Final (game one): @Grand Junction 3, Helena 2 (8 innings)

Helena box score

The Brewers coughed this one up by allowed the tying run in the 6th and the the winning run in "extras". Anthony Banda nevertheless went seven pretty strong innings, allowing the two runs on four hits with a 4/2 K/BB and a 10/1 GO/FO. Banda, who turned 20 a couple weeks ago, is having a decent, under-the-radar kinda year, at least from my perspective (he may be more or less under the radar for those of you who listen to Steve regularly). Anybody got a pro scouting report on him? Andy Hillis picked up the loss, but his microscopic ERA was preserved by the winning run being unearned.

Michael Ratterree had two hits, including his 12th homer. Banda's roommate, Jalen Harris also had two knocks and has quietly put up a nice August to really boost his numbers (.350/.409/.450 in August, .289/.348/.389 overall)--of course he's also struck out 20 times in 60 August ABs, so his >.500 BABIP is probably not something you want to count on going forward. Clint Coulter was 0-4.

Helena play-by-play

Grand Junction Bottom of the 8th

  • Pitching Change: Andy Hillis replaces Anthony Banda.
  • Wesley Jones grounds out to first baseman Jalen Harris.
  • Terry McClure singles on a ground ball to right fielder Michael Ratterree.
  • Raimel Tapia grounds into a force out, first baseman Jalen Harris to shortstop Angel Ortega. Terry McClure out at 2nd. Raimel Tapia to 1st.
  • Cesar Galvez singles on a ground ball to pitcher Andy Hillis. Cesar Galvez to 2nd. Raimel Tapia advances to 3rd, on a throwing error by pitcher Andy Hillis.
  • Ryan McMahon singles on a ground ball to shortstop Angel Ortega. Raimel Tapia scores. Cesar Galvez to 3rd.

Final: Mississippi 2 Huntsville 1

The Huntsville Stars wasted a decent pitching performance from starter Ariel Pena and 2 relievers, losing 2-1 to the Mississippi Braves Monday evening. Pena (7-9, 3.87) was tagged with the loss despite only allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5 over 5 innings. It was his 4th straight decent outing. Pena threw 81 pitches, 46 for strikes and posted a 3-3 GO/FO ratio. After Pena departed, righty Greg Holle came on to work 2 scoreless innings. He allowed 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 2. Righty Eric Marzec came on and pitched the 8th. It was his 4th appearance in the last 5 games. He worked a 1-2-3 8th, lowering his ERA to 2.06. The pitching, again, put the Stars in a position to win a game. Unfortunately, the hitting did not come through.

Huntsville Box Score

For the 11th straight game, the Stars were held to 2 runs or less. Tonight, the offense was supplied by first baseman Jason Rogers. Rogers hit is league leading 22nd home run, driving in his league leading 85th run. The only other player to record a hit was second baseman Nick Shaw. He reached base 3 times, going 2-3 with a walk. Third baseman Mike Walker drew a walk, as did Chadwin Stang in a pinch hit role. Chadwin also stole his 5th base on the season. As a team, the Stars struck out 12 times for the 2nd straight game.

Huntsville Play By Play

Jason Rogers as the one man rally in the 7th.

Huntsville Top of the 7th

Jason Rogers homers (22) on a line drive to left field.

Mike Walker grounds out, pitcher Gus Schlosser to first baseman Christian Marrero.

Brock Kjeldgaard flies out to center fielder Mycal Jones.

Shawn Zarraga grounds out, second baseman Barrett Kleinknecht to first baseman Christian Marrero.

Huntsvile (27-37 second half, 56-76 overall) will play their final road game on the season Tuesday night as they take on the Mississippi Braves. Righty Brooks Hall (2-4, 4.10) will look to extend his late season run as he takes the mound for the Stars. Game time is set for 7:00 Central. You can tune in starting at 6:45 to hear the Voice Of The Stars Alex Cohen and the pregame show. This game is the last game for the Stars that will be available on MiLB TV. If you have a subscription, you can check them out. Remember, turn down the TV sound and turn up the Stars Radio Network!

Wisconsin wins 4-2 to keeps charging in playoff chase

Wagner tosses seven strong innings as Rattlers pick up ground

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers fell behind the Kane County Cougars early in Monday's game at Time Warner Cable Field. Then, Rattlers offense scratched out enough runs while Tyler Wagner and Harvey Martin shut the Cougars down the rest of the way. Wisconsin defeated Kane County 4-2 and picked up another game in a late season move at a playoff spot.

