Final, Game One: @Lakeland 4, Brevard County 3

Brevard County Box Score

We noted earlier in the thread the rough sub-inning of work by RHP Mark Rogers and the nice relief effort by RHP Alex Moore. Fellow righty Eric Arnett helped Moore out of a two-on, no-out situation in the 5th and tossed a scoreless 6th as well.

Brevard County Game Log

The work by Moore and Arnett allowed the Manatees to make a last-ditch effort in the final inning of this seven-inning game. Down 4-0 heading in:

Brevard County Top of the 7th

Pitching Change: Chad Green replaces Octavio Dotel.

D' Vontrey Richardson singles on a fly ball to right fielder Jeff McVaney.

Yadiel Rivera pops out to second baseman Devon Travis.

Nick Ramirez doubles (24) on a fly ball to left fielder Jason Krizan. D' Vontrey Richardson to 3rd.

Mitch Haniger lines out to second baseman Devon Travis.

Cody Hawn singles on a fly ball to center fielder Chad Wright. D' Vontrey Richardson scores. Nick Ramirez scores.

Pitching Change: Jose Valdez replaces Chad Green.

Cameron Garfield doubles (19) on a fly ball to right fielder Jeff McVaney. Cody Hawn scores.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Ben McMahan replaces Cameron Garfield.

T. J. Mittelstaedt pops out to shortstop Dixon Machado.

Darn...

Manatees stranded ten and never went down 1-2-3 in the game. Twelve hits but not surprisingly, zero walks. No team strikes out more and walks less (by a lot) in the Florida State League than this Brevard squad.

Nick Ramirez was 2-for-4 but can't get the elusive HR -- updating the media notes through Game One:

"CHASING HISTORY: Nick Ramirez has 18 home runs, 1 shy of Hunter Morris’ franchise record of 19 (set in 2011). Ramirez has not homered in 34 games since going long in consecutive contests, 7/12-14...This is the longest stretch of his professional career without a home run."

Ho-hum, two more hits for D'Vontrey Richardson, now at .356/.391/.429 (.820 OPS) through Game One. It'd be nice if he could turn out to be a stay-healthy Lorenzo Cain, wouldn't it?

And oh yeah, that's the 39-year-old Octavio Dotel in your box score.

Final: Pensacola 8 Huntsville 1

Pensacola dominated Huntsville from the start and defeated the Stars 8-1 to extend the Stars losing streak to 4. Taylor Jungmann took the mound to start for Huntsville. Jungmann (9-9, 4.14) lasted 5 innings, allowing 5 runs, all earned on 7 hits 2 walks, and a hit batter while striking out 2. He allowed a home run and uncorked a wild pitch. The loss is Jungmann's 3rd straight and it pushed his season ERA over 4. Taylor threw 86 pitches tonight, 45 for strikes. With probably 2 starts left in his season, Jungmann is sitting at 130 innings. Last season he threw 153 for Brevard County. Possibly setting up for the Arizona Fall League?

Manager Darnell Coles used 4 different pitchers to cover the last 4 innings after Jungmann departed. Michael Olmsted worked a 1-2-3 6th, throwing 12 pitches. Greg Holle struggled with the 7th. He allowed 3 earned runs on 3 hits and 1 walk. He also threw a wild pitch. Holle's rough outing also pushed his season ERA over 4. Arcenio Leon pitched the 8th. He didn't allow a run but did give up 2 hits. David Goforth had the 9th. He was a bit of a struggle, but he didn't allow a run but did give up a hit and walked a batter. He also threw a wild pitch.

Huntsville Box Score

Once again, the Huntsville bats were silenced by the Blue Wahoos pitchers. For the 5th straight game, the Stars were held to 2 runs or less. Tonight, their only run scored in the 3rd on a Jason Rogers sacrifice fly. The RBI was Rogers's Southern League leading 81st. Rogers added a single in the 8th and has his average up to .269. Chadwin Stang reached base 3 times for the Stars and scored the Stars run. Stang was 2-4 and drew a walk. Shortstop Hector Gomez also had 2 hits, going 2-4. Second baseman Nick Shaw and catcher Joey Paciorek had the Stars other hits, both singles. Right fielder Brock Kjeldgaard didn't record a hit, but did draw 2 walks. Eric Patterson also drew a walk in a pinch hit appearance.

Huntsville Play By Play

The always exciting sacrifice fly highlight.

Huntsville Bottom of the 3rd

Chadwin Stang singles on a ground ball to center fielder Ryan LaMarre.

Nick Shaw singles on a ground ball to right fielder Brandon Short. Chadwin Stang to 3rd.

Jason Rogers out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Brandon Short. Chadwin Stang scores.

Rene Tosoni grounds out, shortstop Devin Lohman to first baseman Mike Costanzo. Nick Shaw to 2nd.

