Final: Huntsville 1 Pensacola 0

The first meeting of the 2013 season between the Huntsville Stars and Pensacola Blue Wahoos produced a good, old fashioned pitchers duel. Tonight, Drew Gagnon and 2 Stars relievers combined to shut out the Blue Wahoos 1-0. Gagnon (2-5, 5.67) worked the first 6 2/3 innings tonight, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. Gagnon's strong outing tonight lowered his season ERA from 6.82 to 5.67. Gagnon threw 98 pitches, 58 for strikes and had a 9-3 ground out to fly out ratio. Drew was able to maintain his velocity throughout the game as he was low to mid 90's in the 7th.

One of the newest stars, Brent Leach, came on to relieve Gagnon in the 7th. He finished the 7th and worked a scoreless 8th. He allowed just a walk over his 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Greg Holle was brought on to close things out. He did just that, allowing a walk in a scoreless 9th to earn his 9th save on the season. This was Holle's 4th consecutive scoreless outing and the 3rd consecutive converted save in as many opportunities.

Huntsville Box Score

The Stars were outhit 8-4 but their offense produced the only run of the game. It came in the 1st inning on a Brock Kjeldgaard sacrifice fly. It was Kjeldgaard's 43rd RBI on the season. Brock didn't record a hit tonight, but did draw a walk to go along with his sacrifice fly. Third baseman Shea Vucinich led the Stars offense with 2 hits including a double. Chadwin Stang added a double and Eric Patterson singled for the Stars only other hits tonight. The Stars did draw 5 walks, 2 from Nick Shaw and one each from Rene Tosoni, Brock Kjeldgaard, and pitcher Drew Gagnon.

Huntsville Play By Play

Not the most exciting play, but it produced the only run.

Huntsville Top of the 1st

Chadwin Stang doubles (2) on a line drive to left fielder Donald Lutz.

Nick Shaw out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Daniel Renken to first baseman Travis Mattair. Chadwin Stang to 3rd.

Rene Tosoni walks.

Brock Kjeldgaard out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Donald Lutz in foul territory. Chadwin Stang scores.

Mike Walker strikes out swinging.

Huntsville (11-15 2nd half, 40-54 overall) and Pensacola will go at it again tomorrow night. For the Stars, right Brooks Hall (0-3, 6.31) will take the mound. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 Central with Stars Radio Broadcaster Alex Cohen hitting the air at 6:45 with the pregame show.

Hot Rods motor past Rattlers in the ninth

Wisconsin grabbed 5-4 lead with two in top of the ninth, but can't hold

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

OWLING GREEN, KY - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scrapped and scraped for two runs in the top of the ninth inning to grab a 5-4 lead over the Bowling Green Hot Rods Thursday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. But, the Hot Rods scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a triple by Tommy Coyle to hand Wisconsin a 6-5 defeat. The Rattlers were outhit in the game 14-6. Victor Roache had three of Wisconsin's hits.

Bowling Green (56-39 overall, 18-9 second half) scored first for the second time in the series. Luke Maile singled with two outs in the bottom of the third. Tyler Goedell followed with a triple off the wall in right to score Maile for a 1-0 lead.

Hot Rods starter Dylan Floro retired the first twelve Timber Rattlers batters he faced. Max Walla was the first Wisconsin base runner as he reached on an error to start the fifth. Roache was the first Rattler to collect a hit as he followed with a single. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. An RBI grounder by Garrett Cooper got Walla home with the tying run.

Maile put the Hot Rods back in front in the bottom of the fifth. Leonardo Reginatto singled to start the frame. Maile doubled into the corner in left to drive in Reginatto for a 2-1 lead.

Wisconsin (40-51, 11-15) grabbed their first lead of the series with a pair of runs off Floro in the top of the seventh. Victor Roache destroyed a 2-2 pitch from Floro with one out and none on base to hit his eleventh home run of the season. The ball landed in the grass seating to the left of the batter's eye in center to tie the game 2-2. Mike Garza followed with a single. Cooper doubled down the line in right and Garza chugged around the bases to score the run to put the Rattlers up 3-2.

But, Bowling Green answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. Reginatto doubled with one out off Preston Gainey. Coyle won a long battle with Gainey as he singled to center on a 3-2 pitch to drive in the tying run.

