What's bugging you? (2012)

This is kind of a 60% what's bugging me 40% random thought.

I tend to keep emails for work and otherwise going back for many years. I'm somewhat of a "hoarder" of emails, but I do file them in different folders so that I can easily search for them if needed. One reason I do this is so that if someone says something happens that is contrary to what was stated in an earlier email, I can recall it and say "No, that's not what we agreed upon per this email dated xx/xx/xx" or if someone states that they were not copied on an email, I can produce the email and show that they were.

I can already sense that people will read the above paragraph and think "what a jerk!". This is what bugs me. People get so upset and offended when you show them something that they said (and they are now saying something completely different). Why are you getting mad at me? I'm just showing you the facts? If I say that I'm going to do one thing and then do something completely different, I would expect someone to call me out on it. If you don't want this to happen then just do what you say you are going to do or don't lie and say "well, I never saw that email". I think 9 out of 10 times that means..I saw the email, but I decided not to do my job and ignored it.

I'm currently carless and taking a combination of city bus and corporate shuttle out to my job. While standing downtown this evening I became extremely annoyed with the fact that about half the cars driving by me on Van Buren seemed to be texting or looking at some small glowing object that was not in front of their car. People are going to get killed because of that. I'm sure they already have.

That's just being smarter than them. I never keep any e-mails because they can always be resent. If you do, however, more power to ya.

Yep, I agree. I would guess that the people who get offended about this are actually just embarrassed to be called out and it's coming out as anger. Some will be contrite (generally the more emotionally secure folks), others won't be.

The funny/nice thing about it is that an observer - even if that person is also someone who gets angry when caught in a lie - will usually see the ridiculousness in another person's complaint. So, it doesn't go very far, grapevine-wise.

Larry: "Doug, you'll never guess what a jerk Patrick425 was being today."
Doug: "What'd he do?"
Larry: "I sent him an email asking for the TPS report that we have to submit by tomorrow, and he shoots me back this reply with one of MY emails from two weeks ago saying that I'd take care of it! Can you believe that guy!?"
Doug: "Uhhhhm . . ."

Aw, I do this too. Maybe it's our similar mid-60s birthdates that lead us to this behavior.

At the library we allow borrowers with fines to appeal, and I keep those responses for the folks who tell us in, say, October that "I didn't know that was your policy"...and say essentially the same thing a few months later.

I have lots of old e-mail too, but I won't go so far as to say that I do it to hold people to things they may have said earlier. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I have nifty filters set up that put things into folders automatically. When I do a quick cleanup of my inbox, I can choose to trash an item, which also removes it from its folder(s). Or I can simply delete the item from the Inbox, which leaves it inside its folder(s). Once in a blue moon, I'll clean out folders individually. That's an easy process because you're not wading through e-mails from multiple senders. I can look at as many folders as time permits, and if I don't get around to cleaning up at the folder level, it really doesn't matter.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Nah I'm more mid-70s and I do it too. But its partly out of necessity, since I work with Ford and GM and its the only way to keep them from contracting themselves. In fact, most of the engineers here do that...

I waited and waited and waited to get a smart phone, and I finally got the Samsung Galaxy Nexus for Christmas, and I can't tell if it's a piece of junk or not.

I'm wholly disinterested in learning all of the little quirks in how to maximize it's use--it's supposed to be smart and make up for my laziness.

This thing sucks battery like a kid sucks chocolate milk. It often can't seem to find the wifi in my house except when it's sitting 10 feet away from the router. Doubletwist is supposed to replicate iTunes as a podcast application, and I'm getting no podcast updates, even though I did last week. Internet on 4GLTE is okay, but hardly lightning quick.

Big disappointment thus far.

Its too bad you don't want to root it and tweak it. That's a nice piece of hardware. If you are looking for more reliable functionality with no thinking/work required you should see if you can trade it in for an iphone.

Wow Jim, you sound very much like me. I got the same phone back in May. My first

smart phone as well...and yes, it does use up battery power pretty quickly. One

thing you should make sure you do is turn off the use GPS satellites in

"location and security" in the settings (unless of course you are using it for

some reason). You should also dim the display a little. If you want more insight

into what's eating up the battery..go to settings, about phone, battery use.

This stuff will help a little, but even so, it still sucks up battery

life.

I only know these things because of searching for forums for the

Nexus online and reading about other people with this phone with similar issues.

