40-man roster discussion

DHonks
Agreed, but please don't perpetuate mistruths about the roster rules while forming your opinion.

I think djoctagone more than covered himself by using verbiage like "the assumption is" and "i'd be shocked if."

Over the past page and a half? No. There were several matter of fact statements over the roster rules that were not true. It's been clouding the conversation over what the Brewers can do with Wang with respect to the 40-man roster.

last week, the brewers reclaimed irving falu (putting him back on the 40-man roster) and optioned him to aaa-nashville. to make room, the brewers outrighted kevin shackelford to the minor leagues. because this was the first time shackelford was outrighted, he could not refuse the minor league assignment by the brewers.

also, as noted today, jeremy jeffress has had his contract purchased by the brewers. rob wooten optioned, and he will have two minor league options at start of 2015 spring training. to make room for jeffress, jim henderson was transfered to the 60-day disabled list.

the brewers have designated caleb gindl for assignment and have released hiram burgos. the contracts of matt clark and hector gomez have been purchased. the roster is full again.

hector gomez will have zero minor league options in 2015. it appears that matt clark will have three remaining options in 2015.

alfredo figaro (no options remaining) claimed by texas. matt pagnozzi outrighted (yes, he was with the brewers in september). the roster is now at 38, with many more openings expected when players start to file for free agency.

Brewers activate INF Jeff Bianchi from the 60-day DL (sidelined with elbow injury since July 19th), bringing their 40-man roster to 39 (transactions page).

For the moment, RHP's Jim Henderson and Tyler Thornburg remain on the 60-day DL, and thus don't count against the 40-man.

Bianchi, who is out of minor league options, had already been outrighted off the 40-man in May, only to be re-added in June. Remains to be seen if the Brewers will carry him on the 40-man roster again all winter. If he is dropped from the 40-man again, he can elect free agency, an option he did not take when he could have in May.

one would think that the brewers activated bianchi ahead of henderson and thornburg with the intention of outrighting him so he could be one of the first players to elect free agency. with jeff bianchi, hector gomez and elian herrera out of options in 2015, i can't see the brewers carrying three utility infielders with no minor league options remaining. at least one of those is going to be removed from the 40-man.

I think, and hope, that herrera OR gomez get the shot ahead of Bianchi. we saw enough of him, time to move on and look at other Util IF options

MLB Trade Rumors:

Clearing waivers and being outrighted was Jeff Bianchi of the Brewers. Bianchi, who turned 28 on Sunday, struggled in limited MLB action this year. The utility infielder owns a lifetime .534 OPS through 402 plate appearances in the bigs. Over three seasons at Triple-A, he has posted a more attractive .299/.349/.428 line.

38 on the 40-man, two on the 60-day DL.

bianchi has been outrighted three times by the brewers, and no team claimed him in those instances. compare that to the 2011-2012 offseason, when the royals waived him, the cubs claimed him, the cubs waived him and the brewers claimed him.

the brewers claimed corner infielder luis jimenez from the angels today. it appears that jimenez will have no minor league options entering spring training in 2015, as he was optioned by the angels in spring training in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

the roster stands at 39, with tyler thornburg and jim henderson still on the 60-day disabled list and a score of players waiting to declare free agency.

Sign they don't plan to bring Ramirez back? Hope so. You don't use up 40 man spots for guys you don't think can make your team. Jimenez has solid minor league credentials albeit it in Salt Lake City in AAA. Not far fetched at all that he could post numbers as good as Ramirez can at this stage.

If ARam comes back and they need a 40 man spot, can they not just cut Jimenez? If so, what is the downside?

I doubt this really has any impact on Ramirez at all; more of a direct competitor to Bianchi and the like.

I would say it is probably very far fetched that he could match Ramirez' production next year; at least I sure as heck wouldn't count on it. This guy is probably a 24th/25th man type player.
