assuming we don't add anyone else to the 40 man before spring training, the new available spot makes the 25 man roster prediction all the more interesting. this obviously opens up hope for the likes of non 40 man guys like Perez, Middlebrooks, Guez, who otherwise were on the outside looking in.

Given current OF situation and the sheer number of guys that don't have options, I'd guess that at least one is released at the end of ST (or early in the season if Flores is injured for some time).

So given that, plus the current opening, you have a lot of flexibility for non-roster invites or other waiver claims that will happen in ST.

as of today, here are the low salary players that do not have any minor league options remaining:

ramon flores

jeremy jeffress

rymer liriano

kirk nieuwenhuis

ariel pena

tyler thornburg

jonathan vilar

plus, rule 5 picks zack jones and colin walsh have to be treated like they have no options remaining in 2016 if the brewers wish to retain either/both.

i can't recall a spring training in recent years where the club has carried so many low salary players with zero options left.

I don't see a whole lot of tough calls in that list though. Jeffress, Thornburg, and Villar are locks to make the team. Unless Liriano has a disaster of a spring, he makes the team. Flores is very likely to start the year on the DL. That leaves Pena and Nieuwenhuis to "battle" for their jobs.

with today's trade of khris davis for two minor league players, the roster is at 39.

The guy Oakland DFA'd might be worth a waiver claim.

LHP Sean Nolin was actually a Brewers draft pick, unsigned out of high school, in 2008.

bringing things full circle, nolin fills the roster to capacity. he is out of minor league options.

ramon flores, rymer liriano, kirk nieuwenhuis - fighting for two, possibly one spots in the OF. Flores' injury status unknown and could start in IR.

jeremy jeffress - Lock for BP

sean nolin - Career MiLB starter that would need to move to the BP to make the team. Late claim, long shot odds. But who knows. Maybe another Will Smith?

ariel pena - Given last year's resurgence and being a year of development, almost 99.9% chance he sticks.

tyler Thornburg - Lock for BP

jonathan villar - Lock for the 25 man. Odds on favorite to start SS.

- So almost guaranteed that one spot opens at the end of ST. And probably 2.

Given that the Brewers have not had a lefty start a game since Tom Gorzelanny in 2013, I hope they look at Nolin as a starter. He certainly has AAA credentials to compete for spot. If he looks good this spring, it's doubtful they can get him through waivers so he can either pitch out of the pen as a long man or perhaps be part of a deal. Since all Brewer starters are RH, having a LH long man makes some sense.

Nolin is first of my (wasn't alone) many "suggestions" that the new regime actually has followed through on. It's nice to hit on one.

this team could look entirely different after the trade deadline. So many pieces that could be moved: Carter, LuCroy, Hill, Anderson, Nieuwehuis, Gennett, Garza. not to mention young, controllable guys, like Smith or Peralta. with so many likely deals, it makes it plausible that we stash some major league guys with options in AAA like Jungmann in order to hold on to the assets listed above with no options left.

Brewers' Transactions Page --

3/14/16 Milwaukee Brewers optioned Michael Reed to Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

3/14/16 Milwaukee Brewers optioned Damien Magnifico to Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

3/14/16 Milwaukee Brewers optioned Jacob Barnes to Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

3/14/16 Milwaukee Brewers optioned Jorge Lopez to Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

3/14/16 Milwaukee Brewers optioned Adrian Houser to Biloxi Shuckers.

3/14/16 Milwaukee Brewers optioned Orlando Arcia to Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

Although the Brewers didn't announce it as part of their press release, this is where the optioned players on Monday landed roster-wise. This rarely changes, but potentially could, between now and Opening Day on the minor league side. So Adrian Houser is slated to open at AA, the others at AAA. No real surprises there. By the way, this was the first option for each of these players, they can be bounced back and forth in 2017 and 2018 as necessary as well.

"The Brewers reassigned No. 2 prospect Brett Phillips, No. 4 Josh Hader and No. 10 Jacob Nottingham, as well as catcher Rene Garcia, to Minor League camp."

For players like these (pre-option years), the Brewers won't announce a specific roster assignment.

Yeah, he was outrighted to the Sky Sox on November 25, 2014, and wasn't added back to the 40-man until last September.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

We'll have to keep an eye on Yhonathan Barrios' shoulder injury, he may be a 60-day DL candidate, which would free up a roster spot.

i can't recall a brewer who was likely ticketed to the minor leagues (such as barrios) ever being put on the 60-day disabled list before opening day. it likely stems from the team's reluctance for that player to earn major league service time (and pay) while on the disabled list.
