Garza delivers Rattlers win with walkoff double

Wisconsin tops Kane County 8-7

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Victor Roache gives Mike Garza a bearhug after Garza's game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the ninth on Tuesday afternoon.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Mike Garza kept the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on a hot streak. Garza knocked in the winning run with a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning for an 8-7 victory over the Kane County Cougars on Tuesday afternoon. The victory was the third straight for Wisconsin and their fifth win over their last six games. Wisconsin's seventh "walkoff" win of the season also kept their playoff hopes alive heading into the final two series of the regular season.

The teams kept trading runs in the early innings.

Kane County (52-77 overall, 22-41 second half) got on the board in the first inning. Giuseppe Papaccio reached on an error with one out. Jeimer Candelario doubled to put runners on second and third. Rock Shoulders followed with a single to drive in Papaccio.

The Rattlers (59-70, 30-34) loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Garza's hard grounder to short was bobbled for an error to let Alfredo Rodriguez score from third.

Kane County went back in front in the top of the second inning. Oliver Zapata's run scoring fielder's choice drove in the first run of the inning. Pappacio followed with an RBI single for a 3-1 lead.

The Rattlers responded with three runs on no hits in the bottom of the second. Dustin Houle drew a walk and the Cougars committed an error on a double play ball off the bat of Chris McFarland. Rodriguez was asked to bunt and he made a good one up the third base line for a sacrifice. Papaccio threw to first, but no one was covering the base. The ball rolled down the line in right allowing Houle and McFarland to score and Rodriguez to take third base. Tyrone Taylor put the Rattlers up 4-3 with a sacrifice fly.

The Cougars came right back to tie the game in the top of the third. Carlos Escobar singled and Marco Hernandez doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. A single by Jose Dore drove in Escobar. The inning could have been much worse. Rattlers starting pitcher Jorge Lopez hit Reggie Golden to load the bases with no outs. But, a shallow fly to right and a 1-6-3 double play ended the inning without another crossing the plate.

Houle and McFarland started another Wisconsin rally in the bottom of the fourth. Houle singled and McFarland walked to chase Kane County starting pitcher Nathan Dorris from the game. Rodriguez greeted reliever Justin Amlung with a bloop single to center to load the bases. Michael Reed grounded into a 4-3 double play to get the lead run home. Taylor followed with an RBI single to knock in McFarland for a 6-4 advantage.

Lopez got the first two outs in the top of the fifth. But, Dore doubled to extend the inning. Then, Golden lined a home run just to the right of the batter's eye. The two-run shot tied the game 6-6.

Houle started another rally for Wisconsin with a leadoff double to the gap in right center in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Matt Iannazzo. An error on the play - the sixth error of the game charged to Kane County - allowed him to take third base. Michael Haman took over for Iannazzo and got the first out. Then, Taylor sent a fly ball to center that was deep enough to score Houle from third with the run to put the Rattlers up 7-6.

But, Kane County came back to tie the game in the top of the ninth. Jeimer Candelario worked the count to 3-2 against Jono Armold and hit a leadoff homer to right to make the score 7-7.

Taylor started the Wisconsin ninth with a bunt single. Hamann got the next two outs to bring Garza to the plate. Hamann made several throws over to first base to try and keep Taylor close. Taylor took off on a 1-1 pitch and Garza lined that pitch into the right field corner. Taylor cruised home and the Rattlers celebrated the win..

The Timber Rattlers moved to within 1-1/2 games of the Clinton LumberKings for the second half Western Division Wild Card spot. Clinton plays at Beloit on Tuesday night at 7:00pm. A loss by Clinton let the Rattlers move to within a game of the LumberKings with six games remaining in the regular season.

The Timber Rattlers welcome the Quad Cities River Bandits to town on Wednesday night. Austin Ross (2-0, 2.79) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Quad Cities has sends Chris Devenski (3-3, 4.82) to the mound. Game time is 7:05pm.

The final magnet in a series of four from Lamers Bus Lines features Milwaukee Brewers All-Star Outfielder Carlos Gomez and the first 500 fans to attend Wednesday's game will receive this collectible. Wisconsin Boxscore

It's nice that the Cubbies handed the Rattlers the game with 5 unearned runs via 6 errors, but I'll take a walk-off win against any Cubs' affiliate any day of the week.

Jorge Lopez peaked from runs standpoint in June and from a baserunners standpoint in July, but has leveled off recently.

Nashville's Morris Goes Yard In Loss; Velez Streaks to 16

Prince Homers, Velez Extends Pair Of Streaks For Nashville

Nashville Sounds

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Nashville Sounds came up one run short in Tuesday night's contest at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, losing 5-4 to the Oklahoma City RedHawks, who claimed the American Southern Division and a postseason berth as a result.

