Tyler Wagner is having a very nice outing... 5 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 7 SO thus far.

edit. As I type this the boxscore updates.

Now 6 IP, 2 ER, 5H, 2 BB, and 7 SO... too bad, still a nice a outing thus far.

Rough series for the snakes. TheCrew07, what is your take on Wagner? I've seen it mentioned he touches 95, 96. Is the fastball too straight and are the secondary offerings a work in progress? Is there room to fill out a bit more? It seem like a lefty with that kind of velocity would be more highly thought of.

Tyler's struggles come down to command. I like his slider quite a bit, his change is good in spurts, his FB sits in the low 90s but can touch the mid 90s. When he's on he's moving the ball around the zone, when he struggles he gets behind hitters and ends up in predictable FB counts. It's not like he's consistently high, left, right, or low, when he's missing he's just missing everywhere. He has a straighter FB, I haven't sat behind homeplate to see how much it moves, but it doesn't stand out from the CF camera like Ynoa's did for example.

As college closer he doesn't necessarily have the experience or mileage on his arm, I think he's still a work in progress from just a pitching point of view. I hold out hope for him, I don't see him as a potential top of the rotation guy, but I like him in the same way I liked Gagnon last year, a mid to back of the rotation guy in MLB.

He could always start outpitching his stuff like a Marcum and become a top of the rotation pitcher but I have a hard time going down that road for any pitcher as those over achievers are the exception to the rule.

My best guess today would be that as an MLB pitcher he'll show flashes but he'll never have the command to reach that #2 type status. If he doesn't cut it as a starter my gut feeling is that he'd make a pretty decent reliever. Though I will say that when Tyler is on he can be quite filthy, so I remain hopeful. Unfortunately we won't get to see him pitch again after this season until he hits AA, but the flip side is that it should be neat to see how far (hopefully) he's progressed.

Final: Kane County 6, Wisconsin 3

Late homers sink Rattlers

Cougars get back-to-back jacks in decisive eight inning rally

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers could not shake the Kane County Cougars on Wednesday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark and it cost them. Jeimer Candelario and Rock Shoulders hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Kane County to a 6-3 comeback win.

Wisconsin (44-59 overall, 15-23 second half) got on the scoreboard first. Orlando Arcia started the third inning with a single. Alfredo Rodriguez was next and he chopped a single through the right side of the infield. Arcia rounded second, but was going back to the bag when right fielder Reggie Golden overran the ball. Arcia took off for third and Golden's throw to third wound up in the stands. The two errors by Golden on the play allowed Arcia to score and Rodriguez to end up at third base. Lance Roenicke got Rodriguez home from third with a grounder to short for a 2-0 lead.

Rattlers starting pitcher Tyler Wagner went out for the bottom of the third inning and struck out the side in order on nine pitches. Wagner allowed one hit and struck out seven through his first five innings. But Kane County got to him in the sixth.

Gioskar Amaya started the inning with a double and an error on the play let him take third base. Albert Almora drive in Amaya with a grounder to short. Dan Vogelbach and Candelario singled to set up Shoulders. The Kane County first baseman blooped a single fair down the line in left to score Vogelbach with the tying run.

The teams traded runs in the seventh inning. Arcia singled to start the top of the inning and was on the run when Rodriguez sent a slow roller towards short. Candelario, the third baseman, cut the ball off and threw to first for the out on Rodriguez. Arcia saw that no one was covering third and took off for the extra base. Hernandez, the shortstop, raced to cover and was there to take the throw from Shoulders. But Hernandez missed the ball and Arcia scampered home for the run to put the Rattlers up 3-2.

Kane County (42-61, 12-25) responded in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Harvey Martin. Willson Contreras singled to start the frame. He stole second and went to third on a throwing error with one out and Amaya at the plate. The Timber Rattlers brought the infield in to cut down the run at the plate. Martin got Amaya to send a grounder to short, but the ball was bobbled to let Contreras score the tying run.

Martin walked Vogelbach to start the bottom of the eighth. Candelario followed with a two-run home run to right to put Kane County up 5-3. Shoulders was next and he launched his seventeenth home run of the season. The back-to-back blasts put Kane County up 6-3.

Chris McFarland singled with one out in the top of the ninth against Michael Hamann, but Hamann got a game-ending 1-6-3 double play to send the Rattlers to their third straight loss.

Wisconsin catcher Parker Berberet singled in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to fifteen games, the longest active streak in the Midwest League. Third baseman Mike Garza had a pair of singles and extended his hitting streak to ten games.

Game three of the series is Thursday night. Jorge Lopez (5-6, 5.31) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Tayler Scott (4-6, 4.33) is set to start for the Cougars. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

HOME RUNS:

Kane County:

Jeimer Candelario (7th, 1 on in 8th inning off Harvey Martin, 1 out)

Rock Shoulders (17th, 0 on in 8th inning off Harvey Martin, 1 out)

WP: Sheldon McDonald (1-0)

LP: Harvey Martin (1-2)

SAVE: Michael Hamann (4)

TIME: 2:19

ATTN: 5,198

Wisconsin Boxscore

The T-Rats out hit the Cougars but came up empty again, 2 of the 3 runs were basically gifted to them.

I already talked about Tyler Wagner above, obviously I like him quite a bit.

