Link Report for Tue. 7/23

Final: Huntsville 6 Tennessee 4

The Huntsville Stars grabbed a 6-0 lead, then hung on to win 6-4 Tuesday night at The Joe. Stars starter Drew Gagnon cruised through 5 innings tonight before running into trouble in the 6th and 7th before departing. Gagnon (3-5, 5.67) worked 6 1/3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3. One of the hits allowed was a long, 2 run home run from Cubs top prospect Javier Baez. Gagnon threw 77 pitches, 55 for strikes and posted a 6-6 GO/FO ratio.

After Gagnon got into some trouble in the 7th, right hander Kevin Shackelford was called upon to get out of the inning. He did just that and then worked a scoreless 8th as well. Shackelford's line was 1 2/3 innings, no runs, no hits, no walks and 2 strike outs. Since being promoted, Shackelford has pitched in 6 games, for a total of 8 1/3 innings and has only allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8. Very impressive. Primarily a catcher in college, Shackelford has a "young" arm in terms of innings pitched. Still learning, but impressing along the way. Lefty Brent Leach pitched a scoreless 9th, racking up 2 strike outs, to earn his first save in a Stars uniform.

Huntsville Box Score

Huntsville knocked out 9 hits tonight, 4 came from right fielder Rene Tosoni. Tosoni went 4-4, all singles, with a run scored and an RBI. He is the 4th Stars hitter to have 4 hits in a game this season. Brock Kjeldgaard and Adam Weisenburger each homered for Huntsville. For Kjeldgaard, it was his team leading 15th on the season. It was a 2 out, 3 run shot in the 5th which provided the winning margin for the Stars. First baseman Jason Rogers had the only other extra base hit, a 2 out run scoring double in the first, to give the Stars a lead they would not give up. Joey Paciorek also singled and Chadwin Stang had a single, drew a walk and stole a base. Second baseman Shea Vucinich didn't record a hit, but did draw 2 walks and scored a run.

Hard to take that list seriously, with where they have Jungmann & Bradley.

But still, I find it a bit hard to believe that Delmonico wouldn't slot into the top 5 of any objective Brewers system ranking. What a great return for 2+ months of a reliever. Doug Melvin is definitely 2-2 on his last two trades.

That list is just terrible. Nelson at 8? Taylor at 13?

Final: Brevard County 10, Fort Myers 4

Manatees halt skid with 10-4 win over Miracle

Brevard's offense and bullpen comes up big in blowout of Fort Myers

VIERA, Fla. - A strong performance from the bullpen was matched by a strong performance from the offense as the Brevard County Manatees snapped a three-game losing streak with a 10-4 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Brevard County (15-14 overall, 52-44 second half) starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta (0-4, 6.57 ERA) was unable to make it through the top of the first inning as he walked four men and allowed a two-run single to Matt Koch, while recording just two outs. A brigade of Manatees' relievers stepped up and held one of the best offenses in the Florida State League to just two runs over the final 8.1 frames.

With the bullpen taking charge for most of the game, the offense took Scarpetta off the hook for the loss by putting up four runs on five singles and a fielder's choice in the fourth inning.

Mitch Haniger homered for the second consecutive night as his two-run shot in the fifth extending Brevard's lead to 6-2.

Mark Williams earned the win in his longest outing of the season as he tossed 4.1 scoreless innings in relief. He escaped a bases loaded situation when he came on in the top of the first and then allowed just three hits until Matt Miller came on in the sixth.

Miller surrendered a triple to Byron Buxton, with Buxton scoring on a wild pitch for Miller's only run allowed in two innings. Miller fanned two and surrendered two hits.

Santo Manzanillo worked himself into and out of trouble, with a trio of singles loading the bases before he rolled a double play ball to end the inning and leave two runners in scoring position.

Up 6-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Brevard County batted around in the inning as they posted four more runs on five singles and two walks to take a 10-3 lead.

The only other Fort Myers (15-15, 60-37) run came on a solo homer off the bat of Buxton against Tommy Toledo in the top of the ninth. In a combine 8.1 innings from the bullpen, no walks were issued.

Offensively, eight different Manatees recorded at least one base hit, with all nine men reaching base. Haniger, Nick Ramirez and Greg Hopkins each crossed the plate twice, while D'Vontrey Richardson, Haniger and Hopkins were all credited with two RBI each. Five hitters had two-hit games, as the 'Tees tallied 13 hits on the night.

The Manatees and the Miracle will play the final contest in the season series on Wednesday night. A win for Brevard County would give the club a tie in the current four-game series and a season series win after taking both games played in Fort Myers in June.

