Final: DSL Brewers 14, DSL Blue Jays 5

The Dominican kids may have played as few as one or as many as three games today, with the rain makeup from July 8th, the conclusion of yesterday's game and today's regularly scheduled game on the docket. There was also more rain in the forecast so I'm not sure if they got them all in, but will update as the box scores get posted. Here is the makeup from July 8th.

DSL Brewers Box Score

Nice to see an offensive outburst from this team. 14 runs on 16 hits and every player in the lineup had at least one base hit. Jorge Quiterio led the offense, going 3-for-6. Right fielder Yerald Martinez went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI. Designated hitter Juan De Los Santos knocked in four runs as part of a 2-for-4 day. He reached base three times in all with a single, triple and a walk. Juan Ortiz recorded an outfield assist, went 2-for-4 with a double, and stole a base before being replaced in the 6th inning. May be something to keep an eye on. Gregory Munoz went 2-for-5 with a double. Juan De Leon, Yunior Santana and Daniel Leonardo each singled and walked once. Leudi Otano and Raphachel Colatosti each chipped in one base hit.

Pedro Peguero started and went two innings. He gave up two runs, one earned, on just one hit, but walked five batters. Victor Diaz took over in the third and worked five innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out six and got the win. Boanerges Nova pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Final: St. Lucie 3, Brevard County 1

'Tees bats held in check by Mets

Brevard falls 3-1 to St. Lucie despite solid start by Bradley

By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees

Manatees starting pitcher Jed Bradley, seen here in a game from earlier this season, allowed just one run in five innings on Friday night against the St. Lucie Mets at Tradition Field. PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A strong pitching performance from starting pitcher Jed Bradley was not enough for the Brevard County Manatees as they fell 3-1 to the St. Lucie Mets at Tradition Field on Friday night.

Bradley (4-4, 4.14 ERA) allowed just one run, which came in the first inning, on two hits over five innings. The Brevard County (14-12 second half, 51-42 overall) lefty walked a batter and fanned two.

Jayce Boyd drove in the first run of the game on a ground out to second base that plated Kyle Johnson, who smacked a leadoff double in the first inning.

The 1-0 St. Lucie (15-11, 52-41) lead would hold up all the way into the seventh. Kevin Plawecki delivered an RBI single against Alex Moore to double the Mets lead. Moore, who had pitched a scoreless sixth, allowed just the one run on three hits in 1.1 innings.

After Santo Manzanillo allowed a run in the eighth on a Dustin Lawley sacrifice fly, St. Lucie led 3-0 heading into the ninth.

The 'Tees had one final chance in the top of the ninth and it started with Greg Hopkins reached on a fielding error by shortstop Matt Reynolds to lead off the frame. Hopkins would advance on a wild pitch before Ben McMahan and Lance Roenicke each grounded out to third.

Rafael Neda then hit a slow chopper to short that Reynolds was unable to handle which resulted in the first run of the game for the Manatees, as Hopkins scored. The tying run then stepped to the plate in the form of Brandon Macias, but T.J. Chism struck out Macias to end the game.

St. Lucie starter Alex Panteliodis hurled seven shutout innings as he scattered four hits on the night and escaped a bases loaded, two-out jam in the second. The southpaw struck out seven 'Tees on the evening.

McMahan provided the only multi-hit game for the Manatees as he went 2-for-4 with a double, which was also Brevard's only extra-base hit, to dead center field. Brevard County was held to just five hits total.

The Mets and the Manatees will wrap up their four-game series and season series on Saturday night in Port St. Lucie, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Lefty Brent Suter (7-5, 2.79 ERA) will toe the rubber for Brevard County. He will be opposed by Michael Fulmer (0-1, 4.50 ERA), who will make just his third start of the season for St. Lucie.

Brevard County Box Score

Jed Bradley had a solid outing in only giving up 2 hits and 1 walk in 5.0 innings. He forced 9 ground outs compared to only 1 fly out. Unfortunately he only recorded 2 strikeouts which isn't going to help his K/9 which was 6.9 this season coming into the game.

