Final: Tampa 7, Brevard County 3

Resilient Manatees fall short again, 7-3, in Tampa

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

TAMPA, Fla. - Another late-inning comeback attempt came up short, with the Brevard County Manatees leaving the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning in a 7-3 loss at to the Tampa Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Tuesday night.

A hit by pitch, an error and a walk loaded up the bases for leadoff man D'Vontrey Richardson, but when he crushed the ball to left-center field it was Mason Williams who made a highlight-reel diving catch on the warning track to end the game.

Though the Manatees (21-28 second half, 58-58 overall) only had four hits in the game, the first three were triples. It was the first time this season that Brevard County had a trio of three-baggers.

D'Vontrey Richardson sped around for his first triple of the year in the fourth inning, scoring on Mitch Haniger's bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

At the time, that run tied the game at 1-1 after Tampa (22-26, 50-66) had scored in the bottom of the first inning on a leadoff single by Mason Williams and Rob Refsnyder's RBI triple.

Tampa wasted no time retaking the lead in the bottom of the fourth, using a walk, a double and a fielder's choice to take a 2-1 lead. Matt Snyder's second homer of the season was a two-run shot in the fifth that extended the Yankees' lead to 4-1.

The Manatees fought back as Richardson opened the sixth by reaching on an error, the first of two committed by the Tampa defense. Two batters later, Nick Ramirez hit his third career triple - all of which have come this season - to drive in the first run of the inning.

Then Mitch Haniger's bid for a home run in the next at-bat fell just shy of the left-center field wall. He sped around for his third three-bagger of the year, but would be stranded on third.

The 4-3 lead that Tampa had going into the bottom of the sixth would have been enough, but against Manatees reliever Dan Meadows they were able to add three more runs. Meadows gave up back-to-back singles, then walked a batter to load the bases.

One of Brevard County's four errors on the evening allowed a run to score and put Mason Williams on base, which kept the bases loaded. Refsnyder's sacrifice fly would score Jeff Farnham from third.

When Williams stole second with Ben Gamel batting, the throw down to second sailed in to center field and allowed Jose Toussen to walk home. Williams also advanced to third on the play and after walking both Gamel and Peter O'Brien, Meadows was able to escape the inning with the bases left loaded.

Brevard County starting pitcher Brent Suter (7-8, 3.31 ERA) was hit with the loss, though two of the four runs he was charged with were unearned. Suter surrendered seven hits and walked two men, but recorded five strikeouts in his five innings of work.

After Meadows, Santo Manzanillo finished the final two innings of the game by allowing only one hit with a strikeout.

Tampa hurler Scottie Allen turned in another quality start, his 12th of the year, as he gave up three runs in six innings of work. Just two of his runs were earned, as he held the Manatees to three hits - all triples - with one walk and four strikeouts.

Brevard County will look to snap a four-game losing streak when they take on the Yankees in Tampa again on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. Jacob Barnes (7-5, 3.22) will start for the 'Tees against Bryan Mitchell (4-10, 4.75) of the Yankees.

Final: Huntsville 4 Mobile 3

The Stars scored 2 runs in the 7th to defeat the Mobile Bay Bears 4-3 Tuesday night at The Joe. Third baseman Mike Walker again had a clutch hit, this time a 2 out, 2 run triple in the 7th to lift the Stars to victory. Huntsville got good pitching again tonight, beginning with starter Drew Gagnon. Gagnon, who was coming off his best AA performance last time out, worked 6 innings tonight, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks while striking out 4. He was credited with giving up 2 home runs, but the 2nd home run was seen as foul by everyone but the umpire staff. It took Gagnon 87 pitches, 45 strikes, to cover 6 innings and he put up a 5-3 GO/FO ratio.

With Gagnon working 6, the Stars needed 3 innings from their bullpen. Eric Marzec (5-0, 2.17) gave them 1 scoreless inning. He worked the 7th and allowed no runs on 1 hit, earning the win. Righty David Goforth worked the 8th and 9th scoreless and picked up his 2nd save on the season. Goforth allowed 2 hits but struck out 3 over his 2 innings of work.

Huntsville Box Score

The Stars were held to only 7 hits tonight, but made the most out of them, scoring 4 runs. They were led by Jason Rogers, who was on base 3 times tonight. Rogers went 2-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored. Jason now has a 6 game hitting streak going and is 9-17 (.529) over those 6 games. Second baseman Nick Shaw was the only other Stars hitter with more than one hit. Shaw went 2-4 and scored once. Mike Walker had the big blow, the 2 out, 2 run triple to give the Stars the winning margin. He also drew a walk. Right fielder Rene Tosoni was 1-2 with an RBI prior to being ejected. His replacement, Eric Patterson, had 2 plate appearances and walked both times, scoring once. The Stars only other hit came from shortstop Hector Gomez. Gomez has now hit safely in 7 of his last 10 games.

