Prospect Hot Sheet (Aug. 16): Mets’ Rafael Montero Is Always In Command

3. Christian Villanueva, 3b, Cubs

Team: Double-A Tennessee (Southern)

Age: 22

Why He’s Here: .458/.519/1.000 (11-for-24), 2 HR, 7 2B, 7 RBIs, 6 R, 3 BB, 2 SO, 0-for-1 SB

The Scoop: When the Rangers traded Villanueva and righthander Kyle Hendricks to the Cubs last year to add Ryan Dempster, the move made sense for Texas, where Villanueva was blocked by Adrian Beltre and Mike Olt. One year later, Villanueva is again blocked by Olt—though Olt’s struggles have certainly narrowed the gap between the two—with Kris Bryant, Jeimer Candelario and potentially Javier Baez also competing with Villanueva to be Chicago’s third baseman of the future. At some point, that could make Villanueva trade bait once again. For now, he’s one of the hottest hitters in the minors with a .305/.351/.543 slash line since the all-star break. His 36 doubles are a career high, and his 16 home runs are one off the 17 he hit two years ago in the low Class A South Atlantic League.

9. Kris Bryant, 3b, Cubs

Team: high Class A Daytona (Florida State)

Age: 21

Why He’s Here: .444/.469/.852 (12-for-27), 2 HR, 3 2B, 1 3B, 7 RBIs, 4 R, 3 BB, 9 SO

The Scoop: If you ever wanted to see College Player of the Year and No. 2 overall draft pick Kris Bryant don a cap featuring a sunglasses-wearing cartoon bear, then here’s your chance. You’ll want to act quickly, though, seeing as he’s launched two homers and gone 4-for-13 (.308) in his first four games for the Daytona Cubs. At three minor leagues stops, Bryant has hit .333/.381/.679 with 16 extra-base hits (including six homers) in 24 games as a professional.

10. Javier Baez, ss, Cubs

Team: Double-A Jackson (Southern)

Age: 20

Why He’s Here: .370/.433/.704 (10-for-27), 2 HR, 3 2B, 5 R, 7 RBIs, 3 BB, 6 SO, 2-for-2 SB

The Scoop: The hottest hitter in the Southern League has been on quite the tear. Baez has eight multi-hit games in his last 12. He’s 7-for-his-last-7 on steals and he’s reduced his at-one-point obscene number of errors, committing nine errors in 34 games at shortstop in Double-A (.944 fielding percentage). While that’s still more miscues than the Cubs would like to see, he has made significant strides at converting chances into outs, as attested to by his poor .922 fielding percentage at high Class A Daytona, where errors tended to occur in bunches.

13. Gregory Polanco, cf, Pirates

Team: Double-A Altoona (Eastern)

Age: 21

Why He’s Here: .455/.520/.773 (10-for-22), 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 6 R, 4 RBIs, 3 BB, 2 SO, 3-for-3 SB

The Scoop: This season has been everything that Polanco and the Pirates could have hoped for. He made the midseason jump from high Class A to Double-A look easy. He has more walks (29) than strikeouts (25) since arriving at Double-A, and his three steals this week puts him within striking distance of reaching 40 for the second consecutive season (he has 37). Pittsburgh just called up corner outfielder Andrew Lambo and his 31 minor league home runs, but if he stumbles—and he did spend parts of six seasons in Double-A—then Polanco could be next in line for an big league audition.

Prospect Hot Sheet Chat With Ben Badler

Stephen A (Chicago): Is Bryant's bat good enough that he could see Wrigley next season?

Ben Badler: Doubtful. 2015 is more likely.

Mike (Phoenix): Is Alex Reyes the next big pitching name to come from the production line that is the Cards farm system?

Ben Badler: Yes. Not the same high-octane fastball you’ll see from a lot of their arms, but the stuff is legit and he has a repeatable delivery that helps him throw strikes.

BB (Hagerstown, MD): Who's more likely to start next yr in the majors: Rafeal Montero, Erik Johnson, Yordano Ventura, or James Nelson?

