Went to the T-rats game today and Roache's HR was a BOMB. I'd have to guestimate 450+.

Other things I noticed...

Max Walla has a slow bat. Considering his milb stats so far it didn't come as a surprise, but I just have to wonder what in the hell the Brewers scouts saw in him. Did make a nice catch in RF though.

Lance Roenicke made a couple boneheaded plays. Falling asleep on the bases, missing a catch at the wall in left, think maybe one more but I'm drawing a blank.

Roache has a lot of Rickie Weeks in him. Lunges at the ball, so doesn't make consistent, solid contact like he should. But when he squares it up, wow.

Covey didn't really stand out to me. Hit 92-93 on the gun a few times, but didn't make me think we missed out on a future mlb player.

Arcia=swag. Looked good at short and hit the ball hard a couple times. Looks like a future stud.

Catcher Shawn Zarraga leaves @HuntsvilleStars game after taking opponent backswing to head/neck, sounded scary but left mostly on own power.

Rattlers beat Beloit 6-1

Roache and Berberet go deep in support of Semmelhack's fine start

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers put together all facets of their game on Sunday afternoon and defeated the Beloit Snappers 6-1 at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Eric Semmelhack allowed one run over six innings as the starting pitcher. Victor Roache and Parker Berberet each hit homers as part of Wisconsin's eleven hit onslaught and the defense played an errorless game.

Christopher Bostick and Renato Nunez got Beloit (65-47 overall, 22-20 second half) on the scoreboard first. Bostick started the top of the fourth inning with a triple. Nunez followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Bostick.

Wisconsin (46-61, 17-25) came back with a two out rally in the bottom of the fourth. Max Walla singled with two out and none on the get Chris McFarland to the plate. McFarland lined a triple into the corner in right to drive in Walla to tie the game.

Michael Reed drew a one out walk in the Wisconsin half of the fifth inning and was at second base with two outs. Then, Roache smacked a double to left-center to send Reed home and the Rattlers were up 2-1.

Semmelhack worked around a one out double in the top of the sixth inning and ended his day with the Rattlers in front. He didn't walk a batter, struck out one, gave up five hits, and was in position to pick up his first win since April 25.

Taylor Wall came out of the bullpen in the top of the seventh inning and worked a perfect frame to maintain the one run advantage. Then, Roache and Berberet gave Wall some breathing room in the bottom of the seventh.

Mike Garza started the rally with a one out single. Roache was next and he crushed a 1-1 pitch from Vincent Voiro over the scoreboard in left-center field for a two-run home run. That was the seventeenth home run of the season for Roache. It also gave him three RBI for the day and 61 runs batted in for the season.

Garrett Cooper followed the home run by Roache with a single. Berberet followed with a line drive home run over the wall in left field for his seventh home run of the season and a 6-1 lead. Berberet's tater also extended his current hitting streak to nineteen games. He has tied Chadwin Stang for the third longest hitting streak in Timber Rattlers history.

Wall would retire the Snappers in order in the eighth, but Beloit loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth. Then, Wall got Nick Rickles to ground into a game-ending 1-2-3 double play.

The Rattlers host game three of the series Monday night. Tyler Wagner (8-8, 3.48) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Beloit has Dakota Bacus (9-4, 3.86) on the bump. Game time is 7:05pm.

The newest mascot of the Timber Rattlers joins the Timber Rattlers Bobblehead Club on Monday night. The first 1,000 fans to attend this game will receive a bobblehead of Whiffer courtesy of Dairy Queen.

Since it's also a KRUZ 106.7 Qdoba Q*Monday, purchase a lunch entrée at either Qdoba location in Appleton and receive a free ticket to either of the remaining Monday home game during the 2013 season.

If you can't make it out to the game, Time Warner Cable SportsChannel has the television broadcast starting at 7:00pm. The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. Monday's game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.tv.

