Obscure Alumni Reference via MLB Trade Rumors:

Michael Valancius of DRaysBay asks if the Rays should have given Dane De La Rosa (MLB stats / Minor League stats) more of a chance in the big leagues before letting him go to the Angels. In 53.0 innings with the Angels, he has a 3.74 ERA with 8.0 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9.

Do you see that little one-game sliver in Helena in 2007 as De La Rosa's Brewers entirety in his linked minor league line above?

Final: DSL Brewers 1, DSL Braves 7

DSL Brewers Box Score

Pedro Peguero fell to 0-7 on the season after allowing five runs, four earned, over three innings. He allowed just two hits, but it was walks that did in a Brewers pitcher yet again, as Peguero surrendered five free passes. Rodrigo Benoit allowed a run on four hits in his one inning of work. Victor Diaz did a solid job in just his second appearance out of the bullpen, giving up just one run over the final four innings. The 19-year-old Venezuelan has been one of the Brewers better pitchers this year despite a 4-8 record.

Juan De Leon had the only multi-hit game for the Brewers, going 2-for-4. Designated Hitter Gregory Munoz had a triple in four at bats. Yeraldy Martinez doubled in four trips to the plate. Leudi Otaño was 1-for-3 with a walk. Second baseman Roosevert Chal, in just his ninth game, went 1-for-3. Chal and Daniel Leonardo each had an error, while Otaño recorded an outfield assist.

As passed along by fan in Tampa --

Mark Rogers topped out at 95 twice tonight per guns behind plate. Off speed stuff looked really good.

I just don't get why they continue to toy with this idea that somehow, Rogers is starting material and can be a 200IP guy. Let me point out the obvious: he's just not durable enough or one of those genetic freaks that just keeps taking it every 5th day. For heaven's sake, do the guy a favor. Stick him in the pen and let him be a solid, if not spectacular, 3 pitch 7th inning guy or setup man. There's no shame in that as we've seen some epically bad bullpens over the years.

Final: Mobile 2 Huntsville 0 (Combined No Hitter For Mobile)

The Huntsville Stars were on the wrong side of history Wednesday night as 5 Mobile pitchers combined to No-Hit the Stars at The Joe. Arizona Diamondbacks top prospect Archie Bradley started for the Bay Bears and worked 5 hitless innings. He was followed to the mound by Matt Gorgen, Derek Eitel, Willy Paredes, and Jake Barrett who each pitched 1 hitless inning. It was the first time the Stars have been No-Hit since the 2005 season.

The No-Hitter took away from Stars pitchers tonight as they allowed only 2 unearned runs and 7 hits. Starter Andy Moye, who had his last start cut short due to rain, came out and pitched one of his best games of the season. Moye (5-13, 4.20) pitched 6 innings, allowing 1 unearned run on 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 4. He posted a sterling 12-1 GO/FO ratio and of the 75 pitches he threw, 51 were for strikes. Despite all that, he still was saddled with the loss, his Southern League leading 13th.

The Stars got 3 innings of relief from their bullpen tonight, starting with Greg Holle. Holle worked the 7th and allowed an unearned run on 1 hit and 1 walk. Righty Micah Owings worked a scoreless 8th allowing a hit and striking out 2. Owings has now pitched 3 innings for the Stars and has recorded 7 strikeouts of the 9 outs he's recorded. Coincidentally, Owings has been to the plate 9 times as a hitter and struck out 7 times. Weird. Finally, Casey Medlen worked the 9th, allowing a hit.

Huntsville Box Score

Offensively, there isn't much that can be said. The Stars were no hit. The Bay Bears made a couple of diving plays to take away hits, which usually happens in No-Hitters. The Stars drew 6 walks for their only baserunners. Mike Walker drew 2 and Chadwin Stang, Jason Rogers, Hector Gomez, and pitcher Andy Moye each walked once. The No-Hitter also ended Rogers' hitting streak at 6 games.