Brock Kjeldgaard walks.

Mike Walker flies out to left fielder Theo Bowe.

Huntsville (25-33 second half, 54-72 overall) and Pensacola will play game 5 of this 6 game series tomorrow afternoon. The game will feature the Stars "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" promotion. I didn't know Huntsville had an art museum. Give it a read, it sounds interesting. Game time is set for 1:03 Central. Righty Ariel Pena (7-8, 4.09) is scheduled to start for the Stars. Make sure to tune in starting at 12:48 to catch Stars Radio Broadcaster Alex Cohen with the pregame show.

How is it Austin Ross and others had to do due diligence on their Tommy John and other serious injury comebacks in Maryvale and yet Cody Scarpetta went straight to Brevard County less than a year after his surgery?

Obviously it's about player development and the hopeful return of a once-promising arm to form, but the young man has been on the verge of non-competitive (numbers, not heart) in 11 starts for the 'Tees, taxing their other arms and pretty much tossing the game in the gutter each time out.

Look what Ross is doing with the Rattlers now, at least his six mostly awkward initial starts were buried with the Arizona crew. Heck, Ross and Scarpetta could have piggy-backed in Maryvale for a few weeks.

End of rant.

Might of won the first half if Scarpetta stayed in Maryvale...

Bottom of the order was big -- two singles apiece for T.J. Mittelstaedt, Rafael Neda, and Ben McMahan.

Rattlers stumble early, can't come all the way back at Beloit

Taylor goes 5-for-5 for Wisconsin in 6-4 loss to Snappers

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BELOIT, WI - A six-run deficit was too much for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Tuesday night at Pohlman Field. The Beloit Snappers got in front of Wisconsin 6-0 in the bottom of the third inning and held on for a 6-4 win over their in-state rivals. Tyrone Taylor went 5-for-5 with a double and a pair of runs scored to try and bring the Rattlers back. But the Snappers held on for the win and dampened Wisconsin's playoff chances.

The Timber Rattlers (54-68 overall, 25-32 second half) got a walk to start the game against Beloit starting pitcher Dylan Covey, but the right-hander got the next batter to hit into a 6-4-3 double play. Taylor and Garrett Cooper followed with singles to put runners on the corners. Parker Berberet was next and he sent a screaming line drive right at the second baseman for the final out of the inning.

Beloit (69-58, 26-31) got their leadoff batter in the bottom of the first inning aboard on an error. A walk, a strikeout, and another walk loaded the bases. John Wooten stepped to the plate, but the first run of the inning scored before he took a swing. A wild pitch by Rattlers starter Mike Strong let a run cross the plate. Wooten would follow that with a double to right-center and the Rattlers were down 3-0.

There was controversy in the second inning. Orlando Arcia tried to reach on a bunt single and was called out on a close play. Rattlers manager Matt Erickson discussed the call with base umpire Masa Ichiki and was ejected. Tuesday was the second game in a row Ichiki ran Erickson from the game. On Monday, the Wisconsin skipper was told to shower early after a Timber Rattlers home run was overturned into a foul ball in the top o the seventh.

Matt Olson extended Beloit's lead with a three-run home run to right-center in the bottom of the third inning. His 19th home run of the season put the Snappers up 6-0.

The Rattlers got to Covey with a two-out rally in the top of the fifth. Taylor reached on an infield single with two outs. Cooper drew a walk. Parker Berberet singled to knock in Taylor and knock Covey out of the game one out shy of qualifying for his first professional win.

The Taylor/Cooper duo combined to get Wisconsin their second run of the game. Taylor singled, his fourth hit of the game, with two outs in the seventh. Cooper followed with a triple to right-center to score Taylor and cut Beloit's lead to four runs.

Beloit brought Kris Hall into the game for the top of the eighth inning and he proceeded to walk the bases loaded. Max Walla drew a leadoff walk. Hall got the second out, but walked Tyler Roberts and Adrian Williams to load the bases. Chris Lamb took over for Hall to face Rodriguez.

The Rattlers leadoff batter worked the count full against Lamb and sent a hard grounder right at Beloit's second baseman. The Snappers got the force at second, but the throw to first was wild. That allowed both Walla and Roberts to score and the Rattlers pulled to within 6-4.

Rodolfo Fernandez, who came on for the Rattlers in the bottom of the fourth tossed a perfect bottom of the eighth inning. Fernandez pitched five scoreless innings for Wisconsin on Tuesday night to extend his current scoreless streak to 17 innings.

Taylor led off the Wisconsin ninth inning with a double inside the first base bag. Taylor became the first Timber Rattler to get five hits in a game since TJ Mittelstaedt on July 5, 2011. Mittelstaedt also happened to have his five-hit game at Beloit's Pohlman Field.

