Final: Charlotte 8, Brevard County 1

Brevard silenced in 8-1 loss to Stone Crabs

Manatees finish eight-game road trip with 3-5 mark

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on three hits, the Brevard County Manatees managed just one more hit the rest of the night in a 8-1 loss to the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Monday at Charlotte Sports Park.

D'Vontrey Richardson led off the game with a double to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. He then advanced to third on a balk and scored on a ground out from Yadiel Rivera.

The 'Tees (18-24 second half, 55-54 overall) then put the next two on thanks to back-to-back singles from Nick Ramirez and Mitch Haniger. After Nick Delmonico struck out swinging, Cameron Garfield was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brevard County was unable to take advantage of the opportunity though as Greg Hopkins grounded into a force out to end the inning.

Damien Magnifico (0-2, 5.79 ERA) made his return from the disabled list and got the start for Brevard County and allowed two runs on two hits in three innings of work. Both runs that Magnifico allowed came in the second inning, on a two-run single off the bat of Charlotte's (24-17, 53-55) Lucas Bailey.

Charlotte blew the game open in the fourth inning as Alex Moore came in for Magnifico. Moore was unable to get out of the frame as he recorded two outs, while allowed five runs on four hits and two walks as the Stone Crabs took a 7-1 lead.

After the first inning, the Manatees could only muster two baserunners the rest of the night. Cody Hawn led off the fifth with a single but was then retired on a double play ball. Yadiel Rivera reached in the ninth on a walk.

Brevard County finished its eight-game road trip with a 3-5 mark. After an off-day on Tuesday, the 'Tees will return home for a three-game series against the Tampa Yankees (21-20, 49-60) starting on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m.

TheCrew, I'm curious as to what your take is on Roach. Are we looking at a Nelson Cruz type talent or is he a guy whose swing will really get exposed at the higher levels? Seems like a dead red guy at the plate who struggles with off-speed offerings.

Remember, Nelson Cruz did get exposed in the high minors. Teams viewed him as being like Russell Branyan and passed multiple times on him.

Really, we'll see with him. But we had success drafting other power guys (besides Walla)...hopefully he works out as he's been fun to follow

Final: Mississippi 7 Huntsville 4

Ariel Pena's woes continued Monday night as the Mississippi Braves tagged him with 5 runs in 3 1/3 innings en route to a 7-4 win at The Joe. Pena (5-8, 4.33) started July with an ERA of 3.14 saw it rise to 4.33 after tonight's game. His line was 3 1/3 innings, 5 runs, 4 earned, on 4 hits, 1 home run, and 3 walks while striking out 5. He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch. It took Pena 94 pitches, 56 for strikes, to cover 3 1/3 innings. Pena's GO/FO ratio was 4-4.

So with another short start, the Stars bullpen was called on to cover 5 2/3 innings tonight. Stars manager Darnell Coles used 4 pitchers to do that. Starting with Mark Williams. Williams relieved Pena in the 4th and worked 1 2/3 innings, allowing just 1 hit. Unfortunately, that one hit was a solo home run. He also struck out 3. Arcenio Leon covered the 6th, allowing no runs on 1 hit and 1 walk. Casey Medlen was next out of the pen. He worked 2 innings tonight, allowing 1 run on 4 hits. One of the hits was a solo home run. David Goforth pitched a scoreless 9th, allowing a hit and striking out 1.

Huntsville Box Score

For the 6th time this season, the Stars got a 4 hit night from one of their players. Tonight, it was left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard. Kjeldgaard went 4-4, homered, drove in 1 and scored twice. The home run is his 19th on the season, tying him with teammate Jason Rogers for the Southern League lead. With the 4 hits, he raised his average 9 points. No other Stars hitter had more than 1 hit. Both Nick Shaw and Rene Tosoni each reached base twice, each singling and drawing a walk. For Shaw, he leads the team with 53 walks drawn. Third baseman Mike Walker hit a 2 out, 2 run home run in the first and shortstop Hector Gomez had an RBI double in the 4th. Joey Paciorek and Eric Patterson each singled for Huntsville. Unfortunately, Jason Rogers did not get a hit, snapping his hitting streak at 17 games.

