Fernandez is fantastic in Rattlers victory

Wisconsin beats Kane County 3-1

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Rodolfo Fernandez stepped up on Sunday for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The right-hander out of Cuba made his first professional start and tossed a gem against the Kane County Cougars in Wisconsin's 3-1 victory. The win at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium allowed the Rattlers to pick up ground in the Western Division playoff chase.

Alfredo Rodriguez put the Timber Rattlers (57-70 overall, 28-34 second half) in front with a run in the bottom of the third inning. His two-out single up the middle drove Orlando Arcia home from third base. Wisconsin added to their lead in the fourth inning. They had Tyrone Taylor at third and Victor Roache at first base with one out. Parker Berberet grounded into a force play at second to get Taylor home for a 2-0 lead.

Fernandez carried a seventeen inning scoreless streak heading into Sunday's game. The native of Cuba kept Kane County off balance and off the scoreboard through the first five innings. The Cougars (52-75, 22-39) got to Fernandez in the sixth.

Wilson Contreras stood at the plate with Gioskar Amaya at second and two outs. Contreras doubled just inside the bag at third base to drive in Amaya. An error on the play let Contreras take third base. That RBI hit ended the scoreless streak of Fernandez at 22-2/3 innings.

Arcia made a stellar defensive play at short to end the bottom of the sixth inning and keep the Rattlers up 2-1. Marco Hernandez followed the Contreras play with a hot shot up the middle. Arcia made a diving stop of the ball, got to his feet, and fired a strike to first base to get Hernandez.

Fernandez tossed six innings, allowed one run on four hits, walked none, and struck out five as he put Wisconsin in position to win the game.

The Rattlers added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Victor Roache singled to start the inning and Berberet was hit by a pitch with one out. Kane County brought left-handed reliever Al Yevoli on in relief of starter Starling Peralta to face Max Walla. The left-handed hitting Walla pulled a double inside the first base bag to drive in Roache and the Rattlers lead was back to two runs.

Mike Strong took over for Fernandez in the top of the seventh. He allowed a leadoff double only to strand that runner at third base. In the eighth, Strong worked around a leadoff single and a two-out double to keep the Cougars off the scoreboard. He tossed a perfect ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts to close out the Cougars. Strong allowed three hits, struck out five, and earned his first save of the season.

The Clinton LumberKings entered Sunday's action at 31-30 in the second half and holding a four game lead over the Timber Rattlers for the Wild Card. But, Clinton lost 6-4 at Beloit to drop to .500 on the half..

Additionally, Peoria lost 9-1 at Cedar Rapids. Wisconsin has moved even with Peoria in the second half standings. Both teams are 28-34 and trail Clinton by three games for the Wild Card with eight games remaining in the regular season.

The series continues on Monday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Tyler Wagner (9-8, 3.29) is scheduled as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. James Pugliese (0-0, 7.20) is the scheduled starter for the Cougars. Game time is 7:05pm.

Audio from Albuquerque — Donovan Hand Interviews Jeff Hem

"The Sounds have a seven-game losing streak as they enter Sunday night’s contest in Albuquerque. So, in an effort to break from the norm and snap the skid, reliever Donovan Hand interviewed me today for the pregame show. When Hand was in the big leagues recently he interviewed Brewers radio announcer Joe Block, and yesterday Hand asked if he could do the same with me. Anything to try to snap the skid!"

Final: Mississippi 6 Huntsville 2

Mississippi took advantage of starter Taylor Jungmann's control problems to build a lead and cruised to a 6-2 victory Sunday afternoon. Jungmann (9-10, 4.38) only lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing 5 earned runs on 3 hits and 7 walks while striking out 1. The 7 walks were a season high. Jungmann now has 72 walks to 79 strikeouts on the season. Taylor saw his ERA jump to 4.38. Jungmann threw 80 pitches, 43 for strikes. He did post a 7-2 GO/FO ratio.

With Jungmann having a short start, the bullpen was needed to cover 4 2/3 innings. Frankie De La Cruz was first out of the pen. He worked 1 2/3 innings, allowing an earned run on 3 hits. Next was Micah Owings. He worked a 1-2-3 inning striking out 1. Owings has now worked 5 scoreless innings, striking out 9. The hitting side, not so good (1-27). Michael Olmsted also threw a 1-2-3 inning striking out 1. The Brewers plan to send Olmsted down to have some success to build on going into the off season seems to be working so far. Finally Eric Marzec pitched a perfect 8th inning, striking out 1.

AUDIO: Game Highlights

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees and the Dunedin Blue Jays traded four-run innings, but it was the Blue Jays who came out on top with the 6-5 win to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Manatees on Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium.

Brevard's (27-32 second half, 64-62 overall) loss, combine with a Daytona win earlier in the day, eliminated the 'Tees from playoff contention. The Manatees now sit 9.5 games out of first place with eight games remaining on the schedule.

Brevard got on the board in the opening frame, with Yadiel Rivera singling and scoring on a Cameron Garfield base hit.

Dunedin (23-34, 60-63) took advantage of a walk, an obstruction call and a two-out single by Jon Berti to tie the game in the third inning.

Brevard County quickly retook the lead as they batted around in a four-run third. A pair of walks opened up the frame and then a series of singles drove in all four runs. Mitch Haniger drove in two men, then Greg Hopkins, Ben McMahan and Brandon Macias each picked up RBI base hits.

The final RBI single of the third came against reliever Wil Browning, after John Anderson gave up five runs on six hits with three walks in 2.1 innings. He struck out just one man.

Browning would end up earning the win, representing the first in a series of strong relief appearances for the Jays. Once Browning entered, Macias' single was joined by a pair of Cameron Garfield singles as the only base runners allowed in 6.2 innings of work from the D-Jays bullpen.

The Blue Jays scored another run in the fourth with three straight hits to open the inning, including an RBI double off the bat of Marcus Knecht which cut Brevard's lead to 5-2.

Four runs in the top of the fifth, including a two-run homer from Michael Crouse, gave the Blue Jays their 6-5 lead at the halfway point.

Brent Suter (7-9, 3.40 ERA) was lifted after the home run as he went 4.1 innings. He gave up all six of Dunedin's runs, with five of them being charged as earned. Suter surrendered ten hits and four walks, while recording just one strikeout.

Stephen Peterson and Eric Arnett combine to allow just two hits in 4.2 innings with five strikeouts in relief of Suter.

Brevard County's homestand will continue on Monday evening at 5:05 p.m. with a doubleheader against the Lakeland Flying Tigers to open a four-game series.

Chad Pierce (5-6, 3.71 ERA) is slated to take the mound for game one for the Manatees against Lakeland's Wilsen Palacios (6-8, 3.46 ERA).

In game two, Brevard's Taylor Mangum (1-1, 4.80 ERA) is scheduled to make his first professional start, with the Flying Tigers sending Patrick Cooper (2-1, 2.95 ERA) to the hill.

Nashville's Stephen Parker Goes 3-For-5, A Single Shy Of Cycle

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Nashville Sounds avoided a five-game series sweep and snapped a seven-game losing streak by defeating the Albuquerque Isotopes, 10-5, in the series finale Sunday night at Isotopes Park, highlighted by a 3-for-5 effort by third baseman Stephen Parker.

With the rain coming down in the sixth inning of a tie game, Parker delivered the go-ahead run for Nashville via the long ball. The solo shot to dead center field marked Parker's eighth home run of the season and put the Sounds ahead 5-4.

In the following inning with the bases-loaded, Parker lifted a pitch from reliever Blake Johnson (6-6) to left-center field for a bases-clearing three-run triple to put the game out of reach for the home team. Parker finished with four RBIs, two runs, and a single shy of the cycle.

Johnson was charged the loss, allowing Nashville five runs on five hits over two innings of work.

The Sounds initially trailed 1-0, but broke away with four runs in the in the fifth inning. Parker doubled to start the frame, and Sounds starting pitcher Johnny Hellweg helped his own cause with an RBI-single up the middle.

Nashville continued to work the bases loaded and with two outs before Sean Halton drew a walk from 'Topes tosser Matt Palmer to give Nashville the 2-1 advantage. First baseman Hunter Morris doubled the Sounds score with a single to right-center field.