Rattlers get shutout in Bowling Green

Hot Rods complete the sweep with a 7-0 win over Wisconsin

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BOWLING GREEN, KY - The Bowling Green Hot Rods completed their three game sweep of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Bowling Green Ballpark with a 7-0 win on Friday night. Reinaldo Lopez tossed seven innings and was backed up by a thirteen hit attack by his offense.

Bowling Green (57-39 overall, 19-9 second half) scored first for the third straight game in the series. Andrew Toles tripled to start the bottom of the first. Tyler Goeddel grounded out to short to drive in Toles for a 1-0 lead. The Hot Rods added to their lead in the second inning. Joey Rickard doubled to start the inning. Patrick Leonard followed with an RBI double. Later in the inning, a sacrifice fly by Tommy Coyle drove in Leonard and Bowling Green was up 3-0.

Goeddel tripled in a run in the bottom of the fourth and scored on a single by Luke Maile to make the score 5-0. That single by Maile knocked Wisconsin starting pitcher Eric Semmelhack out of the game. Semmelhack allowed five runs on eight hits with three walks in 3-1/3 innings.

The Rattlers (40-52, 11-16) had plenty of chances in the first half of the game against Lopez.

Alfredo Rodriguez started the game with a single. But he was doubled off first after Michael Reed lined out to second base. In the third inning, Tyler Roberts lead off the inning with a single. Adrian Williams hit a line drive to third. Goeddel snared it and fired to first to double off Roberts. In the fourth. Reed was on third and Tyrone Taylor was on first with no outs. But, Reed was picked off third on a snap throw by catcher Justin O'Conner.

Wisconsin loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth. Garrett Cooper drew a walk, Roberts was hit by a pitch, and Williams singled to left. Rodriguez stepped in and lined a 1-0 pitch right at Goeddel, who caught the ball and fired to second to double Roberts off second base to end the inning.

Reed would double to start the sixth inning, but would be left stranded as Lopez retired the next three batters of the sixth.

Lopez scattered eight hits over seven innings and struck out five in the game to earn his fifth win of the season.

Bowling Green put the game away in the bottom of the seventh. Justin O'Conner homered off Rodolfo Fernandez to lead off the inning. The final tally of the game crossed the plate when Fernandez balked with runners at the corners to let the runner from third cross the plate for a 7-0 cushion.

Stone Speer entered the game for the Hot Rods in the top of the eighth and retired the side in order in that inning and again in the ninth to complete the shutout. It was the first time the Timber Rattlers have been shutout since May 29 of this season when Beloit beat them 3-0 at Pohlman Field.

Taylor and Reed both had a pair of hits to lead Wisconsin's offense.

The Timber Rattlers continue their road trip with game one of a three game series against the Dayton Dragons, the Midwest League affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, at Fifth Third Field in Dayton, Ohio. Wisconsin sends Tyler Wagner (7-7, 3.70) to the hill as the starting pitcher. Amir Garrett will be making his Midwest League debut on Saturday when he is the starting pitcher for the Dragons. Garrett had been 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA in five starts for the Billings Mustangs of the Pioneer League before getting the bump to Dayton.

Final: Huntsville 3 Pensacola 2

The Huntsville Stars jumped out to a 3-0 lead and then hung on to defeat the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 3-2 Friday night in Pensacola, Florida. Starter Brooks Hall (0-3, 5.76) was sharp, working 4 innings tonight. Hall, on a pitch count as most pitchers are, took a no decision as he allowed 1 run over those 4 innings on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 1. Hall delivered 40 strikes among his 59 pitches tonight and posted a magnificent 8-0 ground out to fly out ratio. After a couple shaky outings early on, Hall has started to develop confidence and his last 3 outings have been very good.

The Stars bullpen worked 5 strong innings to secure the win tonight. Casey Medlen (3-4, 4.08) worked the 5th an 6th innings. He allowed a run on 2 hits, 1 walk, and 2 hit batters, and in the process, earned the win. Frankie De La Cruz worked 2 scoreless innings out of the Stars bullpen tonight. He allowed a hit and 2 walks while striking out 4. Righty Kevin Shackelford worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his 2nd save on the season.