Huntsville Play By Play

Huntsville (23-28 second half, 52-67 overall) will look to bounce back tomorrow night as they take on the Bay Bears in game 3 of this 5 game series. Righty Taylor Jungmann (9-7, 3.72) looks like he would be the probable starter for the Stars. Game time is set for 6:43 Central with the Voice of the Stars, Alex Cohen starting things off at 6:30 with the pre game show.

TAMPA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-3 win over the Tampa Yankees on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Brevard County (22-28 second half, 59-58 overall) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one and a half innings and never looked back as they racked up 12 hits on the night.

The Manatees scored four runs right out of the gate with Nick Delmonico driving in three of them with a one-out double to right. Delmonico would later score on a wild pitch.

The second inning saw two-out RBIs from both Mitch Haniger and Greg Hopkins as Haniger drove in D'Vontrey Richardson with a single to left and Hopkins drew a bases loaded walk. Both Richardson and Yadiel Rivera went 3-for-5 on the night.

Tampa (22-27, 50-67) starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell lasted just 1.2 innings as he allowed six hits, walked four and uncorked two wild pitches.

For the Manatees, Mark Rogers (0-0, 4.91) was on the mound for his third Major League rehab start and he went 2.2 innings and yielded three hits, while striking out four. The only run the Rogers allowed was on a wild pitch that allowed Cito Culver to score with two outs in the second.

Taylor Mangum came on in relief of Rogers and went 4.1 innings and allowed two-run homer to Matt Snyder in the bottom of the sixth as the Yankees cut the lead in half.

Those were the only runs that Mangum allowed as he gave up just three hits and walked one, while striking out two.

Peoria's 11th inning homer beats Wisconsin

Rattlers fall farther behind Chiefs in Wild Card race

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Bruce Caldwell picked a great time to hit his first Midwest League home run. The Peoria Chiefs second baseman hit a two-run home run in the top of the eleventh inning. That long ball broke a 1-1 tie and led the way to Peoria's 3-1 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Wednesday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The loss dropped Wisconsin to four games off the pace set by the Chiefs for the second half Western Division Wild Card.

Jeremy Schaffer put the Chiefs (64-54 overall, 26-25 second half) in front with a leadoff home run in the top of the second inning.

Peoria threatened to expand their lead in the third inning as they loaded the bases with one out on a walk and a pair of infield singles. Rattlers starting pitcher Preston Gainey escaped the game by getting an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Wisconsin (51-65, 22-29) tied the game with a solo home run of their own. Orlando Arcia drilled a ball over the wall in left-center for his third home run of the year with one out in the fifth inning.

Both teams had base runners, but neither starting pitcher buckled after the game was tied. Gainey used a pair of double plays and struck out seven over six innings to hold the Chiefs to one run. The seven strikeouts was a new single game high as a professional for Gainey. Chris Perry scattered eight hits over 6-2/3 innings to hold Wisconsin to a run.

The Rattlers had chance against Perry in the bottom of the sixth inning. Max Walla singled up the middle of the diamond. Chiefs shortstop Juan Herrera fielded the ball in short center, whirled, and threw wildly to first. Walla went for second base, but the ball caromed off the railing right to Perry in fair territory halfway up the first base line. Perry fired to second with third baseman Breyvic Valera covering the base and Walla was out. The next two Rattlers - Parker Berberet and Alfredo Rodriguez singled - to put runners at first and second with two outs and Tyler Roberts at the plate. The first pitch to Roberts got away from catcher Gerwuins Velazco. Both runners tried to move up a base. Velazco took the trail runner and threw out Rodriguez at second for the final out of the inning.

The Chiefs put two runners on with one out against reliever Ryan Gibbard in the top of the seventh, but Gibbard for Ildemaro Vargas to ground into an inning ending 3-6-1 double play.

Charlie Tilson dropped a bunt single to start the top of the eleventh inning. Caldwell, who was playing in his twelfth game of the season with the Chiefs, stepped to the plate and ran the count to 3-2. The lefty sent a fly ball to the left of the batter's eye in center field. Wisconsin outfielder Tyrone Taylor went back to the wall and leapt, but the ball carried into the Peoria bullpen for a two-run home run and a 3-1 lead.

