Prospect Hot Sheet (Aug. 9): Carlos Correa Is Finishing Strong

11. Javier Baez, ss, Cubs

Team: Double-A Jackson (Southern)

Age: 20

Why He’s Here: .444/.483/.630 (12-for-27), 4 R, 5 2B, 7 RBIs, 2 BB, 7 SO, 3-for-3 SB

The Scoop: Southern League fans got the full Baez experience this week. He provided highlights all around with four multi-hit games, five extra-base hits, a strikeout per game on average and three errors. Those three errors give him 40 for the season. That’s a pretty large number, but it also comes as more scouts and coaches give Baez a chance to stick at shortstop then they did when he was drafted. Those who’ve seen him last year and this say he looks a little quicker at shortstop than he did last year, and his error count ought to decrease as he gains experience.

13. Kris Bryant, 3b, Cubs

Team: short-season Boise (Northwest)

Age: 21

Why He’s Here: .462/.533/1.077 (6-for-13), 2 HR, 2 2B, 5 RBIs, 6 R, 2 BB, 3 SO

The Scoop: We hope no one was actually worried when Bryant started his pro career 2-for-18. Now that the reigning College Player of the Year appears to have gotten his feet under him again, he’s hit .359/.422/.769 with four homers in his last 11 games, during which time he coincidentally has an 11-game hitting streak. Combining his college and pro home run totals, he’s up to 35 longballs in the 2013 calendar year.

Tons of Cubs questions... bah!

Prospect Hot Sheet Chat With Matt Eddy

mossy (dayton): Good to see Cubs on thias list again, With the international signings and recent draft where do cubs end up on organizational ranks when talking farm systems?

Matt Eddy: Because of the comparative certainty of top-tier position prospects, such as Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, Jorge Soler and Albert Almora, the Cubs would rank up near the top for me. They addressed a shortage of pitching at the trade deadline, picking up C.J. Edwards (high ceiling, but far, far away) and Jake Arrieta and Justin Grimm, two righties with more modest ceilings but the raw stuff to contribute on a first-division pitching staff (though probably not in leading roles).

Mike (DC): Can you rank the three young pitchers; Glasnow, Wisler and Sims in upside and likely MLB outcome?

Matt Eddy: Pirates RHP Tyler Glasnow and Braves RHP Lucas Sims have the better fastballs, but Padres RHP Matt Wisler is a safer commodity given that we know how his stuff plays versus Double-A competition. He's also farther ahead of the other two when it comes to commanding the ball. I'd probably go Sims, Wisler, Glasnow for future impact potential, though Wisler could be a full two years ahead on the developmental curve.

Eric (ChiTown): Any concerns about Oscar Taveras losing almost a full season due to injuries?

Matt Eddy: It's certainly not how you'd draw it up if you're the Cardinals, but don't forget that stars like Chipper Jones (1994) and Joe Mauer (2004) missed practically the entire season at the point at which they were to be MLB rookies.

Alec (Az): I know Baez, Soler, Bryant, even Almora get all the attention in Chicago but I've slowly but surely fallen for Arismendy Alcantara. Do you see him as a June '14 call up and what do you project for him as a major leaguer?

Matt Eddy: Cubs Double-A middle infielder Arismendy Alcantara has the potential to be a first-division second baseman. He has a feel to hit and generates surprising power from a 5-foot-10 frame. I think your optimism is warranted.

Ben (Chicago): Doesn't is make sense for the Cubs to deal a player like Castro currently in his prime and maximize its return? Teams would overpay for him now and given his inability to play a high end SS he is basically a one dimensional player. The Cubs are still 2-3 years away from getting all their pieces to the major league level and actually being re-built.

Matt Eddy: With all the left-side-of-the-infeld talent the Cubs will be bringing to Wrigley in 2014 and ’15 -- Bryant, Baez, Olt, possibly Alcantara -- they will face some interesting decisions.

Kevin (Houston): Where would you rank Kyle Hendricks, based on his performance this season. In both the Cubs system as well as overall, does he crack the top 100?

Matt Eddy: The Southern League leader in ERA, WHIP and walk rate, Cubs RHP Kyle Hendricks will be a strong candidate for the Cubs top 10. He has sharp control but no standout pitch, so a development along the lines of Dillon Gee or Josh Tomlin (before he got hurt) could be a possibility. Hendricks was part of the Dempster deal with the Rangers in 2012.

Rocky (Ohio): Matt, who do you think has more upside as a starter, Kevin Gausman or Carlos Martinez? And do you think the Cards will keep Carlos as a SP? Thanks!

Matt Eddy: For me, it's Orioles RHP Kevin Gausman. He probably wasn't ready to be pushed to the highest levels so quickly, but he really commands a great fastball-changeup combo and will only improve his breaking ball as he throws it more often.

