Peoria puts out Wisconsin 3-1

Chiefs take game one of important series

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

PEORIA, IL - The Peoria Chiefs stopped the three-game winning streak of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers with a 3-1 victory at Dozer Park on Wednesday night. The Chiefs, who currently hold the second half Western Division Wild Card spot, knocked the Rattlers farther back in the playoff chase.

Peoria (61-51 overall, 23-22 second half) grabbed the lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Jordan Walton doubled to start the frame. Jeremy Schaffer followed with a single to right to put runners on the corners. Bruce Caldwell drove in Schaffer with a sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin (48-62, 19-26) tied the game in the top of the fifth. Orlando Arcia singled and stole second. Chris McFarland tripled to the gap in right-center to send Arcia home with the tying run.

But, the Chiefs went back in front in the bottom of the fifth. Juan Herrera singled and stole second against reliever Chris Razo to start the inning. Razo struck out Jonathan Keener, the next batter in the order, but a wild pitch let Herrera take third and Keener to reach base. Charlie Tilson grounded into a force out at second to get Herrera home for a 2-1 advantage.

Peoria added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Breyvic Valera singled and stole second to start the inning. Walton singled to right to drive in Valera and the Chiefs were up 3-1.

Perry scattered seven hits over seven innings, walked none, and struck out four to put himself in position for the win.

Joe Donofrio took over for Perry in the top of the eighth and struck out the side in order.

Michael Reed started the top of the ninth with an infield single. Reed, who had two hits in four trips to the plate in the game, extended his current hitting streak to thirteen games. But, Donofrio would not let the Rattlers rally as he struck out the next two batters and got the final out of the game on a fly ball to right.

The loss dropped the Timber Rattlers four games behind the Chiefs in the race for the second half Western Division Wild Card spot with 25 games remaining in the season.

Game two of the series at Dozer Park is scheduled for Thursday night. Ryan Gibbard (4-3, 5.15) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Silfredo Garcia (3-4, 4.76) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

VIERA, Fla. - T.J. Mittelstaedt's third walk-off home run of the season lifted the Brevard Manatees to a 4-2 win over the Tampa Yankees in 12 innings on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

It was the ninth walk-off win for the 'Tees (19-24 second half, 56-54 overall) on the season and the sixth that Mittelstaedt has been a part of. He has also recorded a game-winning double and scored two game-winning runs.

With the game tied 1-1 after nine innings, both teams scored a run in the tenth. After Tampa (21-21, 49-61) scored on Peter O'Brien's RBI triple, Brevard staged a rally in the bottom of the frame.

Cameron Garfield walked to open things up, though pinch runner Ben McMahan was erased on a fielder's choice that allowed Cody Hawn to reach. Greg Hopkins then singled up the middle and then Mittelstaedt reached on an error to load the bases.

Manny Barreda sailed a wild pitch, allowing Hawn to score the tying run, but Barreda was able to settle down and strike out the next two batters to end the inning and the threat.

Both teams battled all night long, with Brevard County taking an early lead in the bottom of the second. Mitch Haniger led off with a single, moved to third on a single by Garfield and then scored on a Hawn sacrifice fly.

Right away, the Yankees even the score after Rob Refsnyder doubled to start the third and scored two batters later on O'Brien's single.

Both pitching staffs kept the contest low-scoring, with the starters each taking no-decisions despite strong performances.

Brevard County's Brent Suter (7-7, 3.30 ERA) scattered seven hits in his seven innings of work as he walked only two, while recording four strikeouts and giving up just the one run in the third inning.

Making his first career start after 101 relief appearances, Tampa's Branden Pinder held the Manatees to one run on three hits in four innings. He did not issue a walk and notched a pair of strikeouts.

Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte threw a perfect fifth before giving way to Dietrich Enns, who was on for the Manatees run in the tenth but posted an impressive line of five strikeouts and just two hits in 4.1 innings of work for the Yankees.

The loss went to Barreda, who worked 2.1 innings and gave up three hits, while striking out three.

After three innings of work from Stephen Peterson, Tommy Toledo picked up the victory with two innings of one-hit ball.

Both Nick Ramirez and Greg Hopkins went 2-for-5, while D'Vontrey Richardson's 14-game hitting streak was snapped as he went 0-for-3 with a walk and a hit by pitch.

The Manatees and the Yankees will square off again on Thursday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Jacob Barnes (6-5, 3.24 ERA) is scheduled to take the hill for Brevard County against Tampa's Scottie Allen (8-4, 3.51 ERA).

Final: @Helena 11, Missoula 5

Helena box score

Lots of attractive batting lines as you might expect on a night when the Brewers banged out 19 hits. Michael Ratterree, Renaldo Jenkins, and Ruben Ozuna each had three, and several other players had two. 18 of the hits were singles, Dionis Hinojosa's double being the exception.

Taylor Williams pitched well in his three shutout innings, striking out three while allowing just a hit and a walk. Despite picking up the win, Barrett Astin continues to have mixed results. He didn't allow an excessive amount of baserunners, but when you're only going a few innings at a time, homers are going to hurt you, and Astin allowed another one today. In 25.2 innings he's now allowed five homers despite having what seems to be a very effective sinker (7/0 GO/FO today). Maybe he likes to hang his slider.

