Voice of the Helena Brewers Steve Wendt is back on board, and this year he's added Twitter to the mix @steve_wendt. We've been treated to Steve's work for many years now (ten!); he is among the very best at the art of the pre-game interview, especially considering how at ease he makes all these first-time professional ballplayers.

Final: Helena 7, @Billings 0

One-hitter!

Not much detail online, but this is from the Billings Gazette --

Helena starter Tyler Linehan pounded the strike zone through six innings, and gave up just the one hit to Washington in the fourth. The left-handed Linehan (2-2) finished with seven strikeouts and one walk. Reliever Eduard Reyes gave up a harmless walk in three innings to earn a nine-out save. Reyes struck out five.

“They both threw exceptionally well,” Kelly said. “Linehan set the tone. He ran some deep counts, but he made some really good 3-2 pitches and just didn’t give up any hits.”

The Brewers’ Michael Ratteree, the league’s newly crowned MVP, went 3 for 5 with three singles. He scored two runs and had the game’s first RBI.

Ratterree attempted a sacrifice bunt in the eighth inning, and the ball appeared to be going foul down the first-base line. But Mustangs pitcher Robert Lewis-Walker picked it up in fair territory, which loaded the bases. The Brewers scored four runs in the inning.

Crooked Numbers: Know your rules

Know your rulebook: Previous 2013 editions of this column have cited Rules 6.07 and 10.06 as a means to explain seemingly incomprehensible on-field events, and this month it has become necessary to direct your attention to Rule 6.02 ©:

If the batter refuses to take his position in the batter's box during his time at bat, the umpire shall call a strike on the batter. The ball is dead, and no runners may advance. After the penalty, the batter may take his proper position and the regular ball and strike count shall continue. If the batter does not take his proper position before three strikes have been called, the batter shall be declared out.

Rule 6.02 © did indeed come into play during Aug. 1's game between Midland and Corpus Christi, as Midland's Vinnie Catricala managed to strike out on one pitch while leading off the top of the sixth. That pitch was delivered by Nick Tropeano, a slider on the outside corner that umpire Ron Teague called a strike. Catricala, clearly not in accord with this call, stepped out of the box and ignored Teague's instruction to return. Teague then called an automatic strike two and, after Catricala again failed to return to his "proper position," called strike three and sent an incredulous and no doubt incensed Catricala back to the dugout.

One pitch, three strikes, one out. Just another day in Minor League Baseball:

"You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation."

"Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something."