Patrick Leonard gave the Hot Rods the lead again in the bottom of the eighth. He homered to left with one out and nobody on base. That put Bowling Green up 4-3.

The Rattlers rallied with two runs in the top of the ninth inning to go back in front. Roache singled to start the inning and went to second on a wild pitch. Garza drew a walk and another wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third with no outs. Bowling Green reliever Nick Sawyer got the first out of the inning with a strikeout. Then, walked Tyler Roberts intentionally to set up a potential game ending double play.

Chris McFarland sent a chopper to the second baseman and the Hot Rods got the out at second, but McFarland beat the throw to first and Roache scored to tie the game. Pinch runner Alfredo Rodriguez scored the go ahead run when a throw to first on play at first after a tapper in front of the plate off the bat of Orlando Arcia was wild. The Rattlers took that 5-4 lead to the bottom of the ninth.

Gainey walked Andrew Toles to lead off the bottom of the ninth and the Rattlers went to Jono Armold. Reginatto tried to bunt Toles over against Armold, but fouled off two attempts. He would single to left to put two runners on base for Coyle.

Coyle tried to bunt both runners over, but was unsuccessful each time. He eventually worked the count full. Then, Coyle lined the ball just fair inside the line in right. The ball rolled to the corner as both Toles and Reginatto scored the tying and winning runs for the Hot Rods in their 6-5 win.

Game three of the series at Bowling Green Ballpark is Friday night. Eric Semmelhack (1-4, 4.89) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Hot Rods have Reinaldo Lopez (4-4, 2.52) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 7:05pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or the IHeartRadio app starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm.

Final: Brevard County 3, St. Lucie 2

Brevard snaps skid on tenth inning walk-off

Manatees fall behind early, comeback to top St. Lucie 3-2

VIERA, Fla. - An opposite field RBI single from Nick Ramirez that snuck inches inside the third-base line gave the Brevard County Manatees a 3-2 walk-off win in ten innings over the St. Lucie Mets on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium.

It marks the eighth walk-off victory in 47 home games for the Manatees (14-11 second half, 51-41 overall) and the team's fifth extra-inning win. Brevard County also improved its league-best mark in one-run games to 23-12.

Brandon Macias scored the winning run after leading off the bottom of the tenth with a single and then advancing to second on D'Vontrey Richardson's base hit up the middle. Macias finished the night with two base hits and two runs scored, as he was one of three Manatees' with multiple hits. Richardson and Cody Hawn also had two hits each.

Both of Hawn's hits came against St. Lucie (14-11, 51-41) starting pitcher Matt Bowman, making him the only Brevard County player to even have one hit through the first five innings.

Battling rain and a wet mound, Bowman saw trouble in the sixth when he allowed back-to-back singles to Lance Roenicke and Macias and then first baseman Robbie Shields missed the catch on the throw from Bowman on Macias' single, which allowed Roenicke to make it to third base.

From there, he was able to score on Richardson's sacrifice fly. Macias would later score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2.

The Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Brevard County starting pitcher Tyler Cravy (3-1, 2.98 ERA), who was a late fill-in starter, by getting each of their first three men on base. Kyle Johnson singled and T.J. Rivera followed with a double. With both men in scoring position, Jayce Boyd brought them home on a two-run double to right field.

After a one-out single in the first, Cravy settled down to retire 16 consecutive batters before a two-out single off the bat of Dustin Lawley in the top of the sixth.

Cravy finished his night after a season-best six innings, but did not factor in the decision. The starter was charged with just the two runs that came in the first and a total of five hits and zero walks, while striking out three men. Cravy had a chance to be the pitcher of record in the bottom of the sixth, but Brevard County left the bases loaded in that frame.

Brevard County's bullpen combine to allow just one hit over four scoreless innings as the trio of Mark Williams, Tommy Toledo and Stephen Peterson also struck out five. The win was credited to Peterson, moving him to 3-0 on the season.

The loss went to former Major Leaguer Tim Byrdak, who recorded just one out in the tenth with three hits allowed. Bowman made it through the seventh, but also did not take a decision despite allowing just two runs - one earned - on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Brevard County and St. Lucie will continue their four-game set on Friday night, as the series shifts to Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie for a 6:30 p.m. scheduled start.

