Prospect Hot Sheet (Aug. 2): Max Stassi Leads An Astros Avalanche

9. Alex Dickerson, 1b, Pirates

Team: Double-A Altoona (Eastern)

Age: 23

Why He’s Here: .462/.517/.731 (12-for-26), 1 HR, 4 2B, 11 RBIs, 7 R, 2 BB, 1 SO,

0-for-1 SB

The Scoop: No Eastern Leaguer has more than Dickerson’s 16 extra-base hits since the beginning of July, and after his rampage this week he leads the league with 30 doubles and ranks third with a .513 slugging percentage.

13. Mike O’Neill, lf, Cardinals

Team: Double-A Springfield (Texas)/Triple-A Memphis (Pacific Coast)

Age: 25

Why He’s Here: .500/.583/.586 (12-for-24), 1 3B, 8 R, 4 RBIs, 5 BB, 1 SO, 3-for-3 SB

The Scoop: O’Neill is running out of levels for pitchers to refute his hitting approach, which boils down to working the count until he sees ball four or gets a pitch he can line somewhere. He hit .320/.431/.383 at Double-A this season, earning a promotion this week to Memphis. His inability to play center field regularly and an arm that limits him to left field are marks against him developing into a fourth outfielder, but then the Cardinals do have a track record at turning guys who can hit into useful big leaguers.

Keith Law chat --

Jason (Milwaukee): Thoughts on the brewers draft picks so far?

Klaw: Not good. The one pick I really liked, Devin Williams, hasn't pitched well (not a big deal) and I've heard some negative stuff about his makeup as well.

***

Bob (WI): Victor Roache seems to have salvaged his year from a performance perspective with a hot July. Is it a matter of finally getting healthy? Have any positive reports?

Klaw: Tiny sample involved - and he's still striking out a ton and is still too old for the level.

***

Well, Law would have had to hear the Williams stuff after the fact since he was silent in that regard immediately after the draft. Pretty unfair he tosses that out so generically. Boo!

Keith Law is never a good source on prospects imo. He probably hasn't even ever seen Williams or Roache play in person... everything he seems to 'report' on prospects usually sounds like hearsay to me.

Not to mention pinning a guy with the vague "make-up issues" tag two months into his professional career without any further details or supporting evidence is completely reckless.

Williams hasn't pitched well? 6.9 H/9 and 8.7 K/9 for an 18-year-old is poor?

And since when is a 21-year-old "too old" for A-ball?

Osprey beat Brewers in Game 1 of doubleheader

By AJ Mazzolini, the Missoullian

The game belonged to Carlos Hernandez. The only thing that could get to the Missoula pitcher turned out to be his Osprey batters.

Hernandez set a season-high with nine strikeouts and shut down the Helena Brewer bats through six innings. But a half hour of Osprey offense in the bottom of that inning knocked the righty out of this groove for the seventh.

He couldn’t finish the seven-inning game — though the bullpen did for him — as Missoula held on in the first game of a doubleheader, a 5-1 victory.

The pitcher allowed only three hits through the first six innings and was just two batters over the minimum. He walked the 7th inning’s leadoff batter on four pitches before a double put two men in scoring position. After enticing the next Brewer into a groundout, which scored Helena’s only run, Silvino Bracho came on to get the final two outs.

Bracho kept Helena at bay with back-to-back strikeouts.

The Osprey (18-22, 2-0 second half) started giving Hernandez some run support in the third inning. Yorman Garcia led off with a double before Colin Bray and Chuck Taylor followed that with base hits. The lead was Missoula’s at 1-0 on Taylor’s double.

Taylor had sneaked to third before Queliz grounded out to make it 2-0. A game after batting for the cycle against Helena on Wednesday, Queliz finished 2 for 3 with a double and a walk, but had no shot at a second cycle because of the shortened game.

Then came the Osprey carousel in the sixth. Missoula batted around in the inning and scored three times, including one on Stryker Trahan’s fourth home run of the season, a solo liner to right-center field.

The Brewers (23-17, 0-2) went to their bullpen twice during the rally, leaving Hernandez (3-2) to sit a little longer still. His 6 1-3 innings pitcher were also a season high and the only time he’s seen the seventh inning in eight starts.

Final: Charlotte 7, Brevard County 3

'Tees drop series opener in Charlotte, 7-3

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - For the second straight night, the Manatees went down 3-0 through three innings. For the second straight night, the Manatees erased that deficit. Against the Charlotte Stone Crabs, however, the 'Tees couldn't get ahead as they took a 7-3 loss at Charlotte Sports Park to open a four-game series on Friday night.

The Stone Crabs (22-16 second half, 51-54 overall) put up a pair of unearned runs in the second inning, then added another in the third on Jeff Malm's solo home run before a three-run rally for the Manatees in the top of the fourth.

