Nick Shaw fouled a ball off his foot during his first at bat. He stayed in the game long enough to single, but Alex Cohen noted Shaw was limping noticeably on his way down to first. He was lifted at that point. There was no update I heard during the remainder of the broadcast.

Final: Pensacola 1 Huntsville 0 (11 innings)

Huntsville and Pensacola locked up in a real pitchers duel Wednesday afternoon. It took a blown call against the Stars and an 11th inning wild pitch to allow the only run of the game to score. The Stars recent offense woes continued and cost Ariel Pena today. Pena (7-8, 3.88) pitched one of his better games today. Very reminiscent of the way he pitched back in May. Today, Pena worked 7 very strong innings, allowing no runs, 4 hits, 2 walks, and a wild pitch while striking out 8. Pena threw 94 pitches, 54 for strikes. His GO/FO ratio was 5-1. For the season, Pena is up to 132.1 innings. He has 2 starts left, if he stays on schedule. Last season, he threw 146.2 combined between the Angels and Brewers systems. So a couple more starts like today and he will be right there again.

Even with Pena going 7 innings, the bullpen still had to cover 4 innings. Kevin Shackelford covered 3 innings. He continued his strong play since his promotion. Over those 3 innings, Shackelford allowed only 2 hits and struck out 2. Kevin also posted a 5-2 GO/FO ratio. His ERA with Huntsville now sits at 1.11 and over his last 10 outings, covering 16 innings, he's only allowed 1 earned run. For the majority of his college career, Shackelford was a catcher, so in terms of pitching, he has a "young" arm. He's been impressive.

David Goforth was brought on to pitch the 9th. A bloop, a sacrifice bunt, and a grounder to the right side put a runner on 3rd with 2 outs. A wild pitch allowed the run to score. Very disappointing way for this game to end. Goforth (4-3, 3.46) allowed the 1 run on 1 hit.

Huntsville Box Score

Over 11 innings, the Stars were held to 5 hits and 4 walks. It appeared the Stars took the lead in the bottom of the 7th. With the bases loaded and 1 out, Hector Gomez hit a fly ball. Jason Rogers at 3rd and Shawn Zarraga at 2nd both tagged up. After the catch, the throw came in to 3rd and got Zarraga out. The home plate umpire ruled that Zarraga was tagged out before Rogers crossed the plate, so the run didn't count. Stars Radio Broadcaster Alex Cohen called it immediately a blown call. He asked the official scorer between innings and the scorer also said Rogers scored before Zarraga was tagged out. He said it wasn't even close. This was the only real threat the Stars put into scoring today. And the way the pitchers were throwing today, that one run would likely have stood up.

Rogers was the only Stars hitter to record more than 1 hit, going 2-5 and in the process pushing his average up to .270. A strong finish could see Rogers get up to .275-.280. Shawn Zarraga, Nick Shaw, and Chadwin Stang had the other singles for the Stars. Brock Kjeldgaard didn't start today but came on in a double switch. He had 2 plate appearances and walked both times. Rene Tosoni and Hector Gomez each drew a walk.

Just an idea of how rough it's been for the Stars offense, they don't have an extra base hit this entire series and haven't had one since Shawn Zarraga doubled in the 2nd inning of the last game against Mobile on August 17th.

As noted in an earlier post, Nick Shaw left the game in the 1st after fouling a ball off his leg/ankle/foot. He stayed in the game long enough to single but was limping noticeably running down to first and was lifted at that point. There was no update on his condition that I heard through the end of the game.

Huntsville (25-34 second half, 54-73 overall) and Pensacola will play game 6 of this series tomorrow evening. Brooks Hall is scheduled to start for the Stars. He'll look to continue his strong pitching as of late. Game time is set for 6:43 Central. Make sure to tune in starting at 6:28 to catch the Voice of the Stars, Alex Cohen and the pregame show.

Stars Shutout, Lose in Extras to Blue Wahoos

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

After being losing the first four games of their series at Joe Davis Stadium, the Huntsville Stars fell to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in 11 innings by a score of 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

The loss spoiled a tremendous outing from Stars starting pitcher Ariel Pena. A winner of his last two starts, Pena tossed seven scoreless frames while giving up just four hits. He also struck out eight batters, his second highest total of the season. Over his last three starts, the Brewers 17th ranked prospect (per MLB.com) has given up just two earned runs in 18 innings pitched.

