Rattlers win and cut into Clinton's Wild Card lead

Wisconsin wins 1-0 Friday night

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers needed a win at Clinton on Friday night. They got it. Alfredo Rodriguez drove in the only run of the game and three Wisconsin pitchers combined on the four-hit, 1-0 shutout at Ashford University Field. Austin Ross, Allan Williams, and Taylor Wall kept the LumberKings off the scoreboard and helped Wisconsin move a little closer in the playoff chase.

Parker Berberet started the Wisconsin fifth inning with a double off the wall in left-center. Clinton starter Victor Sanchez got the next two outs, but threw a wild pitch with Adrian Williams at the plate to allow Berberet to take third. Williams would draw a walk to get the inning to Alfredo Rodriguez. The Rattlers leadoff batter smacked a double down the line in right to score Berberet and the Rattlers (56-69 overall, 27-33 second half) were up 1-0.

Ross faced difficult situations in the first and third innings, but escaped each time. In the bottom of the first, a walk and a hit batsman put runners at first and second with one outs. Ross got out of the jam by getting Gaby Guerrero to ground into a 6-4-3 double play. In bottom of the third inning, the LumberKings (64-65, 31-29) got the leadoff batter on base due to an error. A two out walk put two runners on base for Guerrero again. Then, Ross struck out Guerrero to end the threat.

Ross allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out five in his five innings.

Alan Williams took over for Ross in the sixth inning. The lefty, who was making his 2013 debut with the Timber Rattlers, allowed a leadoff single in the seventh and a two out double in the eighth inning. But Williams held the lead.

Taylor Wall took over for the bottom of the ninth inning. Wall tossed a 1-2-3 inning, including two strikeouts. He struck out pinch-hitter Tyler Marlette to close out the game and earn his seventh save of the season.

The victory moved the Timber Rattler to within four games of Clinton for the Western Division Wild Card with ten games left to play in the regular season.

Clinton's remaining schedule includes a seven game road trip that starts on Friday with four games at Beloit followed by three games at Peoria. Clinton ends their season with three games at home against Cedar Rapids over Labor Day weekend.

The Timber Rattlers begin a seven game homestand with a game against the Kane County Cougars at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Saturday night. Preston Gainey (4-7, 5.40) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County sends Tayler Scott (5-8, 4.21) to the mound. Game time is 6:35pm. The Timber Rattlers end their season with three games at Burlington over Labor Day Weekend.

Saturday is Milwaukee Bucks Night at the ballpark. Bango, the Milwaukee Bucks Dancers, Seniorgee!, and the Rim Rockers are all scheduled to be on hand to meet fans to get ready for the NBA season. Fly Away Saturday means one lucky fan will win airfare for two from Funjet Vacations and Fox World Travel at this game. FOX 11 presents a postgame fireworks display.

My NEW 32's Sports Showdown will have the television broadcast starting at 6:00pm. You may catch the radio call on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting at 6:15pm. Saturday's game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

The Rattlers managed just 3 hits but it was enough as Alfredo Rodriguez and Parker Berberet both doubled in the 5th for the T-Rats lone run as Mehring covered above.

VIERA, Fla. - Despite going down 1-0 in the first inning, the Brevard County Manatees were able to come back and take a 3-1 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays to open an eight-game home stand on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Dunedin's first inning run was unearned as Jon Berti took a four-pitch walk to open up the contest. After he stole his league-leading 53rd base of the year, he forced a throwing error in the attempt to knock him down and took an extra bag. From third, he scored on Michael Crouse's sacrifice fly.

Brevard County (26-31 second half, 63-61 overall) bounced back in the second, taking advantage of a pair of defensive errors.

Cameron Garfield led off with an infield single and advanced to second when Cody Hawn grounded a ball to the first baseman. Trying to get the lead runner, shortstop Shane Opitz was unable to corral the throw to second, making both runners safe.

Greg Hopkins then dropped down a bunt single, which resulted in a throwing error by catcher Derrick Chung. Thanks to the miscue, Garfield was able to score from second, Hawn advanced to third and Hopkins scampered an extra 90 feet to second.

T.J. Mittelstaedt drove a two-run double to right-center, giving the Manatees a 3-1 lead that would last to the end of the ballgame thanks to stellar pitching from the 'Tees bullpen.

After Damien Magnifico's two innings, over which he allowed just the unearned run on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts, Jacob Barnes came on for six shutout innings.

Barnes (9-5, 3.02 ERA) was credited with the win, giving up just three hits and a base on balls while recording six strikeouts before Tommy Toledo came on for the ninth, to earn his 18th save of the season.