Ben Badler: Ventura, Montero and Johnson should all be there, with that order in terms of impact. I’m not at optimistic on Nelson.

Howard (Freeport, ME): Name one farm that has risen up the organization rankings the most this year and one farm that has fallen the furthest.

Ben Badler: Rising: Cubs. Falling: Rangers, although a lot of that is due to graduations and trades.

Tommy (Pittsburgh): Ben- what is your overall opinion on Billy Hamilton? Are you encouraged by his improved hitting the past month or two (albeit lackluster OBP for a potential leadoff hitter) and chalking up his first half to adjusting to AAA, or are you in the camp of evaluators who think his hit tool will never develop to an everyday productive leadoff hitter level?

Ben Badler: Can I be somewhere in between? One of the encouraging things we saw from Hamilton last year was that he was showing the patience to work the count and get on base by any means necessary. More advanced pitchers are starting to attack him in the strike zone and the walks are disappearing, which is concerning because for a guy with minimal power, he has to be able to take his walks. There’s still potential for him to get back to that approach that allows him to be a productive offensive player, but I’d like to see him at least start next year by repeating Triple-A.

Mike (NYC): Will Oscar Taveras repeat AAA next year, given that he was active for less than two months?

Ben Badler: As long as he’s healthy by the start of the season and they save a spot for him in the outfield, I’d put him straight on the big league roster. It’s a shame he was blocked this year and then had to deal with the injuries, otherwise he’d be a legitimate rookie of the year candidate. There’s not really any development left that he needs in Triple-A.

Wisconsin stuns Snappers with late comeback

Arcia's two-out, three-run triple in 9th ties game; Rattlers win 4-3 in 10

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BELOIT, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers played the waiting game on Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field and it paid off for them despite almost waiting too long. The Rattlers trailed the Beloit Snappers 3-0 with one out and none on in the top of the ninth inning only to rally for an unlikely 4-3 ten inning victory. Orlando Arcia tied the game on a bases loaded triple with two outs in the ninth and Garrett Cooper drove in what turned out to be the game winner in the tenth. The win was the second straight for Wisconsin and kept them within three games of the second half Western Division Wild Card.

The Snappers (67-58 overall, 24-31 second half) took the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning. Dayton Alexander started the frame with a single. He stole second and went to third on an error. Rattlers starter Austin Ross got the first out with a strikeout to keep Alexander at third base. But, a grounder to short off the bat of Brett Vertigan drove in the run and Beloit had a 1-0 lead.

Beloit added to their lead in the fifth inning. They loaded the bases on three singles. Rattlers starter Austin Ross jammed Aaron Shipman, who sent a broken bat grounder to Chris McFarland at second base. But, the Rattlers could only get the out at second base and the fielder's choice got the run home from third for a 2-0 lead.

Wisconsin (54-66, 25-30) managed three hits off Beloit starter Deyvi Jimenez through six innings. Jimenez walked two, struck out five, and turned the game over to his bullpen in the top of the seventh.

But, before the first Beloit reliever took the hill in the seventh, the Snappers offense added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Daniel Robertson doubled to lead off the inning. John Wooten doubled with one out to drive in Robertson for a 3-0 lead.

Nolan Sanburn took over for Jimenez and tossed two more scoreless innings before turning the ball over to Tyler Vail in the top of the ninth. To this point in the game, only one Rattler player had reached second base. That player was Tyrone Taylor, who singled to start the game and stole second, but was left stranded there when the top of the first inning ended.

Vail retired the first batter of the inning. Then, things got interesting. Garrett Cooper, Parker Berberet, and Max Walla singled to load the bases. Vail got the second out with a strikeout. Orlando Arcia was next and he sent a sinking line drive to right. Aaron Shipman tried to make a diving catch to end the game. The ball hit in front of Shipman and he could not keep the ball in front of him. The ball rolled all the way to the wall and all three base runners scored on the triple by Arcia to tie the game.

Wisconsin reliever Taylor Wall worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth inning and the game went to extra innings.