Huntsville Play By Play

The Stars held the lead after the 1st.

Huntsville Bottom of the 1st

Nick Shaw grounds out, second baseman Tommy La Stella to first baseman Christian Marrero.

Rene Tosoni walks.

Jason Rogers flies out to left fielder Robby Hefflinger.

Mike Walker homers (11) on a fly ball to left center field. Rene Tosoni scores.

Brock Kjeldgaard singles on a line drive to right fielder Jose Martinez.

Eric Patterson flies out to center fielder Dan Brewer.

Huntsville (18-25 second half, 47-64 overall) and Mississippi will play the 5th and final game of this series tomorrow night. Brooks Hall is scheduled to start for the Stars. Hall has been limited recently due to pitch counts, so it could be another game where the bullpen sees a lot of work. Game time is set for 6:43 Central with Alex Cohen and the pregame show starting at 6:30.

Rattlers stage ridiculous ninth inning rally for win

Wisconsin scores five runs in 9th for 6-5 win over Beloit

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers stunned the Beloit Snappers with a five run ninth inning for a 6-5 victory on Monday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. This was the second time in just over a week Wisconsin has scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win a game 6-5.

Chris McFarland gave Wisconsin (47-61 overall, 18-25 second half) a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. He cracked a single to center with two outs to drive in Garrett Cooper.

Beloit (65-48, 22-21) evened the game in the top of the fifth inning. Ryan Mathews hit a home run with two out and none on base on a 2-0 pitch from Rattlers starting pitcher Tyler Wagner.

Wagner went six innings, allowed one run on three hits, struck out four, and walked none. But, he left with the game tied 1-1 and had a no decision.

Mathews doubled with one out in the top of the eighth against Wisconsin reliever Harvey Martin. He was still at second with two outs and Aaron Shipman at the plate. Martin got a grounder to second, but the ball went under McFarland's glove and into right-center to let Mathews score the go ahead run.

Beloit tacked on three more two-out runs in the top of the ninth inning. They had two on base with Matt Olson at the plate. Olson cracked a 2-1 pitch from Martin to the beach beyond the wall in right-center and the Snappers were up 5-1.

Dakota Bacus, the Snappers starting pitcher, went back out for the bottom of the ninth inning. Victor Roache was the leadoff batter for the Rattlers and demolished an 0-1 pitch from Bacus deep into the night for a home run to cut the lead to 5-2. The home run was the eighteenth of the season for Roache, who has homered in each of his last three games.

Cooper continued the rally with a sharp single to left field and that knocked Bacus out of the game.

Tyler Vail threw a wild pitch with Parker Berberet at the plate to get Cooper to second base. Vail would strike out Berberet for the first out of the inning. Berberet finished the game 0-for-3 with a hit batsman to see his hitting streak end at 19 games.

Max Walla was next and a wild pitch sent Cooper to third. Then, Walla singled up the middle to drive in Cooper to make the score 5-3.

McFarland continued the rally with a single to move Walla to second. Orlando Arcia doubled to right to drive in Walla, send McFarland to third, and make the score 5-4.

The Snappers brought the infield in for Alfredo Rodriguez, who hit the ball sharply at the shortstop. The throw home got McFarland by a lot for the second out of the inning.

Michael Reed stepped in with runners at the corners and two outs. He blooped a single the dropped between the third baseman and shortstop in short left to drive in Arcia with the tying run. Rodriguez noticed that no one was covering third base and he kept running. Vail raced to third to cover the bag, but the throw from left was off target. Rodriguez scored the winning run and the Rattlers celebrated the unlikely walkoff win.

The Rattlers also beat Burlington 6-5 with a 5-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday, July 28.

The final game of the four game series is set for Tuesday afternoon. Wisconsin has Jorge Lopez (5-7, 5.42) scheduled to start for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit has Andres Avila (4-2, 5.05) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 12:05pm.