Howard (New York City): Hi Matt, I'm in a long term keeper league and I'm wondering which of the following SS prospects you project to be solid offensive contributors in the future: Abiatal Avelino (NYY), Franklin Barreto (Tor), Alen Hanson (Pit), Oscar Mercado (StL), Roman Quinn (Phi) and Tanner Rahier (Cin)

Matt Eddy: If you have your pick, you have to take Alen Hanson. Maybe he winds up at second base, but he’s the safest bet to hit.

Rattlers get Strong showing for a win at Peoria

Wisconsin starter tosses seven solid innings; Offense collects 12 hits

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

PEORIA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers needed a win over the Peoria Chiefs on Friday night at Dozer Park to keep their playoff hopes alive. Starting pitcher Mike Strong did his part and the Rattlers offense did their part to get Wisconsin a much needed 4-2 win over the Chiefs.

Wisconsin (49-63 overall, 20-27 second half) got out of the gate in a hurry. Tyrone Taylor started the game with a double. Mike Garza cracked a two-run homer to left-center with one out and the Rattlers had a 2-0 in the first inning.

Taylor put Wisconsin up 3-0 in the top of the second. Max Walla doubled to start the inning and came in on Taylor's two-out single.

The Chiefs (62-52, 24-23) cashed in a leadoff walk in the bottom of the second to cut into the Rattlers lead. Breyvic Valera drew a walk and stole second. Juan Herrera singled to right and that got Valera home to make the score 3-1.

Walla and Taylor combined to add to the Rattlers lead in the fourth inning. Walla started the inning with a double and took third on a ground out. Taylor's two-out infield single was enough to score Walla and the Rattlers were up 4-1.

Strong shut the Chiefs down from the RBI single by Herrera in the second and the end of the sixth as he retired fourteen straight Peoria batters. Jeremy Schaffer snapped that string with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Schaffer's tenth home run of the season cut Wisconsin's lead to 4-2.

Strong made it out of the seventh inning with no more runs scored against him. In his first start since June 7, Strong went seven innings to match his professional high for innings pitched in a game. He walked three, allowed two hits, and struck out six.

Rodolfo Fernandez took over in the bottom of the eighth inning and worked around a two-out triple to send the game to the ninth with the Rattlers still up by two runs. Fernandez finished off the Chiefs with a 1-2-3 ninth inning and the Rattlers picked up the win.

Walla, Taylor, and Garrett Cooper led the way for the Timber Rattlers offense. Walla picked up his third 4-hit game of the season with three doubles, a single, and two runs scored. Taylor, in his second game back off the disabled list had a double, two singles, a run scored, a stolen base, and two RBI. Cooper went 2-for-4 in the game for his fifth straight multi-hit game.

Wisconsin's victory moved them back to within four games of the Chiefs for the second half Western Division Wild Card. There are 23 games remaining in the regular season.

The Timber Rattlers continue their road trip on Saturday night with game one of a three game series against the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park. Tyler Wagner (8-8, 3.38) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Joe Bircher (3-1, 2.96) is set to start for the River Bandits. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

Manatee starting pitcher Mark Rogers, who is on a Major League rehab assignment, threw 2.2 innings and allowed one run in Brevard County's 8-2 win over the Tampa Yankees on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera

AUDIO: Stephen Peterson Pre-Game Interview

VIERA, Fla. - With the game tied 2-2; the Brevard County Manatees scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth en route to an 8-2 win and a three-game sweep of the Tampa Yankees on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium.

After retiring Tampa reliever Taylor Garrison retired the first man he faced, he surrendered a ground-rule double to Nick Ramirez, who drove a ball into right-center field that bounced over the outfield fence.

Following back-to-back walks to Mitch Haniger and T.J. Mittelstaedt to load the bases, Greg Hopkins lined a ball down the left field line for a two-RBI double - his third hit and second double of the game - giving the Manatees (21-24 second half, 58-54 overall) a 4-2 lead. Brevard County was not done, though.

Cody Hawn was intentionally walked to set up a possible inning-ending double-play. Rafael Neda though made the Yankees (21-23 second half, 49-63 overall) pay for that decision. Neda cleared the bases with a double into left to make it 7-2 and ended up on third base after advancing on the throw.

Ben McMahan then tacked on an insurance run with a sacrifice fly scoring Neda from third base. For the Manatees, the six runs in the frame were the most for Brevard County in a single inning so far this season.

Tommy Toledo entered the game in the top of the ninth in a non-save situation. He issued a two-out walk, but was able to shut the door as Brevard County completed the sweep.

