40-man roster discussion

DHonks
If Scooter has to go on DL, can we assume Cecchini will get a call and play some 3B (along with Walsh and Rivera) while Hill does most of the work at 2B in Scooter's absence? The other options, Elmore and Perez are both hitting well but neither are on 40 man. Cecchini has been making good contact too, with just 6 K's.

I just hope they make a quick decision so our bench isn't short. If Scooter needs DL time, then get Cecchini up here. Hopefully that guy will hit allowing less playing time for Hill.

Smith is definitely going to be out at least 60 days, right? If so, is there any value to keeping Smith off the 60 day DL and on the 15 day DL?

Just wondering if a player was going to be out for the season, but they didn't need the 40 man spot, would they keep them on the 15 day DL until they needed the spot?

I see they picked Garza for the 60 day this time, and assume if it needs to happen again that Smith will be reclassified.

Because there's no value to adding a player to the 60-day DL until the roster spot is needed, there's really no reason to make a move like that proactively.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

michael kirkman claimed from the padres. the 40-man is full. kirkman has no minor league options remaining, and has the right to declare free agency if the brewers try to outright him to the minor leagues.

interesting note- if I counted right, there are 39 Brewers who are either currently on the roster, played at least one game this season, or would be on the 25 man roster, if not injured. Of those 39, only 11 of them were either drafted or signed as an amateur by the Brewers, the rest, 28 of them were acquired by other means. this ratio is a little less at AAA, at 13 homegrown and 22 from elsewhere. not sure what this means, other than we don't have a lot of drafted talent in the upper levels.

That will happen when you have a number of very lean draft classes in a row (2010,2011,2012 etc.)

it's a revolving door of relievers out of options who have already been outrighted once before (meaning they have the right to declare free agency if the brewers wish to outright them to the minor leagues).

jhan mariñez becomes the latest, replacing michael kirkman on the 40-man and 25-man roster. as mentioned above, kirkman has the right to declare free agency if the brewers wish to assign him to the minor leagues.

Not one single pitcher on the Cubs staff is homegrown. They seem to be doing alright.

Cubs are playing their pitchers nearly $95M this year as well.

That makes it easy to do all right when you can use money to solve your problems. That's not a criticism. The Cubs have money and are using it. I can't fault them for that. It doesn't always work, but they seem to have done pretty well thus far.

And none of that would have mattered had they not gotten quite lucky in the Arrieta trade. Yes they scouted him and saw something in him the O's didnt but no way did they see this coming.

Of course I love what the Cubs have done and how they did it but luck does have to come into play if you are trying to trade for aces before they become aces.

colin walsh designated for assignment to make room for waiver claim neil ramirez. ramirez was optioned in 2012, 2013 and 2014, so he is out of minor league options. he spent very little time optioned to the minors in 2014 (one stint from 23 march - 24 april), but that was enough to burn his third and final option.

if the brewers wish to send ramirez to the minor leagues and no team claims him, he cannot refuse the outright assignment.

the 40-man roster remains full.

neil ramirez's tenure on the brewers' roster was brief. by being designated for assignment to make room for the healthy corey knebel, it has opened up a spot on the 40-man roster (for the time being). presumably, that roster spot will be used when matt garza is activated from the 60-day disabled list and is returned to the 40-man roster.

jake elmore takes alex presley's spot on the 40-man and 25-man roster. elmore is out of minor league options and has been outrighted to the minor leagues before. if the brewers wish to send him back to aaa, he has the right to refuse the assignment.

the 40-man roster remains full.

Kyle Wren is about 2 more hot weeks in AAA from forcing his way to Milwaukee. A roster spot (Wilkins?) will need to be created for him. 2nd coming of Podsednik??

Yea, depending on how things shake out I could see bringing both Reed and Wren up. Not worried about the 40. Wilkins, Goforth, Cravy...there's a few guys they could take off.

But Santana will be back from DL too. So sending Broxton back down evens that out. But then you need to do something with Kirk and/or Flores to make room for Wren/Reed. It's not like there's a deadline for any of this, so it will probably work itself out naturally.

But if this season is about the future, Reed/Wren should get a look for half a season if Kirk and Flores got that chance.

Flores has been quite a bit better as of late. I'm all for Wren coming up if we want to go younger but no reason to give up on Flores.
