More D'vo goodness already. I did a quick calculation and check after his first AB double. His OPS with that double included would rank him 8th in the league if he had enough PAs to qualify. Even moreso given that Brevard might be the biggest pitcher's park in the league

Manatees starting pitcher Tyler Cravy, seen here in a game from earlier this season, allowed one run in six innings of work and recorded a season-high eight strikeouts, but was saddled with the loss as Brevard County was defeated 1-0 by the Dunedin Blue Jays on Monday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin. DUNEDIN, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees were edged 1-0 by the Dunedin Blue Jays on Monday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium as the Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep of the Manatees.

Brevard County (21-27 second half, 58-57 overall) starting pitcher Tyler Cravy (3-2, 2.24), despite allowing just one run over six innings of work, was saddled with his second loss in his seventh start of the year. He allowed four hits and a walk while striking out a season-high eight batters. Cravy lowered his ERA as a starter to 1.42, compared to a 3.26 ERA as a reliever.

Dunedin (19-27, 56-57) scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the second inning. Gustavo Pierre, who hit for the cycle in the first game of the series, led off the inning with a double off of the top of the left field wall. Pierre advanced to third base on a ground out and then scored on a Derrick Chung sacrifice fly to right field.

Stephen Peterson replaced Cravy on the mound in the seventh inning. Peterson worked two scoreless innings, including the eighth which saw Yadiel Rivera throw out Matt Newman at home, who was attempting to score from third on a ground ball.

John Anderson made his third spot start of the season for Dunedin. He surrendered a hit and walked two men over three innings of work.

Shawn Griffith was the first man out of the bullpen for the Blue Jays and pitched three scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit, struck out three and earned the win.

Justin Jackson followed Griffith and threw two scoreless innings before Ajay Meyer entered in the top of the ninth inning for Dunedin.

The Manatees tried to get a rally going as Nicky Delmonico singled with one out in the ninth, but he was picked off of first by catcher Derrick Chung. Cameron Garfield and Greg Hopkins both singled with two outs, but Ben McMahan struck out to end the contest.

Garfield, Hopkins and D'Vontrey Richardson each recorded a pair of hits for the 'Tees. Nick Ramirez saw his hitting streak end at 14 games.

Brevard County's road trip continues as they open a three-game set with the Tampa Yankees (21-26, 49-66) at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. Brent Suter (7-7, 3.30 ERA) is scheduled to start for Brevard County. He will be opposed by Tampa's Scottie Allen (8-5, 3.57 ERA).

Final: @Billings 4, Helena 2

Helena box score

Another seemingly contradictory outing for sinkerballer Barrett Astin, who again recorded plenty of groundouts while also allowing a homer. Astin was charged with three runs in five innings, striking out four and walking one. Helena managed just five hits, though one was a homer by Michael Ratterree, who entered the day third in the league in OPS. Ratterree also threw out a runner at home for kicks. Taylor Brennan tripled and walked but also committed two errors.

Rattlers rebound with 9-1 victory

Offense gets 15 hits as Ross goes six strong innings

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Austin Ross tossed six shutout innings and allowed one hit in Wisconsin's 9-1 win at Quad Cities on Monday night.

DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers needed a win on Monday night at Modern Woodmen Park to keep their chances at a return to the Midwest League playoffs realistic. They were facing the Quad Cities River Bandits and Mark Appel, the #1 overall pick in the 2013 draft. Wisconsin responded with a 9-1 victory to back up six strong innings from Austin Ross.

Alfredo Rodriguez started the Timber Rattlers offense in the third inning with a leadoff double to center. It was the first of four hits for Rodriguez on the night. Tyler Roberts followed with a sharp single to center to put runners on the corners. Orlando Arcia grounded into a force play at second to retire Roberts, but Rodriguez scored on the play for the 1-0 lead. Tyrone Taylor followed with a single to put runners on the corners again. Michael Reed drove in Arcia for a 2-0 advantage.

Wisconsin (51-64 overall, 22-28 second half) added to their lead by getting aggressive against Appel in the top of the fourth inning. Max Walla doubled to right-center on the first pitch of the inning. Parker Berberet followed with a single on the second pitch of the inning to put runners on the corners. Rodriguez knocked in Walla with the an RBI single on the third pitch of the inning. The single by Rodriguez sent Berberet around to third base. Roberts waited three whole pitches into his at bat before sending a fly ball to right that was deep enough to score Berberet for a 4-0 lead.

Arcia cracked the first pitch of his fourth inning at bat to right on a hit-and-run to get Rodriguez around to third base. Then, Tyrone Taylor cracked the first pitch of his at bat down the third base line for a two-run double and a 6-0 lead. That double by Taylor knocked Appel out of the game.

Mitchell Lambson took over on the hill and get the second out, but Mike Garza drove in the final run of the inning with a single. The Rattlers were comfortably in front 7-0.

Ross tossed six innings in his longest start since he underwent Tommy John surgery on May 10, 2012. Ross walked one and struck out four. The only hit he allowed was a one out single in the sixth.

Taylor extended the lead to 8-0 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning.

Quad Cities (68-50, 30-19) got their only run of the game on an RBI double by Austin Elkins in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Chris Razo.

The Rattlers added a final run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Berberet.