The Cougars (52-76 overall, 22-40 second half) took the early lead with two runs in the top of the second inning. Oliver Zapata chopped a single into right with runners on the corners to drive in the first run. Reggie Golden grounded into a force out at second to drive in the second run. Kane County would load the bases, but Wagner got out of the inning to keep the Cougars at a 2-0 lead.

That lead didn't last long. Wisconsin (58-70, 29-34) stormed back with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second. Victor Roache started the inning with single. Parker Berberet worked the count to 3-2 and - with Roache on the move - doubled to left-center. Roache easily scored on the play. Max Walla was next and he lined a double down the line in right to drive in Berberet with the tying run.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth. Orlando Arcia started the inning with a single. He went to second on a wild pitch and took third on a grounder off the bat of Dustin Houle. Adrian Williams was at the plate with a 1-1 count. Kane County starter James Pugliese went to deliver the ball to the plate, but stopped when the catcher jumped out for a pitchout. That resulted in a balk and allowed Arcia to score the go ahead run.

Wagner settled in after the second inning. He tossed a total of seven innings, ended his performance with seven strikeouts, and was in position for his tenth win of the season.

Martin took over for Wagner and tossed a 1-2-3 eighth.

The Rattlers tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning against Cougars reliever Brian Smith. Williams and Alfred Rodriguez had consecutive singles to start the frame. Williams moved to third on a bunt by Michael Reed that resulted in a force out on Rodriguez at second base. Tyrone Taylor stood at the plate and Smith uncorked a wild pitch to let Williams score to put the Rattlers up 4-2.

Martin worked around a one out single in the top of the ninth inning to close out the Cougars for his third save. The victory was the fourth in the last five games for the Timber Rattlers.

Wisconsin picked up ground on Clinton in the Wild Card race. The LumberKings lost 6-5 at Beloit to see their second half record fall to 31-32. It was their fifth straight loss. Wisconsin now trails Clinton by two games. There are seven games remaining in the regular season. Wisconsin must finish at least one game ahead of the LumberKings to claim the Wild Card spot because Clinton won the season series from the Timber Rattlers and holds the tie-breaker.

The final game of the series with the Cougars is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Jorge Lopez (7-8, 5.30) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has Nathan Dorris (6-3, 2.80) set to start for them. Game time is 12:05pm.

Kids play free in the Kids' Zone and there is a free JanSport Backpack Raffle as part of Kids Rock the Ballpark on Tuesday. Plus, donate school supplies at the gate and receive a voucher that allows you to receive a reserved seat ticket for free when you buy a reserved seat ticket to this game.

Also, show your business card at the box office on Tuesday and you will receive a box seat ticket, your choice of beverage, and your choice of brat or hotdog for $11.50 from Baker Tilly, WNAM, and WVBO. This offer is also available to fans 55 & older.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 11:45am. Tuesday's game is also available on MiLB.TV.

WP: Tyler Wagner (10-8)

LP: James Pugliese (0-1)

SAVE: Harvey Martin (3)

TIME: 2:34

ATTN: 3,361

Wisconsin Boxscore

Tyler Wagner had a very good slider tonight, early in the game his control varied widely from to batter to batter but he got sharper as the game went on. The 2 runs he gave up were due to 3 consecutive choppers through the IF. Not necessarily bad luck, but not bad pitches either.

Harvey Martin wasn't quite as effective as his line would suggest, every ball that was put in play prior to the last out was hit fairly hard, Parker Berberet made a sensational snow cone grab to save a hit and 2 other balls were lined to RF besides the hit to LF. However it all worked out in the end and Harvey sealed the deal.

Orlando Arcia made a spectacular diving play behind 2B to get the last out of the 1st and also went 2-3. Victor Roache had the other multi-hit game (2-4).

This was my first chance to see Dustin Houle play, he didn't stand out in any particular way in tonight's game.

Sounds Double Up RedHawks In Series Opener, 6-3

Prince Homers, Velez Extends Pair Of Streaks For Nashville

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Nashville Sounds doubled up the Oklahoma City RedHawks, 6-3, on Monday evening at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in the opener of a four-game series.

With the win, the Sounds (53-84) snapped Oklahoma City's 17-game home winning streak and posted back-to-back road victories for just the fifth time all season. Nashville rapped out 15 hits but also left a season-high 16 runners on base on the night.

