Audio from Omaha — “Mondays with Mike”

"Here is this week’s installment of “Mondays with Mike” with Sounds manager Mike Guerrero, who discusses the events of Sunday’s game when he fainted in the dugout before the second inning; how much the Sounds’ difficult season has worn him out; the addition of speedy, versatile infielder/outfielder Eugenio Velez and the impact Guerrero’s experience managing winter ball in the Dominican Republic can have on the Brewers; and how much the Sounds are ready to be done with Omaha for the year given the Storm Chasers’ stable of left-handed pitchers (8 of the 12 on their staff are southpaws)."

Gainey has been drilled by back to back ground balls. The first in the heel which ricocheted to Arcia whom smartly went to 3rd and got the lead runner. The second hit him in the right shoulder then he picked it up and threw wildly to first.

These weird plays have happened at TWC field in bunches all season going back to the 3 straight games where runners were hit by batted balls.

The T-Rats now have 4 errors in the game.

Lowery doesn't let Rattlers rally

Bees starter tosses complete game in 5-1 win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday afternoon to defeat the Burlington Bees 6-5. Wisconsin did not get a chance to repeat that feat on Monday night. Burlington starting pitcher Patrick Lowery took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth at Time Warner Cable Field at retired Wisconsin in order for the first complete game of his professional career.

Burlington (40-61 overall, 14-22 second half) scored first. Pedro Tiribio doubled to left with one out. Wade Hinkle doubled to center with two outs to drive in Tiribio for the 1-0 lead.

The Bees threatened in the top of the fourth. Exicardo Cayones tripled to start the inning. But, Rattlers starter Ryan Gibbard stranded Cayones at third by striking out the next two batters and getting the final out with a popup on the infield.

Lowery allowed one hit through 4-1/3 innings and had retired nine straight Wisconsin batters. Then, Garrett Cooper stepped to the plate with one out in the fifth. Cooper cracked a 2-1 pitch well over the left field wall for his first Midwest League home run. The solo shot tied the game 1-1.

Parker Berberet extended his hitting streak to thirteen games with a single and took second on an error immediately after the home run by Cooper. But, that would be it for the Wisconsin offense.

But, the Bees responded in the top of the sixth. Toribio singled with one out and stole second. He went to third on a throwing error. Wisconsin brought the infield in with Wade Hinkle at the plate. Cayones hit a hard one-hopper to the left of Chris McFarland at second. McFarland lunged for the ball and threw to the plate. But, the ball short-hopped the plate and bounced off the mask of catcher Parker Berberet. Toribio scored and Cayones took second base.

Hinkle was next and he lined a ball off the foot of Gibbard. Gibbard went to the ground as the ball rolled down the mound and onto the grass back toward the plate. Berberet charged out to field the ball, but that left the plate uncovered. Cayones broke for the plate from third base as Berberet retraced his steps. Gibbard limped after the ball and got to it, but flipped it high and to the backstop. Cayones scored and Hinkle wound up at second base.

Gibbard left the game in favor of Preston Gainey after the play. Zach Wright welcomed Gainey to the game with a two-run home run to the Bees bullpen. That put Burlington up 5-1.

Wisconsin (44-57, 15-21) couldn't get anything going against Lowery after the single by Berberet in the fifth inning. Lowery retired the final fourteen batters of the game to earn the complete game victory for the Bees. He allowed three hits, walked none, and struck out six for his fourth win of the season.

The Timber Rattlers begin a four game road trip to the Chicago suburbs on Tuesday night. Wisconsin takes on the Kane County Cougars in Geneva, Illinois. Eric Semmelhack (1-6, 5.44) is scheduled to start for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has not announced a starter for Tuesdays game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30pm. Tune for the radio broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

HOME RUNS:

BUR:

Zach Wright (1st, 1 on in 6th inning off Preston Gainey, 1 out)

WIS:

Garrett Cooper (1st, 0 on in 5th inning off Patrick Lowery, 1 out)

WP: Patrick Lowery (4-6)

LP: Ryan Gibbard (4-3)

TIME: 2:20

ATTN: 2,687

Wisconsin Boxscore

Mehring and I doubled up on thoughts again, but I'm not going to go back and edit my post as I'm wiped out.

Unfortunately all of WI's young players are slumping at the same time: Orlando Arcia, Chris McFarland, and Tyrone Taylor (who batted 1-3 tonight) are all hitting under .200 in their last 10 games. Mehring noted that young players routinely struggle at this point in their first full season, but I don't feel any better about it.

Pat Lowery who was drafted in the 21st round last year just mixed his pitches very well, he wasn't blowing hitters away or all that nasty in general. He just pounded the zone and only had 80 pitches going into the 9th, Arcia led off the 9th with a good AB which jumped his pitch count up, but he still pitched a complete game with just 95 total pitches. Lowery faced just 3 batters over the minimum.

Garrett Cooper's HR was just crushed.

Wisconsin Recap

I felt this was Gibbard's best sequence of the game. Williams actually fielded and bobbled the triple, not sure why Walla is named, though I guess they did almost collide.

Burlington Top of the 4th

  • Exicardo Cayones triples (1) on a line drive to right fielder Max Walla.
    Wade Hinkle strikes out swinging.
    Zach Wright strikes out swinging.
Garrett Cannizaro pops out to second baseman Christopher McFarland.

Brevard snaps season-high skid

Manatees catcher Cameron Garfield, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-5 and drove in the eventual game-winning run in Brevard County's 5-3 win over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.

JUPITER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees snapped a season-high five-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium.

After scoring nine runs and talling 15 hits on Sunday, the Manatees (16-19 second half, 53-49 overall) brought their bats with them in the series opener with the Hammerheads (18-19, 54-51) as they recorded 12 hits.

The 'Tees scored the first run of the game in the first inning on a Mitch Haniger ground out that plated Yadiel Rivera.

Brevard added two more in the second on back-to-back, two-out RBI hits as Ben McMahan's double and D'Vontrey Richardson's single gave the Manatees a 3-0 lead. The single for Richardson extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Manatees starting pitcher Tyler Cravy (3-1, 2.56 ERA) held the Hammerheads scoreless in his outing, but went just four innings. Cravy allowed three hits and three walks, while fanning two.

Matt Miller came on in the fifth and made the game interesting in his three innings of work. He allowed two hits, walked five and hit four batters but was able to escape the three frames with just two runs allowed.

Miller and the Manatees benefitted from two double plays in those three innings. The biggest came in the fifth with the bases loaded and no outs as Yordy Cabrera grounded into a 3-2-3 double play. The second came in the sixth as Ryan Goetz drew a lead-off walk and then Austin Nola grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.

The 'Tees came up big with two outs once again in the seventh as Nick Delmonico and Cameron Garfield both had two-out RBI singles to give Brevard County a 5-1 lead. Both Delmonico and Garfield had two hits each.

Tommy Toledo threw the final two frames and allowed an unearned run in the ninth, but with the tying run at the plate and one out, Ryan Goetz grounded into a 3-6-3 double play to end the game.

Brevard County and Jupiter will square off once again on Tuesday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Chad Pierce (5-4, 3.53) will toe the rubber for the 'Tees, while the Hammerheads will call on Jose Urena (9-6, 3.93) for the start.
