Final: Huntsville 10 Pensacola 5

Welcome back Jason Rogers. Rogers, who missed 3 games and the All Star game with an upper body injury, powered the Stars past the Blue Wahoos on Saturday night. His performance help offset an off night from Stars starter Taylor Jungmann. For only the 2nd time all season, Jungmann didn't get a decision in a game he started. Taylor only worked 4 innings tonight, allowing 4 runs on 9 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. It took Jungmann 79 pitchers, 42 strikes, to cover those 4 innings. Taylor did post a good 6-2 GO/FO ratio.

Jungmann was backed up tonight by David Goforth. Goforth, who has been moved to the bullpen now, came into the game with a streak of 14 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball. He added 3 more tonight. Goforth (4-1, 2.81) picked up the win working 3 scoreless innings, allowing only 1 hit, 1 walk, and one hit batter while striking out 2. David also had a 5-0 GO/FO ratio and of his 33 pitches, 21 were for strikes. He continues to improve and impress. Lefty Brent Leach worked a scoreless 8th inning despite allowing 2 hits. Canton, Ohio's Eric Marzec worked the 9th. He allowed an unearned run on 2 hits while striking out 1. The error that led to the run was his own, a throwing error after taking a lined shot to the back. Eric stayed in the game and finished off the Blue Wahoos.

Huntsville Box Score

Jason Rogers's huge night led the Stars offense. Rogers ended the night going 4-5 with 3 runs scored, 3 home runs, and 6 RBI's. It was the first 3 home run game by a Stars player since Peter Zoccolillo accomplished it back in 2002. Rogers hadn't homered since May 27th before blasting 3 into the bay tonight. The 3 home runs gives him 13 on the season which puts him 1 behind Brock Kjeldgaard for the team lead and tied for 5th in the Southern League. The 6 RBI's gives him 59 on the season and that puts him on top in the Southern League. Nice game Bones!

Rogers wasn't the only Stars hitter to have a strong night. The Stars knocked out 17 hits as every starter recorded a hit tonight. Second baseman Nick Shaw went 3-4 with a triple, 2 runs scored, an RBI, and a sacrifice. Chadwin Stang went 2-5 with 2 runs scored. He now has a modest 5 game hitting streak going. Mike Walker also went 2-5 with a double and a run scored. Shortstop Hector Gomez was 2-4, both hits being singles. Catcher Adam Weisenburger legged out his first triple on the season, scored a run, drove one in and drew a walk. Left fielder Eric Patterson was 1-3 with a walk, drove in a run, and stole a base. Rene Tosoni went 1-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Shea Vucinich had an at bat tonight as a pinch hitter and he also singled.

Team RISP: 4-for-8.

Team LOB: 5.

It wasn't all good play tonight:

Giacalone, after a night off, continued his assault on the Pioneer League with three hits, including the homer, and a walk. He's hitting .550. Taylor Brennan also homered, his second straight game going deep. Michael Ratterree's three-game homer streak came to an end but he stayed hot, reaching in five of his six plate appearances.

Starter Brandon Moore joined Poppe in having a poor game, allowing five runs in three innings. In between the two, though, Eduard Reyes had another nice outing with three scoreless, hitless innings.

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Garrett Cooper is about to score on a single by Orlando Arcia in the sixth inning at Dayton on July 20, 2013.

DAYTON, OH - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored three runs in the first inning at Fifth Third Field and never looked back. Tyler Wagner and Harvey Martin held the Dayton Dragons to a pair of runs as Wisconsin snapped a three-game losing streak with a 6-2 win.

Wisconsin (41-52 overall, 12-16 second half) grabbed the lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Michael Reed tripled with one out and Tyrone Taylor was hit by a pitch. Victor Roache was at the plate and Dayton starting pitcher Amir Garrett uncorked a wild pitch to let Reed score and send Taylor to second. Roache followed with an RBI single to left to drive in Taylor. Garrett threw another wild pitch to send Roache to second, walked Garrett Cooper, and threw a third wild pitch in the inning to put runners on second and third. Mike Garza drove in Roache with a grounder to the right side and the Rattlers were up 3-0.

Dayton (43-55, 15-14) got a run Tyler Wagner in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tanner Rahier homered to left-center to lead off the inning and cut Wisconsin's lead to 3-1. Adam Matthews followed with a walk. Beau Amaral would single with one out to put the tying runs on base. But, Wagner ended the rally by getting Sammy Diaz to ground into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play. That put Wagner in line for his eighth win of the season.

The Rattlers added to their lead in the top of the sixth. Garrett Cooper reached on an error with one out and was still at first base with two away. Parker Berberet kept the inning going with a single to left. Orlando Arica followed with a single up the middle and the Rattlers were up 4-1. Chris McFarland made it 5-1 with a double to right-center that scored Berberet.