Berberet came to the plate with one out and Taylor still at second base. Berberet sent a line drive ticketed for left field, but shortstop Daniel Robertson speared the liner for out number two and fired to second to double Taylor off for the final out of the game.

The Rattlers playoff chances took a big hit with losses in the last two games of the series at Beloit. The Clinton LumberKings won on Monday and Tuesday at Kane County to extend their lead over the Timber Rattlers to five games with thirteen games remaining in the regular season.

Wisconsin begins a three-game series at Clinton on Wednesday night. Tyler Wagner (9-8, 3.24) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton has named David Holman (3-6, 3.29) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280 or IHeartRadio beginning with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

HOME RUN:

BEL:

Matt Olson (19th, 2 on in 3rd inning off Mike Strong, 1 out)

WP: Trevor Bayless (1-1)

LP: Mike Strong (3-3)

SAVE: Chris Lamb (2)

TIME: 2:47

ATTN: 1,337

Wisconsin Boxscore

Well at least Tyrone Taylor had a heck of a night going 5-5 with a 2B! Oddly even though the Rattlers had 11 hits as a team Garrett Cooper had the only other multi-hit game putting up a 2-4 effort with a 3B and a BB. Cooper has been fantastic since being drafted, hard to have any complaints about his career thus far. Maybe that's not so odd as I think about it as they had 7 of the 11 hits between them.

Michael Strong didn't pitch well, but Rodolfo Fernandez was fantastic through his 5 innings, though I still like him as a reliever long-term.

Final, AZL Padres 9, @AZL Brewers 2, called after 6.5 innings, rain

AZL Brewers Box Score

The rain clouds had the mercy rule in mind here.

Except for a single out by RHP Dylan Brock stranding two inherited runners, none of the pitchers here will be framing tonight's box score. RHP and starter Drew Ghelfi, post-suspension LHP Alan Williams, and bloom-is-way-off-the-rose RHP Gian Rizzo combined to allow nine runs (eight earned) on 13 hits and three walks.

On further review -- the starting box score lineup changed after the earlier Tucker Neuhaus post, he did play here, good, although he committed two fielding errors at third base. RF Elvis Rubio's hit streak was not ended by Mother Nature, now at 15, we believe, with a single in two trips.

Stars Downed By Crabbe, Blue Wahoos

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

After being swept in a rain-shortened doubleheader one night earlier, the Huntsville Stars were downed by the Pensacola Blue Wahoos by a score of 8-1 on Tuesday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

From the get-go, the Blue Wahoos took control of the game against Stars starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann.

In the second inning, Pensacola starting pitcher Tim Crabbe helped out his own cause with an RBI single to put the BlueWahoos on the board. Two batters later, shortstop Devin Lohman hit a three-run homer to make the score 4-0.

That was all that Crabbe and the rest of the Blue Wahoos pitching staff needed. The 25-year-old righty improved to 7-8 on the season after giving up just one run on five hits in six innings. To secure the victory, relievers Chris Manno and Michael Lorenzen blanked the Huntsville bats over the final three innings of the game.

Aside from the rocky fourth inning, Jungmann allowed a runner to score in the fifth inning on a wild pitch to complete his line. The 23-year-old righty fell to an even 9-9 on the year after giving up five earned runs on seven hits in five innings on work.

Pensacola scored their other three runs in the eighth inning against Stars righty Greg Holle. Blue Wahoos first baseman Mike Costanzo came through with a two-run double while catcher Tucker Barnhart pitched in with a sacrifice fly.

For the Stars, their only run on the game came in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Jason Rogers.

Aside from the sole run, outfielder Chadwin Stang and shortstop Hector Gomez paced the Stars offense with two hits apiece.

The defeat for the Stars marks their fourth loss in a row. Huntsville has also scored two runs or less in each of the last five contests.

On Wednesday, the Stars will play game five of a six-game series against the BlueWahoos to try to get back to their winning ways. Huntsville will send RHP Ariel Pena (7-8, 4.09 ERA) moundward while Pensacola will counter with RHP Josh Smith (9-9, 3.67 ERA).

Following a stretch of 11 consecutive starts without a win, Pena is looking for his third straight victory.

First pitch is at a special 1:03 PM time.

'Tees split Tuesday's twinbill at Lakeland

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees split Tuesday night's doubleheader with the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium as they were edged in the first game 4-3, but managed to win the second game, 3-2.

In game one, the Flying Tigers scored all four of their runs in the first inning off of 'Tees starting pitcher Mark Rogers. Rogers went just 2/3 of an inning as two of the four runs were unearned on three hits and two walks. All four runs scored with two outs as Rogers retired the first two batters of the inning.

Alex Moore relieved Rogers and held Lakeland to four hits and two walks over the next 3.1 innings. Eric Arnett followed with two scoreless innings of his own.