Once again the T-Rats went without an extra base hit, however Michael Garza, Chris McFarland, and Orlando Arcia all had 2 hits a piece.

Wisconsin Recap

Not many 1-2-3 innings for the Rattlers.

As per the thread title,

"Nickname-less Nelson and Ariel Speedwagon Go Tonight"

Surely Jimmy has a nickname among his teammates, it's just not commonly known, at least to me...

And also surely Pena has no idea about our band reference here.

As 'chris'-tened by Chris Narveson (iirc in ST 2012), Jimmy Nelson is "Downhill Thunder"

That's such a sweet nickname... surprised you either missed it or didn't remember it :)

Rattlers timber

Have you ever wondered where Wisconsin Timber Rattlers players get their bats?

Well, we did, so we posed the question to Travis Voss, the clubhouse manager for the Milwaukee Brewers’ Class-A affiliate. Here’s what he told us:

“The Brewers supply us with a bunch of generic Pro Stock bats for players that choose to use those,” Voss said. “Most of the guys seem to have their own bats that they order or get via their agents that are customized (length, weight, model). Agents will send those for free for them to use, or some guys, if they don’t have an agent, pay to get their own custom ones. Some guys will share or exchange bats.”

Occasionally, the Timber Rattlers players will benefit when a Brewers player makes a rehab assignment with the team.

“Here and there, some hand-me-down bats will make their way into the clubhouse, especially if a rehab player gets sent here,” Voss added. “(Carlos) Gomez last year gave quite a few bats to the guys to have to use.”

Mike Sherry of the Post-Crescent included that in his article on a local Appleton woodbat maker.

Final: Jupiter 11, Brevard County 2

Brevard hammered by Jupiter, 11-2

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

Manatees center fielder D'Vontrey Richardson, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 1-for-4 and drove in the first run of the game in Brevard County's 11-2 loss to the Jupiter Hammerheads on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Richardson extended his hitting streak to nine games. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

JUPITER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees allowed double-digit runs for the fourth time in their last ten games as they were defeated 11-2 by the Jupiter Hammerheads on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Stadium.

The Hammerheads roughed up Manatees (16-21 second half, 53-51 overall) starting pitcher Brent Suter (7-7, 3.44 ERA) with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jupiter (20-19, 56-51) started the frame with four consecutive hits that plated two runs before an out was even recorded.

Suter was able to retire Austin Barnes and Alex Burg back-to-back but then walked Alfredo Lopez to extend the inning. Yordy Cabrera then stepped to the plate and made the 'Tees pay as he singled to center to drive in two more runs to make it a 4-1 game.

Jupiter scored one more on a single by Ryan Goetz and it would have been six runs in the inning had Mitch Haniger not thrown out Cabrera at home to end the inning.

Suter's night would be done after five innings as he allowed nine hits and three walks to go along with the five runs. He also struck out five. Suter has struggled in his last two starts as he has allowed 12 runs on 21 hits in a combine ten innings of work.

Brevard County had broken the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth on a RBI single from D'Vontrey Richardson that scored Ben McMahan. Richardson's single extended his hitting streak to nine games.

Following the Hammerheads' big inning, the 'Tees could only plate one in the top of the sixth. Haniger led off with a single up the middle and then came around to score all the way from first on a double from Nick Ramirez.

The newest Manatee, Taylor Mangum, came on in relief of Suter and after a perfect sixth inning, he ran into trouble in the seventh.

Back-to-back one-out singles from Barnes and Burg put runners on the corners and after striking out Lopez, Mangum unleashed a wild pitch with Cabrera at the plate to allow Barnes to score.

Cabrera would come up with another big two-out hit as he doubled to left to plate Burg and make it a 7-2 game. Goetz then followed with a two-out RBI single to make it 8-2.

Dan Meadows came on in the eighth for the Manatees and after retiring the first two batters, he gave up a single and a walk to put two on with two out. Alex Burg then added even more insurance runs for Jupiter as he hit a three-run homer to left field.

Brevard County and Jupiter will close out their four-game set with the Manatees look to earn at least a split of the series on Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Jacob Barnes (6-5, 3.40) will get the ball for the Manatees, while Angel Sanchez (2-1, 2.25) will toe the rubber for the Hammerheads.

Brevard County Box Score

Nick Delmonico moved into the two-spot in the batting order and went 1-4. The only extra base hits for the Manatees tonight were doubles for Nick Ramirez and T.J. Mittelstaedt. D-Vo extended his hitting streak to nine games and added a stolen base.

Final: DSL Blue Jays 6, DSL Brewers 0

DSL Brewers Box Score

Another rather uninspiring performance from the DSL kids as they got shutout for the second straight game, this time against the Blue Jays. They managed just four hits. Juan Ortiz singled in the second. Gregory Munoz had a pair of hits with a single in the third and again in the sixth. Juan De Los Santos singled in the ninth. That was it for the Brewers offense. Joan De La Cruz was the starting pitcher. He went six innings, allowing two runs. Axel Cordero relieved him and pitched a clean seventh before getting hit around in the eighth. Boanerges Nova mopped up the eighth. The DSL site lists an R. Benoit as pitching the ninth inning. I'm not familiar with him (a recent signing perhaps?), but he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the Brewers.

DSL Brewers Play-By-Play

The 8th inning was an ugly one for the Brewers
