What's bugging you? (2010)

RightFieldCoder
What bugs me is when I get change back at a store and it's not the least amount of coins that could be used. If I'm getting 37 cents back, it shouldn't be 3 dimes, a nickle and 2 pennies (6 coins) when a quarter, dime and 2 pennies (4 coins) will do. I happened yesterday and today and today was with the auto change things so can't even blame it on dumb people.

Actually, it probably wasn't out of quarters. The auto-changers spit out change so that all the coins remain at relatively the same level, otherwise you would run out of quarters very quickly because besides pennies, they're the most often distributed coin.

Just spent 40 minutes watching "In The Middle" because my DVR stammers and freezes every five seconds. My VCR never did that. Let's hear it for all this technology that makes our lives easier. Hallelujah!

People at sporting events who don't think you are a "real fan" if you are not screaming and yelling constantly. Went to the Packer game yesterday. Admittedly, I'm not a "die-hard - live and die with every win/loss" Packer fan, but I enjoy watching football and the Packers are my favorite NFL team. I'm lucky enough to be able to go to one game a year. There are always these maniacal fans who chastise people in the section who are not on their feet on every play and yelling wildly. One guy actually put his hands on me and shook me because he didn't feel I was being enough of a "fan". Sorry, I'm just not that type of fan (for any sport). I tend not to outwardly express my joy or disappointment and there is nothing printed on the ticket that says I have to. Can't I just go and watch a sporting event without having to be told how I need to act during the sporting event?

I've never run into that. What blows me away is just about at the opposite end of the spectrum: the number of people who take most of the third quarter to return to their seats after halftime. I guess casual fans abound anywhere you go.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I just had a bad customer service experience. In 1997 I inherited an early-20th-century windup mantel clock that had been at my grandparents' house. I had it cleaned that fall by a local clock shop. The turnaround time for that cleaning was a few months, so when the clock needed service again in August, I decided to try a different clock shop. The owner of that shop took a look, and asked when it was cleaned last. I said 1997 and he seemed almost angry with that response, like I'd committed clock abuse; not to mention skeptical that I had had it cleaned at all. He said he would give it a good cleaning and I agreed to that.

I got the clock back last month, and it looked to be in better condition than before with a few parts replaced. I was satisfied...until the key (which I'd kept during cleaning, figuring that they'd have no lack of keys in the shop, and could not lose the key if I had it) stopped working in one of the two windup holes.

Today I had a day off, so I brought the clock back in, with the key. The owner took a key from his pocket and was able to wind the clock. He told me to throw the key I'd had since 1997 (which had worked from 1997 to 2010, and for probably decades before that while it was at my grandparents' house) in the garbage, got another key from his office that fit and charged me $6.00 for it. He angrily said to me, "If you'd brought the key before, we could have tested it then." I replied that had I known it was necessary, I would have surely done that, to which he had no response. The clock shop staff had at least two opportunities to notify me that they needed the key.

I don't know if he doesn't like dealing with women, or with anyone who's not as expert with clocks as he is (or maybe didn't like my Brewers cap) or what, but his tone was gruff at best and hostile at worst. It's unfortunate, because I prefer to support local businesses as often as possible and I would classify his work on the clock as good - but his customer service tone has made me decide to patronize some other clock shop the next time I need assistance.

Now, with that off my chest, I can reflect on the silver lining that Brewerfan went a whole week between posts in the "what's bugging you" thread.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

i don't know if this counts as advertising, Hawing, so delete it if necessary, but my father lives in Middleton and has been repairing clocks for 30+ years. he's also not a jerk:) i'd be happy to forward you his number if you ever needed anything else done.

GAME05[/b]]what bugs me: men who wear their hats indoors.
Well then, sorry, I would bug you. Never understood why it's offensive to wear a hat inside. It's another one of those "rules" that humans have made up that make absolutely no sense. Does this apply to all indoor venues? What if I'm going to a Buck's game or a Brewer game where the roof is closed? If I'm at a Brewer game and the roof is open and then they have to close it because of the weather, do I need to remove my cap? Is there any rational to any of this? Generally, if I know I'm going some place nice to eat, or some other "formal" type setting and I'm going directly there from my house after taking a shower, I won't wear a hat. However, if let's say, I have been golfing and it's 85 degrees out and I decide to stop in the clubhouse after the round...sorry, the hat is staying on.