Due to start on the mound are a pair of lefties, as Jed Bradley (4-3, 4.30 ERA) will get the ball for the Manatees and Alex Panteliodis (4-3, 4.11 ERA) will get the nod for the Mets.

Brevard County Box Score

All 9 Manatees hits were singles. Three BC players finished with 2 hits: D'Vontrey Richardson, Cody Hawn, and Brandon Macias.

In his three starts this season Tyler Cravy has only given up a combined 4 earned runs.

Brevard County Play-by-Play

The WALK-OFF (8th of the year for the 'Tees):

Brevard County Bottom of the 10th

  • -Pitching Change: Tim Byrdak replaces Hamilton Bennett.
-Brandon Macias singles on a fly ball to center fielder Kyle Johnson.
-D' Vontrey Richardson singles on a line drive to center fielder Kyle Johnson. Brandon Macias to 2nd.

So. It's midnight and Helena is down 17-4 in the 7th inning. I'm gonna go ahead and call this one a loss.

Starter Anthony Banda got just two outs and allowed six runs (all unearned). But wait! That's not the most runs allowed by a Brewers pitcher in this game! Lefty Trevor Seidenberger, the Brewers' 12th-round pick in June out of TCU, had a pro debut to forget, letting in seven runs while getting just four outs. Chin up, Trevor: it pretty much cannot get worse.

Michael Ratterree is so far a double short of the cycle for a second straight night; after not homering until yesteday, he's now done so two games in a row.

METAIRIE, La. - After heading into the All-Star Break having lost nine of their last 10 games, the Nashville Sounds got off on the right foot Thursday night at Zephyr Field, winning their first game back by a 3-1 margin over the New Orleans Zephyrs.

After the one-hour and 48-minute rain delay preceding the game, Sounds catcher Robinzon Diaz, 2-for-4, recorded Nashville's first hit of the night in the fourth inning with a single to centerfield. The 29-year-old gave the Sounds a two-run lead in the following inning on a two-out single to right-centerfield that scored two runs.

Nashville's Cole Garner drew a lead-off walk in the fifth inning, and Scooter Gennett and Josh Prince connected for two-out singles to load the bases for Diaz's go-ahead knock.

The Sounds added a run in the sixth inning, playing small ball to plate Kentrail Davis with the safety squeeze to make it 3-0. Davis reached base on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on Garner's bunt single before Stephen Parker got the RBI with his sacrifice bunt.

Starting pitcher R.J. Seidel (2-4) commanded Nashville from the hill, limiting the Z's to four hits and one run, a Kevin Mattison home run in the sixth. The right-hander fanned seven batters and walked none en route to his second victory of the season.

Zach Kroenke came to the mound in the sixth to relieve Seidel, but allowed singles to the next two batters. Michael Olmsted entered to close the inning with a strikeout. Olmsted returned for a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Reliever Kyle Heckathorn also worked a scoreless eighth.

Sounds all-star Rob Wooten entered in the bottom of the ninth and beaned Bryan Petersen to bring the tying run to the plate. One fly out and double-play later, Wooten recorded his 19th save.

Lefty Brian Flynn was charged with the loss for New Orleans, giving up three runs on six hits over six innings of work.

The Sounds will play game two against the Zephyrs Friday night at Zephyr Field. Throwing for Nashville will be LHP Aaron Laffey (4-3, 5.69) opposite the Z's RHP Doug Mathis (4-7, 3.87). Baseball returns to Nashville on Monday, July 22, for Peanut Free Night at Greer, presented by the Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center.

There was a happy ending on Thursday and a little something to put the game in perspective. Matt Erickson’s wife Julie has been getting close to giving birth to their third child. Matt came out on the road and the baby wasn’t due until Tuesday or Wednesday. But, he was ready to head back at a moments notice. The call came in the seventh inning that little Emma couldn’t wait anymore. Matt showed me a picture on his cell phone as we got on the bus and he was still getting the details as we headed back to the hotel. Matt will be heading home tomorrow morning and will rejoin the team next Wednesday when the homestand with Clinton starts. Congratulations to the Ericksons.