Starting for Dunedin (22-33, 59-62) was Scott Copeland, who was charged with two earned runs out of the three total that he allowed. In his four innings, Copeland surrendered five hits, issued two walks and struck out five batters.

Wil Browning, Tony Davis, Jesse Hernandez and Ajay Meyer out of the Blue Jays' bullpen held Brevard County scoreless the rest of the way.

Game two of the series takes place on Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. It will be a battle of starters on Major League rehab assignments, with Mark Rogers (0-1, 6.75) slated to take the hill for the Manatees against lefty Luis Perez (0-0, 3.00) for the Blue Jays.

Stars Shutout in Series Opener With M-Braves

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

To open up a five-game set at Trustmark Park and their final road trip of 2013, the Huntsville Stars beat the Mississippi Braves by a score of 2-1 on Friday night.

For the M-Braves, they got things started off in the first inning against Stars starting pitcher Drew Gagnon. Following a two-out double by second baseman Tommy LaStella and a walk drawn by third basemen Edward Salcedo, both runners would a score on a two-run double from outfielder Jose Martinez to make the score 2-0.

Those early runs were plenty for the Mississippi pitching staff. Starting pitcher Michael Lee turned in an impressive scoreless seven innings while giving eight hits to improve to 9-8 on the season. The victory for Lee and the shutout for the M-Braves were both insured by an inning of relief from righty Juan Jaime and a scoreless ninth from righty Ryne Harper.

The shutout marks the third time in the last eleven games that the Stars have been blanked by an opponent. Huntsville has now scored just 17 runs in their last 12 games and has been held to two runs or less in a game for the last seven straight contests.

Despite the shutout, the Stars outhit the M-Braves by a 9-7 margin. Huntsville was led by outfielder Eric Patterson with two hits, his second straight multi-hit game. The Stars left 11 runners on base and were 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Mississippi tacked on their two other insurance runs in the sixth inning with a RBI double from outfielder Robby Hefflinger and a RBI single by shortstop Jamie Pedroza.

All four runs of the ballgame were tabbed to Gagnon, who fell to 4-8 on the year with the loss after tossing 5.2 innings while giving up seven hits and striking out four batters.

Aside from Gagnon, righties Eric Marzec, Michael Olmsted and Frankie De La Cruz combined to toss 2.1 innings of scoreless and hitless baseball.

On Saturday, the Stars will play game two of a five-game set against the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park. Huntsville will send RHP Andy Moye (5-14, 4.17 ERA) to the hill to try to get back on the winning track while Mississippi will counter with LHP Ian Thomas (7-7, 2.80 ERA).

First pitch is at 6:00 PM.

Final: Helena 11, @Orem 2

Helena box score

Boom! The Brewers put 22 men on base today, and that's not counting the three Owlz errors. Omar Garcia set the table quite effectively, reaching base in five of six plate appearances. Garcia also stole his 25th base, though he was also picked off. Several other Brewers were on three times, including Michael Ratterree and Taylor Brennan, each of whom hit their 11th homer. Angel Ortega also went deep.

Barrett Astin and Taylor Williams each pitched okay in short appearances. Astin continues to burn worms, posting a 6/0 GO/FO tonight; for once, though, he didn't allow a homer to go with all the groundouts.

AZL Brewers Box Score

Nice bench-clearing effort in which the A-Crew jumped out to early lead and all hands jumped in the fun. An 8-2 lead became an 11-2 lead in the 7th.

Eight singles, four doubles, and four triples! Nine-for-22 with RISP! Jose Sermo, the DH in this one, had one of the doubles and singles. CF Johnny Davis singled twice and doubled. 17-year-old 6'4" 245 lb. David Denson walked and had one of the triples, that must have been fun to see.

Let's not overlook clean defense in this game from the Crew, thanks.

RHP's Martin Viramontes, Alex Lavandero, Josh Uhen, and Dylan Brock combined to only allow one earned run, with Uhen (three innings) and Brock (final two frames) with especially clean lines. The fireballing Viramontes is technically assigned formally to Maryvale, but the former Timber Rattler should begin 2014 at Brevard County as a guy to watch.

Audio from Albuquerque — Shortstop Blake Davis

Tonight’s interview is with Sounds shortstop Blake Davis, who discusses his game last night coming back from a hamstring injury; his first professional season away from the Orioles organization, which drafted him in the 4th round in ’06 and for which he made his major league debut in ’11 under former Sound Buck Showalter; what he thinks of the travel and ballparks in the Pacific Coast League compared to the International League (which holds Baltimore’s Triple-A Norfolk club); and his two different colored eyes, a condition called heterochromia iridum.