HOME RUNS:

Victor Roache (17th, 1 on in 7th inning off Austin House, 1 out)

Parker Berberet (7th, 1 on in 7th inning off Austin House, 1 out)

WP: Eric Semmelhack (2-6)

LP: Vincent Voiro (5-5)

SAVE: Taylor Wall (6)

Wisconsin Boxscore

That's 2 consecutive really nice outings by Eric Semmelheck. Taylor Wall is looking like more than LOOGY thus far, I guess we'll see as he moves up.

Micheal Garza, Victor Roache, and Max Walla had the multi-hit games.

The Rattlers also played clean defense, it's been a tough stretch defensively for this club.

Final: @Great Falls 13, Helena 2

Helena box score

Well, what's to say that the score doesn't? Starter Anthony Banda allowed twice as many runs (four) as batters he retired (two). Trevor Seidenberger allowed three runs in three innings, which lowered his ERA to 14.04. The Brewers managed just five hits while striking out 11 times. At least Nathan Orf continues to get on base--he had a .478 OBP coming in so reaching in two out of four plate appearances is all in a day's work.

Mass, isn't that likely because the Brewers' conversion of Zarraga to switch hitting 2 or so years ago? I can't imagine a players' SLG will go up when he switches from batting righty his whole life to batting primarily lefty.

My box score standings instincts always draw me first to inherited runners. I realize that bases loaded, nobody out doesn't correlate to man on 1st, two outs, but still.

Baseball Reference doesn't seem to have the season-long info, is that available on the minor league side? Can't believe I never asked before.

Final: Huntsville 3 Mississippi 2 (Walk Off Walk!)

The Huntsville Stars snapped their losing streak in walk off fashion Sunday afternoon at The Joe. Pinch hitter Joey Paciorek drew a bases loaded walk to force in the winning run. The Stars needed, and got, a strong start from Taylor Jungmann. Jungmann worked 6 strong innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, one home run, and no walks while striking out 4. Jungmann didn't figure into the decision today, a rarity this season for him. Over his 6 innings of work, Jungmann threw 103 pitches, 64 for strikes. His GO/FO ratio was 7-4.

After Jungmann left, the Stars needed some help from their bullpen. They got 3 scoreless innings, allowing the Stars to comeback and win it in the 9th. Frankie De La Cruz provided 2 scoreless innings. They were a challenge though as he allowed 3 walks and 1 hit, but no runs. Eric Marzec (3-0, 2.09) worked a scoreless 9th, allowing a hit, and keeping the game tied to allow for the winning rally in the bottom.

Huntsville Box Score

The Huntsville Stars got a group effort as their offense knocked out 12 hits and drew 9 walks, scoring only 3. In the process, they stranded 18, a season high. Shortstop Hector Gomez led the attack today for the Stars. He went 3-4 with a double, RBI, and drew a walk. Gomez now has hit safely in 5 straight games, going 8-17 (.471). Second baseman Nick Shaw also wrapped out 3 hits today. Left fielder Eric Patterson reached base 4 times, scoring twice. Eric drew 3 walks and singled once. Jason Rogers extended his hitting streak to 17 with a single in the 5th. Rogers also drew a walk. Mike Walker singled and drew a bases loaded walk to drive in a run. Chadwin Stang was on base twice, once with a single, once with a walk. Adam Weisenburger singled for the Stars other hit.

The news wasn't all good today. Catcher Shawn Zarraga was forced to leave the game with an injury after he was hit in the back of the head by the backswing of Mississippi Braves second baseman Tommy La Stella. No injury update was available through the end of the game. We'll keep an eye and ear out for an update.

Huntsville Play By Play

The Huntsville game winning rally came against old friend Thomas Keeling (Juan Francisco trade)

Huntsville Bottom of the 9th

Eric Patterson walks.

Adam Weisenburger singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Thomas Keeling. Eric Patterson to 2nd.

Hector Gomez singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Thomas Keeling. Eric Patterson to 3rd. Adam Weisenburger to 2nd.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Joey Paciorek replaces Eric Marzec.

Joey Paciorek walks. Eric Patterson scores. Adam Weisenburger to 3rd. Hector Gomez to 2nd.