Martin took over for Wagner in the bottom of the sixth. He allowed a walk and a single with one out in the sixth, but got out of the inning with a strikeout and a grounder to first. Martin would set down the side in order in the seventh and ran his streak of consecutive Dragons retired to seven as he got the first two outs of the eighth. But, Seth Mejias-Brean drilled a home run to the bleachers with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to get Dayton to within 5-2.

Wisconsin added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. McFarland reached on an error and stole second. Alfredo Rodriguez sacrificed McFarland to third. A wild pitch let McFarland score to put the Rattlers up 6-2.

Martin tossed a scoreless ninth to lock down his first professional save and the win for Wisconsin. Martin struck out five, walked one, and gave up one run on three hits over four innings.

Game two of the series at Fifth Third Field continues on Sunday afternoon. Jorge Lopez (4-6, 5.43) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Dayton sends Drew Cisco (3-5, 3.61) to the mound. Game time is 1:00pm CDT. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:40pm. Nashville Starter Logs Six Shutout Innings For Eighth Victory

Nashville Sounds

(Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

METAIRIE, La. - The Nashville Sounds topped the New Orleans Zephyrs Saturday night at Zephyr Field by a 8-5 margin, guided by Johnny Hellweg's impressive return start and offensive fireworks from Robinzon Diaz.

Hellweg (8-4) made his first start for Nashville since June 22 a good one, logging six innings of shutout baseball for his eighth quality start of the season. The 6-foot-9 hurler limited the Z's to two hits on a team season-high 108 pitches, walking four and striking out six.

The victory is Hellweg's eighth and his seventh consecutive, the longest such streak by a Sounds pitcher this season, stretching back to his May 16 outing against Salt Lake City. Hellweg's has not allowed a run over his last 13 PCL innings.

Offensively, the Sounds scored first in the game using three hits and a walk in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Zephyrs. Outfielder Khris Davis reached base with a single and scored on Anderson De La Rosa's base knock into right-center field. Following a wild pitch that moved De La Rosa to second, Cole Garner hit into shallow centerfield for an RBI.

De La Rosa, 2-for-5, added to the Sounds lead with a double into left field which scored Hunter Morris from second.

In the following inning, third baseman Robinzon Diaz doubled the Sounds' lead with one swing of the bat, connecting for a home run to centerfield to make it 6-0. The homer scored Josh Prince and Scooter Gennett, who both singled to start the fifth.

The Z's picked up a pair of runs with two outs in the seventh inning. Reliever Travis Webb walked Kyle Jensen and then allowed an RBI-double to Gorkys Hernandez. Tim Dillard entered to pick up the final out, but not before Chris Valaika hit a double down the left-field line to make it 6-2.

The Sounds took back their six-run lead in the ninth inning with a two-run double from Kentrail Davis that scored Gennett, 2-for-5, and Hainley Statia, 1-for-1.

Zach Kroenke, Michael Olmsted and Rob Wooten also saw work on the hill for Nashville. Kroenke worked a scoreless eighth inning, before giving way to Olmsted, who let up a three-run homer in the ninth to Hernandez. Wooten entered with one out in the ninth to finish the game.

New Orleans' Duane Below (5-4) was charged with the loss, allowing Nashville three runs on five hits over four innings of work.

The Sounds will look to win the four-game series with New Orleans Sunday night at Zephyr Field. Throwing for Nashville will be RHP Jimmy Nelson (1-3, 3.62) opposite the Z's RHP Jay Jackson (1-0, 0.00). Baseball returns to Nashville on Monday, July 22, for Peanut Free Night at Greer, presented by the Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center.

Rogers, Offense Carries Stars to Win

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

After scoring just four combined runs in the last two nights, the Huntsville Stars offense broke out with a season-high 17 hits en route to a 10-5 victory over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Saturday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

Despite the high score totals, the offensive barrage didn't start until the fourth inning where the Stars offense began to break out against Pensacola starting pitcher Tim Crabbe.

With second baseman Nick Shaw on first after a one-out single, a two-run homer from first baseman Jason Rogers just crept over the left-field wall to put the Stars on the board. Later in the inning, an RBI triple from catcher Adam Weisenburger and an RBI single from outfielder Eric Patterson put the Stars up 4-0.

Unfortunately for Huntsville, that lead would be short-lived. In the bottom half of the fourth inning, Pensacola tied up the game with four runs of their own off of Stars starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann. The inning was highlighted by an RBI double from outfielder Corey Wimberly and RBI singles from outfielder Yorman Rodriguez and shortstop Devin Lohman. A throwing error by Jungmann on the single from Lohman allowed the final run of the inning to score for Pensacola.