Besides Williams, Tanner Poppe and Tyler Alexander also made appearances. I continue to dream of a night in which Helena's pitching section of the box score features an appearance by Taylor Williams, Tanner Poppe, Tyler Alexander, Tyler Linehan, Tristan Archer, and Trevor Seidenberger. Maybe after Seidenberger gives up 17 runs they can bring in Taylor Brennan to finish the game.

Pitching is Clutch, Bats Shine in Win

Poppe gets out of jam, Brewers slug season-high 19 hits

By Zac Vierra / Helena Brewers

In a game in which the Brewers had a season-high 19 hits, it was an inning of clutch pitching that made the difference for Helena in an 11-5 victory over Missoula on Wednesday night.

With three runs already home for the Osprey in the top of the seventh and the Brewers clinging to a 7-5 lead, Tanner Poppe was summoned from the bullpen with men on first and second.

Poppe would strikeout the first batter he faced and walked the second to load the bases.

With two outs and the go-ahead run on first, Brewer-killer Jose Queliz stepped to the plate. Queliz entered the game with a .552 batting average against Helena and last week hit for the cycle against the Brewers.

But instead of feasting on Helena yet again, Poppe struck out Queliz on a high fastball to end the threat and swing momentum to the Helena side.

The Brewers would take that momentum and run with it, scoring four times in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away as Poppe and Tyler Alexander closed the door on the Osprey in the final two frames.

"To be able to tack on insurance runs like that, that takes a load off and now Poppe doesn't have to be as fine, he can trust his defense and Alexander comes in and finishes the game 1-2-3, that's all you can ask for," said Helena skipper Tony Diggs.

Helena slugged 19 hits on the evening, two more than the previous high of 17, as every batter in the lineup had a hit. Renaldo Jenkins, Ruben Ozuna, and Michael Ratterree all had three base knocks while Omar Garcia, Dionis Hinojosa, Dustin Houle, and Taylor Brennan had two hits apiece.

Diggs attributed the success with the bats to the aggressiveness of his hitters.

"[Today they] got in a hitter's count early and jumped on the ball," he said.

Seven of the Brewers' hits came in the first inning as the Brewers scored five times highlighted by a two-run single by Adam Giacalone, an RBI single by Houle, and a single by Ozuna that plated a pair as Missoula starter Carlos Hernandez didn't make it out of the first inning.

"When you have seven hits in the first inning on the way to 19, that's always a good thing to score five runs and get a big lead like that," said Diggs.

Helena starter Taylor Williams (above) was outstanding allowing just one hit in three innings while striking out three. His replacement, Barrett Astin, picked up the win with just one blemish in three innings, a two-run homer by Stryker Trahan in the fifth inning.

The Brewers led for the duration of the game but things got interesting in the later innings. After Missoula manger Robby Hammock got ejected in the top of the sixth, the Osprey rallied in the top of the seventh as Trahan pulled a double into left-center and scored on a single by Jake Miller.

After Juan Santiago walked Antonio Alvarez, Justin Bianco hit an opposite field double to right-center to make it a two-run game. Santiago would then walk Colin Bray and that would be the day for him as Poppe came into the game.

"Santiago struggled a little bit, that's unlike him, but Poppe was right there to pick him up," said Diggs.

Once Poppe got out of the jam, the Brewers scored four times in the seventh highlighted by RBI singles by Jenkins and Ozuna.

With the season series now tied at six, Helena and Missoula will be back at it on Thursday night at Kindrick Legion Field. First pitch is at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Big bats, clutch Poppe pitching help Brewers to win

by Amber Kuehn, Helena Independent Record

In a game where Helena recorded a season-high 19 hits, it was a Brewers reliever who had arguably one of the biggest plays of the contest.

With the bases loaded in the seventh and Missoula threatening to tie the game, Helena pitcher Tanner Poppe stared into the eyes of Jose Queliz. The Osprey catcher had been one of the hottest players in the lineup as of late, and Helena’s nemesis after hitting for the cycle against the Brewers last week.

Add to that the fact that Queliz was batting .500 with runners in scoring position, and an astronomical .727 with runners in scoring position and two outs. With him at the plate, it looked as though the hosts were in trouble.

Not so much. Poppe got Queliz to whiff on an 0-2 fastball to get out of the jam, and Helena tacked on four runs in the home half of the inning to beat Missoula 11-5 Wednesday in front of 1,517 fans at Kindrick Legion Field.

“That takes a big load off your defense,” Brewers manager Tony Diggs said of Poppe’s big strikeout. “That was a great job for him. (Juan) Santiago struggled a bit tonight, which was unlike him, but Poppe was right there to pick him up.”

Santiago entered in the seventh with Helena leading 7-2, but left with the ballgame looking very different after giving up a pair of doubles, a single, two walks and three runs. But a strong outing by Poppe – he would finish with four strikeouts in just 1 2/3 innings — and a perfect ninth by closer Tyler Alexander assured the Brewers their first win in the last four games.