Huntsville (18-24 second half, 47-63 overall) and Mississippi will play game 4 tomorrow night at The Joe. Right hander Ariel Pena (5-7, 4.14) will look to break a streak of rough outings as he takes the mound for the Stars. Game time is set for 6:43 Central with Stars Radio Broadcaster Alex Cohen starting things at 6:28 with the pregame show.

Final: Brevard County 9, Charlotte 6

Ninth inning rally spurs Manatees to victory

Delmonico, Richardson each record three hits

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Three runs in the ninth inning broke a 6-6 tie and gave the Manatees a 9-6 win over the Stone Crabs at Charlotte Sports Park on Sunday evening.

Brevard County (18-23 second half, 55-53 overall) had led, 6-3, entering the bottom of the eighth inning, but surrendered that lead completely on two singles, two walks and a ground-rule double against the combination of Chad Pierce and Tommy Toledo.

The Manatees earned all three runs back in the final frame, which was led off by a Nicky Delmonico single that brought in Lenny Linsky to replace Bruedlin Suero (0-1). A single by Cameron Garfield and a sacrifice bunt from Greg Hopkins greeted Linsky, putting runners on second and third with one out.

Cody Hawn was intentionally walked to load the bases before D'Vontrey Richardson knocked in a pair, and Yadiel Rivera also had a solo homer.

Richardson and Delmonico each finished with three hits on the night, accounting for six of Brevard's 15 in total. Mitch Haniger and Ben McMahan's doubles were the only extra-base hits. The only Manatee not to hit safely was Greg Hopkins, with Rivera, Nick Ramirez and Garfield notching two hits apiece.

It was the fourth three-hit game on Richardson's current 13-game hitting streak. He also has four two-hit games, and is batting .431 (25-for-58) since July 23.

Haniger led the team with three RBIs, including one on his ground-rule double, one when he reached on an error, and another when he took a bases-loaded walk.

Hawn gave the Manatees an early lead with an RBI single in the second inning.

Charlotte (23-17, 52-55) rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the same frame, but that lead didn't last long as Brevard fought right back.

All with two outs, a Rivera single and stolen base, Ramirez single, Haniger double and back-to-back singles from Delmonico and Garfield put three runs on the board and gave the Manatees a 4-2 lead before the final out was recorded in the inning.

Each team scored again in the fifth, then the Manatees added an extra insurance run in the sixth before Charlotte's three-run eighth tied the contest.

In a Major League rehab appearance, Milwaukee's Mark Rogers threw the first two innings of the game. He retired the first five batters he faced, but then surrendered two runs on three hits. He did not walk or strike out anybody.

Chad Pierce took the game into the eighth, pitching 5.0 frames with a line that included three runs, four hits, two walks and two strikeouts. One of those hits was a home run by Hector Guevara in the fifth.

Tommy Toledo (3-2) blew the save in the eighth, but went on to earn the win as he took responsibility for one run on two hits and two walks. He also had one strikeout.

On the other side, Felipe Rivero was touched for six runs, five of them earned, on 11 hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Matt Ramsey threw 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, but the Manatees were able to draw four walks against him.

Six total walks taken to just four strikeouts for the Manatees offense marked the first time this season that Brevard County drew more three passes than struck out.

The final game between the Manatees and Stone Crabs in 2013 will be played in Charlotte on Monday night at 6:30 p.m.

Sounds Streak Snapped In 8-5 Loss

Nashville's Hunter Morris Belts 21st Home Run

Hunter Morris (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds had their season-best six game win streak snapped Sunday night at Greer Stadium, losing the lead in the final inning to the Tucson Padres in the 8-5 defeat.

Trailing 5-4 in the ninth inning with the bases loaded, Padres first baseman Cody Decker drove a triple to right field to flip the script on the Sounds for a 6-5 advantage. The Padres added one more run on Chris Robinson's squeeze bunt single to third base.

Reliever Brent Leach (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing the first two base runners on before giving way to closer Jesus Sanchez with one out in the inning. Sanchez walked the bases loaded to set up Decker for his game-winning hit.