While the 24-year-old righty had one of his best starts of the season, Blue Wahoos starter Josh Smith went toe-to-toe with Pena. Smith tossed 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up just four hits while striking out four batters. He now leads the entire Southern League in strikeouts with 130.

Both Pena and Smith earned no decisions.

Aside from Pena, Stars reliever Kevin Shackelford also tossed three scoreless frames.

In the seventh inning, the Stars squandered their biggest scoring opportunity against Pensacola righty Jamie Walczak. With the bases-loaded and one out, shortstop Hector Gomez flew out to centerfield and Shawn Zarraga was gunned out trying to advance from second to third before the run from third could tag up and score to end the inning.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the eleventh inning, where Pensacola tacked on the only run of the game against Stars righty David Goforth (L, 4-3). After a leadoff single from Blue Wahoos outfielder Ryan LaMarre, a sac bunt and a groundout put the potential go-ahead run just 90 feet away with two outs. With outfielder Yorman Rodriguez at the plate, Goforth threw a wild pitch that allowed LaMarre to score without a throw as the game-winning run.

Pensacola ensured their fifth straight victory when closer Trevor Bell notched his third save of the series and 15th save of the season with a scoreless bottom of the eleventh inning.

For the Stars, first basemen Jason Rogers paced the offense with two of the Stars five total hits.

The defeat for the Stars marks their fifth loss in a row and seventh shutout of the season. Huntsville has also scored two runs or less in each of the last six contests.

On Thursday, the Stars will try to avoid the series sweep against the Blue Wahoos with the finale of a six-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. Huntsville will send RHP Brooks Hall (2-5, 4.53 ERA) to the hill while the Pensacola will counter with RHP Robert Stephenson (0-1, 3.00 ERA).

Stephenson is the top prospect in the Reds organization and a consensus top-20 prospect in all of minor league baseball.

First pitch is at 6:43 PM.

Clinton win chops away at Rattlers playoff chances

Wisconsin falls 4-3 at Clinton

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA - Dario Pizzano was there when the Clinton LumberKings needed the big hit. His two-out double in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in a run to break a 3-3 tie. That hit led Clinton to a 4-3 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Wednesday night at Ashford University Field. The loss was the third straight for Wisconsin and sent them sliding farther behind the LumberKings in the Wild Card race.

Taylor Ard started a two-out rally for Clinton (64-63 overall, 31-27 second half) in the bottom of the second inning with a bloop singled into shallow right-center. Gaby Guerrero was next and he took a close 3-2 pitch from Rattlers starting pitcher Tyler Wagner for a walk. Janelfry Zorilla lined a single to center and drove in Guerrero. The throw home missed the cutoff man and allowed the LumberKings to put runners on second and third. Martin Peguero followed with a two-run single to left and the LumberKings were up 3-0.

The Rattlers (54-69, 25-33) got close in the top of the fourth. Tyrone Taylor singled to start the inning. Garrett Cooper followed with a double to drive in Taylor. Victor Roache was next and his double drove in Cooper. But, Roache was left stranded at second when the inning ended.

Wisconsin would tie the game in the fifth. Alfredo Rodriguez reached on an error. Michael Reed singled. Then, a wild pitch by Clinton starter David Holman put runners on second and third. Taylor sent a fly ball to deep left-center to allow Rodriguez to tag and score on the play.

Wagner pitched six innings and didn't give up another run after the second. He walked three, struck out two, and turned a tie game over to the bullpen in the seventh.

Harvey Martin took over after the stretch and gave up a leadoff single, but a pair of force plays at second base left Clinton with a runner at first and two outs. That didn't matter to Dario Pizzano. The Clinton designated hitter lined a double to the gap in left-center to score the go-ahead run from first base.

Roache drew a leadoff walk in the top of the ninth inning. He was at second with one out. Max Walla lined a pitch to the gap in right-center, but Guerrero ran the ball down on the fly for the second out. Roache tagged and made it to third base on the play, but he was left stranded at third with the tying run as the LumberKings got the final out of the game on a grounder to short.

The loss drops Wisconsin six games behind the LumberKings in the second half Western Division Wild Card race with twelve games remaining in the regular season.

Game two of the series is Thursday night at 6:30pm. Jorge Lopez (7-8, 5.15) is scheduled as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton has Charles Kaalekahi (5-4, 4.57) as their scheduled starter. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

WP: David Holman (4-6)

LP: Harvey Martin (2-4)

SAVE: Mark Bordanaro (3)

TIME: 2:16

ATTN: 971

Wisconsin Boxscore

Tyler Wagner went 6 innings allowing 3 earned runs though he allowed 7 hits and 3 walks but only struck out 2. Harvey Martin's first season at A ball has been a bit of a struggle.