Sounds Five-Run Rally Not Enough

Nashville's Robinzon Diaz and Kentrail Davis Homer In 9-7 Loss

Nashville Sounds

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Despite stringing together a five-run seventh-inning rally to go ahead of the Albuquerque Isotopes Friday night at Isotopes Park, the Nashville Sounds were unable to hold off the 'Topes final charge, losing 9-7 for the team's sixth consecutive loss.

Sounds reliever Brent Leach (0-2) entered the game in the eighth inning with Nashville leading 6-5. The left-handed pitcher allowed a single to his first batter before recording two outs. A single from former Sound Tony Gwynn Jr. put runners on the corners for the 'Topes and ended Leach's night.

Dustin Molleken stepped to the hill for Nashville to record the final out of the inning, but not before Chili Buss hit the two-run game-winning double off of a sliding Sean Halton in right field. Alex Castellanos added a pair of insurance runs in the frame with a single to shallow left field.

The Sounds put together a similar rally just one inning before, trailing 4-1 in the seventh. Nashville started out with two hits and a walk to set the table for pinch hitter Hunter Morris, who lined a double to the right-field corner to make it a 4-3 ballgame (audio).

Kentrail Davis followed Morris with a three-run homer to dead center field to give Nashville its first lead of the night (audio). Davis recorded his first Triple-A home run on Thursday night and his effort over the two days marks the 12th time a Sound has homers on back-to-back nights this season.

Albuquerque picked up two runs in the first inning off of Sounds starter Alfredo Figaro. With the bases loaded, Buss hit a sacrifice fly to the wall in deep center field, where Kentrail Davis made the out while falling backwards up the hill. Two runners scored on the play, before Davis threw out Scott Van Slyke at third base for the double play.

Figaro pitched four innings in his second start for Nashville, allowing Albuquerque four runs, two earned, on five hits. He walked three and fanned two before R.J. Seidel took over in the fifth inning to log two scoreless frames for Nashville.

With two outs in the home half of the fourth inning, Figaro committed an error attempting to throw out the speedy Dee Gordon at first base. The ball sailed over Blake Lalli to put two runners in scoring position. On the next play, catcher Robinzon Diaz threw attempted a put out at first, but through the ball past Lalli into foul territory, which scored both runners.

Diaz put the Sounds on the board in the fourth inning with a towering home run to center field. The solo shot was Diaz's fourth of the season (audio). Nashville plated their final run in the ninth via Eugenio Velez's triple to center field (audio). The knock extends Velez's season-best hit streak to 12 games.

The Isotopes picked up a run in the seventh inning to pull within one run of Nashville when Van Slyke singled home Gwynn Jr., who tripled to lead off the inning. A single through the infield followed to put runners on the corners with no outs, but Sounds reliever Kyle Heckathorn escaped the inning without allowing the tying run to score.

Leach was charged with the loss, his second, while Albuquerque's Sean White (4-6) picked up the win with two innings of relief work.

The Sounds play game four on Saturday night at Isotopes Park and send LHP Aaron Laffey (6-7, 6.36) to the hill opposite Albuquerque's RHP Stephen Fife (1-4, 6.11). Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Friday, August 30, for the team's final homestand of the season.

Brewer Fanatic Staff

Been meaning to see if I can properly state this for a while --

Watching Khris Davis and Scooter Gennett lead the Brewers to an exciting win last night (at least as exciting as a 56-72 record will allow, darn you May 2013), makes all of us here realize just how much more enjoyment and appreciation we get at the big league level when we have an understanding of what happened with each player at the minor league level along the way.

Click on those two links above, your memory will get jogged and I'm not saying that you should have those stat lines embedded in your brain, but if you're a regular Link Report visitor, you'll definitely have the background and say "oh yeah, I enjoyed watching that Khris Davis trajectory (how about that 44-game 2012 Huntsville stretch!)" or you'll remember that Scooter Gennett was a 16th round pick enticed from Florida State who jumped over rookie ball to make his pro debut in Wisconsin the following year.

I'm not disparaging the Brewer big league fans who love the major league team only. But I'd try to explain to those diehard big league fans that somehow you do feel like the proud parent (or proud big or little sibling for you younger folks) when you truly understand the career path, ups and downs, of those new big league Brewers, whether it's for an eventual cup-of-coffee, or future big league All-Star. It adds such a huge layer of enjoyment to the big league experience, and that's what our Link Report staff tries to provide here.