The victory gave Wisconsin a series win at Modern Woodmen Park as they took two of three from the River Bandits. The series win marked the first road series win for the Rattlers in the second half of the season. They had been 0-6-1 until this series with the River Bandits.

Wisconsin's offense collected 15 hits in the game and kept their playoff hopes alive. Peoria, the current leaders in the second half Western Division Wild Card leaders, lost at Clinton on Monday night. The Rattlers are within three games of the Chiefs with 20 games remaining in the regular season.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday. They return to action on Wednesday night at home to start a brief three-game series with Peoria, the team they are trying to catch in the standings. Preston Gainey (4-7, 5.90) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Chris Perry (2-1, 2.64) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 7:05pm.

Wednesday night is a WIXX Bang for Your Buck Night and Thrivent Financial Night. Bang for Your Buck with WIXX means $1 Cher-Make hot dogs, $1 Pepsi Products, and $1 Miller Beers! Thrivent Financial Night features a special Wednesday night fireworks display after the game presented by Thrivent Financial.

If you can't make it to the ballpark, there are several ways to catch the action. The television broadcast is on My NEW32's Sports Showdown starting with the pregame show at 6:30pm. The radio call may be heard on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. Subscribers to MiLB.TV may watch the game on their computers.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Alfredo Rodriguez have a game! Mehring loving refers to him as "Fredo" and Fredo went 4-5 with 2B and scored 3 runs, he now has a 10 game hitting streak.

I'm not a Mark Appel fan so Austin Ross' performance coupled with the offensive explosion attacking 1st pitch FBs made my night. Ross had his best performance of the season, allowing 1 hit and walk against 4 SOs over 6 scoreless innings. Chris Razo was a bit uneven, as he has been since being called up but Taylor Wall was excellent as usual.

In addition to Rodriguez' night Tyrone Taylor (2-4,2B), Michael Reed (2-5), Michael Garza (2-5), and Parker Berberet (2-5) all had multi-hit games. Max Walla doubled for his only hit of the game and every Rattler batter managed at least 1 hit in the game.

Wisconsin Recap

These half innings were quite fun, Arcia is a very heads up player despite his occasional ill advised throws which lead to errors. He snags more extra bases than any player I recall coming through WI.

Strong-armed Ross outduels Appel

Brewers righty allows one hit in six innings to earn first victory

By Brandon Simes / MiLB.com

Finally all the way back after 13 months of rehab from Tommy John surgery, Austin Ross showed Monday night that his "rubber arm" seems to be as strong as ever.

The right-handed Brewers prospect allowed one hit and struck out four in a season-high six shutout innings to earn the win and outduel 2013 No. 1 overall pick Mark Appel in Class A Wisconsin's 9-1 rout of Quad Cities at Modern Woodmen Park.

"After the first couple innings, it was good. I was throwing strikes kind of a little up in the zone and off. But by the third inning, I fell into a good rhythm, keeping the fastball down, pitching to both sides and then my breaking ball started going well. Getting ahead of hitters obviously opens up a lot of the plate," Ross said.

Ross (1-0) retired the first 11 batters he faced before walking top Astros prospect Carlos Correa. The 6-foot-2 right-hander quickly got a ground ball to end the fourth inning and didn't give up another base runner until Austin Elkins singled with one out in the sixth. A groundout back to the mound and a strikeout ended Ross' best outing of the year.

"I knew [my pitch count] was low. Once I got through the fifth, I thought they'll probably let me go back out because I hadn't given up a hit," he said. "Obviously I'm not going to go throw the whole game with this injury, but I wanted to get through six or seven or whatever they'd let me go. I was throwing a fastball inside and let the ball drift a little over the plate too much. [Elkins] did a good job and hit it into right field."

Ross had success during his first stint in Wisconsin, going 6-3 with a 3.25 ERA in 2011. During the second half of the year, he earned a trip to pitch for Brevard County in the Class A Advanced Florida State League, where he went 4-4 with a 7.49 ERA. He started 2012 back with the Manatees and had a 1.54 ERA with nine strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings when his pitching elbow popped.

"Honestly, I tore it on one pitch. I kind of felt a little something, it didn't really even hurt, it was just a little pinch, a bump on the inside on the elbow," he said. "You hear stories about enormous amounts of pain, swelling up, but everyone reacts differently. For some it doesn't even hurt, for some it hurts a lot."

The LSU product said the injury came as a total surprise given his rubber-arm history.

"I never missed a day of playing catch in my life, never had a day in high school, college or in the pros where I felt a little soreness and needed to take a day off from playing catch or just take a light day of throwing," he said. "Just one pitch and I tore it. Obviously it had been breaking down over time. It just got to the point where it couldn't hold it anymore."

The road back from surgery tested Ross' patience, but the 2010 eighth-round pick is gaining momentum. He has allowed one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts over 13 innings in his last three starts.

"It feels unbelievable [to be back]. My velocity's back to where it was, my stuff's where it was. The past couple weeks, it's all fallen together for me. Before that I would show flashes for an inning or two and then go back for an inning and it wouldn't be there, there were peaks and valleys. Finally a couple weeks ago, I felt like I could put it together for a whole game," Ross said.

Alfredo Rodriguez led the way offensively for Wisconsin, going 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Leadoff man Tyrone Taylor, Milwaukee's No. 4 prospect, doubled, singled and drove in three runs.

Appel (1-1) gave up seven runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings to take his first professional loss.
