Single runs in the 1st and 2nd innings were enough to carry Helena to victory. Jose Pena went deep for the 5th time this year, and Angel Ortega had three hits. Omar Garcia was on twice with a hit and a HBP and stole two bases, to give him an even 20 for the season.

Eduard Reyes turned in a decent quasi-start, pitching the 2nd through 6th innings and allowing just the one run. Tyler Alexander picked up his first save.

Final: Huntsville 4 Chattanooga 0

Four Huntsville pitchers combined to throw the Stars 7th shutout of the season, a 4-0 whitewashing of the Chattanooga Lookouts Sunday Afternoon. It was the Stars first blanking since July 18th against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. The Stars got 5 scoreless innings from starter Ariel Pena. Pena (6-8, 4.15) has been struggling as of late. Today, he allowed only 4 hits but walked 5 while striking out 4. Walks have been an issue all season for Pena. His 72 issued lead the Southern League. Pena threw 85 pitches, 46 for strikes and posted a nice 6-1 GO/FO ratio. The win today was the first for Pena since May 29th.

Brooks Hall was first out of the bullpen today. Hall, normally a starter, was skipped in the rotation this time around to work on his innings limit. Hall went 2 innings today, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out 1. He also had a 4-0 GO/FO ratio. Next, Casey Medlen pitched a scoreless 8th. He allowed a hit and walked 1 while striking out 1. Hard throwing righty Kevin Shackelford pitched the 9th. He allowed a hit while striking out 1.

Huntsville Box Score

Huntsville was able to parlay 11 hits, 4 walks, and a hit batter into only 4 runs Sunday afternoon, but it was enough. Jason Rogers again was a monster at the plate. Bones went 2-3, both hits doubles, drove in 1 and walked twice. The RBI was Rogers' league leading 79th. He now has a 5 game hitting streak. Over those 5 games, Rogers is hitting .500 (7-14) with 2 doubles, a home run, 5 RBI's, 2 stolen bases, a sacrifice fly, and 8 walks drawn. Those sound like Player Of The Week numbers to me. He's pushed his season average up to .261.

Shortstop Hector Gomez led all Stars hitters with 3 hits today including a double. Gomez scored once and drove in one as well. Chadwin Stang contributed 2 hits and a walk along with his 7th RBI. Catcher Anderson De La Rosa continued his hot hitting since arriving from Nashville. De La Rosa went 2-5 with a double and a run scored. He's batting .350 now for the Stars. Rene Tosoni and Eric Patterson each contributed a hit today. Patterson's hit was a double. He also stole his 2nd base with the Stars. Tosoni added a walk as well.

Huntsville Play By Play

Who would have thought the run Huntsville scored in the 3rd would be the game winner?

Huntsville Top of the 3rd

Hector Gomez doubles (10) on a fly ball to left fielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez.

Ariel Pena grounds out, second baseman Rafael Ynoa to first baseman Angelo Songco. Hector Gomez to 3rd.

Chadwin Stang singles on a sharp line drive to right fielder Jon Garcia. Hector Gomez scores.

Nick Shaw grounds into a force out, shortstop Miguel Rojas to second baseman Rafael Ynoa. Chadwin Stang out at 2nd. Nick Shaw to 1st.

Rene Tosoni singles on a line drive to center fielder Joc Pederson. Nick Shaw to 2nd.

Jason Rogers walks. Nick Shaw to 3rd. Rene Tosoni to 2nd.

Mike Walker grounds into a force out, second baseman Rafael Ynoa to shortstop Miguel Rojas. Jason Rogers out at 2nd.

Huntsville (22-27 second half, 51-66 overall) has tomorrow off before returning to action Tuesday night. They will open a 5 game series with the Mobile Bay Bears at The Joe. Righty Drew Gagnon (4-6, 5.61), coming off his best performance with the Stars, will be on the hill for the Stars. Game time is set for 6:43 Central with the Voice of the Stars, Alex Cohen kicking things off at 6:28 with the pregame show.

