PCL undergoing realignment in 2014

But travel will still suck for the easternmost league franchise in Nashville -- heck, does this actually make it worse a bit?

The Sounds lose Iowa (Cubs) and Omaha (Royals), and gain Round Rock (Rangers) and New Orleans (Marlins) as divisional foes.

Of course, they'll still play Iowa and Omaha, just won't share a division with them.

With Sean Halton's callup to Milwaukee and Alfredo Figaro's option to Nashville (his final major league option, by the way), the Sounds will be going with the rarely-seen 10 position player, 15-man pitching staff tonight in a designated-hitter game vs. Round Rock.

Final: DSL Reds 1, DSL Brewers 5

DSL Brewers Box Score

In case you haven't noticed, and judging by the attendance you haven't, the Brewers have managed to win a few ball games, and are threatening to climb out of the cellar. 7 of the last 10 in fact for the Cerveceritos. Juan De Los Santos and Juan Ortiz provided all of the offense with De Los Santos belting a three run homer in the first inning, and Ortiz launching a two run shot in the fifth. The home run by De Los Santos was his second of the year, with his first coming yesterday. He went 2-for-4, with his other hit being a double, and scored two runs. Ortiz also walked and was hit by a pitch, in addition to his home run. Jorge Quiterio singled and drew a pair of walks. Juan De Leon had two hits and a walk in four plate appearances. Roosevert Chal walked twice and stole a base.

Orlando Torrez pitched six scoreless innings to pick up his second win of the season. He allowed just one hit and struck out two. Torrez recorded 11 ground ball outs to just two fly outs. Junior Flores pitched and inning and gave up the only run allowed by Brewers pitching. He didn't allow a hit, but walked a batter who advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on a ground out. Joshua Torres pitched the final two scoreless innings of relief.

Granted, Macias was not playing great but when you bring in a high prospect, you would expect him to be better, which hasn't been the case. I'm am and always will be confused as to who comes up with all these Prospect rankings. 85% of them are bogus.

Peoria's four-run seventh stops Wisconsin

Rattlers fall four games off the playoff pace with 7-2 loss to Chiefs

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Peoria Chiefs strung together five straight hits with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to score four runs and break a 2-2 tie Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field. Peoria went on to defeat the Timber Rattlers 7-2 and dim Wisconsin's playoff hopes.

Tyler Roberts put Wisconsin (52-66 overall, 23-30 second half) in front in the bottom of the second inning. Roberts doubled to right to drive in Parker Berberet with two outs and the Rattlers were up 1-0.

Wisconsin made it 2-0 in the third. Michael Reed was hit by a pitch with one out and took second on a wild pitch. Mike Garza followed with a double to left-center.

Peoria (65-55, 27-26) came back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning on back-to-back infield RBI singles. Ildemaro Vargas knocked in the first run and Breyvic Valera tied the game with his infield dribbler.

The Chiefs busted the game open with a two out rally in the top of the seventh against Rattlers reliever Harvey Martin. Valera doubled with two away and nobody on base. Jeremy Schaffer singled through the left side of the infield to get Valera home with the go-ahead run. Jordan Walton was next and he doubled to send Schaffer home. Then, Trevor Martin tripled to center to make the score 5-2. Nick Martini followed with a double to score Martin and the Chiefs were up by four.

Brad Watson, the Chiefs starting pitcher, settled in after the second inning RBI double by Garza. He retired the next eleven batters he faced. Max Walla snapped that streak with a double to start the Wisconsin seventh inning. Orlando Arcia followed with a single to left to put runners on the corners with no outs. That knocked Watson out of the game. But, the Rattlers would not score in the seventh.

Peoria added a run in the top of the eighth inning. Vargas tripled to drive in Charlie Tilson and the Chiefs had a 7-2 lead. That was it for the scoring.

Peoria's win allowed them to stay tied with the Clinton LumberKings for the second half Wild Card spot in the Western Division. Both teams are 27-26 and lead the Timber Rattlers by four games. Clinton's defeat of the Quad Cities River Bandits on Friday night allowed both the Chiefs and LumberKings to move to within 3-1/2 games of the River Bandits for the top second half playoff spot in the Western Division.

The Timber Rattlers begin a road trip on Saturday night at Beloit. Jorge Lopez (6-8, 5.23) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. The Snappers have Andres Avila (5-3, 5.96) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Game time at Pohlman Field is set for 7:00pm. Catch all of the action on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio night starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

Sounds Lose Series Opener To Express, 7-4

Nashville Sounds

Stephen Parker (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds dropped the opener of a five-game series against the Round Rock Express on Friday evening , falling 7-4 in front of 8,714 fans at Greer Stadium.

Nashville (50-77) out-hit the Express, 10-8, in the contest and Sounds pitchers combined to strike out a season-high 15 batters in the losing effort.

Round Rock got off to a quick start against Sounds right-hander Jimmy Nelson, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Alex Buchholz's one-out RBI single.

The Express doubled their lead to 2-0 in the third when Engel Beltre led off with a double and scored on Mike Bianucci's one-out single to center.

The Sounds got on the board in the home half of the third when Stephen Parker drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a Eugenio Velez sacrifice fly to make it a 2-1 contest.

Parker powered Nashville to a 3-2 lead in the fifth when he slugged his first home run in 192 at-bats, a massive two-run bomb to right off Round Rock starter Jake Brigham. Blake Lalli, who led off the frame with a single, also scored on the third baseman's seventh big fly of the year.

