Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread: 2013

Congratulations to Nazar Kulchytskyy of UW Oshkosh who just won his second consecutive national championship in wrestling. Two national titles under his belt and another year to go. 101-3 career record and counting. Dude is incredible.

About 10 years ago, my grandfather moved out of his house. My dad and his siblings went in and cleaned out 50 years worth of stuff. Some of the stuff they found has made its way to me. Amongst the treasures...two cast iron skillets. I cleaned them up, reseasoned them, and have been using them for a couple years now. The other day, out of curiosity, I looked up the brand online to see how old they were. The particular skillets I have were manufactured somewhere between 1935-1958. That means I'm using skillets that are at least 55 years old, and could be nearly 75 years old.

Anyone see this?

65-0 High School baseball game

While there is no defending a 65-0 final score, it appears that Boyer tried – or offered to try -- just about every alternative at his disposal to minimize the damage. At one point Boyer claims he went to the game’s home plate umpire and offered to have his players bunt and then step on the plate to guarantee an out.

While the umpire's response to this is a joke, how about just purposely swinging and missing at everything? It really is not that hard to purposely make outs, even if the opposing pitchers have no control. If you swing and get hit by a pitch it's still a strike. If the winning team is incapable of doing this then the losing team's coach should have forfeited long before it got anywhere near 65-0. I would have been audibly upset if I was a parent in the stands (regardless of what team my son played for).

The pitchers for the losing team hit 11 guys with a pitch. Sounds like just standing in the box to take a swing and miss would be an adventure. I can't fault the winning team it sounds like they tried to get the game stopped or offered to make outs but the ump and losing team kept going. Clearly the losing team has no business playing the other team and maybe shouldn't do much more than scrimmage themselves if they are truly this bad.

I never really fall for the blame the victors approach unless it is pretty egregious running up the score like leaving the best players in and throwing bombs going for it on 4th down stuff in football. I lost in a softball tourney subbing for a team once 40-5 in 3 innings, it was a drubbing but I survived it, sometimes you just have to admit a team is way better than yours, but it doesn't cause some long lasting harm. A sure causes less harm than swinging at a pitch that hits you just to take a strike from an awful pitcher. I'd be more mad at my kid getting drilled just to saving little Timmy's ego on the other team. Whether a team steps on the plate to take the outs or swings to take outs, the losing team knows they got trucked and are horrible in comparison so no one's feelings are really being protected. There are soccer leagues that don't keep score but the kids still know who won, who is good, who is terrible, etc.

Sorry, have to disagree with you MJ. Even if you assume that all 11 guys that got hit scored and you take those runs away, it's still 54-0. This isn't some beer league softball game being played by grown men. This was a HS game.

It couldn't have been that adventurous at the plate if they were willing to square around and bunt. My guess is that the losing team pitchers were not really throwing that hard and that none of the 11 HBP caused any serious harm.

Why do you think there is a mercy rule after 5 innings? Because it's pointless to continue the contest after that point when there is a 10 run difference. It serves no purpose. I don't know how any reasonable person could think that a game that is 25-0, 30-0, 35-0 after a couple of innings is worth continuing. Maybe it does not do any "long lasting harm", but no one really wants to continue playing the game at that point.

I won't argue against the thought that perhaps the losing coach was more to blame than the winning coach. He clearly should have just forfeited by at least the 25-0 mark. Perhaps he could have talked the other coach into letting his team take some "batting practice" off of their pitchers for a half hour or so.

I coached youth baseball games for the last 10 years. I have been involved in games where there has been a 20 run difference one way or other. I remember one particular instance where we were about to bat around for the 3rd time in an inning and even the young boys on the team I was coaching had enough sense to just go up and swing at anything (and even miss on purpose) without being told to do so.

Yes there were 11 hit batters, but keep in mind there were also 48 hits. I don't see how any team in that situation could continue to go up to the plate and try to time pitches. If for no other reason, make outs on purpose to give your pitchers some work and to let the other team have some ABs.

As long as the winning coach emptied his bench I have no problem with it. I would have a problem with the winning coach if he told his players to purposely try and make outs though. That helps no one

Why? I'm not saying it "helps" anyone, but but continuing to pile on hit after hit and run after run does not help anyone either. Like I said, at the very least you are allowing your pitchers a chance to throw and their hitters a chance to get some ABs.

There is way too much macho bs in the whole "well I'm not going to have my guys purposely make outs" crap. Use some common sense. If either side was actually having fun during that debacle they need to have their heads examined.

There's no machismo involved. I'm a high school coach and last year I had a really good team with great pitching and a great offense. There were games last year that did get pretty boring as we were up by 6 or so after 2 innings and 10 runned the other team easily. Yes, it was boring and eventually wasn't fun anymore but I would never have told my players to stop trying.

As a player I've been on the other end of that a few times. Games I lost by 20 or more and the most embarrassing part isn't the score it's when the other team stops trying. When a batter hits a ball in the gap and the runners just walk to the next base I felt that was a slap in the face more than them playing it out.

10 or 20 runs is a little different than 65 runs. Like I said in a previous post, I coached youth baseball for the last 10 years (my son is now a Freshman in HS), once a team got up by 10 or more runs it was always station to station after that..no stealing, no advancing on a wild pitch. It wasn't a rule, it was just common sense.

It's clear we are not going to agree on this. However, having said all this, even if the winning team was trying their hardest and had all their starters in there the whole game, I still can't fathom how you can score 65 runs. It wasn't like the pitchers were incapable of throwing a strike. There were 48 hits. Even the MLB players in the HR derby hit weak grounders, pop ups, and routine fly balls with pitches being thrown in their wheel house. No matter how bad you are, as I HS baseball player I would hope you would at least have the ability to catch a fly ball or pop up.

In a blowout, you can stop bunting, eliminate the hit and run, eliminate steals, and eliminate any attempts to take an extra base (e.g. attempting to stretch a double into a triple). In other words, you can cut out any smallball and any extra aggressiveness. You can't stop solid contact, and you can't forgo the "typical" outcome of putting a ball in play.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Clearly you've never witnessed any of my attempts at baseball, because I assure you that I can do all of the above, in craptacular fashion.

I love V-8 juice! I have a can every morning. Not only do I get several servings of veggies but I also get 38% of my daily sodium intake. So I got that going for me, which is nice.

FWIW, there is reduced-sodium V-8.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Ya Hawing, I know I know. My wife informs me of that too ;) I think I'll give it a run, but it's not as good as the real thing. At least I'm having this debate instead of weather or not I should be drinking diet or regular Mt Dew, or something like that.

That bomber wastrel calmly left that bomb beside a bunch of 8 year old kids and strolled away casually. I could put my hands on his neck and look him right in the eye as I slowly strangle him,

Ever try V8 V-Fusion? Love that stuff, a serving of fruits and veggies in every 8 ounces, and almost no sodium. Tastes just like fruit juice, can't even taste the veggies.