Tyler Cravy (3-1, 2.98) will look to continue a particularly impressive stretch on the mound when he takes the ball at 6:35 p.m. against Miguel Soliman (1-4, 7.46).

Since the All-Star break, Cravy is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in seven appearances with three of those outings being starts.

Final: @Ogden 8, Helena 6

Helena box score

The Brewers entered the 7th down 4-0, but a four-running inning temporarily tied things up before they immediately allowed a four-running bottom half to the Raptors. Two in the 9th were enough to make it close, but that's it; the loss snapped a four-game win streak for the H-Crew.

Anthony Banda started and struggled, posting a K/HR ratio of 0/3 (I just made that stat up; here's an alternative I like: "Banda posted a K - HR of -3"). I told Trevor Seidenberger that it couldn't get worse after allowing seven runs in 1.1 innings in his pro debut, but he's clearly the competitive type and tried to prove me wrong, this time surrendering four runs in one inning; it's entirely possible that if he was allowed to come back out for the 8th he could have topped (bottomed?) his previous effort.

Backup catcher Michael Turay had a nice game, on base three times including a three-run homer. Ruben Ozuna had two hits, including a triple.

Sounds Fall To 'Topes, 4-2

Nashville's Josh Prince Hits Ninth Home Run In Losing Effort

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds were edged 4-2 by the Albuquerque Isotopes, who plated three late runs late in Tuesday night's game at Greer Stadium.

Tied 2-2 in the seventh, Albuquerque's Dee Gordon knocked an RBI single into left field to give the 'Topes a one-run advantage. The run came against Sounds reliever Zack Kroenke (4-13), who took the loss after 1 1/3 innings pitched.

Albuquerque added to its lead in the following inning when Alex Castellanos hit a solo home run off the guitar scoreboard in left field. The jack was the right fielder's 16th of the season and only the fourth allowed by Kyle Heckathorn this season.

The Sounds scored first in the game when catcher Blake Lalli scored from third on a strikeout wild pitch in the second inning. Lalli singled to reach base, moved to second on a walk issued to Cole Garner, and got to third on a passed ball.

Albuquerque leveled the game in the top of the third with Elian Herrera's RBI-single down the right-field line, which scored Damaso Espino; but the Sounds regained the lead when Josh Prince hit his ninth home run of the season. The shot was a solo homer to left-center field that put the Sounds up 2-1 in the fifth inning.

In the sixth inning, the 'Topes scored a controversial run without recording a hit in the frame. Castellanos was hit by a pitch to start the inning and stole second before Sounds third baseman Robinzon Diaz committed two errors that allowed Castellanos the game-tying run.

On the play, Justin Sellers hit a soft line drive that deflected off Diaz's glove for the first error, which led the defender into the base paths with Castellanos running from second base. Diaz tried to hold up, but third base umpire Gerard Asana ruled that Diaz interfered with the runner's progress and charged him with his second error and allow the runner an extra base.

Sounds starting pitcher R.J. Seidel limited the Isotopes to two runs, one earned, on five hits across 5 2/3 innings of work. The righty fired nine strikeouts to match a career-high, having also fanned nine batters on May 25, also against Albuquerque.

Reliever Michael Olmsted pitched a scoreless ninth inning, but loaded the bases on a single and three walks before recording the final out.

Isotopes' starter Jonathan Sanchez (3-1) picked up the win, holding Nashville to two runs on three hits over six innings of work. Reliever Jay Guerra picked up the save, his sixth.

The Sounds will look to retake the series lead Wednesday night at Greer Stadium against the Albuquerque Isotopes. Throwing for Nashville in game one will be lefty Aaron Laffey (4-4, 5.50) opposite the Isotopes' RHP Matt Magill (2-0, 2.90). The night will be a Great Clips #WebWednesday, where fans can receive ticket specials via the Sounds social media platforms.

Maryvale falls, 7-5

Strong game for SS Tucker Neuhaus; we may need to temper the over-the-top Gian Rizzo enthusiasm (still someone to follow, looks to have gotten too much of the plate last night - 9 H, 0 BB).

More detailed report later today, but early-reading Link Reporters, feel free to cover this one, thanks.

Any insights into how Seidel has increased his K rate so much this season? His K/BB rate is great and would seemingly get one quite interested yet his HR rate has also ballooned this year over previous just a PCL fluke?

I'm not all that excited about Delmonico but he's about as good as we could hope for when trading a single reliever with no service time past this season.