Prior to the ninth, Nashville had rallied from two runs down in the fifth inning. Sounds first baseman Hunter Morris crushed a home run to dead center field to score three runs and give Nashville their second lead of the game.

The homer is Morris' 21st of the season, second-most in the Pacific Coast League, and extends his hit streak to seven games for the team's longest active streak.

Nashville jumped out to its first lead by plating two runs in the first inning. Kentrail Davis and Eugenio Velez hit singles to lead off the frame. Tucson right fielder Jaff Decker misplayed Velez's ball to allow Davis to score and Velez to reach third. Sean Halton hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that drove in Velez.

The Padres got on the board in the second inning courtesy of a fielding error by Velez. With runners on first and second Brandon Allen hit a groundball that jumped off of Velez's glove to score the lead runner.

Tucson pieced together a big three-run fourth inning off of Sounds starting pitcher Johnny Hellweg, who had not allowed a team more than one earned run in a single outing since May 21.

Catcher Chris Robinson got the inning started for the Padres, leveling the game with an RBI double into right field that scored Scott Moore, who hit a leadoff ground rule double. Moore's run was the first earned run allowed by Hellweg over his last 27 innings.

Jaff Decker added another Padres' run in the fourth inning with a ground rule double scoring Robinson for the 4-2 lead.

Hellweg was in line for his ninth consecutive win and league-leading 11th of the year, allowing Tucson four runs, three earned, on seven hits and four walks. He fanned four Padres before reliever Travis Webb entered the game in the sixth.

Webb and Johnnie Lowe combined to deliver 2 2/3 scoreless innings for Nashville with three strikeouts. Leach closed out the eighth inning for Lowe prior to the troublesome ninth.

Miles Mikolas (4-1) picked up the win for Tucson, holding Nashville scoreless in the final two frames.

The Sounds look to regain the series lead against the Tucson Padres on Monday night at Greer Stadium. Throwing for Nashville will be RHP Jimmy Nelson (2-4, 3.47) opposite Tucson's lefty Robbie Erlin (6-3, 5.17). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.

Walkoff Walk Ends Stars Skid

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

One night after blowing a ninth inning lead, the Huntsville Stars ran off three unanswered runs and shocked the Mississippi Braves with a walkoff 3-2 victory at Joe Davis Stadium on Sunday evening.

With no scoring after four innings, the M-Braves took their initial lead in the top of the fifth against Stars starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann. After a one-out single from M-Braves catcher Braeden Schlehuber and a groundout from first baseman Barrett Kleinknecht that put him on second, it set the stage for Mississippi starting pitcher Mitch Atkins. The former big leaguer helped out his own cause with an RBI single that broke the scoreless tie.

One inning later, a solo homer from M-Braves outfielder Robby Hefflinger off of Jungmann made the score 2-0.

Those two sequences were the only two instances of struggle for Jungmann on the game. The 23-year-old righty was tabbed with a no-decision after giving up two runs on five hits in six innings while striking out four batters without walking anybody.

The Stars started taking Jungmann out of harms way in the sixth inning, where an RBI single from shortstop Hector Gomez put the Stars on the board and cut their deficit to one run.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Stars began finishing off their comeback against former teammate Thomas Keeling (L, 0-3). With the bases loaded and two outs, Keeling entered the game and walked third baseman Mike Walker to tie the game.

After Stars reliever Eric Marzec (W, 3-0) pitched a scoreless top half of the ninth, Keeling walked outfielder Eric Patterson and gave up a pair of singles to catcher Adam Weisenburger and Gomez to load the bases with nobody out.

Coming into the game as a pinch-hitter, Joey Paciorek then drew a five-pitch walk from Keeling to score Patterson to complete the walkoff victory.

The win in walkoff fashion was the third of the sorts for the Stars this season.

Offensively speaking, Gomez and second baseman Nick Shaw paced the Stars with three hits apiece. With a single in the fifth inning, first baseman Jason Rogers extended his hitting streak to 17 games.

The victory also snapped the Stars season-long losing skid at five games.