Round Rock reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth with a two-run homer of its own, a two-out Chris McGuinness shot to right-center off Nelson that put the visitors back on top by a 4-3 margin.

The Express tacked on three more scores later in the frame in unearned fashion after center fielder Kentrail Davis dropped Beltre's bases-loaded fly ball with two down. Two runs scored on that play and another when Buchholz added an infield single. On that play, Sounds shortstop Ozzie Chavez threw out Beltre at the plate as he also attempted to score.

Nelson (3-5) took the loss for the Sounds after allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits in his 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out nine batters, one shy of his career high. His 109 pitches on the night were the most by a Nashville hurler all season.

Lalli -- who is batting .351 (13-for-37) over his last nine games -- pushed across Nashville's fourth run of the night in the bottom of the sixth with a one-out RBI single up the middle to plate Robinzon Diaz (3-for-5).

Brigham (5-3) earned the win for the Express after giving up four runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 frames.

The Sounds missed opportunities to reduce the deficit in the sixth and seventh, leaving the bases loaded in both frames without scoring.

Express right-hander Wilmer Font closed out the contest with a pair of hitless innings to earn his fourth save of the year.

The team square off against at 6:35 p.m. on Saturday evening. Left-hander Chris Narveson (4-7, 5.14) will man the bump for the Sounds and face Round Rock right-hander Scott Richmond (4-5, 5.76).

Opportunities squandered in 5-1 loss at Daytona

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

An early 1-0 lead with three consecutive hits in the first inning had the Manatees looking good, but the Daytona Cubs scored five unanswered runs for a 5-1, series-opening victory on Friday night in Daytona.

Yadiel Rivera's one-out double was immediately followed by back-to-back singles from Nick Ramirez and Mitch Haniger, scoring Brevard County's lone run in the opening frame.

Both Ramirez and Haniger were stranded on their bags, the first two of ten men left on the base paths in the game.

The Manatees (23-29 second half, 60-59 overall) also tied a season high by striking out 15 times.

Daytona (29-18, 64-49) took advantage of a strong start by Corey Black. Despite scattering eight hits, Black (4-8) earned the win by holding Brevard to just the one run, striking out eight men and walking only one.

Behind him, the offense picked up the tying run in the second, then added three more in the third.

After Elliot Soto led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout, Dustin Geiger launched a two-run homer to give the home team a 4-1 lead.

In the sixth, top Cubs prospects Dan Vogelbach and Kris Bryant had back-to-back singles with a wild pitch in the middle. That put runners on the corners, allowing Vogelbach to score on a ground ball.

Brevard's Chad Pierce (5-6) was hit with the loss, taking blame for all five runs. He surrendered seven hits, though he walked just one batter and struck out four.

Both bullpens pitched well, with Zach Cates being the first man out for Daytona. He tossed three scoreless, one-hit frames with six strikeouts before Jeff Lorick finished it off with a perfect ninth.

Alex Moore threw two near-perfect innings for the Manatees. Vogelbach's second knock of the night was the only blemish on Moore's line, which also featured three Ks.

The series shifts to Space Coast Stadium on Saturday night, where the Manatees will enjoy a one-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM (5:35 Central). Starting for the 'Tees will be Tyler Cravy (3-2, 2.24 ERA), with Ivan Pineyro (2-0, 1.86 ERA) pitching against Brevard for the first time this year.

Black, Geiger, Giansanti lift Daytona Cubs, 5-1

By Sean Kernan, Daytona News-Journal

DAYTONA BEACH – Corey Black didn't have his fastball Friday night.

But the Daytona Cubs' right-hander didn't need it the way he was able to throw curveballs, sliders and changeups for strikes, whiffing eight Brevard County Manatees in five innings of a 5-1 victory at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Black, who had walked 50 in 91.2 innings leading up to Friday, walked just one. That allowed him to scatter eight hits and yield just one run.

“The walks this year have been piling up, so to only have the one walk was great,” said Black (5-8). “I didn't have my fastball, so I went to the breaking balls, and that was another good sign, being able to throw everything for a strike. The fastball was getting hit around a bit, so after the second inning I told the catcher I was going to have to rely on curveball, slider, changeup.”

The Cubs (29-18) got production from designated hitter Dustin Geiger, who belted his 14th homer of the season, and left fielder Anthony Giansanti, who knocked in two runs.

Geiger had the most dramatic moment at the plate, launching a 3-0 pitch the opposite way for a two-run homer in the third inning off losing pitcher Chad Pierce (5-6).

“I gave him the green light, and boy, did he put a great swing on it,” Daytona manager Dave Keller said. “How many times do you see a righty hit one out over there? That was impressive.”

Keller was equally impressed by Black's outing. The pitcher who was acquired last month in the Alfonso Soriano trade to the Yankees continues to lead the Florida State League in strikeouts (10.06) per nine innings.

“He threw all his breaking pitches ahead, he threw all his (breaking) pitches behind in the count and he threw them all in all different counts, so it was tough for them to sit on a pitch,” Keller said. “They are a very aggressive, especially early in the count, fastball-hitting team.”

Zach Cates added six strikeouts and Jeff Lorick one more to give Daytona's hurlers 15, matching a season high set July 20 against the Charlotte Stone Crabs.

Daytona also completed its season-high sixth straight game without an error.

The first-place Cubs now lead Lakeland by five games.