The Huntsville offense pounded out 10 hits, drew 4 walks, and Brock Kjeldgaard was hit by a pitch for the 9th time this season but they were only able to scratch out 3 runs. 3 of the 10 hits belonged to catcher Shawn Zarraga. Zarraga, who hadn't started a game since July 5th, ended the night going 3-4 with an RBI, raising his average to .291. Chadwin Stang had the only extra base hit tonight, a 6th inning ground rule double. He added a single to end the night with a 2-5 line. Stang now has hits in 8 of his last 9 games. Since being promoted to AA on June 29, Stang has played in 16 games. He's reached base in 14 of those games. Pitcher Brooks Hall helped himself out with an RBI single in the 2nd. This was the first RBI from a Huntsville pitcher this season. Rene Tosoni reached base 3 times, 1 single and 2 walks. Jason Rogers, in his first game since suffering an upper body injury on July 11th, singled, drew a walk, and scored a run. Final: Helena 7, @Idaho Falls 6

Helena box score

2011 6th-rounder Danny Keller did not have a very good start, lasting just two innings while allowing three runs and posting an unsightly 0/3 K/BB. Tristan Archer calmed things down with three innings of one-run ball, fanning four and walking none.

Michael Ratterree seems to have found his power stroke. He homered for the third straight night, his first three homers of the year. Taylor Brennan also went deep, and Dustin Houle contributed three hits, including a double. Renaldo Jenkins and Angel Ortega had two hits. Omar Garcia did not play after exiting yesterday's game early.

Helena Independent Record on the road game:

After suffering a tough road loss on Thursday, the Helena Brewers bounced back to win the finale in a three-game stretch at Idaho Falls, 7-6, on Friday.

The win gave the Brewers the series and strengthened their hold on the Pioneer League North Division lead. Helena’s in front of Great Falls by two games and third place Missoula by four.

Helena got things started quickly on Friday, thanks to Michael Ratterree’s third homer in as many games. The first-inning shot brought home two, including Angel Ortega, on with a leadoff single.

Idaho Falls answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of a pair of wild pitches from Helena starter Daniel Keller to put up three and take the lead.

The Brewers’ bats continued in the second inning, however, and Ortega connected on his first triple of the season to score Jalen Harris following an Idaho Falls double play. He then came home on a Charlie Markson single.

The Brewers added another run in the third, a solo homer from Taylor Brennan — his fifth of the season.

Idaho Falls didn’t go away, scoring one in the fifth, but Helena responded with two in the top of the sixth, which the Chukars matched in the bottom half of the frame.

And that’s where the score remained, giving Tristan Archer his first professional win. Estevenson Encarnacion pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to earn the save.

Stars Win Second Straight Against Blue Wahoos

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

A night after recording their fourth shutout in the month of July, the Huntsville Stars hung on the beat the Pensacola Blue Wahoos by a score of 3-2 on Friday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

Much like the previous night, the Stars broke out to an early lead that they would not relinquish.

In the second inning, the Stars led off the frame against Blue Wahoos starting pitcher Carlos Contreras with back-to-back singles from third baseman Mike Walker and catcher Shawn Zarraga. After a sacrifice bunt from shortstop Hector Gomez moved both runners into scoring position with one out, Stars starting pitcher Brooks Hall helped out his own cause with an RBI single that plated Walker to put Huntsville on the board.

Unlike Thursday night, the Stars bats were able to have a second offensive breakthrough against the Pensacola pitching staff. Following back-to-back singles from first baseman Jason Rogers and outfielder Rene Tosoni, an RBI groundout from Walker and an RBI single by Zarraga put the Stars up 3-0.

With Hall tossing the last of his inning-mandated four frames, the Blue Wahoos began to chip away at the Stars lead. After the 23-year-old righty retired the first two batters, Pensacola catcher Chris Berset came through with a two-out double. One batter later, an RBI single from first baseman Travis Mattair put the Blue Wahoos on the board.

