What's bugging you? (2012)

JimH5
This morning I bought a gorgeous 5-lb King Mackerel from my fishmonger for about $25. I got home, brined it for a few hours, then let it dry, heated up the smoker, and put it on. There was only a 30% chance of rain. An hour later, we got our worst thunderstorm of the year and I lost power. Had to bring the fish in, put it in an iced cooler (I didn't want to open the fridge), and wait for the power to come back on. It just came back on and it's finally back in the smoker. I'm going to be really disappointed if it doesn't turn out now. I think it should be fine, but I'll be up later than I expected tonight.

No WISN on Time Warner. I obviously don't watch it that much as I only found out about it on Saturday, but really? How can a cable network not carry an OVER-THE-AIR channel? I can get it for free with an antenna but not by paying? I understand how these things work, but it's just ridiculous... this isn't some expensive premium channel like HBO that we're talking about.

To be fair, this isn't TWC's fault exactly. They are required by law to carry over the air broadcasts. Hearst Television (WISN's parent company) wants more money for their stations and won't allow TWC to carry them.

This is just plain bad. I-794 narrows from three lanes to one in an incredibly short span. This looks like it was bad even before the design was changed. You can click on the image below for a larger version.

Ideally,

  • 794 would be reduced from three lanes to two further east.
  • Both freeways should merge with two full lanes.
  • A reduction from four lanes to three should occur at some point further west.

Before the change, approaches from both 794 and 43-94 had issues. After the change, the 43-94 approach appears to be OK, but the 794 approach has become terrible. The original design was lacking, but the so-called fix is just plain poor — much worse than what was lacking in the original design.

As far as alternate routes go, they're always going to come in handy. No downtown freeway is ever going to completely avoid traffic stoppages. But this is crazy.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I know the issue was about the cost TWC would pay Hearst to carry WISN, and each side blames the other over the blackout, and it's kind of a moot point because they reached an agreement tonight anyways. But how was TWC able to get around carrying WISN for a week if they're legally required to carry over-the-air broadcasts?

They got around it because WISN was the one pulling the plug. Time Warner is required to carry the station if WISN wants to provide it.

The lane on the far right (the first one to end) is actually the on ramp from... 11th (?) street, so 794 is actually 2 lanes coming through that corridor. Really, though, it could easily be cut down to 1 lane after the 43/94 split coming from the lakefront.

While yes, that 3rd lane is just an on ramp, there have been some times during rush hour, when there are heavier backups, that it is basically 3 merging into one. I get on at 6th street and so I'm in the middle lane and I try to ride it just until the merge and get in. I believe this is the way the engineers designed the merging to work. However, I get a lot of people upset with me (and others that get on at that same ramp) as if I purposely went into that lane and tried to pass everyone (although, I do notice that some people do that).

When school starts traffic increases and when we get any kind or snow that whole merging area is going to be a big parking lot type mess.

The Brewers Clubhouse shop at Miller Park bugs me. Specifically their insistence on carrying so many variations of the ultra thin t-shirts, and so few of the traditional weight shirts.

Someone also convinced them to go with the microfiber tech polo shirts at the expense of traditional cotton polos. The next guy I see who looks good in that DriFit material will be the first.

And I have been stopping by there regularly to buy a traditional weight long sleeved t-shirt to no avail.

DirecTV and Viacom's dispute + a daughter on summer vacation who likes Nickelodeon is bugging me.

I just got an e-mail saying that those channels are back.

I drove this, this morning on my way home from Bay View. 794 does go down to 1 lane after the 94/43 split. Then the 2nd (middle) lane is the on ramp from Milwaukee (?) St.

I am really not sure how they could remedy the situation, beyond having that on ramp merge well before where they are forced to.

Front Row Amy's facebook post today is bugging me...

Front Row Amy

Zack. I will enjoy each & every pitch 2day...watching thru tears at times I'm sure. What doesn't kill u makes u stronger. Go #Brewers.

Tears? Really. I can see maybe if its Robin Yount's last game after a HOF career, but to cry over a player who has pitched decently for us for under 2 seasons, but obviously is holding out for more money just seems dumb to me.

Hey, I'm only occasionally ridiculous. Don't block me bro!

What's bugging me? Having my personal phone blow up at work on Friday while I was very busy. I finally answered it the 10th time someone called when I noticed it was my mom. She had taken my father into the hospital for a possible stoke. The good news is the CAT scan showed that there was no stroke. The bad news is that it showed a giant brain tumor. Other good news is that the bullpen's inability to make outs no longer bothers me.

Well, what they could have done is left it the way it was. Prior to this change a couple of months ago, 794 was two lanes after the 94/43 split and the on ramp you are talking about (It's not Milwaukee, it's Clybourn - it's the ramp on get on every day) just fed into those two lanes. Basically, now it goes from 2 lanes to 1 lane to 2 lanes (even 3 at a small portion) to 1 lane. Even though it's not technically 2 (or 3) lanes because the "extra" lane is an "on ramp", the on ramp is so long that it's like 2 lanes. What I'm noticing more and more is that cars from 794 are moving over to the middle lane (the "on ramp") in an attempt to pass other cars and then having to merge back into the single lane. I have also noticed that the on ramp I take has become more popular as people don't want to wait in that single 794 lane as people merge into it from the on ramp (so they are riding Clybourn all the way up to 7th street (James Lovell) and getting on there instead of getting on at Jackson.)

think i've gotta move back home to Wisconsin. don't really want to. quit a job and moved here with about $4000 and between slight moving expenses, living expenses and 30 hours per week at $8/hr (pre-FICA) it just hasn't cut it. a month to find the work didn't help, either. rent was due yesterday and i need to make an excuse for an extension until my father's helping check gets here Fri/Sat--i may have to immediately ask for more since i lost 20 working hours this week being sick (they didn't buy that i was just depressed). alternator on the car just went out tonight, too--at least it's only 6 miles to work for the next few days, though at night. also a little bugged at myself right now that i didn't stretch my savings out farther; no cable tv or eating out, just too many little ticky-tack things it looks like. and just nobody is hiring at all to boost my working hours.

Hang in there, man. Seriously. You've had a hard run of it, but you really seem like a smart & good dude.
