From 7/22/12 - McCalvy:

The Brewers reached an agreement earlier this month with 16-year-old pitching prospect Yosmer Leal, a right-hander from Venezuela who still must pass a physical exam and Major League Baseball's age investigation.

Leal received a $370,000 bonus, according to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez, which would be one of the richest deals in Brewers history for a Latin American player.

Assuming he passes MLB's investigation, standard procedure for all Latin American signees, Leal would begin his career at the Brewers' new academy in the Dominican Republic.

***

Leal hadn't pitched since July 16th before last night. The two-week break didn't help his season-long struggles. Poor guy, MiLB.com and Baseball Reference still don't have height and weight lines for Leal. Leal hasn't had a scoreless outing since his June 5th debut among his brief efforts; last night was his first non-start.

Remember, this is only his age 17 season, so it'll be a great story if he bounces back from these numbers. Obviously, though, the Brewers weren't expecting this.

Stars Fall Short in Jackson

Matthew Raines/ Huntsville Stars

Jackson, TN. – Jason Rogers launched a home run to left in the top of the first and it looked like the Huntsville Stars would return to their winning ways. The Jackson Generals had other ideas though.

The Stars and the Generals played on Thursday, fighting for third place in the Southern League’s North Division. Huntsville jumped out quickly but Jackson scored five unanswered runs to take the lead and never looked back, winning 5-2 and causing the Stars to drop their second series in a row.

The Stars jumped out right away in the top of the first when Rogers’s home run scored himself and Nick Shaw. The Generals answered back in the bottom half of the inning when Chris Taylor led off the inning with a single, stole two bases, and scored on Ji-Man Choi’s groundout. The Generals would tie the score in the bottom of the second after Joseph Dunigan scored following Daniel Paolini lashing a double to left.

The Generals took the lead for good in the third on two doubles followed by a home run by Dunigan, making the score 5-2 going into the fourth. Generals starting pitcher Trevor Miller (W 1-1) and two relievers held off the Stars for the rest of the game even though the Stars got men in scoring position in three of the last four innings.

Huntsville starter Brooks Hall left after the second inning, having giving up two runs on three hits while striking out two, but throwing 42 pitches. Frankie De La Cruz (L 1-3) took the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in an inning of work and threw 35 pitches. Two Stars relievers managed to keep the Generals off the scoreboard for the final five innings, giving up only two hits and striking out nine. The eleven strikeouts by the Stars pitchers were their highest since July 27th when they struck out thirteen.

The Stars were once again led by Rogers, who went three for four with his twentieth double and his league leading eighteenth home run of the season. Shawn Zarraga contributed as well, going two for four. Dunigan led the Generals at the plate, going two for four with his first home run of the season.

With the loss, the Stars record stands at 46-61 on the year, 17-22 in the second half of the season. The Generals record moves to 47-56 on the year, 18-19 in the second half.

Huntsville will return home to Joe Davis Stadium on Friday to open up a five game series with the Mississippi Braves. Game start time is set to start for 6:43 PM.
