't foreclosed on.....but then what does that mean for us?

I wouldn't send him any rent...but don't just assume he's not going to come to collect it at some point. I would sock that money away in a savings account if I were you.
That's the plan. He wasn't in foreclosure on his residence, as far as I can tell, just sold it. I checked the obits and the SS database and he's not dead. I may try to contact the company he worked with to set up the lease if they have any recent contact information with him. I've contacted a friend who is an attorney to get legal advice. I don't just want to up and move and abandon the house, but I don't know what my other course of action is, other than just staying in the house and doing whatever repairs are needed and keep all of the receipts and then if he ever shows up again, give it all to him.

this is the first time in my career having to deal with a coworker i really dislike and who doesn't like me. he's 18 years old and quite bright, but also the type of smart guy who picks out the dumb guy in the group to subtly insult. i've ignored the handful of comments so far because i don't really care what a high-schooler thinks of me (i'm also new to the job and not catching on to their computer system very well), and also don't want to ignite anything, but dislike not sticking up for myself. today, when he ended our short conversation with a snide "Well, I guess I'm just smarter than you," i made the mistake of not saying anything but should have said how i don't appreciate comments like that.

I disagree. I think the best way to deal with it is to be the better person. If he's a jerk then other people probably know it too and you're not doing yourself any favors by starting a confrontation at a new place of business, especially since you're probably trying to make new friends there. See if you can get past it and if not just ignore the guy as best you can. I know I'm a smart guy, but like you it takes me a while to learn a new computer system (done it twice this year with a new job and internship), and I've gotten ragged on a couple times about it. Ask questions when you have them and make fun of yourself if it's really bad. You have a lot more life experience than this guy.

EDIT: I should stipulate that this depends on the work environment also. I worked in the oilfield for a while where everything is a pissing contest and anything short of a snappy comeback makes you look a fool, but I assume you are talking about a "real" job.

I'm watching the Hot Stove show on the MLB Network, and Chris Rose seems like the biggest tool. He's nearly 40, but he's still got the little flip haircut like he did on the show with Tom Arnold. He's always trying to yuk it up with whomever he's interviewing, and he never listens to their response. He's always smirking,

I hate Chris Rose. Put him and Kevin Millar on the same set and I have to turn it off.

Kevin Millar was just awful yesterday on the set with Rose while they interviewed Billy Beane. Bad jokes, smirks about GMs boozing it up in their hotel rooms. Just bad.

Got rear ended on the interstate last night, on the way to the Bucks game. It was four lanes of traffic, moving (though slowly), so we couldn't pull over or anything. Fortunately the damage was extremely minor. Still, you'd think when it's bumper to bumper, stop & go traffic, people would learn to slow the hell down!