Adrian Williams and Victor Roache both singled with one out in the top of the tenth against Chris Lamb, the fourth Beloit pitcher of the game. Williams and Roache pulled a double steal on a 1-2 pitch to Cooper. The pitch missed for ball two and Cooper was at the plate with two runners in scoring position. That situation forced the Snappers to bring their infield in to try and cut down the run at the plate. Cooper took advantage of the defensive alignment and slammed a pitch through the right side of the infield. Williams scored for a 4-3 lead. Roache was out at the plate on the play and the Rattlers would not score again. But, they did not need to score another run.

Wall did allow a leadoff single to Shipman in the bottom of the tenth, but he retired the next three batters without incident to cap another comeback win over the Snappers by Wisconsin.

Just thirteen days ago - on August 5 - the Timber Rattlers scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Snappers 6-5 at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Game three of the series is Monday night at Pohlman Field. The Timber Rattlers have Ryan Gibbard (4-4, 4.82) as the scheduled starting pitcher. Beloit will send Derek DeYoung (5-5, 4.22) to the mound. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

WP: Taylor Wall (2-3)

LP: Chris Lamb (2-5)

TIME: 2:58

ATTN: 1,359

Wisconsin Boxscore

What a great come from behind victory!

Austin Ross continues to make progress coming back from surgery, allowing just 2 earned runs on 8 hits and 1 walk against 6 strike outs.

Ryan Fasano pitched a clean 2 innings and Taylor Wall followed up with 2 clean innings of his own for the victory. I had a busy day and didn't tune until the bottom of the 9th so I missed what happened but I believe Mehring said Fasano left with an injury after being hit by a batted ball?

Tyrone Taylor (2-5), Garrett Cooper (2-5), and Max Walla (2-3,BB) had the multi-hit games.

Wisconsin Recap

What I believe to be the Fasano injury.

Beloit Bottom of the 8th

  • Defensive Substitution: Adrian Williams replaces third baseman Mike Garza, batting 3rd, playing third base.
Daniel Robertson grounds out, shortstop Orlando Arcia to first baseman Garrett Cooper.
    Chris Bostick strikes out swinging.
John Wooten singles on a fly ball to right fielder Max Walla.
Ryan Mathews singles on a line drive to pitcher Ryan Fasano. John Wooten to 2nd.
    Matt Olson strikes out swinging.

edit. Fixed Ross' line.

Pena Powers Offense in 5th Straight W

Left fielder goes 4 for 5 with four extra-base knocks, Helena sluggs 17 hits

By Zac Vierra / Helena Brewers

The Helena bats came alive on Sunday afternoon as the Brewers slugged 17 hits in a 13-5 win over Grand Junction. It was the fifth straight win for the Brew Crew.

Jose Pena (above, photo by Seth Eikomstead) led the offensive attack going 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBI.

Pena doubled in the fourth, hit a solo homer to give the Brewers a 8-4 lead in the fifth, doubled in the seventh, and drove home the final Helena run of the afternoon on his fourth double in the eighth inning.

He finished the day with 10 total bases.

"He didn't try to change anything. Normally when a guy hits a home run it turns into, 'Let's see how far I can hit the next ball,' but instead of doing that it was a double and the next ball was a double so he remained consistent with his swing," said Helena manager Tony Diggs.

Michael Ratterree also homered in the game as he gave the Brewers an early lead with a solo shot in the first.

It was his tenth homer of the season and his fifth in the first inning this year.

The entire offense contributed as Jesse Weiss had three hits in the contest and Taylor Brennan, Dustin Houle, Jalen Harris, and Nathan Orf all collected two hits apiece.

"I don't know how many extra base hits we had but we had a number of them. We had a lot of doubles in the gap and we had a couple long balls too. Today was definitely an offensive day," said Diggs.

The big inning for the Brewers would come in the fourth inning when they were trailing 3-1.

Brennan led off the frame with a double to left and Houle would follow with a single to right. When the throw by the right fielder was wild, Brennan scored and Houle moved to second.