Quality win!

AZL Brewers Box Score

Clint Coulter was behind the plate, not DH'ing, here, and hit his 3rd Maryvale HR, his 6th overall in 192 AB's split between Wisconsin, Helena, and Maryvale. Coulter also exited after grounding out to end the 5th. Outfielders Johnny Davis and Brandon Diaz each had two singles at the top of the A-Crew order.

Really nice devlelopment year for 2012 9th round RHP Alex Lavandero, now a year-plus removed from a Miami high school. It's a process. Congrats Alex, on your 1st pro win! Behind Lavandero's five innings of work, 5th round RHP Josh Uhen tossed two perfect innings and 34th round RHP Dylan Brock made his 1st appearance since July 28th, a scoreless frame. Congrats as well to undrafted RHP Tyler Spurlin on his 1st pro save! It's an exclamation mark kind of post here tonight.

Yup, that Steve Garrison. The 2005 10th round Brewer draft pick LHP, who has one big league game with the Yankees in 2011 under his belt, will be 27 in September. He's toiled for three other organizations, mostly at AA, the last two seasons.

Stars Win Series Opener, Third Straight Game

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

To begin a five-game set and 11-game homestand at Joe Davis Stadium, the Huntsville Stars held on to beat the Mobile BayBears by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday night.

After finishing off their series against the Chattanooga Lookouts with two straight wins, the Stars got off to the right track against BayBears starting pitcher Bradin Hagens in the bottom of the third inning.

With two outs, outfielder Chadwin Stang was hit by a pitch by Hagens and then stole second on the very next pitch. During that same at-bat, an infield single from second baseman Nick Shaw accompanied by a BayBears throwing error allowed Stang to score. Later in the inning, an RBI single from outfielder Rene Tosoni scored Shaw to make the score 2-0.

The Stars would hold that lead until the top of the fifth inning, where Stars starting pitcher Drew Gagnon got hurt by the longball. One out into the inning, outfielder Keon Broxton put the BayBears on the board with a solo homer. Then, after Hagens drew a walk against Gagnon, outfielder Ender Inciarte roped a two-run homer just inside the right-field foul pole to put Mobile up by one run.

Fortunately for Gagnon, he was taken out of harms way for the loss in the bottom of the seventh inning. Following a one-out single from first baseman Jason Rogers and a walk drawn by outfielder Eric Patterson, third baseman Mike Walker came through with a two-run triple off of BayBears righty Bryan Woodall to put Huntsville on top for good.

For Walker, the game-winning hit was his second in the last three days.

To ensure the victory, righty David Goforth notched his second save of the season with two innings of scoreless baseball. Goforth stranded runners on first and third in the ninth inning.

Aside from Goforth, righty Eric Marzec improved to 5-0 on the year with the win in relief while Gangon gave up three runs in six innings with four strikeouts for a quality start in a no-decision.

On offense, the Stars were paced by two hits apiece from Shaw and Rogers.

The win for Huntsville was their third in a row. Four of the Stars last five wins have been by one run.

On Wednesday, the Stars will play game two of a five-game series with the Mobile BayBears. The BayBears are the two-time defending Southern League champs and won the Southern League South division crown in the first half this year.

Huntsville will send RHP Andy Moye (5-12, 4.43 ERA) to the hill while the BayBears will counter with RHP Archie Bradley (8-5, 2.10 ERA). Bradley is the top prospect in the Diamondbacks organization and is a consensus top-10 prospect in all of Minor League baseball.

First pitch is at 6:43 PM.

Rough Night Ends Early

Owlz rout Brewers, game called in the eighth due to rain

By Zac Vierra / Helena Brewers

It was a night the Brewers would like to forget. And thankfully due to Mother Nature it ended early. Helena allowed 11 runs on 16 hits and committed four errors, and mustered only four hits in a rain-shortened 11-1 loss to Orem on Tuesday.

The Owlz would take the lead in the second inning off Zach Quintana. With one out, Kody Eaves reached on an infield single. Michael Fish would follow by pulling a rocket down the third base line and when the ball rolled all the way to the wall, Eaves came around to score to give Orem the 1-0 advantage.

It wouldn't take long for Helena to get the run back as Adam Giacalone took the first pitch he saw from Garrett Nuss deep for his third home run of the season. That would be the only run the Brewers would get all night.