This is right up there with the "bless you" thing for me. I know this was covered on Seinfeld..but why is this custom still in use today? What possible purpose does saying "bless you" after someone sneezes serve other than acknowledging that someone has sneezed. If you don't say "bless you" you come across as a non-caring jerk. There really is no logic to it. How can I possibly be helping you or making you feel better if I say "bless you" after you sneezed. Is sneezing really that horrible of an act that you need to somehow console the person that sneezes in some manner?

I'm pretty sure the origin is that people believed that the heart stopped beating when you sneeze, or that sneezing opened up your body to evil spirits. Saying "God bless you" was to protect the person from either dying or becoming possessed. It's just carried on throughout time. But yeah, if you don't say it people kind of think you are a jerk.

It seems that Fox is only broadcasting their sports in some sort of widescreen-only format. The scores are kept in the upper left hand corner of the screen and they get cut off for both the MLB playoffs and the NFL on my standard TV. It bugs me that I have to track the scores on-line and watch the game on TV. And yes, I sent an email to Fox Sports regarding my complaint.

You don't have an Adam Wainwright. Easily the best gentlemen in all of sports. You don't have the amount of real good old American men like the Cardinals do. Holliday, Wainwright, Skip, Berkman those 4 guys are incredible people

I think there's a way to adjust that, but danged if I know what it is. I know how to get the best settings for a 16:9 screen, but I don't know what's optimum for 4:3. Having to adjust aspect ratios on 4:3 screens is something that came along with the digital conversion.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

It's interesting that we now take the continuous on-screen score update for granted. I remember when you had to wait for a commercial break to catch the score (unless you happened to catch the announcer state the score). I find myself watching far less games from beginning to end. I tend to flip around. Some of this is due to the fact that I can catch the score just by flipping on the game momentarily, but most of it is because there are so many other options on TV now (rather than just 2 or 3 other channels).

seriously, how hard is it to find a stupid part-time job already????
Still no luck? Sorry to hear that. I know it's still kind of rough out there.
yeah, though i know i'm certainly not the only one on bf having this problem. i'm even having trouble finding general minimum-wage work--i might be hitting up McDonalds soon, seriously. all these online applications that end up sitting in the "reviewing applications" stage for a month+.

any suggestions on how to find a general part-time job? all the places like Dick's Sporting Goods and Fontana just send me back online. i check Craigslist, too. other suggestions? in a couple hours i'll be getting in the car and stopping at every place i'd be remotely qualified for. hope i don't get lost in this new city!

Find a headhunter. When my sister moved to Seattle with no job she went to a headhunter and they got her a job as a paralegal which was fine until she found something in her field.

Do you have any connections at all in your new community? I know it sounds cliche, but sometimes it's not what you know but who you know.

Most of the big national chains seem to mandate online applications these days, but I can't imagine it hurts to drop off your resume in person, either.

The revistitation of the transmission thread inspired this bug...

I bought my car from my dad just over 2 years ago. It's a 2002 Ford Taurus. I got it with just over 100K on it, and I'm up to 132K. In the time I've had it, I have done the following repairs...

Water pump

Starter

Coolant tank

Front struts

Front springs

Rear springs

Rear wheel bearings

Rear brakes

Washer fluid line

Now it needs new front inner tie rods, and I still have something messed up with my brakes. I also have a transmission issue where it won't downshift when I accelerate quickly at high speeds (when I'm on the freeway going up hill or passing).

I have put more into the car than I paid for it, and that makes me upset. I want a new car, but I have dumped so much into this one that I don't feel like I can afford a new one.

I grew up a Yankees fan, living in Jersey. I regularly post on a Yankees message board and will always stand up for the Brewers. But on bf.net, I don't feel comfortable supporting the Yankees. I'll bite my tongue because I feel like I'm being an [expletive]. This is bugging me. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif
