Rule 5 Protection & The 40-Man Roster; Latest -- Rule 5 Draft results

He's actually quite fast, he just has poor baserunning instincts. And while he's not going to be a 30 HR guy, he does have modest power.

Maybe a young Carlos Gomez comparison here (save for the age diff). High skill set but struggles to use it most efficiently.

I think with the 40 man getting tight they need to make a decision on Gamel and Francisco so that they both don't go to arbitration, it really isn't necessary to keep both. I am also in favor now of getting rid of Badenhop to clear a spot since they have plenty of relievers at the minimum that can also be optioned back and forth between the minors and majors. If they really see something in Richardson then they should feel free to let Prince go off the 40 man and let somebody pick him in the rule v if they want.

Beg my pardon, if things get tight, why would Kentrail Davis need to be protected? I don't follow the minors that much, but his stats don't scream that he is someone that needs to be kept (under .800 OPS last three years) as it would seem to me he is blocked from a MLB OF roster spot by better players in Davis and Gindl.

I do think that with the flexibility in the pen they probably will just let Badenhop walk and save $1.5M. If Figaro is going to cost anything they could remove him from the 40 man also. They should trade Aoki. Cut Yuni. Remove Olmsted. Plus there are a few names I don't know what their deal is - Manzanillo, Bucci, De La Torre that may be removed.

the claim of josh ravin makes it harder for a fringe player to be added to the 40-man . . .

Remove Olmsted.

Two points:

- Wouldn't Ravin be a fringe player?

- I would guess that he is going to be this year's Olmsted, including taking his 40-man spot. Because this year's Olmsted didn't look worth keeping around and will probably be released.

I can't see the problem here... Giving him a 40-man spot now doesn't mean he will have it in 7 days, let alone the entire offseason. Bring him in, try him out, see if he is worth keeping. If spots do get tight, he can be released. This isn't until death do we part...

In case you were wondering, the four players on the 60-day DL who technically don't count against the 40-man roster right now (Gamel, Green, Hart, Weeks) don't need to be activated until five days after the World Series, so there won't need to be a cleanup of fringe 40-man roster members until that time (hello, Santo Manzanillo).

Not sure, but imagine Ryan Braun and Miguel De Los Santos (both on the restricted list) would become active that same day.

Brewers suddenly have a little breathing room with Gamel, Green, Bucci and Prince off the 40 man. More likely to come soon with Yuni, Hart, Gonzalez and other fringe guys. I agree with others now who said Richardson will be on the 40 man.

We've added Nick Bucci and Josh Prince to the Rule 5 eligible list that kicks off this thread.

Shouldn't be anything to be concerned about -- if teams didn't want to claim them this week with no Rule 5 strings attached, they're not going to pluck them at the winter meetings.

Morris, Hall, Shackelford and Rogers added.

I really don't get why Rogers was added.

I really don't understand why Hall was added. Is he going to be a starter at the Major level this year or next? or are they making him a reliever? Probably just Brewers Management protecting the bonus money they gave Hall. Best hope for Cravy at this point...Rule 5 draft.

Interesting to note that in the article they said that Rogers was working at 3B at the Brewers Dominican Baseball academy and dabbled at the position during the AFL. It sounds like he is athletic for a big guy. If he can be at least serviceable at 3B that would be a very good reason to protect him. I'm more surprised by Hall's addition.

Hopefully Shackleford can turn into more of Jason Motte than Tim Dillard.

Rogers played a lot of outfield in the AFL and always seemed to get great jumps on ball hit to him. He always hit the cutoff on extra base hits which I thought was smart. For a guy that didn't play a lot of outfield...he looked pretty good out there.

Not sure if this is the right place to post about potential targets for the Brewers but Baseball America noted that Omar Luis, a guy the Yankees initially signed to a $4 million bonus in 2012, is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/surprise-player-available-in-rule-5-draft/

With the talk of the Brewers not having many high ceiling players would it be a decent move by the Brewers to stash this guy away in the bullpen for a year and then option him from 2015-2017 and hope he develops into a quality starting pitcher? Looks like he had major control issues last year but I guess I'm trying not to look too much into the stats and more at the talent potential.

***

Keep in mind that there is also a minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. The Brewers can protect up to 35 players from being selected in this phase (there are 40 on this list). That doesn't mean the Brewers are protecting the maximum 35 of the above. As seen last year in the case of Eric Farris, the Brewers can expose a player to the minor league phase if they feel they have a surplus in a particular area, as a courtesy to the player(s) for a chance at a new beginning elsewhere.

In the minor league "filler" phase of Rule 5, 28-year-old CF Kevin Mattison from the Marlins.

Looks like a high-character pick:

Awards/Honors:

12/22/2011 MiLB.com Organization All-Star

11/19/2011 AFL Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award

11/19/2011 AFL All-Prospect Team

08/31/2011 SOU Best Hustler

06/20/2011 SOU Mid-Season All-Star

Nice article on the Stenson Award win by Mattison here.

I posted this on the major league forum but this seems like a waste. A player cannot possibly pull off a move from rookie ball to Milwaukee. I am sure he probably is a LOOGY but this really seems like a shot in the dark and a waste of a roster spot.

They must have seen something that they really liked. I'm ok w/ it, a lefty that throws 90-94 w/ a good curveball. Maybe he surprises us and sticks around?