The Manatees opened the scoring in the first inning, when D'Vontrey Richardson scored on a Bryan Mitchell wild pitch. Richardson had led off the frame with a double and moved to third on a Yadiel Rivera groundout.

The Yankees tied the game up in the second. With one out, Tyson Blaser singled and then stole second base. A ground out then advanced Blaser to third and he came across to score on wild pitch from Mark Rogers (0-0, 5.79 ERA).

For Rogers, it was his second start with the 'Tees on his Major League rehab assignment. He tossed 2.2 innings and allowed two hits, while striking out three. Taylor Mangum replaced Rogers and threw 3.1 scoreless frames as he allowed just one hit and one walk.

The 'Tees retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Hawn drew a lead-off walk and Neda followed with a single. Then, a wild pitch from Mitchell with Ben McMahan at the plate allowed both runners to advance to second and third, respectively.

McMahan would groundout and neither runner advanced. Richardson then grounded into a fielder's choice and Tampa Dan Fiorito third baseman Hawn out at home to preserve the tie. Rivera though would step up with two outs and hand Brevard County a 2-1 lead with a single to left to plate Neda.

Tampa would match the 'Tees once again in the seventh inning. Taylor Dugas drew a two-out walk from Dan Meadows. Dugas then stole second and scored when Dan Fiorito singled into center.

The Manatees kick off a seven-game road trip on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m., as they begin a three-game series with the Dunedin Blue Jays. Damien Magnifico (0-2, 5.79 ERA) will get the start for Brevard County.

Chiefs fall short of series sweep

Peoria held to three hits in 4-2 loss to Wisconsin

By Adam Duvall, Peoria Journal Star

PEORIA — Brooms in the Peoria Chiefs clubhouse remain locked up during the second half of the Midwest League season.

Peoria was unable to complete the series sweep against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, suffering a 4-2 loss in front of 5,019 fans at Dozer Park on a clear and warm Friday night. The last time the Chiefs swept a series was right before the all-star break in June against Cedar Rapids.

“We had a chance to sweep both teams (Wisconsin and Burlington),” Chiefs manager Dann Bilardello said, “but it’s hard. Baseball is a hard game to sweep anybody.”

Jeremy Schaffer set the final score when his lead-off home run in the bottom of the seventh landed in the left-center field berm. The clean-up hitter gave the Chiefs (62-52), who wrapped up a seven-game homestand, just their second hit of the game off Wisconsin starter Michael Strong.

The solo shot was Schaffer’s 10th blast of the season.

Strong (3-3) went six strong innings, tossing 90 pitches, striking out six, walking three and giving up two earned runs. The left-hander retired 13 in row before giving up that homer to Schaffer.

“(Strong) did a nice job, kind of effectively wild early on, and I’m not sure we did get a really good read on him,” said Bilardello, whose team was outhit 12-3.

The Chiefs had the tying run at the plate in eighth, but Wisconsin reliever Rodolfo Fernandez struck out Trevor Martin to end the threat. Charlie Tilson gave the Chiefs a glimmer of new life when he roped a two-out, stand-up triple to right, but he was left stranded.

Peoria went down 3-0 in the second. Wisconsin lead-off hitter Tyrone Taylor (3-for-5, two RBIs, double) roped a 3-2 pitch into left field to score Max Walla, who reached on a one-out double.

Walla went 4-for-4 with two runs and three doubles — all off starter Brad Watson. Those two-baggers were three of five extra base hits in the game for the Timber Rattlers (49-63).

Watson (2-5) tossed 98 pitches, struck out eight, walked one, but gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings of work.

The Chiefs cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second. Right-hander Juan Herrera took an 0-1 pitch to the opposite field, scoring Breyvic Valera.

However, Taylor gave the Rattlers a three-run cushion again in the fourth. Third baseman Ildemaro Vargas fielded the centerfielder’s hit, a sharp grounder deep in the hole, but was unable to get off a throw as Walla scored.

In the top of the first, Mike Garza gave Wisconsin a 2-0 lead. The No. 3 hitter put a 2-0 pitch from Watson halfway up the left-center field berm for his third home run of the season.

The Chiefs gave up only two runs in the first two games of the series versus Wisconsin.

NOTES: Peoria reliever Brady Adamek (elbow) was removed in the eighth inning as a precaution. ... Chiefs rightfielder Nick Martini was ejected after his strikeout in the fourth inning. ... Larry Allen (home plate), Charlie Ramos (first base), and Chase Eade (third base) made up the rare three-man umpire crew. ... Fans at Dozer Park went home with some free fast food vouchers — an ice cream slush from Sonic thanks to Jeremy Schaffer’s home run and a cheeseburger from Hardee’s as Wisconsin’s Chris McFarland struck out three times.