From that point on, the rest of the game belonged to the Stars and Rogers. In addition to his fourth inning two-run home run, the 25-year-old came through with a solo homer in the sixth inning, RBI single in the seventh inning and another two-run homer in the ninth inning. Overall, he was 4-for-5 on the night with three homers and six runs batted in.

Rogers is the first Stars player since Pete Zoccolillo in 2002 to hit three homers in one game. He is the third player in Huntsville history to reach the milestone (Zoccolillo, Jose Canseco). Prior to Saturday, Rogers had not homered since May 27 against Tennessee, a span of seven weeks.

Huntsville got an RBI triple from Shaw and an RBI single from Rene Tosoni to account for their other runs in the ninth inning. The Stars offense out-scored Pensacola 6-1 in the final four innings of the game to help them cruise to victory. Out of their season-high 17 hits, every slot in the Stars lineup (1-9) had at least one hit.

Aside from Rogers, the Stars were paced by three hits from Shaw and two hits from both outfielder Chadwin Stang and third baseman Mike Walker. The two-hit night for Stang was his second in as many nights.

On the pitching side, Jungmann was tabbed with his second straight no-decision, giving up four runs on seven hits in four innings. Earning the win for Huntsville was righty David Goforth as he blanked the Pensacola bats through three innings to improve to 4-1 on the season in his first relief appearance with the Stars.

Dating back to his previous two starts, Goforth has not given up a run in his last 17 innings pitched.

The win for the Stars was their third straight in Pensacola and clinched a series victory against the Blue Wahoos. Huntsville has now won four of their last five games and owns a 10-6 record during the month of July.

On Sunday, the Stars will play game four of a five-game series at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. Huntsville will send RHP Ariel Pena (5-7, 3.47 ERA) to the bump while Pensacola will counter with RHP Josh Smith (7-8, 3.72). First pitch is at 4 PM.

Stars' Rogers homers three times

Brewers prospect ends drought with record-tying effort

By Brandon Simes / MiLB.com

Jason Rogers took the Southern League lead in RBIs Saturday night. (Mike Janes/Four Seam Images)

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/6/4/54237664/cuts/rogers_84k0nwsh_0oa545m1.jpg

It had been 40 days and 40 nights without a home run for Jason Rogers, but the Huntsville first baseman opened the floodgates Saturday night.

Rogers became the third player in team history to record a three-homer game, establishing career highs with four hits and six RBIs in the Stars' 10-5 win over Pensacola at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

"It felt good. It's the first time I've ever hit three home runs -- in pro ball, college or anything," the Brewers prospect said.

Rogers started the night inauspiciously, striking out to lead off the second inning and making it 144 at-bats since he hit his last home run on May 27 against Tennessee.

"The guys were talking about [the home run drought] in batting practice. We talk about it all the time," he said. "They were wondering about when I was going to hit one."

The drought ended in the fourth when Rogers launched a two-run shot over the left-field fence off Blue Wahoos starter Tim Crabbe. The 6-foot-2 right-handed batter blasted a solo homer to the same spot leading off the sixth against 7'1" reliever Loek Van Mil, mixed in an RBI single in the seventh and ended his night with another two-run blast to left in the ninth off Trevor Bell.

The 25-year-old went 4-for-5 and is 9-for-16 over his last five games. The recent success has been a nice change of pace for Rogers, who posted a .384 OPS in June after notching a .904 OPS with eight home runs in May.

"My timing was off, I wasn't getting my foot down, fatigue set in a little bit, there was a lack of concentration here and there, and I wasn't really seeing the ball," Rogers said. "Now I'm trying to really see the ball, get the foot down."

A slightly strained left oblique muscle -- which he said hasn't fully healed -- cost the first baseman an appearance in the Southern League All-Star Game. The silver lining turned out to be almost a full week off and "no swings for two or three days," according to Rogers.

"I spent a lot of time with my family, with my wife. She was treating me, helping me out. I got a lot of treatment, me and the trainer [Steve Patera] did a lot of work," he said.

The Georgia native joined Jose Canseco (June 24, 1985) and Pete Zoccolillo (Aug. 23, 2002) as the only Stars to hit three homers in a game.

"It's an honor," Rogers said. "[Canseco] was a big leaguer, I'm trying to get there."

History note - Pete was, too! - MH

Rogers leads the league with 59 RBIs and moved into a tie for fifth with 13 homers, three behind Jacksonville's Kyle Jensen.

"I should have a lot more [RBIs], I left a lot of guys on base," he said. "Guys have been getting on for me, I should have driven them in."

David Goforth (4-1) earned the win by allowing a hit and striking out a pair over three innings in his first relief appearance of the season. Brewers top prospect Taylor Jungmann started for Huntsville and gave up four runs on nine hits in four innings.