Pena would follow with a bloop double down the right field line that dropped in. Harris would then pull a single to left to plate Houle. Pena scored when the left fielder bobbled the ball as the Brewers took the lead.

Weiss would follow with a single and Orf would then drive home Harris with a single to make it 5-3.

Weiss and Orf would later score on a pair of wild pitches to give the Brewers a 7-3 lead.

The Rockies would get a run back in the top of the fifth on the second sac fly of the day by Jordan Patterson and with two outs and runners on the corners, Helena starter Zach Quintana was taken out of the game.

Chris Razo then got Ryan Garvey to groundout to end the threat.

In his first game back after being sent down from Wisconsin, Razo would earn the win, his sixth of the year with Helena, all of which have came out of the bullpen.

"That's his forte. Not that it's necessarily a win, but to come in shut down the problem right then and let us keep playing. It's good to have him back" said Diggs.

Tyler Linehan would allow just one run in the final three innings to earn his third save of the year.

The Brewers will look for a sweep of the Rockies in the final game of the homestand on Monday night. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m (8:05 Central).

Final, @Helena 13, Grand Junction 5

Helena Box Score

Jose Pena raised his SLG to .434 with today's extra-base fest. Jesse Weiss has patiently sat on the sideline (only 12 games played), but swatted three singles today after a five-day layoff. Team was 8-for-18 with RISP, just a great offensive day as was made so evident in Zac's game summary. The Independent Record should have more in the AM.

Helena Game Log

RHP Zach Quintana is a "young" 19 (April birthday, 3rd round, 2012), so the fact he's getting such consistent opportunities to be the main man in the Helena rotation speaks about his potential. Hadn't peeked at his vitals in a while, 5'11" surprised me, pictured more of a classic frame, to be honest.

This isn't the case, but it feels like the Brewers are extra-anxious to see one of these high school pitching draft picks (Quintana, Danny Keller - 2011, 6th round), ascend nicely -- post-Yovani Gallardo, who? Credit for Jake Odorizzi? Will Inman, Jeffrey Jeffress, Evan Anundsen, Odorizzi, Seth Lintz, Dylan Covey, Jorge Lopez, Quintana and Devin Williams - top 5 round high school pitchers since Yovani.

Final: Pensacola 4 Huntsville 1

The Huntsville Stars post-season hopes grew dimmer with a 4-1 loss to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Sunday afternoon. The Stars started Drew Gagnon today. He worked 6 1/3 innings, allowing all 4 Blue Wahoos runs on 8 hits, 3 walks and a hit batter while striking out 3. 2 of the 8 hits allowed were home runs. He's now given up 11 home runs in 73.1 innings. For comparison, Victor Mateo of Montgomery leads the Southern League with 17 home runs allowed in 131.1 innings. Gagnon threw 94 pitches, 58 for strikes today. His GO/FO ratio was 9-3.

The Stars bullpen worked another 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Eric Marzec came on to work the final 2/3 of the 7th. He allowed a walk and struck out 1. Micah Owings was brought on to work the 8th. He allowed a hit and struck out 1. Michael Olmsted made his Huntsville debut in the 9th and allowed 2 walks.

Huntsville Box Score

Huntsville's offense was stymied again today, only scoring 1 on 7 hits and 3 walks. Third baseman Mike Walker was the only Stars hitter with more than 1 hit. Walker went 2-4 today, both hits singles. First Baseman Jason Rogers reached base twice, he singled and drew a walk. He also drove in the lone Stars run, his league leading 80th RBI. With the 1-4 performance, Rogers is now hitting .269. Chadwin Stang also reached base twice with a single and a walk. Nick Shaw scored that lone Stars run. He was 1-4. Brock Kjeldgaard and Eric Patterson added the Stars other hits. Shea Vucinich pinch hit and drew a walk.