The 'Topes got on the board in the first inning with an RBI-double from former Sound Tony Gwynn Jr., scoring Dee Gordon. Hellweg ended his 33-pitch first inning by getting Brian Barden to strike out with the bases loaded.

Hellweg was faced with a similar two-out bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the fifth inning, but this time Barden connected for a bases-clearing triple to knot the game at four runs apiece, which ended Hellweg's night at 111 pitches, the most by a Sounds starter this season.

Hellweg racked up seven strikeouts to six walks, both matching season highs, before Donovan Hand (3-1) took over to close out the fifth inning for Nashville. Hand stayed in the game to deliver a total of 2 1/3 scoreless innings for his third win. He struck out three and walked one.

Dustin Molleken also saw work from the Sounds bullpen, loading the bases in the eighth before recording his first outs on a double-play in which the 'Topes picked up a run. He finished the game for Nashville.

Sounds infielder Eugenio Velez, 2-for-3, connected for a single in the first to extend his season-best hit streak to 14 games, which matches Parker's team season-high that he record from April 28 to May 11.

Nashville scored their 10th run when Sean Halton grounded into a double play in the eighth inning; Kentrail Davis, 2-for-4, scored from third.

The Sounds begin their final road series of the season Monday night against the Oklahoma City RedHawks at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Throwing for Nashville will be RHP Jimmy Nelson (3-6, 4.09) opposite Oklahoma City's RHP Ross Seaton (3-6, 8.15). Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Friday, August 30, for the team's final homestand of the season.

AZL Brewers Box Score

Five different Brewers reached base twice, the team hit .300 with RISP, seems like more than three runs should have scored.

20-year-old Venezuelan RHP Jorge Ortega managed a "quality" six innings despite four walks. RHP Milton Gomez followed with an unfortunate 7th inning.

Stars Silenced By M-Braves, Northcraft

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

In game three of a five-game series at Trustmark Park, the Huntsville Stars lost to the Mississippi Braves by a score of 6-2 on Sunday evening.

After getting shutout one night earlier, the M-Braves broke out to a hot start against Stars starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann.

To begin the game, the M-Braves worked three walks from Jungmann into an RBI single from first baseman Omar Luna and an RBI groundout by outfielder Jose Martinez to make the score 2-0. Mississippi then got a two-run, two-out double from second baseman Tommy LaStella in the second inning to go up by four.

That offense was plenty for M-Braves starting pitcher Aaron Northcraft. The 23-year-old tossed five scoreless frames against the Stars to improve to 8-8 on the year. Northcraft is now 3-0 in three starts against Huntsville this year.

The win for the ninth-ranked prospect in the Braves organization was preserved by a combined three scoreless innings of relief from righties Shea Simmons and James Hoyt.

For the Stars, their only offense in the eighth inning against former Huntsville reliever Thomas Keeling.

Following a walk by third baseman Mike Walker, outfielder Brock Kjeldgaard launched a two-run blast off the batters eye in centerfield to make the score 6-2. For Kjeldgaard, the homer was his 21st on the season, tying him for the league lead with two others, including fellow Stars teammate Jason Rogers. It was also his 7th homer on the year against Mississippi alone.

From a pitching perspective, Jungmann fell to 9-10 on the season after giving up five runs in 3.1 innings while walking a season-high seven batters. Jungmann has now lost three straight starts.

Aside from the Brewers second-ranked prospect, Huntsville got an inning of scoreless relief from righties Micah Owings, Michael Olmsted and Eric Marzec.

Mississippi's offense tacked on their other two runs on an RBI groundout by third baseman Edward Salcedo in the fourth inning and an RBI single from Northcraft one inning later.

On Monday, the Stars will play game four of a five-game set against the Braves at Trustmark Park. Huntsville will send RHP Ariel Pena (7-8, 3.88 ERA) while Mississippi will counter with RHP Gus Schlosser (6-5, 2.50 ERA).

Coming into the game, Pena has given up just two earned runs in his last three starts (15 innings pitched).

First pitch is at 7:00 PM.
