Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

TAMPA, Fla. - Three runs in the sixth inning and a quality start from Jacob Barnes propelled the Brevard County Manatees to a 5-3 win over the Tampa Yankees on Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

With the game tied 2-2 going into the top of the sixth, Yadiel Rivera led off the inning by singling to left and then stealing second base.

Nick Ramirez then reached on a single to shortstop Cito Culver, whose throwing error allowed Ramirez to move to second and Rivera to score.

Later on in the frame with two out and runners on second and third, Greg Hopkins reached on an error by first baseman Jose Toussen, which allowed Ramirez and Nick Delmonico to score and give the Manatees (23-28 second half, 60-58 overall) a 5-2 lead.

The only two runs that Barnes would allow in his six innings of work came in the third inning. Peter O'Brien plated Taylor Dugas on a ground out to shortstop and then Jose Toussen doubled to center to score Robert Refsnyder.

Barnes (8-5, 3.21 ERA) scattered five hits and walked one, while striking out two to earn his team leading eighth win of the season. Of the seven starts that Barnes has made since the beginning of July, six of them have been quality starts.

The 'Tees scored the first run of the game in the top of the second as Hopkins drove in Mitch Haniger with a single to left.

After Tampa (22-28, 50-68) took a 2-1 lead in the third, Brevard tied the game in the fifth on a solo shot by Ben McMahan.

Ramirez, Haniger and D'Vontrey Richardson all had two hits each. In the month of August, Richardson is batting .406 (26-for-64) with eight multi-hit games.

The Manatees will open a three-game set with the Daytona Cubs on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach.

The two teams face-off at Space Coast Stadium in Viera on Saturday for game two of the series before returning back to Daytona for the series finale on Sunday.

Chad Pierce (5-5, 3.46) is scheduled to get the start for Brevard County, while Corey Black (4-8, 4.22) is slated to get the ball for the Cubs.

Rattlers keep playoff hopes alive with 15-inning victory

Reed singles in the winning run as Rattler top Peoria 5-4

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/2/0/57162520/cuts/ReedGWRBI1B816_9p5ds3xs_zcfachw4.jpg

Michael Reed heads to first after his single drives in the winning run in the bottom of the 15th inning on Thursday night for a 5-4 Wisconsin win over Peoria.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers needed a win over the Peoria Chiefs on Thursday night to keep their chances of making the Midwest League playoffs alive. It took awhile, but Michael Reed singled with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fifteenth inning to drive in the winning run for Wisconsin's 5-4 victory at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Peoria (64-55 overall, 26-26 second half) went in front in the top of the first inning. Charlie Tilson homered with one out and none on base to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin (52-65, 23-29) took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Max Walla doubled to right with two outs. Mike Garza and Victor Roache scored on the play and the Rattlers were up 2-1.

The Chiefs tied the game with a two-out rally in the fourth inning. Jeremy Schaffer tripled and Breyvic Valera drove him in with a single.

Garza put the Rattlers back in front in the bottom of the fifth inning. He doubled with two outs to drive in Orlando Arcia for a 3-2 lead.

Then, Tilson struck again with a leadoff home run in the top of the sixth.

The next runs for both teams were quirky.

Wisconsin took a 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning against Chiefs reliever Steve Sabatino. Arcia singled to start the inning. Tyrone Taylor bunted up the first base line and beat the play at first. Arcia and Taylor pulled a double steal as the throw went back to the pitcher after a pitch to Reed. Reed drew a walk to load the bases. Sabatino recovered to strike out the next two batters. But, his first pitch to Walla got by catcher Gerwuins Velazco for a passed ball that allowed Arcia to score.

Peoria had runners at first and second with two outs in the top of the eighth and Schaffer at the plate. Schaffer sent a high popup to shallow right near the foul line. The ball dropped in among three Rattlers fielders for a single. That allowed the runner from second to score to tie the game 4-4. Fortunately, the Rattlers threw Schaffer out at second base before the runner from first crossed the plate. Had they not retired Schaffer first, the run would have counted and the Chiefs would have been up by a run.

So, the game went on into the night.

The Timber Rattlers had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the thirteenth. Catcher Parker Berberet surprised everyone with a bunt single to start the inning. Alfredo Rodriguez drew a walk and Lance Roenicke took over at second base as the pinch runner for Berberet. Chris McFarland bunted the runners over and Arcia, who went 3-for-5 in the game, was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Tyrone Taylor sent a fly ball to shallow right. Roenicke tagged on the play, but Tilson's throw to the plate after the catch was on target and Roenicke was out on the inning ending double play.

And the game went on into the night.

Reliever Rodolfo Fernandez, who came on in the top of the twelfth inning, worked around a pair of two outs singles in the top of the fourteenth. In the fifteenth, Fernandez had a runners at first with two outs and made an errant throw to first base on a pickoff. That allowed the runner to get around to third base. Fernandez got out of the self-imposed jam with a fly ball to center and kept the game tied 4-4.