Huntsville Play By Play

The Stars only run scored in the 6th

Final: Daytona 5, Brevard County 3

Big inning for Cubs dooms 'Tees in 5-3 loss

By Al Hernandez / Brevard County Manatees

Manatees starting pitcher Brent Suter, seen here in a game from earlier this season, threw six scoreless innings but it was all for naught as Brevard County fell 5-3 to the Daytona Cubs on Sunday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A five-run seventh inning for the Daytona Cubs spoiled a six shutout inning outing for Brent Suter as the Brevard County Manatees fell 5-3 on Sunday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Suter (7-8, 3.14 ERA) limited the Cubs' offense to just four hits and a walk while striking out six. Suter left the game while leading 1-0, in line to receive the win.

Stephen Peterson entered the game in relief of Suter in the seventh inning. Elliot Soto, the first man Peterson faced, reached base on a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Brandon Macias. Pin-Chieh Chen tied the game with an RBI single and that was followed by a Zeke DeVoss single. Wes Darvill loaded the bases with another bunt single.

Dustin Geiger plated Chen from third and gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead when he bounced into a double play to Yadiel Rivera. Dan Vogelbach followed Geiger with a two-out, two-run home run and then Kris Bryant followed with a solo shot to make it a 5-1 contest.

Peterson was charged with five runs and the loss in his only inning of work.

The Manatees (24-30 second half, 61-60 overall) cut their deficit to 5-3 in the top of the eighth inning. Macias drew a walk to begin the inning, before D'Vontrey Richardson singled and Rivera walked to load the bases with no outs. Nick Ramirez followed Rivera's walk by recording a RBI ground out.

Brevard County had kicked off the scoring in the top of the third frame. With one out in the inning, T.J. Mittelstaedt cranked a Scott Baker pitch over the right field fence for a solo shot, his 11th homer of the season.

Baker was making his second Major League rehab start with Daytona (30-19, 65-50). He tossed three frames before being lifted. Baker allowed just one run on three hits.

Austin Reed, with two outs in the ninth, allowed a double to Mittelstaedt and hit Macias with a pitch, bringing Richardson to the plate. Richardson, already with two hits on the night, struck out to end the game.

The Manatees have Monday off before hitting the road for a four-game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (25-24, 55-62). Tuesday's series opener will be a scheduled doubleheader.

Sounds Fall To Express In 10 Innings, 8-6

Velez, Gindl Homer For Nashville In Losing Effort

Nashville Sounds

http://i.imgur.com/FhaEedV.jpg

Eugenio Velez (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Round Rock Express rallied from a mid-game four-run deficit to eventually hang an 8-6, 10-inning defeat on the Nashville Sounds on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium.

Nashville (51-78), which led 5-1 entering the sixth inning, fell to 1-7 in extra-inning play this season (0-4 at home).

In the decisive tenth frame, Round Rock loaded the bases with no outs on a walk sandwiched by a pair of singles against Travis Webb. Engel Beltre delivered a go-ahead RBI single to center before Alex Buchholz chased Webb with an RBI groundout that gave the Express an 8-6 lead.

Express closer Cory Burns worked into and out of a jam in the bottom of the tenth to close out the victory. Caleb Gindl drew a leadoff walk and moved to third when Robinzon Diaz followed with a double, putting the potential tying run at second with no outs. Burns recovered to strike out Hunter Morris and Hainley Statia in succession before retiring Blake Lalli on a game-ending groundout to nail down his 19th save of the year.

Ben Rowan (2-1) was awarded the victory for Round Rock despite suffering a blown save in the contest. Webb (2-5) drew the loss for Nashville after allowing the go-ahead scores in his two innings of action.

Right-hander Alfredo Figaro made his Sounds debut and turned in a good effort. He worked four-plus innings, allowing one run on five hits with three walks issued and four strikeouts while throwing 72 pitches in the outing.

Round Rock took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning against Figaro. Former Brewers farmhand Guilder Rodriguez doubled and scored on Jim Adduci's two-out single to center.

Second baseman Eugenio Velez powered the Sounds to a 2-1 lead in the home half of the frame when he drilled his first home run as a member of the team, a two-out, two-run drive to right off Josh Lindblom. Kentrail Davis, who drew a two-out walk preceding Velez, also scored on the blast.