It does tick me off that the phone just came out a year ago and it has battery

life issues. Really? In 2011? That's like a car without AC or automatic windows.

I pretty much always have my cell phone plugged in when I'm at home or in the

car just so I can keep the battery charged.

Like you, I'm sure I'm not

getting as much out of my phone as I could. I basically got it so I could browse

the Internet and receive and send emails when not at my PC. But some of the

other stuff is not very self explanatory. I shouldn't have to root and/or tweek.

I have know IT experienced. Can't they just sell electronics that are fully functional

and dumbed down for mid-40's aged men like me? If I had to disconnect my

TV/VCR/Cable Box/Sound System for some reason, I would have no idea how to put

it all back together again. There are about 30 different places to plug in

things in the back of the receiver and I don't know what any of them mean.

I'm not too bad with the TV/Audio stuff when it is physical cables going to physical ports. But this phone is bugging me, and I plan on stopping in a Verizon store tomorrow to figure it out.

I don't think you and I have the same phone, as mine was just released a few weeks ago, to much industry hype. It is supposed to be the device that is at the cutting edge and sets the new standard for speed, multitasking, etc. Mine's a dog, and I don't know if I just have unrealistic expectations, or if I'm doing something wrong, or what. I have TWC Wideband in my house, supposedly also at the cutting edge. And it too is producing less than I would expect for being the top of their product line.

We had Verizon Fios in New Jersey and that was awesomely fast. And the Starhub service that we had in Singapore 4 years ago was faster than I'm getting for $100 a month here. Maybe I have lead walls in this house.

My wife has an iPhone, but I don't like how thick and heavy it is, plus the cult of Apple is a little too happy for me. I drove a Saturn 20 years ago, so I've been through the "products as emotional fulfillment" thing before. Judge Landis is jaded.

Thanks for the tips. I'm hoping it's running a bunch of stuff in the background that can be shut off, and then bring the speed up, while not sucking the battery. I can't imagine all the tech writers are getting all fired up over the experience that I'm getting.

I have the Samsung Nexus 4G that came out last May. Samsung seems to use a lot of similar names (Galaxy, Nexus) I didn't realize that there was a Galaxy Nexus. They seem to like words with X's in them.

Even with these battery issues with my Samsung phone, I just purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tablet and I like it so far. Doesn't suck up the battery nearly as much as the phone does.

Jim, are you actually disinterested, or are you more uninterested? Or are you a little bit of both? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

From what I hear, LTE is a big battery hog right now. Future iterations of the technology should address that. Unfortunately, you don't want to shut that off unless you're within reach of WiFi. Also, the Galaxy Nexus uses a full GB of RAM. RAM is great for performance, but it eats battery life.

Also, from what I understand, the last major improvement in battery technology occurred in the 1990s. It's been tweaked and improved, but something new is going to have to come along for us to see any great leaps.

I'm mostly a grouchy overreactorhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/mad.gif. . .

And I suspect that my problems are mostly with my wifi. TWC markets their wideband as "up to" 50 Mbps download speed. . .I forget what they claim will be the upload speed.

On my laptop (through wifi), I'm getting just under 19 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload.

On the phone, I'm getting 3.2 Mbps download and 2.4 Mbps upload.

When I turn off the wifi and use the 4G LTE, I'm getting 9.2 Mbps download and almost 6.5 Mbps upload.

I think I will still talk to Verizon to see if they have any "tweaks" on the phone end. . .then I'll talk to the fine folks at Time Warner to swap out this piece of junk router. . .

I heard this from a marketer/saleswoman a number of years ago. Always try to include the following letters, for people always associate good things with them. X, S, and E. And the letter L goes with all 3.

I'll let you figure out why those are "preferred" letters. Don't believe me? Check out car models and look at the letters that follow them.

Gah, these last few posts (except for Robin19's, which was interesting) are making me that much more apprehensive about switching to a smartphone - which the hawing household is finally starting to contemplate. I'd have most of my remote data needs met if Miller Park wouldn't restrict wifi to TWC customers...but they still do.

Though X seems more like a mystery letter to me. Maybe consumers like intrigue?

It frustrates me that certain sports media guys can't say Houston properly. It comes out more like Euston.....and that's not the name of the city! The H is pronounced! Annoying!
There is a Houston suburb named Humble is properly pronounced "umble", but Houston should have the h.