Josh Prince homered and drove in a pair of runs for the Sounds, while red-hot Eugenio Velez went 3-for-6 to extend a pair of streaks, moving his team-best hitting streak to 15 games and his on-base streak to 29 games. Velez is batting .333 (22-for-66) during his 15-game hit streak, the longest by a Sound all season. Nashville jumped out to a 4-0 lead by batting around in the top of the third against RedHawks starter Ross Seaton.

Prince spotted the Sounds a 1-0 lead when he led off the frame with his 11th homer of the year, a deep drive to left off Seaton.

The rally continued against Seaton as Velez followed with a double to right and Sean Halton drew a walk. Two batters later, Blake Lalli cracked an RBI single to right to up the Nashville advantage to 2-0. Catcher Anderson De La Rosa (4-for-5) dumped a single to shallow left to bring home Halton for a three-run cushion and Stephen Parker plated Lalli with a groundout to make it a 4-0 contest.

Oklahoma City got onto the board in the home half of the fourth. Jimmy Paredes drew a one-out walk and later scored on Jonathan Singleton's one-out single to center off Jimmy Nelson. The Nashville right-hander limited the damage in the frame after facing a one-out, bases-loaded jam.

Nelson (4-6) snapped a two-start losing streak by earning the win for Nashville by limiting the RedHawks to one run on five hits while fanning seven batters over five frames of action, a 101-pitch effort.

Seaton (3-7) took the loss after being tagged for four runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings of work.

The Sounds had runners in scoring position with less than two outs in the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings, but they were unable to add to their lead until the ninth.

Brent Leach worked a pair of scoreless relief frames for Nashville, recording strikeouts for five of his six outs recorded, before Kyle Heckathorn escaped a jam in the eighth. With runners on second and third and two down, he retired Trevor Crowe, the potential tying run, on a hard-hit liner to center to quell the threat.

In the top of the ninth, Nashville tacked on two insurance runs against Hector Ambriz to extend the lead to 6-1. Lalli and De La Rosa opened the frame with consecutive singles and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Parker grounded an RBI single through the right side of the infield to bring in Lalli for a 5-1 lead. Following a Hainley Statia strikeout, Kentrail Davis drew a walk to load the bags for Prince, who brought in De La Rosa with a single to left on a 1-2 offering. The Sounds were unable to do any further damage, however, stranding the bases full for the third time as the final two batters of the frame were retired.

In the bottom of the ninth, Heckathorn remained on the hill for Nashville and ran into trouble again. The RedHawks loaded the bases with no outs before the right-hander fanned Paredes and popped up Japhet Amador for the first two outs. Singleton followed with a two-run single to center that drew Oklahoma City to within 6-3.

Travis Webb was summoned from the Sounds' bullpen and the southpaw retired Marc Krauss, the potential tying run, on a first-pitch flyout to earn his first save of the year and the second save of his eight-year pro career.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. meeting on Tuesday. Left-hander Zach Kroenke (5-15, 4.67) will toe the slab for the Sounds and face a yet-to-be-determined Oklahoma City hurler.

Final (game two): Helena 16, @Grand Junction 3 (7 innings)

Helena box score

The Brewers took a 5-2 lead into the 6th...and then tacked on a few Badger Mutual insurance runs--11 to be precise. Somewhat improbably they tallied one nine hits, though as you might expect they did draw a bunch of free passes (11).

Of the nine hits, four came courtesy of Renaldo Jenkins and included a double and a triple. In the previous post I highlighted Jalen Harris's surprisingly good numbers, and now it's Jenkins' turn. This monster game raises the 20-year-old middle infielder's season batting line to .318/.369/.442. The wart here is that he's drawn only five walks, but hey, otherwise you might have heard of him.

Omar Garcia, Michael Ratterree, and Michael Turay each reached base three times, all with one hit and two walks. Since we're posting batting lines, Garcia's at .306/.427/.328 (only four doubles!), and Ratterree is at .321/.401/.615 (he's 22, but hitting well can't hurt, right?)

Danny Keller remains extremely wild, walking four, hitting a batter, and unleashing two wild pitches in his four innings of work. Tyler Alexander posted a rare four-strikeout inning to close out the game; in fact, he also had two wild pitches, and the other Brewers pitcher, Tristan Archer had one as well.