Rodriguez was at the plate with one out in the bottom of the fifteenth and drew a walk. He stole second and McFarland drew a walk. Ball four on the walk to McFarland just happened to get to the backstop for a wild pitch and the Rattlers had runners at the corners with one out. Peoria elected to intentionally walk Arcia a second time to load the bases for Taylor. Taylor struck out to bring Reed to the plate.

Reed wasted no time to end the contest. He singled through the middle of the diamond to knock in Rodriguez with the game winning run.

The victory knocked Peoria into a tie with the Clinton LumberKings for the second half Wild Card in the Midwest League's Western Division. The Rattlers moved to within three games of the Chiefs and the LumberKings with eighteen games remaining in the regular season.

Fernandez got the win with four innings of scoreless relief. He extended his current scoreless streak to twelve innings with his performance.

The Timber Rattlers and the Chiefs wrap their three-game series on Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Tyler Wagner (9-8, 3.25) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Brad Watson (2-5, 4.05) is scheduled to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 7:05pm.

RENO, Nev. - The Nashville Sounds converted 14 hits into seven runs Thursday night at Aces Ballpark to defeat the Reno Aces 7-3 in the series finale.

The win gives Nashville the series split and their 15th Thursday night win of the season (15-3). The Sounds finish the road trip with a 4-4 record.

Nashville strung together three runs in the second inning for the early 3-0 lead.

Catcher Robinzon Diaz, 2-for-4, doubled to lead off the frame and was followed by a walk to Stephen Parker. Shortstop Josh Prince hit a bases-clearing triple to the right-field wall and then scored on Johnny Hellweg's double to the same spot.

Sean Halton, 1-for-5, added to the Sounds lead in the fifth inning with a groundout that scored Caleb Gindl, 2-for-5, from third for the 4-0 lead. Gindl reached the hot corner on a hustle triple on a ball hit to right-center field.

With two outs in the inning, Diaz and Parker drew walks before Prince and Hellweg connected again for back-to-back RBI-singles to make it 6-0. First baseman Blake Lalli added a run in the sixth inning with his shallow single into left field.

Kentrail Davis led the offense with three hits, two doubles, while Josh Prince racked up three RBIs.

The Aces worked three runs off Hellweg in the sixth inning, after the Sounds hurler had served up five scoreless. Mike Jacobs touched Hellweg for a lead-off home run to extend his hit streak to 11 games.

A Prince fielding error allowed Juan Rivera to reach base in the frame before Josh Wilson lifted Reno's second home run of the inning to pull the Aces to within four runs. Reno never scored again.

Hellweg picked up his 11th win of the season, scattering five hits across six innings of work. The 6-foot-9 pitcher allowed three runs, two earned, walked four and struck out three before making way for reliever Brent Leach.

Leach and Kyle Heckathorn combined for three perfect frames for Nashville with two strikeouts.

Reno starter Tyler Skaggs (6-8) took the loss, allowing Nashville six runs on 10 hits and three walks over 4 2/3 innings of work.

The Sounds return to Greer Stadium Friday to begin a five-game homestand with the Round Rock Express (Rangers affiliate). Throwing for Nashville will be RHP Jimmy Nelson (3-4, 3.54) opposite Express' RHP Jake Brigham (4-3, 4.28). The first 500 fans to Greer Stadium will receive a commemorative Elvis TV Guide, courtesy of Sun Entertainment, for Elvis Night and postgame fireworks.

About the only reason I could see at this point for not calling up Heckathorn, would be that there might be so many healthy guys in September that there would be no innings. That said it is nice to get something out of a high draft pick even if it is a bullpen arm.

Brewers Walk-Off in the Tenth

By Zac Vierra / Helena Brewers

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/8/2/57159982/cuts/Jenkins_Slide_at_Home_zxha34w7_rvtgw0sy.jpg

When Renaldo Jenkins (above, photo by Seth Eikomstead) slid home with the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning on Thursday, 1,133 Brewers fans celebrated the Helena's third walk-off win of the season.

But the man who might have been happiest about the 3-2 victory over Orem was Helena third baseman Jalen Harris.

Harris made two errors in the top of seventh inning that led to a pair of Orem runs as the Owlz tied the game at two in the frame.

In the tenth, Jenkins pulled a two out single to left, stole second, and advanced to third when Ruben Ozuna reached on an infield single. He would score the winning run when a pitch by Michael Smith got through the five hole of the catcher Cambric Maye.

And just like that Harris was off the hook for his miscues.

"The team picked him up and that's what I just told him, it's a team sport," said Helena manager Tony Diggs.

It didn't take long for the Brewers to jump on Orem starter Arjenis Fernandez. With one out in the first inning, Dionis Hinojosa reached on an infield single and Fernandez walked Michael Ratterree.

Adam Giacalone would follow with a soft single to left-center that plated Hinojosa and sent Ratterree to third. Dustin Houle would then smoke the next pitch to center for a single as Ratterree scored and the Brewers took a 2-0 lead.

The Helena pitching was excellent all night. Tristan Archer got the start and tossed four shutout innings on just two hits. David Otterman and Danny Keller combined to toss the next five innings on just three hits and Estevenson Encarnacion pitched a 1-2-3 tenth before the heroics in the bottom of the inning.