On Monday, the Stars will play game four of a five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium against the Mississippi Braves. Huntsville will send RHP Ariel Pena (5-7, 4.14 ERA) to the bump while Mississippi will counter with RHP Michael Lee (5-8, 4.16 ERA). First pitch is 6:43 ET.

Roache continues power surge in Rattlers win

by Tim Froberg, Post-Crescent Media

GRAND CHUTE — The annual EAA convention in Oshkosh may be over, but Victor Roache is putting on an air show of his own with some of the towering shots launched off his bat.

Roache crushed a monstrous two-run homer over the scoreboard in left center field and added an RBI double to continue his second-half resurgence and lift the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 6-1 victory over Beloit Sunday afternoon.

Roache’s seventh-inning moon shot smashed open a 2-1 ballgame and was his second home run in as many days. It was Roache’s 17th homer of the year and put him within striking distance of the club record of 22, held by current Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Khris Davis in 2010.

“It would be pretty cool to do that, but I’m just trying to go out there and have good at bats, and how many I hit is how many I hit,” said Roache, an outfielder who served as the Rattlers’ designated hitter Sunday.

Roache, a first-round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers and the 28th overall selection in the 2012 Major League Baseball first-year player draft, is tied for second in the Midwest League in home runs and leads the Timber Rattlers with 61 RBI. He has also raised his batting average to .249 after hovering around the .220 mark for much of the season’s first half.

“My timing has definitely been better the second half of the season,” said Roache, rated by Baseball America as the seventh-best prospect in the Milwaukee farm system. “It still comes and goes more than I’d like it to, but I made an adjustment the past few days and I’ve gotten good results.”

Roache’s slow start at the plate earlier this year was understandable. He had major wrist surgery prior to being drafted by the Brewers and missed all of the 2012 season. This is his first full season of pro ball and it’s taken him time to knock the rust off his swing and put the injury behind him.

“We kind of felt all along that the more at bats he got, the more damage he could do on a consistent basis,” said Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson. “He’s still not quite there yet, but he’s definitely getting better and better.”

Roache’s long home run off Snappers reliever Austin House traveled an estimated 425 feet.

“He (House) has a little two-seam run to his fastball and his two-seamer ran into the perfect frame of my bat and I caught it pretty good,” said Roache. “I’m just trying to get my foot down early and flat. I’ve been able to recognize pitches better the second half of the season and my confidence is starting to come back.”

Roache had help in the power department Sunday. Two batters after his scoreboard-clearing blast, catcher Parker Berberet socked his seventh homer of the season – a two-run shot to extend his hitting streak to 19 games. Berberet is tied with Chadwin Stang (2012) for the third-longest hitting streak in club history.

“It’s just been one of those hot streaks,” said Berberet. “I think every hitter has one at some time during the year where you just feel really comfortable at the plate. I’m just trying to put the ball in play and to hit it hard. On the home run, it was a fastball that he left up on the inner third of the plate.”

Berberet, a 25th round selection by the Brewers in the 2011 MLB Draft, has raised his batting average to .268. He has also been sharp behind the plate.

“He’s worked his way into our lineup on a daily basis and it’s good to see him having success,” said Erickson. “Right now, it’s hard to take his bat out of the lineup. He’s played well defensively, too. He’s been throwing people out trying to steal. And he’s also taken on more of a leadership role in our locker room.”

Wisconsin received strong pitching from starter Eric Semmelhack and reliever Taylor Wall, who combined on a seven-hitter with just one walk.

“Semmelhack got ahead of guys and got a lot easy outs,” said Berberet. “He made it easy on himself.”

Beloit’s starter was Dylan Covey, Milwaukee’s first-round pick in the 2010 MLB Draft. Covey, a resident of Pasadena, Calif., turned down the Brewers’ offer and chose to pitch collegiately at the University of San Diego after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Following three years at San Diego, Covey signed with the Oakland Athletics after being selected in the fourth round of June’s MLB Draft.

Covey allowed one run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in four innings of work He didn’t get a decision and is still seeking his first win in pro ball.

“He’s a good pitcher. He has good stuff,” said Roache. “He has a little get-up to his fastball and has a good sharp breaking ball.”