Magnet number three in the series of four that are being given away this season by Lamers Bus Lines features Timber Rattlers outfielder Tyrone Taylor. The first 500 fans to attend this game will receive this magnet. Show your business card at the box office on Tuesday and you will receive a box seat ticket, your choice of beverage, and your choice of brat or hotdog for $11.50 from Baker Tilly, WNAM, and WVBO. This offer is also available to fans 55 & older.

If you can't make it to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame show at 11:45am. Tuesday's game is also available on MiLB.tv.

Wisconsin Boxscore

After a Chris McFarland error allowed the go ahead run in the 8th and then Harvey Martin followed that up in the 9th by giving up a 3 run HR, I was so pissed I turned off the game. Of course curiosity get's the best of me and I check back in just time to see the game winning throwing error.

From the TV broadcast Martin topped out at 91, but he was mixing his pitches well. He was not locating all that well, but somehow when he missed he was missing in just about the same spot across the other side of the plate and it worked out for him.

Tyler Wagner looked really good topping out in the mid 90s, he left a couple of pitches up, one of which was hammered off the score board for a HR. Brad Woodall was continually talking about his FB movement in this game and he does have a much better vantage point than we do with a shakey CF camera. Truth be told that CF camera makes me a little seasick at times.

The Rattlers had 4 hits through 8 innings, but piled on 6 in the 9th for that come from behind victory. Michael Reed, Garrett Cooper, and Chris McFarland all had 2 hits a piece. The 9th inning HR by Victor Roache and 2B by Orlando Arcia were the only XBHs for the T-Rats in the contest, but they were timely.

One item that I thought was pretty cool team chemistry wise which Chris won't cover in the game story and probably won't cover in the blog was when Max Walla lined a foul ball directly into the T-Rats dugout during the 4th inning. Arcia acted like he was going to throw the ball back at him and then quick thinking Michael Garza grabbed a towel and waved the white flag. Walla got quite a bit of good natured ribbing when he got back into the dugout after his AB.

With the series win the Rattlers are now 3-8 vs Beloit this year.

One last thought, I'm not sure if I mentioned it before but Reed was on the DL with a hamstring issue and Tyrone Taylor is on the DL with a hip flexor.

Wisconsin Recap

McFarland didn't get the glove all the way down to the ground on what looked like it was going to be short hopping liner... instead of hopping up the ball skidded right underneath his glove.

Beloit Top of the 8th

  • Nick Rickles grounds out, third baseman Mike Garza to first baseman Garrett Cooper.
Ryan Mathews doubles (21) on a fly ball to right fielder Max Walla.
    Dayton Alexander strikes out swinging.
Aaron Shipman reaches on a fielding error by second baseman Christopher McFarland. Ryan Mathews scores.
With Chris Bostick batting, Aaron Shipman caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Parker Berberet to shortstop Orlando Arcia.

The game winning rally which I'm sure Mehring will cover in great detail above. It appeared that Matthews couldn't decide where to go with the ball and he eventually threw against his body and the throw sailed way wide of 3rd. Berberet's strike out ended his hit streak.

Wisconsin Bottom of the 9th

  • Victor Roache homers (18) on a fly ball to left field.
Garrett Cooper singles on a line drive to left fielder Ryan Mathews.
Pitching Change: Tyler Vail replaces Dakota Bacus.
With Parker Berberet batting, wild pitch by Tyler Vail, Garrett Cooper to 2nd.
    Parker Berberet strikes out swinging.
With Max Walla batting, wild pitch by Tyler Vail, Garrett Cooper to 3rd.
Max Walla singles on a line drive to center fielder Dayton Alexander. Garrett Cooper scores.
Christopher McFarland singles on a line drive to left fielder Ryan Mathews. Max Walla to 2nd.
Orlando Arcia doubles (11) on a line drive to right fielder Aaron Shipman. Max Walla scores. Christopher McFarland to 3rd.
Alfredo Rodriguez reaches on a fielder's choice out, shortstop Daniel Robertson to catcher Nick Rickles. Christopher McFarland out at home. Orlando Arcia to 3rd.
Michael Reed singles on a line drive to left fielder Ryan Mathews. Orlando Arcia scores. Alfredo Rodriguez scores. Throwing error by left fielder Ryan Mathews.

