Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread: 2010

11, maybe 12 Bush starts out of 34 games? That's enough to test the mettle of even the staunchest Dave Bush fan.

how i read it: Watching Dave Bush pitch is enough to test the mettle of even the staunchest Dave Bush fan. ha!

A purely rhetorical question for Hawing because she knows the area so well seeing as she works there... but why did they choose Library Mall for the President's visit? I mean, it's a wide open space surrounded by five story buildings and is currently occupied by a lot of construction material. It seems like an odd choice to me. I would understand the decision a lot better if there wasn't so much construction going on in that area currently. Either way... pretty exciting to have the president on campus next week.

I'd like to know too, BCM17. When Library Mall is unencumbered by utility work, it can accommodate around 20,000 spectators. We learned this in 2001 when the mall hosted UW-Madison's day of remembrance gathering a few days after the terror attacks. That time our balcony was available to Historical Society staff and we had a great view. This time the balcony and our whole building will be used by media and security staff.

The only criterion I'm aware of is that the visitors want this rally to be outdoors. Otherwise you'd think they'd have used the Kohl Center instead. Still, it's the first campus visit by a sitting President since 1950, so that in itself is interesting.

So, I have to leave work in about an hour, but in the meantime I have a crazy good view of the stage the President will be using this afternoon. I've been handing out guest internet logins to press members, getting a few things done around my office...and taking photos. It's interesting.

There have been people waiting outside the designated Library Mall entrance since at least 10:00. The gate opens at 3:30.

When a house is built, drywall dust needs to be cleaned up from the sub-floor before flooring or carpeting is laid.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Last year today (it's now October 5th so it works http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ) was the worst night of my entire sports life. Watching Favre beat the Packers, just brutal.

Worst sports moments:

1. Favre beating Packers

2. 2006 Calder Cup Playoffs watching the Hershey Bears celebrate on the Admirals home ice with me in attendance. Had to leave a couple minutes early in that one since there was no way they were coming back from a four goal deficit with a couple minutes left and I didn't want to watch an opposing team celebrate.

3. Packers losing Super Bowl XXXII.

4. Bucks being eliminated in Game 7 of Eastern Conference Finals thanks to some shady at best officiating.

5. Brewers being eliminated by Phillies. Hard to put this one any higher than 5. After Sheets got hurt, we just didn't have the pitching to match them. Also, it can't be that painful because I think we all knew what was going to happen when Sveum gave the ball to Suppan in game 4.

dadofandrew]Hawing, I'm not sure how that could have topped the final Sunday of the season.
They were both good. I would consider the last two weeks of the Brewers' 2008 season to be one of the best fortnights of my life. The last homestand in particular was practically a dream sequence, and two years later I still marvel both at the way it unfolded and at the fact that we were able to see so many of the games in person. For me, though, NLDS 3 gets the slight edge for a few reasons:

- Partisan crowd. There were some PHI fans, but not thousands like there were of CHC fans at the wild card clincher. There's ample evidence elsewhere on this forum of how the CHC fans who tend to invade Miller Park give me fits.

- I arrived at the NLDS with no expectations and no nervousness, which for me is remarkable. I flat-out enjoyed the entire night. I know at least a few others here left the park that night via the left-field ramp, where the jubilant chants and whooping made for one of the best sports atmospheres I've ever been in. Conversely, although I was quite happy at the end of the wild card clincher, until Ryan hit that home run it was rather stressful, for a sporting event.

- It was the Postseason. I'd wondered for more than a quarter-century what a playoff game would be like and I got to find out.

Of course, your results may vary.

Those of you who didn't catch or DVR The Simpsons tonight will want to see it when it's rerun or on Hulu or whatever. Lisa offers to coach Bart's baseball team and takes a total sabermetric approach. Bill James and Mike Scioscia are guest voices.

I don't know why they showed a baseball episode opposite the baseball playoffs, though. I guess it was to cater to me. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Haudricourt is flipping his lid on twitter about Lance Allen not crediting the Journal Sentinel when reporting the news the Brewers plan to interview Bob Melvin. It's pretty funny, but also kind of sad considering it was basically common knowledge.

Happy Hallmark holiday! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif
Oh, yeah.

I never knew, before following that Wikipedia link I just posted, that Sweetest Day is observed mainly in the Great Lakes states. You'd think Hallmark would have spread it to the whole country.

And consarn it, this means another Bosses (or Boss's) Day has passed with no recognition from my student employees. Tear.

Happy Hallmark holiday! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif

Ironically, when the wife and I scheduled our wedding, we did it on Sweetest Day that year. It was completely unintentional. We didn't even find out until trying to book flowers for the wedding, and the first shop we went to turned us down because it was on Sweetest Day! We were pretty floored. Fortunately, we found a second shop that was able to accommodate us.

So, I guess I'm lucky that I have a built in excuse not to do anything for that Hallmark Holiday, since we already have our anniversary around then.