Brevard County (17-22, 54-52) batted around in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs to tie the game and leaving the bases loaded. A double, a single and Ben McMahan reaching on catcher's interference put three runners on right away, with Greg Hopkins providing a two-run single that got the 'Tees on the board.

T.J. Mittelstaedt doubled in a run before D'Vontrey Richardson reached on a fielder's choice. Hopkins being caught between third at home on Richardson's ground ball was the first out of the inning. After a strikeout, Nick Ramirez drew his second walk of the night to load the bases. That walk chased starter Ryan Carpenter for the game, with Andrew Bellatti taking the reins.

Carpenter finished the night with a line of 3.2 innings pitched, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks. Just two of the runs against him were earned thanks to the catcher's interference. He also struck out two batters.

Manatees' starter Cody Scarpetta (0-5) lasted 4.0 full frames, giving up four total runs but only two earned. Against him, Charlotte had nine hits and drew one walk with two strikeouts. Though the nine hits allowed were a season high, it was just the second time he issued only one free pass and it was the first time in three starts that the righty made it through four innings of work.

Scarpetta was held responsible for the loss when he surrendered back-to-back doubles to start the bottom of the fifth, putting the Stone Crabs up, 4-3, before Matt Miller came on in relief.

Bellatti (5-1) sat down all eight batters he faced, and was put in line for the win with the run in the bottom of the fifth.

Miller dug the hole deeper in the sixth, opening with a sequence of a single, a wild pitch, two walks and a sacrifice fly to score a run and leave runners on the corners. Another sac fly put the score at 6-3, Charlotte ahead.

When Alex Moore came on for the seventh, he couldn't keep the home team off the base paths as he hit Willie Argo with a pitch. Argo stole second base, then with two outs advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Kes Carter single.

Dan Meadows pitched a scoreless eighth without giving up a walk, his first appearance without a walk since he was in Huntsville on June 17 and his first Manatees appearance without a walk since May 13.

The series continues at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday in Port Charlotte, with Brevard's Tyler Cravy (3-1, 2.56 ERA) and Charlotte's Jacob Partridge (0-4, 4.68 ERA) squaring off on the mound.

Brevard County Box Score

D'Vontrey Richardson extended his hit streak to 11 games. Nick Delmonico went 1-4 with a double and walk. The only other extra base was T.J. Mittelstaedt's double. Both Mitch Haniger and Greg Hopkins recorded multi-hit nights (each was 2-4).

Sean Halton (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds downed the Las Vegas 51s by a 4-2 margin in front of 8,993 fans at Greer Stadium Friday night to pick up the team's first series sweep of the season. The win extends the team's season-best winning streak to five games.

Tied 2-2 in the fourth inning, Sounds shortstop Josh Prince dropped a triple into right field to lead off the frame and came around to score on a Blake Lalli's double.

Lalli recorded three of the Sounds 10 hits on the night, while Prince and Sean Halton each recorded two knocks.

In the fifth, Prince scooted a ground ball through the infield for an insurance run, scoring Halton from second for the 4-2 lead.

Reliever Zach Kroenke (5-13) picked up the win for Nashville, his fifth, after delivering 4 1/3 scoreless innings for Nashville. The lefty limited Las Vegas to two hits, fanning four and walking one. Reliever Jesus Sanchez notched his third save with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Sounds took the initial lead in the contest when Hunter Morris and Lalli each connected for two-out RBI singles. Morris' knock scored Halton, while Lalli singled in Prince.

Right-hander Marco Estrada started on the hill for Nashville, making a scheduled 50-pitch rehab start for Milwaukee. The nine-year-pro walked Eric Campbell in the second inning and allowed a two-out single to Juan Centeno for his first of two earned runs.

In the third inning, Estrada picked up a quick two outs but then allowed his next two batters on base, before leaving the runners for Kroenke after 47 pitches. Kirk Nieuwenhuis touched Kroenke for a single to left field that allowed Wilmer Flores to score.

Estrada finished with a no decision, allowing two runs on three hits across 2 2/3 innings of work. He walked two and struck out two.

Relievers Kyle Heckathorn and Brent Leach also saw work from the hill for Nashville, combining to pitch a scoreless eighth inning.

Las Vegas starter Jacob deGrom (3-2) was charged with the loss, allowing Nashville four runs on nine hits and two walks.

The Sounds begin a fresh four-game series with the Tucson Padres (Padres affiliate) Saturday night at Greer Stadium. Throwing for Nashville will be LHP Aaron Laffey (5-5, 5.31) opposite Tucson's lefty Jason Lane (2-0, 3.86). First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