Velez has reached base in 21 straight contests, hitting .382 (29-for-76) over that span.

Gindl kept the one-run lead intact in the fourth when he threw out Joey Butler at the plate as he attempted to score from second on Mike Bianucci's one-out single to right. It was Gindl's team-leading eighth outfield assist of the year and fifth at the plate.

Gindl continued his strong night in the fifth when he upped the Nashville lead to 5-1 with a three-run homer to right off Lindblom. Josh Prince (2-for-4) and Stephen Parker, who had each singled earlier in the frame, also scored on the two-out blast, Gindl's 11th big fly of the season. The roundtripper extended his longest hitting streak of the season to nine games (14-for-37, .378).

Round Rock got a pair of runs back in the sixth against reliever Zach Kroenke to pull within 5-3. Bianucci ripped an RBI single and Jared Hoying laced a run-scoring double to right during the frame.

The Express rallied to grab a 6-5 lead in the eighth by plating four runs off Johnnie Lowe. Catcher Zach Zaneski, batting .071 entering the at-bat, delivered the game-tying blow, a bases-loaded two-run single to center. After an intentional walk reloaded the bags, Webb took over on the hill for the Sounds and was greeted by a go-ahead sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Beltre. Two of the three runs in the inning, including the go-ahead score, were unearned following a fielding error by Prince at shortstop.

The back-and-forth affair continued in the bottom of the eighth as the Sounds squared the contest at six all on Statia's two-out RBI double into the left field corner off Rowen, which plated Diaz.

The team continue their series with a 7:05 p.m. contest on Monday night. Left-hander Aaron Laffey (6-6, 5.53) will make the start for the Sounds and face Round Rock right-hander Evan Meek (5-7, 3.79).

Some Giants fans called Velez "The Pharaoh" when he played in San Fran. I just think that should be noted.

Stars Lose Series Opener With BlueWahoos

Alex Cohen, Huntsville Stars

To begin a season-high six-game series against each other at Joe Davis Stadium, the Huntsville Stars fell to the Pensacola BlueWahoos by a score of 4-1 on Sunday evening.

After giving up just one hit over six scoreless innings in his last start, Stars starting pitcher Drew Gagnon took the hard-pressed loss on Sunday. The 23-year-old righty fell to 4-7 on the season by giving up four runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings pitched.

With two scoreless frames to begin the game, Gagnon ran into trouble to start off the top of the third inning when he hit BlueWahoos second baseman Corey Wimberly with a pitch. Two batters later, Wimberly scored on a two-run homer by outfielder Ryan Lamarre.

Following a single from shortstop Devin Lohman, Gagnon walked three straight batters, including catcher Tucker Barnhart with the bases loaded to score a run and give Pensacola 3-0 lead.

Pensacola tacked on their only other run in the fifth inning with a solo homer from first baseman Mike Costanzo. The roundtripper was the second of the year for the former big leaguer, both of them against the Stars.

Huntsville scored their sole run in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Jason Rogers. For Rogers, the run batted in was with 80th on the season, adding to his SL-leading total.

Aside from Rogers, the Stars were paced by two hits by third baseman Mike Walker at the plate.

For the BlueWahoos, starting pitcher Carlos Contreras improved to 2-2 on the season with the victory. The 22-year-old righty gave up one run in six innings of work.

To cap off the victory, BlueWahoos closer Trevor Bell notched his 14th save in 15 opportunities with a scoreless ninth inning.

The win for Pensacola snapped their season-high six-game losing streak.

On Monday, the Stars will play a doubleheader with the BlueWahoos to make up for a postponed game during their series in Pensacola last month. The Stars will send RHP Andy Moye (5-13, 4.20 ERA) and RHP Frankie De La Cruz (1-3, 5.06 ERA) to the bump in games one and two respectively while the BlueWahoos will counter with RHP John Moscot (1-1, 6.60 ERA) and RHP Daniel Renken (6-8, 3.67 ERA)

First pitch is at 4:43 CT.