Dixon Llorens, who worked a 1-2-3 tenth, struck out the side in order in the bottom of the eleventh inning to pick up his third win of the season.

Wednesday was the fifth time a game between the Timber Rattlers and Chiefs has gone to extra innings in 2013. Wisconsin is 1-4 in extra innings against Peoria this season.

The loss dropped the Timber Rattlers four games behind the Chiefs in the second half Western Division Wild Card Race. Peoria stays two games in front of the Clinton LumberKings, who beat Quad Cities 9-7 at home on Wednesday night. There are 19 games left in the regular season.

Game two of the series is Thursday night. Eric Semmelhack (2-6, 5.02) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Silfredo Garcia (3-4, 4.21) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 7:05pm.

Thursday night is Hardee's Night and Hardee's will have fun, coupons, and surprises for the whole family. The Community Blood Center will be on hand to let fans know how they can Step Up to the Plate and Donate. Fans can also enjoy 16oz soda, beer, or Arty's Old Fashioned drinks for just $2 as part of Thirsty Thursday presented by Arty's Old Fashioned and 95.9 KISS FM.

If you can't make it out to the stadium, you may catch the action in other ways. Time Warner Cable SportsChannel has the television broadcast starting at 7:00pm. The radio broadcast may be heard on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. Subscribers to MiLB.TV may also see the game.

Laffey, Sounds Defeat Aces, 8-1

Nashville Sounds

Aaron Laffey, archive photo (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

RENO, Nev. - The Nashville Sounds defeated the host Reno Aces by an 8-1 count on Wednesday evening at Aces Ballpark.

Left-hander Aaron Laffey (6-6) earned his second win with Nashville by hurling his second quality start for the club, holding the Aces to one run on seven hits over six strong innings of action.

Every starting Sounds position player recorded a knock in the contest, led by two-hit efforts from Kentrail Davis, Caleb Gindl, and Robinzon Diaz.

The Sounds grabbed a 1-0 first-inning lead with an unearned run against Charles Brewer. Davis (2-for-4, three runs) led off the contest with a single and later scored from second with two outs when Brewer uncorked a wild pitch and catcher Ed Easley misfired to third on the play.

Davis singled and scored again for Nashville in the third to double the Sounds' lead to 2-0. Eugenio Velez followed Davis with a grounder to second and Tyler Bortnick threw high to the bag on the force attempt to allow both runners to reach base. After Davis hustled to third on a flyout, he trotted home in unearned fashion on Sean Halton's groundout to second.

The Sounds made it a 6-0 contest in the fourth with four more scores against Brewer. Stephen Parker led off with a double, moved to third on a Josh Prince single, and scored on Laffey's well-executed squeeze bunt. Two batters later, the red-hot Velez smacked a two-run single to center then stole second and scored the final run of the frame on Halton's two-out single up the middle.

Brewer (5-10) drew the loss for Reno after being touched for six runs on eight hits over four-plus innings of work.

Reno got onto the scoreboard in the home half of the fourth when Brad Snyder scored on a Laffey wild pitch. Gindl kept the Aces to a sole run when the left fielder handled a Alfredo Marte foul fly and threw out Easley at the dish with a strong one-hop throw to end the inning with a double play.

The Sounds continue their scoring in the eighth against Aces reliever Nate Adcock. Davis, who reached base three times on the night, drew a walk and later came plateward on a two-out single to right by Gindl, who went 2-for-5 in his first game back with Nashville.

Nashville tacked on one final run in the ninth as pinch-hitter extraordinaire Hainley Statia delivered an opposite-field RBI knock to left off Chase Anderson. Statia is hitting .450 (9-for-20) off the bench this season.

The Aces didn't produce a baserunner over the final three frames against the Sounds' bullpen. Jesus Sanchez followed Laffey with two hitless innings of relief before Dustin Molleken wrapped up the victory with a perfect ninth in his second appearance for the Sounds.

The Sounds will look to gain a series split when the clubs wrap up the four-game set with a 9:05 p.m. CT finale on Thursday night. It will be a battle of pitching prospects as right-hander Johnny Hellweg (10-5, 2.75), the PCL's ERA leader, will man the bump for the Sounds and face Reno left-hander Tyler Skaggs (6-7, 4.12).