Final: Dunedin 4, Brevard County 2

Brevard's comeback falls short in 4-2 loss to Jays

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

Manatees starting pitcher Chad Pierce, seen here in a game from earlier this season, allowed three runs and struck out six in six innings of work in Brevard County's 4-2 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays on Sunday evening at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin. DUNEDIN, Fla. - Despite sending the tying run to the plate after scoring two runs in the ninth inning, the Brevard County Manatees fell 4-2 to the Dunedin Blue Jays on Sunday evening at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

Dunedin starting pitcher Jesse Hernandez (6-10, 3.50 ERA) held Brevard County scoreless over 6.2 innings of work. He allowed just three hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

For the Manatees (21-26 second half, 58-56 overall), Chad Pierce (5-5, 3.46 ERA) turned in a strong six-inning start, in which he struck out six men. He was hit with the loss as he was charged with three runs on six hits, with one walk.

K.C. Hobson's second-inning single was followed by a double from Marcus Knecht, with Hobson scoring the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Gustavo Pierre. A two-out RBI single by Chris Schaeffer plated Knecht to give the Blue Jays (18-28, 55-57) a 2-0 lead.

Michael Crouse's solo homer in the sixth proved to be the winning run, with an insurance run coming in the bottom of the eighth for Dunedin.

Jon Berti was hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth and then advanced to second on a groundout. On his steal of third base, the throw down from Rafael Neda sailed into left field and allowed him to score.

An attempt to rally by the 'Tees in the seventh would be stopped short as Nicky Delmonico pushed a one-out single to right and stole a base. After Cody Hawn walked, both runners advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. However, neither was able to score as Tyler Ybarra forced Neda to ground out to shortstop to end the inning.

Brevard County was able to put together two runs in the ninth, with the first three batters all reaching against reliever Tony Davis. Nick Ramirez led off with a double and moved to third on a double from Mitch Haniger. Ramirez scored on a wild pitch, which was the fourth ball to Delmonico that took Davis out of the game in favor of Blake McFarland.

Despite a sacrifice fly from Hawn that made it 4-2, McFarland faced just three batters and recorded three outs to end the comeback. Rafael Neda represented the tying run when he came to bat, but grounded out to first to end the game.

Brevard County will attempt to avoid the sweep on Monday night at 6:30 p.m as they send Tyler Cravy (3-1, 2.31 ERA) to the mound. Lefty John Anderson (5-2, 2.70 ERA) will toe the rubber for Dunedin.

River Bandits shutout Rattlers 5-0

Hernandez hits two homers & drives in five; QC defense turns triple play

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/7/2/56719172/cuts/GarzaHitsWeb_uorvf7i9_kfxbnpg7.jpg

Mike Garza had two hits for the Timber Rattlers on Sunday at Quad Cities.

DAVENPORT, IA - The Quad Cities River Bandits returned the favor on the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday evening at Modern Woodmen Park. Wisconsin had beaten Quad Cities 7-0 on Saturday, but the Bandits beat the Rattlers 5-0 on Sunday. Brian Holmes tossed six scoreless innings, Teoscar Hernandez hit two homers and drove in all of the runs, and the River Bandit defense turned a back-breaking triple play late in the game.

Jordan Scott got the first hit for Quad Cities (68-49 overall, 30-18 second half) with a one out bunt single in the third inning. He went to second on an errant pickoff throw. Scott tried to steal third, but was thrown out for the second out of the inning. The next two batters singled against Rattlers starter Jorge Lopez to bring Hernandez to the plate. The River Bandits centerfielder lined a three-run homer to left on an 0-1 pitch from Lopez.

The Rattlers (50-64, 21-28) struggled to get anything going against Holmes. The River Bandits lefty allowed three hits over six scoreless innings with a walk and seven strikeouts.

Wisconsin got something going against Quad Cities reliever Zach Morton in the top of the seventh. Parker Berberet reached on an infield single to start the inning. Alfredo Rodriguez was next and he singled up the middle to put runners on first and second with no outs. Lance Roenicke was next and he sent a slicing line drive down the line in right field that looked like it would drop in for extra bases with Berberet racing around third and Rodriguez halfway between second and third.

