White Sox Reportedly Turn Down Carlos Martinez for Alexei Ramirez

This is why you should never believe a team wouldn't trade a top prospect, and it's also why someone with the White Sox needs a Designated Driver.

Alexei Ramirez is about to turn 32, he's signed for two more years, at 22M total, with an option year for 10M, or a 1M buyout. In other words, he's exactly the kind of guy you offer for young talent when you're rebuilding.

Keeping Ramirez in Chicago, is like the argument for the Brewers dealing Kyle Lohse...even if he does well, the team is not likely to contend while he's here.

Martinez is currently listed by Prospect Watch as the number 27 prospect in baseball, and at worst, he's top 40. If you can get a young arm like that for your 30-something shortstop, in the White Sox' situation...you do it.

Maybe there's more to this than meets the eye, but just on it's face, Chicago not taking Martinez from the Cardinals doesn't make any sense.

I think we're WAY too quick to do this. Look at a scouting ranking(though it's fun for the less informed and I say that as compared to people actually scouting these players professionally) is one thing, but perhaps the White Sox aren't sold on Martinez. His prospect ranking meter is pointing downward(though still VERY good and I'd LOVE to have him by the way) as he was a top 5 prospect IIRC last year when BA did their mid-season update and now he came into this season ranked 38th by BA after being ranked 27th to start last season? Maybe something is going on they don't like.

I agree with you, given the numbers you laid out and the facts we have, in a fantasy world, I'd be thrilled if my team made that trade...today. Maybe not 2 years from now. It's also possible that the writer didn't get the whole story as he started that the trade "revolved around," Martinez. Maybe the Cards wanted Peavy+Ramirez plus something.

I sure would love to be in the Cards position right now having a good, relatively young big league team and 3 prospects probably ranked ahead of Carlos Martinez right now.

It's been debunked that Martinez was turned down for Ramirez.

I would think it foolish if STL. actually offered Martinez for slap hitting Ramirez. The guy can't OPS over .700 and you would give up a SP with #2 potential for that? NO WAY. Beside Ramirez inability at the plate and aging he's under contract for through 2015. I mean really if Ramirez can return Martinez for what he's making then COME ON!! on the Lohse has no value arguments! For the price and age to production? Ramirez will be Alex Gonzalez in value in no time.

Alexei was a good 2nd tier SS when he was hitting 12-15 HR per year. He's hit 1 this year. In fact his drop off in power seems awfully suspicious. He's also not cheap. I can't imagine the Sox turning down the deal. They might be holding out for a position player. They have decent young pitching.