"They competed and went right after guys. They made guys come out there and beat them with their best stuff. Keller comes in and gets a big out to pick up Otterman and then throws some pretty solid innings for himself and then Encarnacion comes in and picks up a win. It was a good game pitching wise," said Diggs.

The two Orem runs were scored in the seventh when Michael Fish led off the inning with a groundball that ate up Harris and Ryan Dalton followed with a grounder to third that Harris fielded cleanly, but he lost the ball on the transfer and both runners were safe on a second consecutive error.

Fish would later score on a wild pitch and Dalton would come home on a single by Cambric Moye.

But the errors would become a part of baseball history when the Brewers improved to 4-0 in extra innings with the walk-off win.

"A win is a win whether you can get it in ten or get it in nine. Hopefully you can get it in nine but hats off to them they never stopped playing," said Diggs.

The final game of the series will take place on Friday night as Helena will look for its ninth series win of the year.

Brewers still perfect in extras, take down Owlz

By Curt Synness, Helena Independent Record

With two down and none on in the bottom of the 10th inning of a tie game between the Helena Brewers and the Orem Owlz, it appeared the contest might be headed for another extra inning.

But then the Brewers got a spark of life when Renaldo Jenkins singled. After Jenkins stole second base, Ruben Ozuna — with the count at 2 and 2 — lined a hard shot at Owlz third baseman Alex Allbritton.

Allbritton had robbed Helena of a base hit the previous frame, but this time, despite a great stop, Ozuna beat the throw to first. Jenkins advanced to third on the play, and Omar Garcia stepped to the plate with the winning run just 90 feet away.

Orem reliever Michael Smith — the visitors’ fifth pitcher of the game — uncorked a wild pitch on his very first delivery to Garcia, and Jenkins raced home for a 3-2 Brewer victory.

It was the home team’s fourth extra innings game this year. They’ve won all four.

The key to the Pioneer League win was Helena’s pitching corps, as the hosts used four hurlers to limit Orem to five hits and no earned runs.

Helena moves to 31-23 overall and 8-8 in the second half of the season after the third of a four-game series versus Orem. The Owlz slide to 29-24, 9-6.

The Brewers jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first stanza on RBI singles by Adam Giacalone and Dustin Houle.

Helena pitchers Tristan Archer and David Otterman were working on a shutout until the seventh inning, when Orem tallied a pair of unearned runs to knot the score on two Helena errors and a wild pitch.

Archer, a 6-foot-3, 165-pound right hander, retired the first seven men he faced and wound up surrendering two hits in four innings, with two strikeouts and no walks.

Otterman went 2 2/3 innings, fanning four and walking three. He was replaced by Danny Keller with two outs in the sixth.

Keller is a 6-5, 190-pound righty from Agoura, Calif., with a retro windup — lifting both hands over his head and a high leg kick. He allowed just one hit in 2 1/3 frames, with a whiff and a walk.

Estevenson Encarnacion relieved in the 10th to earn the win, retiring the Owlz in order.

The Brewers banged out 14 hits on the night, led by the three-hit performances of Dionis Hinijosa and Giacalone. Garcia and Ozuna chipped in with two hits apiece.

Stars Drop Second Straight to BayBears

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

After being no-hit by a combined five pitchers one night earlier, the Huntsville Stars lost to the Mobile BayBears by a score of 10-4 on Thursday evening at Joe Davis Stadium.

To begin the game, each team traded a run in both the first and second inning.

Mobile got a sacrifice fly from shortstop Nick Ahmed and scored a run on a throwing error on a pickoff play by Stars starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann while Huntsville evened things up with a run-scoring groundout by outfielder Brock Kjeldgaard and a solo homer from shortstop Hector Gomez.

Unfortunately for the Stars, Mobile began to take control of the game in the top of the fourth inning, beginning a surge of eight unanswered runs.

After an RBI sacrifice bunt from outfielder Ender Inciarte, a three-run fifth inning sparked by an RBI single from catcher Raywilly Gomez and an RBI groundout from second baseman Mike Freeman made the score 6-2.

In the sixth inning, the first five batters reached base against Stars reliever Frankie De La Cruz and Mobile went on to score four more runs. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single from first baseman Sawyer Carroll and RBI singles from both Freeman and outfielder Keon Broxton.

The run support was plenty for BayBears starting pitcher Andrew Chafin, who improved to 10-6 on the season after giving up just two runs on six hits in five innings while striking out five batters.

In regards to offense, the only other two runs the Stars scored came with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI double by third baseman Joey Paciorek and a pinch-hit RBI single from Rene Tosoni. Paciorek paced the Huntsville offense along with first baseman Jason Rogers and catcher Anderson de la Rosa with two hits.

With the loss, Jungmann fell to 9-8 on the year by giving up six runs (five earned) in 4.1 innings pitched. The Brewers 2nd ranked prospect also walked five batters.

In game four of a five-game series on Friday, Huntsville will send RHP Ariel Pena (6-8, 4.15 ERA) to the hill while the BayBears will counter with LHP David Holmberg (5-7, 2.76 ERA).

First pitch is at 6:43 PM.