But, Jordan Scott made a great running catch for the first out. He threw back to first to double off Rodriguez. The throw to second tripled off Berberet to end the inning.

Hernandez put an exclamation point on his day with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Rattlers loss did not allow them to pick up ground on Peoria in the second half Western Division Wild Card race. Peoria lost 6-5 at Clinton earlier on Sunday afternoon. The Rattlers trail Peoria by four games with 21 games remaining in the regular season.

The final game of the three game series is Monday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Austin Ross (0-0, 4.96) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Mark Appel (1-0, 2.29), the #1 overall pick in the 2013 draft, is the scheduled starter for the River Bandits. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

HOME RUNS:

QC:

Teoscar Hernandez (11th, 2 on in 3rd inning off Jorge Lopez, 2 out)

Teoscar Hernandez (12th, 1 on in 8th inning off Jono Armold, 1 out)

WP: Brian Holmes (4-3)

LP: Jorge Lopez (6-8)

TIME: 2:11

ATTN: 4,171

This is the darkest timeline – Postgame post for August 11, 2013

Wisconsin Boxscore

Jorge Lopez' Jekyll & Hyde end of the season continues... in case it has slipped past you, he's literally been alternating good and bad outings since the beginning of July.

With just 6 hits and no XBH there wasn't much else to talk about but at least Michael Garza had 2 pushing his season BA up to .291.

Brewers pick up road win over Mustangs

The Helena Brewers sure like playing at Dehler Park.

Helped along by several Mustangs miscues, the Brewers took a 3-1 win over Billings on Sunday. It was the team’s fifth win at Dehler this season — the same number of wins the struggling Mustangs have picked up in their home park in 25 attempts.

The win pushes Helena to 29-21 on the season, one game back of red-hot Great Falls in the Pioneer League North Division standings.

Helena scored in the first inning without getting a hit. Leadoff hitter Omar Garcia stole second after being hit by a pitch, then went to third when pitcher Zach Weiss’ pickoff attempt sailed into center field. Garcia then scored on a groundout by catcher Dustin Houle.

In the top of the second frame, Weiss allowed a leadoff home run to Jose Pena — his fifth of the season — to make it a 2-0 Brewers lead.

Weiss was able to get out of the inning quickly after that, but was forced to leave the game two outs into the third after taking a Taylor Brennan line drive off his pitching shoulder.

Brennan’s liner put runners on the corners with two outs, but reliever Jose Guzman struck Pena out swinging to end the threat.

Guzman continued his strong play through the heart of the contest, striking out five without a walk in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Eduard Reyes, however, was also putting on a show for the Brewers. Relieving starter Brandon Moore, Reyes surrendered just four hits and struck out four in his five innings of work, earning his third win of the season.

Billings did get one run back in the sixth, though, when Ty Washington doubled with two outs and scored on a Carlos Sanchez single.

After a quick and scoreless seventh for both sides, the Brewers got that run back in the eighth when Mustangs shortstop Robert Bueno booted two consecutive potential double-play balls.

The second of those errors allowed Nathan Orf to score, making it a 3-1 game.

The Mustangs made it interesting down the stretch, though, loading the bases in both the eighth and ninth innings.

The eighth-inning threat ended when Tyler Alexander replaced Estevenson Encarnacion, who had issued three consecutive walks with two outs. Alexander promptly struck out Gabriel Rosa on three pitches to send it to the ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Billings loaded the bases with a trio of singles.

Jonathan Reynoso was called out on strikes for the second out of the frame — a call he disagreed with, prompting an ejection — before Washington grounded into a game-ending force-out.

Alexander went 1 1/3 innings to pick up the save and lower his already sub-1.00 ERA.

Offensively, Helena shortstop Angel Ortega turned in his first three-hit game of the year, going 3 for 4 to pace the Brewers.