Final: @Great Falls 8, Helena 7

Helena box score

The Brewers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and later led 7-4 but couldn't hang on. Danny Keller allowed two unearned runs in three innings but continues to post unencouraging peripherals; since he reappeared in July after missing three weeks, he's tossed nine innings and walked ten while striking out just four. David Otterman has the same issue--he surrended four runs today and has an ugly 15/22 K/BB in 27.2 innings this year.

Dionis Hinojosa tripled and doubled and scored three runs; he was the only Brewer with multiple hits, through Omar Garcia was on base three times with a single and the only two walks the team drew. Pretty blase lines in general given that they scored seven runs.

Helena play-by-play

The Voyagers scored three in the 8th via a back-breaking two-out, bases-loaded double off the usually reliable Andy Hillis.

Great Falls Bottom of the 8th

  • Tyler Shryock walks.
  • Danny Hayes pops out to shortstop Angel Ortega.
  • Zach Voight singles on a line drive to left fielder Dionis Hinojosa. Tyler Shryock to 2nd.
  • Zach Fisher singles on a line drive to left fielder Dionis Hinojosa. Tyler Shryock to 3rd. Zach Voight to 2nd.
  • Pitching Change: Andy Hillis replaces David Otterman.
  • Jacob Morris called out on strikes.
  • Trey Wimmer doubles (7) on a fly ball to left fielder Dionis Hinojosa. Tyler Shryock scores. Zach Voight scores. Zach Fisher scores. Trey Wimmer advances to 3rd, on a throwing error by shortstop Angel Ortega.
  • Justin Jirschele grounds out, second baseman Nathan Orf to first baseman Adam Giacalone.

Sounds Walk Off Against Tucson, 5-4

Two-Out Halton RBI Single Caps Two-Run Rally In Ninth For Red-Hot Nashville

Nashville Sounds

http://i.imgur.com/XdLjfP9.jpg

Sean Halton (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to record a walkoff 5-4 victory over the visiting Tucson Padres on Monday evening at Greer Stadium.

Sean Halton's two-out RBI single to left off Tucson closer Miles Mikolas was the game-winner for the Sounds, who recorded their fourth walkoff win of the year and the second of the current homestand.

- [July 31, 3-2 over Las Vegas, was the other walk-off on the homestand -- TLB]

Trailing 4-3 entering the home half of the ninth, Josh Prince led off with a double to left before Mikolas recovered to strike out pinch-hitter Stephen Parker and Hainley Statia in succession for the first two outs. Kentrail Davis followed with an infield single that put runners on the corners for Nashville, and Eugenio Velez evened the score at 4-4 with an RBI single up the middle.

Halton followed by working a full count against Mikolas then fouling off a pair of offerings before turning the right-hander's eighth pitch of the at-bat into a solid line drive to left to plate Davis with the winning run.

The victory was the seventh in the last eight games for red-hot Nashville (45-72).

Halton went 4-for-5 for the Sounds to continue his torrid hitting. He has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games and is batting .344 (21-for-61) over his last 18 PCL contests.

The visitors took a 2-0 first-inning lead against Jimmy Nelson. Padres left fielder Brandon Allen (2-for-3) plated the first run with a one-out RBI single to right before Gregorio Petit added a sacrifice fly.

The Sounds jumped out to a 3-2 lead with a third-inning rally against Tucson starter Robbie Erlin.

Velez singled, stole second, and later scored Nashville's first run when Allen lost Hunter Morris' one-out single in the lights. With the knock, Morris extended his hitting streak to eight games, batting .333 (11-for-33) over that stretch. The Sounds continued its rally by loading the bases when Robinzon Diaz (2-for-4) singled then pulled in front on Josh Prince's two-out, two-run single to left.