Two innings later, another two-out rally put Pensacola in striking distance. After shortstop Devin Lohman was hit by a pitch from Stars righty Casey Medlen (W, 3-4), a pinch-hit RBI double from Mike Costanzo scored Lohman to bring the Blue Wahoos deficit to within a run.

Fortunately for the Stars, that was the closest the game would get. Righty Frankie De La Cruz pitched two scoreless innings for Huntsville while reliever Kevin Shackelford sent the Blue Wahoos down in order during the ninth inning for his second save of the season.

Despite stranding 12 runners on base, the Stars offense cranked out 10 hits, led by three singles from Zarraga. Outfielder Chadwin Stang also chipped in with two hits.

For Huntsville, the victory was their second in a row by one run. The Stars are now 9-6 in the month of July, already eclipsing their win total for the entire month of June (8).

On Saturday, the Stars will play game three of a five-game series at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium against Pensacola. Huntsville will send RHP Taylor Jungmann (9-6, 3.56 ERA) to the bump to try to clinch the series victory while Pensacola will counter with RHP Josh Smith (7-8, 3.72). First pitch is at 6:30 PM.

Sounds lose error filled game 9-5 to Zephyrs

Metairie, LA – The Nashville Sounds suffered a 9-5 loss to the New Orleans Zephyrs on Friday evening at Zephyr Field, evening the series at one game apiece.

New Orleans got off to a quick start against Sounds starter Aaron Laffey, sending nine men to the plate during a three-run first inning. Jake Smolinski belted a two-run homer during the frame, his seventh roundtripper of the year.

The Sounds responded with a four-spot in the top of the second inning to take a short-lived 4-3 lead. Three of the four runs against Doug Mathis were unearned following a Kevin Kouzmanoff throwing error.

Kentrail Davis (2-for-5) ripped an RBI single during the inning to extend his hitting streak to six games with Nashville; the outfielder has hit safely in each of his games with the club since a promotion from Double-A Huntsville.

The Zephyrs leveled the contest at 4-4 in the bottom of the second when Gorkys Hernandez led off with a triple and scored on a sac fly before pulling ahead in the fourth with a pair of unearned runs off Laffey resulting from a pair of Sounds errors in the frame.

New Orleans extended its lead to 7-4 in the fifth on Nick Green’s solo homer, the infielder’s fifth big fly of the campaign.

The Sounds got a run back in the seventh against reliever James Leverton when Blake Davis scored on a two-out Robinzon Diaz single, but New Orleans once again answered a Nashville rally with one of its own in the bottom of the frame, plating two runs against Jesus Sanchez on Hernandez’s two-out single to right.

Mathis (5-7) picked up the victory with a quality start for the Zephyrs, allowing one earned run (four runs total) on four hits while striking out seven during his six innings of work. Laffey (4-4) drew the loss for Nashville after giving up six runs (four earned) in his four frames of action.

The teams continue the series with a 6:00 p.m. meeting on Saturday night. Right-hander Johnny Hellweg (7-4, 2.82) will make the start for Nashville and face New Orleans left-hander Duane Below (5-3, 2.39).

AZL Brewers Box Score

Three wins in four games for the A-Crew; 1B David Denson and Stars 1B Jason Rogers are similar in body size, position, and oddly were injured and returned on the same day. Denson homered and was HBP (even his first stolen base) here. 2B Francisco Castillo was 4-for-4 including a double at the bottom of the order; Castillo is tied for the league lead in hits with 32 (but only five walks in 94 AB's). CF Brandon Diaz has had a nice first summer in pro ball, and he hit his first HR in this one. Contributions up and down the lineup, nice, check them out.

5th round RHP Josh Uhen was awarded the win in relief, but it was undrafted LHP Chris Matulis who deserved it. Uhen has walked 15 in 15 innings and has been underwhelming. (Top pick Devin Williams, idle in this one, has walked 12 in 13.2 innings, it should be noted).
