Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread: 2013

JimH5

As a church musician, I can kind of understand it. Many churches today don't use the organ. Agreed or not, the guitar is the instrument of choice, acoustic or not. Most hymns were arranged with a chord per note. That's a lot for guitarists. Using more modern chord progressions, slowing the progressions down a bit, sometimes makes it work. But, it's the great part about music. Everyone has their own opinion. One is not better than another.

That seems understandable to me. The instrument is going to require you to make modifications to the way the song is played.

There is also stylistic interpretations as well. One of the current "trends" in worship music today is taking old hymns and writing new parts to it. Chris Tomlin does this repeatedly. Some are good, some are OK, some are.....not that OK. It makes them newer, accessible and in the eyes of some, better. I wouldn't say better, I'd say different. Gives a different track to think about in relation to the lyrics.

How can the IOC eliminate wrestling as an Olympic sport? It was a main event at the original Olympics in ancient Greece for heaven's sake. Other similarly "good" ideas would be eliminating outfielders in baseball, hockey in Canada or the forward pass in football. Idiots.

Well at least they kept the modern pentathlon.

It decided to cut wrestling and keep modern pentathlon -- a sport that combines fencing, horse riding, swimming, running and shooting -- and was considered to be the most likely to be dropped.

This is very shocking to say the least.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

My guess is that this decision, like many decisions in this world, was financially based (TV ratings, crowd sizes, etc).

With the increasing lack of attention span of the general public (especially in the U.S.), I have all sorts of fears about the future of the Olympic games. Over the past 10 or 20 years the games seem to have become more about human interest stories than about the athletic competition itself.

That might be so but if the NCAA is any indication not likely. Wrestling is the only sport other than basketball and football that consistently makes a profit in college athletics. It traditionally has a strong following in the eastern European countries as well as Asia and the Pacific rim. In the US it is not huge but not small by any means. The typical wrestling fan is very dedicated to the sport.

Not to mention it has very little cost associated with it so poorer countries can stay competitive. A mat, singlet and a pair of shoes is about all it takes equipment wise.

And Yes Hawing I'm sure Barry is livid. As is pretty much everyone who ever stepped foot on the mat.

I do mostly web design and development. And yes, I've taken days off, but I factor those in as paid days off. It was the first day that was meant to be a working day that I didn't have any client work to do, thus, no money to be made for the day.

I spent the day working on a new website for myself instead, so it was still worthwhile.

My birthday is Monday and the S.O. hasn't asked what I might like to do or like as a gift. Based on past years, this means there's about a 1% chance he's already got something ready and a 99% chance he hasn't and will suddenly start thinking about it sometime this weekend. Yet he always seems concerned that I have some gift to open on my birthday. So if I were deeply into both materialism and strategy, I could wait for him to get around to asking about it, name some big-ticket item and probably get it (as long as it was in stock by Monday).

It's not bad. He's just not a think-ahead guy for things like this.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Does anyone else have the problem of JSOnline not updating? I usually keep it up all day for blogs and what not and when I hit refresh everything except the blogs will be updated. It's quite annoying.

This didn't dawn on me until today, but the guy who did the iconic "Warriors come out to play" scene in "The Warriors" and was also "weasly" bad guy in "48 Hrs" had the same character name in both films...Luther. I'm guessing there was some purpose to that and that maybe you were supposed to believe that it was the same character in both films. Those were two great and very similar roles.

2 of my favorite movies of all time. The Warriors is my favorite period! I can watch that movie anytime and still love it!

I noticed that a long time ago, but didn't really think that the 48 hours character was a later version of the Warriors character, just chalked it up as coincidence.

It's possible, but doubtful.

Maybe it's like that thing where Tony Danza can only play characters named Tony. He was also one of the bad dudes in Commando but his name wasn't Luther.

This is Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.

Also, this from "The Warriors" Wikipedia page:

President Ronald Reagan was a fan of the film, even calling the film's lead actor, Michael Beck, to tell him he had screened it at Camp David and enjoyed it.

Reagan, a fan of "The Warriors"? Really? Who knew?