Bradley, Mobile no-hit Huntsville

Top D-backs prospect starts five-pitcher feat for BayBears

By Jake Seiner / MiLB.com

When Archie Bradley finally returned to the Mobile dugout in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday, he was struck by its eerie silence.

"It was pretty quiet," the top D-backs prospect said. "Kind of the calm before the storm."

The right-hander had been in the clubhouse doing his usual post-start arm maintenance after throwing five hitless innings. He returned in time to see Jake Barrett snap the silence with a perfect inning to seal the first no-hitter in Double-A BayBears history. Bradley, Matt Gorgen, Derek Eitel, Willy Paredes and Barrett combined on the feat in a 2-0 victory over the Huntsville Stars.

The no-no was the second in eight days in the Southern League. Tennessee's Eric Jokisch no-hit Jacksonville on Aug. 6.

Bradley struck out seven and walked five while tossing 51 of his 98 pitches for strikes over his outing. The No. 7 prospect on MLB.com's Top 100 list improved to 9-5, dropping his ERA to 2.00. The right-hander has allowed two or fewer earned runs in five consecutive starts.

The only flaw in Bradley's effort was the walk total. On July 27, the right-hander walked seven Birmingham batters while completing five two-run innings, but he had issued just one walk in 16 innings over two starts since.

"I thought I threw the ball well overall," he said. "Any time you don't give up any runs or hits, that's obviously good. I struggled with my command a little bit.

"That's where I think my maturity and my mental side of the game picked me up. I was struggling with my command, but I was able to stay sharp and pitch out of jams."

He showed off that mental aptitude in the first inning, when he walked two but evaded the jam by getting Rene Tosoni to pop out and then striking out Brock Kjeldgaard looking.

"Those two guys are good hitters with good numbers," Bradley said. "Obviously, when you're command is a little off, you just have to step off the mound and compose yourself. [Catcher Rossmel Perez] came out to talk and settle me down, and then I made the pitches to get out of the jam."

The strikeout was the first of three by Kjeldgaard, including a final punchout when Barrett retired the left fielder after a mound visit from Perez to end the game.

Barrett began the at-bat by working a 1-2 count, but then threw consecutive balls to work a full count. The 2-2 pitch was a slider that missed, and as soon as he missed it, Barrett figured he'd get a visit from Perez.

The 23-year-old catcher jogged out, but the right-hander didn't let him say much.

"As soon as we got to two outs, I knew the no-hitter was on the line and I was just thinking about striking the guy out with my best strikeout pitch," Barrett said. "Once it was 1-2, I was just thinking, 'Throw a nasty slider.'

"That's all I was thinking about. [Perez] came out to me, asked me what I wanted to throw, and I told him right away that I wanted to throw a slider. ... As soon as I saw him, I told him, 'Yeah, I'm throwing the slider.'"

The 22-year-old froze Kjeldgaard with the 3-2 breaking ball, and home-plate umpire Alex Ransom rang up strike three.

"As soon as we got the last guy out, everybody rushed to the mound, all came out and were real happy," Barrett said. "It was a great feeling shaking hands with the other pitchers."

The save was Barrett's 10th in 17 appearances this season and lowered his ERA to 0.51.

Gorgen logged a perfect sixth that included strikeouts of Jason Rogers and Tosoni.

Eitel replaced Gorgen for the seventh, and Kjeldgaard was his first test. The Huntsville slugger put good wood on a pitch and drove it deep -- but into the wind -- toward left field. Mobile left fielder Justin Greene tracked the high fly down at the warning track and reeled it in for the first out.

After walking Mike Walker, Eitel then struck out Anderson De La Rosa and Hector Gomez swinging to end the seventh.

Paredes tossed a scoreless eighth and Barrett entered the game. Rogers led off, driving a fly ball well into center but within the range of Ender Inciarte. Tosoni then shot a line drive to left, but Justin Greene got a bead on the ball and made a running grab for the second out. Barrett then struck out Kjeldgaard to end the game.
