Detroit a Viable Trade Option for Rickie Weeks

Everyone knows the Tigers bullpen has struggled all season. Omar Infante (2B) just had a setback trying to return from injury.

Miguel Cabrera and Torii Hunter are banged up.

Detroit is in full "go for it" mode.

Could the Brewers potentially dangle a reliever and Weeks, getting Detroit to take most of his contract?

I realize it's uncommon for a team to trade a starting pitcher when they're in the hunt, but I'm still intrigued by Rick Porcello, who by all accounts, was on the trade block before the season. While his ERA is at 4.49, a majority of his other numbers are better than his career average, single-season career bests or both.

Weeks can play 2B. Infante can be a utility player that fills in at 3B, 2B and the OF. Weeks can supply some added power to the lineup. Fielder, I'm sure, would push hard to bring Weeks in.

I'm not going to pretend to know which reliever they'd like, how much they value their own guys or what a fair swap would be - in terms of money and/or players - but I figure some of the more in-tune individuals on this site could fill in the blanks.

I believe Detroit could be desperate enough to bite, ridding the Brewers of a sizable chunk of cash and returning a - what I see as - a decently priced, solid starting pitcher.

Any thoughts?

if the brewers trade Weeks THEY'LL be paying a good chunk of his contract, not the Tigers.

It's possible the Brewers might kick in significant salary, but Weeks is not so highly paid that a team that wants him will necessarily view his salary as a major issue. Money could easily change hands, but we are not talking albatross here. Detroit might also be quite receptive in a go for it year knowing the Weeks and Prince get along and there is already good chemistry there.

His performance is what's preventing a deal. The good news is he's certain to clear waivers so he can be dealt after the deadline. If somebody did claim him, then it would be bye, bye. The Brewers seem determined to keep putting him out there in hopes a little hot stretch will spark some interest.

If the Brewers want anything of value back, then they'd have to pay a large portion of his salary.

I don't see anything significant in return at the moment for Weeks from Detroit. The Brewers are better off sitting on him through this season and maybe go the trade route next deadline when his contract isn't a big issue(assuming the team keeps him down on 600PAs)

The only team I'd want to deal with is the Dodgers for Weeks since the money aspect likely doesn't matter and their prospects are better in depth.

I wouldn't assume the money wouldn't matter with the Dodgers. There comes a point when it matters for every team in every sport. The Yankees a team that makes more money than the Dodgers are cutting salary. The Lakers are wary of the luxury tax and trying to get below it, the Knicks payroll was out of control a few years ago.

Just because they spent a lot to get to where they are now doesn't mean they'll view Weeks and the remaining 20 million they'd have to pay him next year, and the potential 23 million or whatever they'd have to pay him if he reached the option with the luxury tax.

They bought the team last year, they spent a ton of money. I don't think it's wise to assume that they'll just continue to spend money.

Not to mention everyone is in awe of their TV deal(which is huge) but 3.4 billion of that goes into MLB's revenue sharing and gets divided up(at least that's the last number I saw...MLB was negotiating with the Dodgers based on how much they had to pay to buy the team vs it's valuation, it's debts..etc..etc..I think they settled on 3.4, but I don't know. It's a unique situation).

In fact, I have a feeling the Dodgers and their owners who paid way more than the franchised was worth according to most evaluations are going to get sick of paying 30-40 million in luxury taxes.

Royals have apparently inquired on Weeks. If any organization is dumb enough to want Weeks the Royal would probably be it.

I would trade Weeks for whatever I could get and even then Doug would almost certainly have to pay a portion of the salary

Does Dayton Moore still run the Royals? If so, that makes perfect sense.

I'm not sure why anyone would trade for someone with Weeks' numbers right now. Oh PS he makes $11 million dollars to be average-at-best. Bonus.

Weeks had an amazing June, and has been terrible the rest of this season. You trade him for anything you can get if someone is seriously inquiring.

I'm guessing the front office is still fooled by the Weeks "mystique" if there is such a thing for the Brewers.

I don't think the front office is fooled, so much as it's following a pattern for guys making similar money. Suppan was given one last chance to show he had any value in the final year of his deal before he was cut loose in May. Wolf had a little longer leash as he had some recent productivity, but he was let go in August of his final year.

I figure Weeks has between now and Memorial Day (around 100 games) next year to show he's worth keeping beyond that. If he finishes this year around .220, and then isn't up in the .250 range for the first 7 weeks next year, he'll be gone and they'll eat the rest.
