Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread: 2011

Quote from the making of the movie Major League...

3. Dennis Haysbert can hit a baseball pretty far: All of the actors in the film had enough athletic ability to fill the roles of ballplayers, but Haysbert, who played voodoo-worshipping slugger Pedro Cerrano, actually hit a ball out of the park during filming. Sure, it was only 315 feet but there are enough Yuniesky Betancourts in the majors now who could use that kind of power.

i'd never realized how tasty pistachios were until just now. plus since they take a bit of fidgeting to open, i don't feel like having a cigarette--double bonus.
And they make awesome gelato/ice cream. If I had to rank tree nuts, I'd probably go

1) Pistachio

1a) Macademia

2) Hazelnut

3) Pecan

4) Almond

5) Walnut

6) Brazil Nut

I once met a guy who told me he was in the restaurant business, it turns out he was a dishwasher at Houlihans. Choosing the correct title can make your job seem much more important than it is.

Walking down Kilbourn avenue today near City Hall. I glance up to see a guy about to cross the street going towards Starbucks in Red Arrow park. I think to myself.."Gee, that looked a lot like Scott Rolen". Then I thought about who the Brewer's were playing tonight. That was Scott Rolen!

Still doesn't top the time I saw ARod and Jane Seymore walking together the last time the Yankees were in town (2005?).

User in-game thread post in 1st inning of 3rd game of the 2022 season: "This team stinks"

It's so nice to turn on ESPN radio at lunch down here in STL to listen to them discuss the Brewers. Bernie Miklasz, the main Cards talking head here, has a crush on them, so it's especially nice. He thinks they're the best team in the division, if they could only figure out how to win on the road. He's been preaching Brewers all year, but also considers them underachievers, which is pretty fair to me.

two hours into my drive to a casino in Louisiana and i remembered i didn't bring any cash for the toll roads. then i remembered i'd need a PIN to withdraw cash to actually play at the casino. i don't have one (or at least don't remember the one that they gave me) and they won't give out that information over the phone. i could have gone the three hours further, got a hotel and gone to a bank in the morning, but i decided it was probably some sort of sign that i shouldn't be playing, so i drove back home. spent $30 on gas, but saved myself from losing about $500 (assuming i'd end up losing it all). that means a profit of $470 if you're bad at math, so now i'll have to decide on how to frivolously spend this extra money tomorrow. probably on booze once it strikes me that i'm waking up in Victoria, Texas.

mine is a Wells Fargo account. not only won't they let me access the PIN over the phone (was from the same number), but I can't even access my PIN by going into the bank. the only way to do it is to call them and they will mail me the number.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

i'm looking to replace my alarm clock because the AM reception on my very old clock isn't good where i live. i don't want an iPod alarm clock, but i found ($200-ugh) one that plays Internet radio stations. i don't want music, but politics and/or sports. not knowing much about internet radio, are there enough decent stations out there to make it worth my while? i'm assuming Brewers games over the radio (I'm not in Wisconsin) aren't really going to be an option unless I give MLB some money.

You know how there are things you look back on and wish you would or would not have bought? Not for financial gain like stocks, but just stuff. Half the stuff you bought you wish you hadn't, and half the stuff you passed on you wish you would have bought?

With Borders starting to liquidate their retail stores today I thought of a book I remember seeing at a Waldenbooks when I was a teenager. Don't know why I didn't buy it - probably because as a teenager I didn't have a lot of money, but peed plenty of it away on worthless 1987-88 Topps baseball cards. Maybe it was because I was sure my brother would have stolen it. But it was a unique book that would be priceless to have as a coffee table book now as an adult.

This adult-themed book would tell you to skip two pages ahead and place your fingers in a certain position on an outline on the page. Then it would tell you to turn back a page, and there were strategically placed holes in the page that when your fingers were in that position would complete a mildly dirty picture, usually making a "rear-end" in the picture. (If you put the palm-side tips of your middle and ring finger together and just look at the tips, that will give you an idea - kind of like putting two pumpkins next to each other.)

If anyone has that book and wants to sell it I will pay top dollar for it. If you happen to know the title, or know of a similar book I can buy as I'm sure this one was out of print long ago, I will send much good karma your way.

Grow old? Yep. Grow up? Never!

I was sad this past fall when I found out my favorite web radio (beethoven.com) had become a pay site. I usually only listen to local Milwaukee stations on the web. My office is in the middle of the factory and has a hard time picking up stations. I'm in IT so I just consume the extra bandwidth without anyone complaining.