The Manatees were finally able to get on the board in their last at-bat in the top of the seventh, thanks to a two-out, two-run single from Cody Hawn.

Cameron Garfield followed that up with a double to right to put the tying run on second with two outs as Ben McMahan came in to run for Garfield.

The rally would end there though as T.J. Mittelstaedt popped out to the shortstop to end the game.

Brevard County tallied 12 hits in the opening contest with Hawn, Garfield, D'Vontrey Richardson, Nick Ramirez and Greg Hopkins recording two each.

In game two, it was another short outing for a Manatees' starting pitcher as Cody Scarpetta recorded just one out and allowed two runs on one hit and three walks.

Again like in game one, the bullpen filled in admiraily as Taylor Mangum threw 4.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Brevard was able to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth as Mitch Haniger drove in Ramirez with a double and then Mittelstaedt brought Haniger home on an RBI single through the left side.

The game would remain 2-2 until the top of the ninth inning as a two-out single from McMahan scored Mittelstaedt and gave the 'Tees the lead.

Tommy Toledo then came on in the bottom of the ninth to shut the door for a perfect inning to earn his 17th save of the season.

The bottom of the order got the job done for the Manatees in the second game of the double dip as Mittelstaedt, Rafael Neda and McMahan combined for six of Brevard County's nine hits.

Brevard County and Lakeland will continue their four-game series on Wednesday night at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, beginning at 6:30 PM (5:30 Central).

Jacob Barnes (8-5, 3.21) will get the nod for the Manatees on the hill, while southpaw Kyle Ryan (11-6, 3.16) will toe the rubber for the Flying Tigers.

Sounds Drop Series Finale To Express, 7-5

Nashville Sounds

Eugenio Velez (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds fell 7-5 to the Round Rock Express on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium in the finale of a five-game series.

Nashville (51-80), which held a 5-1 lead in the fifth before Round Rock plated six unanswered runs, lost four of five to the Express in the series.

Round Rock grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning against Johnny Hellweg. Alex Buchholz (4-for-5) doubled to right and came around to score on Jim Adduci's two-out RBI infield single.

The Sounds jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning, sending 10 men to the plate to post a five-spot against Express starter Ryan Feierabend.

Eugenio Velez, who extended his season-best hitting streak to nine games with a 2-for-4 effort, led off with a single to left, moved to second on a Caleb Gindl single, advanced to third on an error by Round Rock shortstop Guilder Rodriguez, and scored the tying run on a passed ball.

Hunter Morris put Nashville into the lead with an RBI single and the Sounds added additional runs in the inning on run-scoring singles from Stephen Parker and Josh Prince as well as an RBI groundout off the bat of Kentrail Davis.

Velez is batting .381 (32-for-84) in his last 23 contests, reaching base in all of them. Gindl's fourth-inning single extended the outfielder's longest hit streak of the year to 11 games (16-for-45, .356).

Round Rock got three runs back from Hellweg in the fifth to pull back within a run at 5-4. The Express drew a pair of walks sandwiched around a Joey Butler double before Hellweg uncorked a wild pitch to bring in a run. Following a strikeout, Robinson Chirinos dribbled a run-scoring infield single up the third base line, which chased the right-hander from the contest. The third Express run came with reliever Jesus Sanchez on the hill on Rodriguez's two-out RBI single.

Hellweg did not factor in the decision after allowing four runs on seven hits over his 4 1/3 frames of work. He threw a Sounds season-high 112 pitches in the contest, issuing a season-high six walks to go along with five strikeouts.

Rehabbing left-hander Michael Kirkman (1-2), who retired 15 of his 16 batters faced to close out the game for Round Rock, picked up the victory with five hitless innings of work for the Express, fanning seven Sounds in the outing.

Morris was robbed of his team-leading 23rd homer of the year in the sixth when Joey Butler reached above the 6-foot high right field wall to make a catch.

The visitors pulled back in front, 6-5, in the sixth on Aaron Cunningham's two-out, two-run triple to right-center off Sanchez, who suffered his third blown save of the year.

Round Rock added an insurance run in the seventh against Sanchez on Adduci's sacrifice fly.

Sanchez (4-3) took the loss after giving up three runs in his 2 2/3 innings of work.

Right-handed reliever Dustin Molleken continued to impress for the Sounds, working two scoreless frames. In five appearances for Nashville, the fireballer has allowed only one hit and posted nine strikeouts in his 7.0 scoreless innings.

The Sounds embark upon their final road trip of the season on Wednesday, when they travel to Albuquerque (AAA-Dodgers) for the 7:35 p.m. CT opener of a five-game series. Right-hander Jimmy Nelson (3-5, 3.78) will toe the slab for Nashville to face Isotopes right-hander Matt Magill (4-1, 3.04).