Down 4-1, the Sounds strung together a two-run two-out rally in the sixth inning courtesy of a triple from Nashville second baseman Eugenio Velez, 2-for-4.

Velez's extra-base knock extended his hit streak to 16 games, the longest by a Sounds batter this season, and scored Hainley Statia, 2-for-3, who dropped a ball just fair for a single to lead off the inning. Velez scored the second run of the inning on a passed ball charged to Carlos Perez to pull with one of Oklahoma City.

Trailing by two in the eighth inning, Velez produced another two-out RBI knock for Nashville to again pull within one of the RedHawks. Unfortunately for the Sounds, his single into right field that scored Statia marked the team's final run.

Sounds first baseman Hunter Morris put the team up 1-0 in the second inning with his 23rd home run of the season.

The Sounds have recorded a home run in each of their last seven games to match the club's longest stretch this season, previously occurring from July 3 to 10.

The RedHawks worked four of their runs off Sounds starting pitcher Zach Kroenke (5-16). Outfielder George Springer led off the third inning with a triple and was driven home by Brandon Laird's single. Kroenke surrendered another single in the frame before walking the bases loaded. He proceeded to deliver a bases-loaded walk to give Oklahoma City the go-ahead run.

A sacrifice fly from Marc Krauss in the fourth and Japhet Amador's RBI-single in the fifth put the RedHawks out to a 4-1 lead.

Oklahoma City's Jimmy Paredes singled in the seventh inning off of Sounds reliever Tim Dillard, who logged to innings out of the Nashville bullpen. Paredes stole second base, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a chopped ground out towards third base for the RedHawks final run.

Travis Webb also pitched for Nashville, twirling a perfect sixth inning.

Oklahoma City's Eric Berger (6-3) picked up the win, holding Nashville to one run on two hits over five innings of work. Jorge De Leon notched the save, his sixth.

The Sounds will play their penultimate road game of the season Wednesday night against the Oklahoma City RedHawks at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Throwing for Nashville will be RHP Alfredo Figaro (0-0, 3.38) opposite Oklahoma City's RHP Asher Wojciechowski (9-6, 3.48). Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Friday, August 30, for the team's final homestand of the season.

Final: Mississippi 4 Huntsville 3

The Huntsville Stars final road game in the 2013 season ended with a thud as Mississippi broke a tie late and squeaked out a 4-3 victory Tuesday night. Righty Brooks Hall started for the Stars. He brought with him a streak of 17 consecutive scoreless innings. He was unable to add to that as Mississippi scored twice in the first. He would allow another run in the third before departing. His line was 3 innings pitched, 3 runs, all earned on 6 hits and 1 walk. He did not strike anyone out. Hall threw 64 pitches, 33 for strikes and had a 4-1 GO/FO ratio. He wound up with a no decision.

Behind Hall, the Stars bullpen pitched 5 innings or relief. Casey Medlen gave the Stars 2 innings of scoreless relief, working the 4th and 5th. He allowed 2 hits and a walk but did not allow a run. Arcenio Leon and David Goforth each worked 1-2-3 innings for Huntsville tonight. Kevin Shackelford was summoned to work the 8th. He ended up allowing an unearned run on 1 hit and 1 walk and was tagged with the loss. As the run he allowed was unearned, his ERA dropped to 1.03.

Jason Rogers reached base 3 times, going 1-2 and drawing 2 walks. He also score a run. Third baseman Mike Walker singled and drew a walk to reach base twice. He also scored a run. Chadwin Stang singled and stole a base tonight. Brock Kjeldgaard had the Stars other hit, a 2 out, 2 run single in the 6th to tie the game.

Final: Helena 8, @Grand Junction 4

Helena box score

Adam Giacalone, Clint Coulter, and Jose Pena all went deep for the Brewers, and Nathan Orf cracked two doubles. Pena also doubled, and Michael Ratterree tripled and was hit by a pitch.

Trevor Seidenberger made his first start and allowed only two runs in four innings. Brandon Moore followed with four innings of one-run ball. They got a lot of help from their defense, though; between them they struck out precisely zero Rockies.

The Timber Rattlers moved to within 1-1/2 games of the Clinton LumberKings for the second half Western Division Wild Card spot. Clinton plays at Beloit on Tuesday night. A loss by Clinton let the Rattlers move to within a game of the LumberKings with six games remaining in the regular season.

Clinton, a Mariners farm team, were shut out 2-0, their 6th straight loss.