Orlando Arcia had the only multi-hit game for the T-Rats but he did get caught stealing for the 9th time. Remember Max Walla's pre-draft power display? He had 7 HRs in 409 PAs last year, this year he has 0 HRs through 247 PAs. Max has 15 HRs in 1331 professional ABs, or 1 HR every 88.73333 PAs... the Rattlers SS Arcia has 10 HRs in 696 PAs which is 1 HR every 69.6 PAs. I will always wonder what the story is/was with Max's power.

Wisconsin Recap

I hope this was a close play at home otherwise a certain scene from A League of Their Own

as the extra base cost the Rattlers a run.

Final: @Orem 4, Helena 3

Helena box score

Tough loss to snap a six-game win streak. The Brewers took a 3-1 lead into the 9th but allowed the Owlz to walk off with a win. The three runs and loss were charged to Estevenson Encarnacion. Danny Keller managed two scoreless innings, but he walked two and fanned none. Keller hasn't had more strikeouts than walks since his first appearance of the year, on June 22nd.

As a bright spot, Clint Coulter had a big game in his first Pioneer League action since early July, going 3-4. Omar Garcia and Adam Giacalone each reached twice, and Garcia stole his 24th base. Nice little debut season he's putting together for a 19-/20-year-old.

Elvis Rubio was scheduled for a day off, but entered for Williams, singled twice, drove in two, and extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Time to check out the Rubio shirseys at the Miller Park store.

Sounds Drop Series Finale To Express, 7-5

Nashville Sounds

Eugenio Velez, archive photo... from yesterday (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Nashville Sounds began their final road trip of the year on a down note, falling 5-3 to Albuquerque on Wednesday evening at Isotopes Park in the opener of a five-game series.

The defeat was the fifth in the past six games for Nashville (50-82).

The Sounds got off to a quick start, plating a run in the top of the first inning against Matt Magill. Kentrail Davis (3-for-4) led off with a triple to center that snapped an 18 at-bat hitless stretch for the outfielder and scored when Eugenio Velez followed with a sacrifice fly.

Albuquerque pulled ahead, 2-1, in the home half of the second when Drew Butera lifted a two-out fly ball to right that was misjudged by Josh Prince, resulting in a go-ahead, two-run triple that plated Alex Castellanos (hit by pitch) and Brian Barden (single), who each had reached with two down.

The 'Topes added to their lead in the third with three more two-out scores against Jimmy Nelson. Elian Herrera doubled and Scott Van Slyke drew a two-out walk to put two runners on for Matt Angle, who ripped an RBI double off the left field wall for the first run. Castellanos followed with a two-run single up the middle that made it a 5-1 contest.

Nashville loaded the bases with one out against Magill in the fourth but netted only one run against the right-hander on Stephen Parker's RBI single, which pulled the Sounds within a 5-2 margin. Ozzie Chavez and Nelson struck out in succession to close out the frame.

The Sounds continued to mount the comeback in the fifth, netting another run against Magill. Davis and Hunter Morris each singled and were on the corners with two down for [blake] Lalli, who smashed an opposite-field fly ball to left-center that hopped over the wall for a ground-rule double in a bit of bad luck. Without bouncing out of play, both Morris and Prince would have likely scored on the RBI two-bagger.

Magill (5-1) hurled a quality start to pick up the win for the Isotopes, holding the Sounds to three runs on eight hits while striking out nine batters during his six innings of work.

Nelson (3-6) drew a loss for the second straight outing for Nashville after giving up five runs on six hits over six frames. All five runs plated with two outs against the right-hander.

Onelki Garcia worked two scoreless frames for Albuquerque before Javy Guerra took over in the ninth and ran into trouble.

The Sounds put the potential tying run on base in the final frame after Davis dribbled an infield single with two outs and Velez followed with a single to right to extend his season-best hitting streak and on-base streaks to 10 games and 24 games, respectively. Guerra recovered to strike out Morris to quell the threat and nail down his ninth save of the year.

The teams continue the series with another 7:35 p.m. CT contest on Thursday night. Left-hander Zach Kroenke (5-14, 4.41) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Albuquerque right-hander Red Patterson (6-4, 3.35).