“He’s done a good job all season, even in a limited role,” Diggs said of Alexander. “Everything’s working for him.”

Helena jumped on Osprey starter Carlos Hernandez (3-3) early, with five runs on six hits before the right-hander could record a second out. It was the shortest outing of the season for a Missoula starter.

“Guys were aggressive, getting hitter’s counts early and jumping on the ball,” Diggs said.

Brewers starting right-hander Taylor Williams took a perfect game into the third, but saw his no-hit bid erased with a double by Antonio Alvarez. It was the only hit Williams would allow.

Barrett Astin came out of the bullpen and picked up his first professional win after giving up two hits in three innings, with the only damage done being a two-run home run by designated hitter Stryker Trahan.

Left fielder Ruben Ozuna led Helena’s offensive outburst, going 3 for 4 with three runs batted in. Also finishing with three hits for the Brewers were DH Michael Ratterree and second baseman Renaldo Jenkins. Jenkins, who was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, came into the game batting just 3 for 23 against the Osprey this year. But don’t let that fool you, Diggs said.

“Just because his numbers haven’t been good against them doesn’t mean he hasn’t hit the ball hard,” the skipper noted. “But he played well, and it was about time he got that monkey off his back.”

Every player in the Brewers lineup recorded at least one hit, and Omar Garcia, Dionis Hinojosa, Dustin Houle and Taylor Brennan each had two. With his single in the seventh, Brennan extended his hit streak to seven games.

After nearly letting a 6-0 lead slip away, Diggs was encouraged to see his team waste little time getting those runs back in the four-run seventh.

“That was as big as it gets,” he said.

The first-half North Division champion Brewers will look to make it two in a row against Missoula tonight, with Zach Quintana scheduled to take the mound for Helena against Osprey right-hander Adam Miller.

Final: Huntsville 7 Chattanooga 3

The Huntsville Stars used 4 run 4th inning, keyed by a 2 run double by relief pitcher Eric Marzec, to defeat the Chattanooga Lookouts 7-4 Wednesday night. Righty Mark Williams made his first start of the season in a spot situation. He was able to give the Stars 3 1/3 innings. He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits with 1 being a solo home run. His biggest issue was control, he walked 4. Williams threw 66 pitches, 38 for strikes.

After Williams, Eric Marzec (4-0, 2.22) took the hill. He worked 1 2/3 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 2, earning the win. Former big leaguer Micah Owings was next. He worked a scoreless 6th, striking out the side. Finally, Frankie De La Cruz had a bullpen saving performance. De La Cruz worked the final 3 innings, allowing no runs on 1 hit while striking out 3. In the process, he earned his first save of the season.

Stars Snatch Series Opener From Lookouts

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

After a 52-minute rain delay, the Huntsville Stars began their five-game series against the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field with a 7-3 win on Wednesday night.

With the Lookouts sporting a 10-game losing streak coming into the game, the Stars offense was able to capitalize on that lack of confidence early. After outfielder Chadwin Stang led off the game with a double and was advanced to third on a groundout, first basemen Jason Rogers lofted a sac fly deep to centerfield to put the Stars on the board.

For Chattanooga, the closest they would get to the Stars was with a rally starting in the second inning when first basemen Angelo Songco hit a solo homer off Huntsville starting pitcher Mark Williams to tie the game up at one apiece. Two frames later, a bases-loaded, RBI single from shortstop Miguel Rojas off of Stars reliever Eric Marzec gave the Lookouts their only lead of the game.

In his first Double-A start after being a reliever all season, Williams earned a no-decision after giving up two runs in 3.1 innings while striking out five and walking four batters.

The Stars offense got Williams out of harms way in the top half of the fifth inning when they took control of the game. Highlighted by a two-run double by Marzec, a RBI triple from second basemen Nick Shaw and a wild pitch from Lookouts starting pitcher Garrett Gould (L, 2-3) that allowed a run to score, Huntsville took a lead by innings end that they would not relinquish.

Huntsville got their two insurance runs in the seventh inning on a RBI double from outfielder Rene Tosoni and then in the eighth inning on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Rogers.

On the pitching side, Marzec earned the win in relief to improve to 4-0 on the season. In his first outing on the mound with the Stars, two-way player Micah Owings pitched a scoreless frame while striking out the side in the sixth inning. Righty Frankie De La Cruz then came on and notched his first save of the year by sending down the Lookouts scoreless in the final three innings of the game.

Offensively speaking, every spot in the Stars order accounted for at least one hit. Catcher Anderson de la Rosa led the way with a 3-for-4 night at the dish with two doubles.

The contest lasted three hours and 48 minutes, the longest nine-inning contest on the season for Huntsville. Overall, the Stars are now own a 5-1 record at AT&T Field.

For the Lookouts, the loss was their 11th in a row.

On Thursday, the Stars will play game two of a five-game series against the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field. Huntsville will send RHP Drew Gagnon (4-6, 6.22 ERA) Chattanooga will counter with RHP Carlos Frias (0-1, 4.50 ERA). First pitch is 6:15 CT.