But remember, the Timber Rattlers must finish a game ahead of Clinton because Wisconsin loses the head-to-head tiebreaker. So, in effect, the Rattlers must pick up two more games with six remaining. Still exciting, though.

Stars Drop Road Finale

By Matthew Raines, Huntsville Stars

Pearl, MS. – The Huntsville Stars, looking to salvage a disappointing season, played their final road game of the season against the Mississippi Braves on Tuesday. Huntsville fell behind quickly before coming back to tie the game in the sixth. Unfortunately for the Stars, Mississippi managed to scratch a run across late and escaped with a 4-3 win, leaving the Stars to finish the year 30-37 away from Joe Davis Stadium.

With the score tied at three in the bottom of the eighth, Robby Hefflinger grounded a ball to shortstop Hector Gomez who misplayed it, allowing Edward Salcedo to score the winning run. Mississippi pitcher Pat Egan (former Brewers Rule 5 selection - MH) then came on and nailed down the win, keeping the Braves playoffs hopes alive and dealing the Stars another heartbreaking loss.

After the Stars stranded runners at the corners in the top of the first, the Braves got three straight hits to begin the inning plating Mycal Jones, followed by a double play that scored Christian Bethancourt, making the score 2-0 Braves going to the second inning. Mississippi added another run in the bottom of the third when Salcedo got on base thanks to a fielder’s choice, stole two bases and was then singled home by Jose Martinez and the Braves looked to be cruising.

The Stars though had life left in them. In the top of the sixth inning, Chadwin Stang singled to get on base. After two flyouts, Stang stole second. Jason Rogers and Mike Walker both walked to load the bases. That ended the night for Mississippi starting pitcher Mitch Atkins who gave way to Shae Simmons. With Brock Kjeldgaard at bat, Simmons threw a pitch to the backstop, allowing Stang to score. Kjeldgaard then singled to left, bringing in Rogers and Walker. This tied the score at three going into the bottom of the sixth.

Huntsville starter Brooks Hall left after the third inning, having giving up three runs on six hits while throwing 64 pitches. Kevin Shackelford (L 1-1) took the loss after giving up one unearned run on one hit and a walk in an inning of work. The Stars bullpen was heavily taxed again, with four pitchers combining to pitch the final five innings, though they only gave up a single unearned run and three hits after Hall left.

Mississippi pitcher Gary Moran (W 4-2) got the win after pitching two innings, giving up one hit and a walk. The Braves were led at the plate by Salcedo who went two for four with two runs scored.

The Stars were led at the plate by Nick Shaw who went two for four and Rogers who went one for two with a run scored and two walks.

With the loss, the Stars record stands at 56-77 on the year, 27-38 in the second half of the season. The Braves record moves to 74-60 on the year, 36-28 in the second half.

The Huntsville Stars and Mississippi Braves will observe a league wide off-day on Wednesday. The Stars will then begin their final home series of the year on Thursday. The Stars will take on the Jackson Generals in the final series of the year for both teams as the North Division playoff teams have already been decided.

VIERA, Fla. - Working out of jams all night, the Brevard County Manatees stranded a season-best 16 opposing runners on base en route to a 4-1 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

The Flying Tigers broke through just once against the Manatees (28-34 second half, 65-64 overall) and starting pitcher Tyler Cravy (4-2, 2.08 ERA), as Lakeland (29-28, 59-66) scored an unearned run in the fifth inning.

Dean Green reached on a strikeout with a wild pitch and then advanced to second on a passed ball. From there, he scored on a ground-rule double from Steven Moya.

Cravy took a no-decision as he struck out seven men with just one walk in five innings, while yielding seven hits. With just the unearned run allowed, Cravy lowered his ERA to 1.29 in his nine starts this season.

Brevard County didn't get on the board until the sixth, when D'Vontrey Richardson scored the tying run after a reach on a one-out single. Yadiel Rivera then hit a ground-rule double to left and Nick Ramirez's single to center would end up scoring Richardson.

An inning later, T.J. Mittelstaedt drew a two-out walk and then scored from first on Ben McMahan's double to left.

Matt Miller was credited with the win as he allowed two hits and three walks in two innings of work. Tommy Toledo picked up a six-out save and allowed just one hit to earn his 19th save of the year.

Cameron Garfield provided a two-run double in the eighth to pad the lead, scoring Ramirez and Mitch Haniger.

Ramirez was the only Manatee with multiple hits, though eight of the nine men in the lineup hit safely.

The final game of the season series between Brevard County and Lakeland is scheduled to get under way at 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday. Damien Magnifico (0-2, 5.70) will make the start for the Manatees against Tommy Collier (3-3, 4.42) for the Flying Tigers.