Orem would quickly regain the lead in the top of the third as they loaded the bases with no outs and Brandon Bayardi pulled a single to left to plate Mark Shannon.

Alex Allbritton would follow by hitting a blooper down the right field line that was just out of the reach of the dive of Michael Ratterree as two runs scored on the double.

With two runners in scoring position the Brewers brought the infield in and it cost them a run as Eaves hit a pop up to shallow left that shortstop Angel Ortega couldn't get to as Bayardi scored on the play.

The Owlz would grab another run in the top of the fourth as Jose Rondon hit a double to left that scored Shannon who had reached earlier on an error.

Quintana would be pulled with two outs and runners on the corners and Allbritton would greet Ryan Fasano to the game with a frozen rope to left-center that scored a pair.

Orem would make it 9-1 when Fish pulled a homer to left to lead off the fifth.

The Owlz would pick up a pair of runs in the eighth on a RBI double by Eaves and a RBI single by Fish and shortly after the players were called off the field due to lightning.

A few minutes later the skies would open up and after a delay of an hour and four minutes, the game was called.

Nuss picked up his first pro win after limiting the Brewers to one run on three hits in five innings. Quintana got his third loss after surrendering seven earned runs on ten hits.

Fish went 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBI and Allbritton had a pair of hits and four runs batted in to boost the Owlz.

The Brewers will look to rebound on Wednesday night in the second game of series. First pitch is at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Sounds Blown Out By Aces, 14-3

Nashville's Sean Halton Hits Three-Run Bomb In Loss

Nashville Sounds

AUDIO: Sean Halton's 3-Run Jack

RENO, Nev. - The Nashville Sounds were no match for the Reno Aces Tuesday night at Aces Ballpark, and gave up a season-high 14 runs in the 14-3 loss.

Trailing 3-2 in the sixth, the Aces batted around to hang six runs on the Sounds. In his first at-bat for Reno, Jake Fox lifted a pinch-hit single into centerfield off of reliever Tim Dillard to give the Aces a one-run lead. Both of the scoring runners reached base off of Zach Kroenke (5-14), who began the inning.

Dillard was touched for an infield bunt single and offered a walk to Tyler Bortnick to load the bases for Reno. Catcher Ed Easley cashed in with a bases-clearing three-run double that dropped just between two charging outfielders.

Easley scored on the following single by Mike Jacobs before Dillard closed out the inning. The side-armed pitcher allowed four runs on four hits and one walk.

Reno initially cut into the Sounds' lead in the fourth inning, with the bases loaded, when shortstop Josh Wilson drove a two-run base-hit to left field off Kroenke, who allowed a total of four runs on the night to be charged his 14th loss.

Sounds outfielder Sean Halton, 2-for-3, got Nashville on the board in the first inning with a three-run home run to left-center field. The jack, Halton's 11th of the year, scored Kentrail Davis, 2-for-3, and Eugenio Velez, 3-for-5, whom both reached base on singles to lead off the frame.

Right-hander R.J. Seidel made the start for Nashville, following 15 days of rest, and delivered two scoreless innings. He allowed two hits to start the game, but retired the side in the first inning to work out of a bases-loaded jam. After a 1-2-3 second inning and 34 total pitches, Seidel called it a night, giving way to Zach Kroenke.

Reliever Travis Webb pitched a scoreless seventh inning for Nashville, but Michael Olmsted was unable to follow suit in the eighth, letting the Aces bat around for the second time and plate six runs on four hits and three walks. It is the first time in nine appearances that Olmsted has allowed a run. Brent Leach recorded the inning's final two outs.

Pitcher Michael Bolsinger (5-5) picked up the win for Reno, allowing three runs on six hits and five walks over six innings of work. The right-hander fanned nine Sounds en route to his fifth victory of the season.

The Sounds play game three of four against Reno Wednesday night at Aces Ballpark. Throwing for Nashville will be LHP Aaron Laffey (5-6, 5.81) opposite the Aces RHP Charles Brewer (5-9, 5.15).

The Brewers must know they're going to either add RHP R.J. Seidel to the 40-man this fall or know that he'll sign on for another minor league contract year. Seidel is set to become a minor league free agent, but the Brewers are limiting his innings.

***

Boy when Michael Olmsted blows up, he really blows up. Not sure, but I believe if the Brewers tried to sneak him through waivers and remove him from the 40-man (they don't have to now, but could), then I believe the Brewers would still own his rights for another year before he could become a minor league free agent (time in Japan count as service years?). Otherwise, they could be patient with Olmsted, as he still has two option years left. But that 40-man spot looks vulnerable.