The Padres tied the contest at 3-3 in the top of the third. Allen led off with a double and later came plateward on Scott Moore's one-out single through the right side of the infield.

Tucson first baseman Cody Decker put the visitors back on top in the sixth when he smashed a two-out solo homer to left-center off the scoreboard. The blast, off Nelson, was the infielder's 13th big fly of the year.

Kyle Heckathorn (7-3) was the beneficiary of the late Nashville rally, picking up the victory after working two hitless inning of relief. Mikolas (4-2) was saddled with the loss after suffering his fourth blown save of the year.

The teams wrap up the four-game series with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Tuesday evening. Left-hander Chris Narveson (3-6, 5.51) will make the start for the Sounds. Tucson will counter with right-hander Matt Andriese (1-4, 3.98).

Stars Squander Early Lead Against M-Braves

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

A night after a walkoff walk that snapped their five-game losing streak, the Huntsville Stars squandered a two-run lead and lost against the Mississippi Braves by a score of 7-4 on Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

For the Stars, their early advantage came on one swing of the bat in the bottom of the first inning. With outfielder Rene Tosoni on base after a one-out walk, third baseman Mike Walker launched a two-run blast off of M-Braves starting pitcher Michael Lee (W, 6-8) to put Huntsville up on top early.

Unfortunately, that is where Mississippi took control of the game. After an RBI single from outfielder Dan Brewer cut the Stars lead to one in the second inning, a solo homer from outfielder Jose Martinez off of Huntsville starting pitcher Ariel Pena tied things up at two apiece in the bottom of the third inning.

One inning later, second baseman Tommy LaStella came through with a bases loaded, three-run double to put the M-Braves up by a score of 5-2 and chased Pena from the game. The 24-year-old righty fell to 5-8 on the year after giving up five runs (four earned) in 3.1 innings pitched while striking out five batters in the process.

From that point on, the Stars and the M-Braves traded runs for the rest of the contest.

Huntsville got an RBI single from Hector Gomez in the third inning (audio) and a solo homer from Brock Kjeldgaard in the sixth inning as their only other runs while Mississippi got a pair of solo homers from third baseman Barrett Kleinknecht in the sixth and eighth inning respectively for their insurance runs.

For Gomez, the RBI double increased his hitting streak to a season-high six games while Kjeldgaard paced the Stars offense with a 4-for-4 night at the dish. Kjeldgaard is the sixth Stars player this year to record a four-hit game and is the fourth player to do so over the last month along with 1B Jason Rogers, OF Chadwin Stang and C Shawn Zarraga.

Speaking of Rogers, an 0-for-4 night at the plate snapped his hitting streak at 17 games. It was the longest hitting streak for any Stars player this season and the longest since 2008 when current Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy owned a 22-game hit streak of his own.

The loss clinches a series victory for the M-Braves,

On Tuesday, the Stars will finish up a five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium against the Mississippi Braves. Huntsville will send RHP Brooks Hall (5-7, 4.14 ERA) to the bump while Mississippi will counter with LHP Ian Thomas (6-6, 2.81 ERA). First pitch is 6:43 ET.

Final: @AZL Brewers 5, AZL Royals 4

AZL Brewers Box Score

A-Crew broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the 7th, scoring an unearned run and held on nicely for the much-needed win.

RHP's Jorge Ortega (6 IP), Milton Gomez, and Ryan Deeter (1st pro save) combined to strike out six and walk none, very impressive.

Tucker Neuhaus, playing third base in this one, and RF Elvis Rubio each singled twice. 1B David Denson walked and singled to raise his OBP to .390, impressive in his age 17 campaign.

Apparently veteran P/OF Micah Owings gave an inspired speech to the kids.

Special condolences to catcher Paul Eshleman, who was playing with a heavy heart but dedicated his game to a former college teammate killed in a car wreck this past weekend.

Lets hope once the major league rosters expand that Halton will be back up and getting a more serious look. His numbers at AAA are almost identical to Gindl's, slightly better than Davis' and clearly better than Morris. He looks adequate in the corner OF as well as 1B too.