The rest of the team’s nine hits came from Garcia, Orf, Brennan, Pena, Renaldo Jenkins and Charlie Markson.

The teams will finish their series tonight in Billings before Helena returns home to Kindrick Legion Field for a seven-game homestand. The stretch opens with a four-game set with Orem and finishes with three against Grand Junction.

Stars Take Series Finale in Chattanooga

Alex Cohen, Huntsville Stars

Chattanooga, TN – Wrapping up a five-game series at AT&T Field, the Huntsville Stars beat the Chattanooga Lookouts by a score of 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.

In recording their seventh shutout of the season, starting pitcher Ariel Pena improved to 6-8 on the season, blanking the Lookouts bats through the first five innings of the game. The Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May earned his first win in ten starts since that point by giving up just five hits while striking out four batters and walking five as well.

To ensure the victory for Pena, righty Brooks Hall pitched two innings of scoreless relief while relievers Casey Medlen and Kevin Shackelford each pitched a scoreless frame respectively to finish the game.

On offense, the Stars got all the support they needed from an RBI single from shortstop Hector Gomez in the third inning against Lookouts starting pitcher Ross Stripling (L, 5-3). Huntsville duplicated that same result one inning later with an RBI single from outfielder Chadwin Stang.

In terms of run support, the Stars got a pinch-hit RBI groundout from Brock Kjeldgaard in the eighth inning and an RBI double from first baseman Jason Rogers in the top of the ninth.

As a team, the Stars churned out 11 hits, led by three from Gomez. Catcher Anderson De La Rosa, Rogers and Stang each had two of their own.

For Rogers, his two doubles gives him a team-leading 22 on the season. He now has a league-leading 79 runs batted in on the season.

With the victory, the Stars finished up their season series against the Chattanooga Lookouts with a 9-6 record, including seven wins in ten games at AT&T Field.

After an off day on Tuesday, the Stars will return home to Joe Davis Stadium to open up a five-game series with the Mobile BayBears. The BayBears are the two-time defending Southern League champs and won the Southern League South division crown in the first half this year.

Wednesday marks a stretch off 11 games in ten days at Joe Davis Stadium for the Stars.

Nashville Sounds

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Nashville Sounds gained a split of a four-game set with a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Sunday evening at Security Service Field.

Right-hander Jimmy Nelson (3-4) picked up the win for the Sounds after allowing one run on five hits and striking out five batters over his five innings of work. He lowered his Triple-A ERA to 3.54 with the effort.

Blake Lalli (2-for-4) powered the Sounds to an early lead with a two-run homer in the top of the second inning off Sky Sox starter Armando Galarraga, the backstop's 11th roundtripper of the year. Josh Prince (2-for-3), who preceded Lalli with a single, also scored on the blast (audio).

Colorado Springs halved the Nashville lead to 2-1 in the third when ex-Sound Hernan Iribarren led off with a single and later scored on Ryan Wheeler's one-out double to center.

Nashville tacked on a run in the fifth when Eugenio Velez's sacrifice fly plated Blake Davis (audio), who had opened the frame with a single.

Johnnie Lowe (1.0 IP) and Brent Leach (2.1 IP) worked scoreless relief for the Sounds to keep it a 3-1 contest until the ninth, when the Sky Sox didn't go down without a fight against Sounds closer Jesus Sanchez.

After Sanchez retired the first two hitter of the inning, Jordan Pacheco, Tim Wheeler, and Iribarren strung together three consecutive singles, which made it a 3-2 game and placed Wheeler at third as the tying run. Sanchez then retired Reid Brignac on a game-ending soft lineout to third (audio).

The Sounds continue their West Coast road trip on Monday in Reno, Nevada with the 9:05 PM CT opener of a four-game series at Aces Ballpark. Left-hander Chris Narveson (4-6, 4.99), who has worked a Nashville season-high 16 2/3 consecutive scoreless frames over his last three outings, will make the start for the Sounds. Reno will counter with southpaw Tyler Skaggs (6-7, 4.12).
