Bowling Green knocks over Wisconsin 6-2

Rattlers denied late rally and Hot Rods score late insurance runs

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Chris McFarland rounds third after his fifth inning home run tied the game with the Bowling Green Hot Rods on July 17, 2013

BOWLING GREEN, KY - First, the Bowling Green Hot Rods broke the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers hearts with a spectacular rally-killing catch to hold onto their one run lead in the top of the eighth. Then, they crushed Wisconsin's spirits with a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. The Hot Rods defeated Wisconsin 6-2 in game one of a three game series at Bowling Green Ballpark on Wednesday night.

The Hot Rods (55-39 overall, 17-9 second half) had two outs and none on in the bottom of the second inning. Marty Gantt singled and stole second. Joey Rickard followed with a single to center and Gantt just beat the throw to the plate to score the first run of the game. The throw home allowed Rickard to take second base. Then, Patrick Leonard singled to knock in Rickard for a 2-0 lead.

Wisconsin (40-50, 11-14) evened the game in the top of the fifth. Parker Berberet drew a walk with one out. Chris McFarland launched a two-run homer to left two pitches later to tie the game 2-2.

Leonard put Bowling Green back in front in the bottom of the seventh inning. He stepped in with runners at first and second with one out and grounded a single through the left side of the infield. Leonardo Reginatto, who started the inning with a bunt single, scored from second on the play and the Hot Rods were up 3-2.

Wisconsin tried to put together a rally in the top of the eighth. McFarland and Alfredo Rodriguez walked to start the frame. Michael Reed tried to bunt the runners along, but he bunted into a force out at third base. Tyrone Taylor was next and he singled sharply to left. But, the ball was hit too hard and Rodriguez had to hold at third base as the Rattlers loaded the bases. Mike Garza's slow chopper to short was cut off by third baseman Tyler Goedell and his throw to the plate was in time for the force out on Rodriguez.

Victor Roache was next and he sent a deep line drive to right field. But, Rickard raced back to the warning track, leapt, and robbed Roache of extra bases with a highlight reel catch to end the inning and maintain the 3-2 lead for the Hot Rods

Bowling Green added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth. Justin O'Conner hit a three-run home run to left and the Hot Rods were up 6-2.

Garton worked a scoreless ninth to nail down the win for the Hot Rods.

Game two of the series is Thursday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. Ryan Gibbard (4-2, 5.20) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Dylan Floro (7-2, 1.73) is set to start for the Hot Rods. Game time is 7:05pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm.

HOME RUNS:

WIS:

Chris McFarland (3rd, 1 on in 5th inning off Blake Snell, 1 out)

BG:

Justin O'Conner (8th 2 on in 8th inning off Leonard Lorenzo, 1 out)

WP: Blake Snell (3-6)

LP: Leonard Lorenzo (2-5)

SAVE: Ryan Garton (7)

TIME: 2:17

ATTN: 2,284

Wisconsin Boxscore

Well the Hot Rods are known for their pitching this season, but they played some damn good defense tonight robbing multiple XBHs from the T-Rats, changing the course of the game.

5 of Victor Roache's last 6 hits have gone for extra bases. Chris was talking about Victor's power displays during batting practice and mentioned that Garrett Cooper matched him, at least for today.

Alfredo Rodriguez and Parker Berberet each added a double.

Neither Austin Ross or Leonard Lorenzo were particularly sharp.

Wisconsin Recap

The first started promising but back to back very good defensive plays killed the inning.

Wisconsin Top of the 1st

  • Alfredo Rodriguez doubles (9) on a fly ball to left fielder Marty Gantt.
Michael Reed lines into a double play, center fielder Andrew Toles to shortstop Leonardo Reginatto. Alfredo Rodriguez doubled off 2nd.
Tyrone Taylor flies out to center fielder Andrew Toles.

Interesting decision here that didn't work out.

Wisconsin Top of the 7th

  • Garrett Cooper singles on a fly ball to right fielder Joey Rickard.
Throwing error by pitcher Blake Snell on the pickoff attempt. Garrett Cooper out at 3rd, first baseman Patrick Leonard to third baseman Tyler Goeddel.
Orlando Arcia grounds out, third baseman Tyler Goeddel to first baseman Patrick Leonard.
Parker Berberet pops out to first baseman Patrick Leonard in foul territory.

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees fell behind early and never could catch up as they dropped Wednesday night's series opener to the St. Lucie Mets at Space Coast Stadium, by the score of 9-3.

St. Lucie led from the get-go, but continued to be patient to be sure that they walked away with the win. A walk started up a two-out rally in the eighth, when the Mets scored a pair off of Santo Manzanillo to push their lead from 4-3 to 6-3.

Three more St. Lucie runs ended up scoring against Dan Meadows in the final frame, during which he hit the leadoff man and later walked four with one hit allowed, but those runs acted only as insurance for the Mets.

Brevard County (13-11 second half, 50-41 overall) used two runs in the sixth to tighten the game, having initially trailed 4-0 at the halfway point. Yadiel Rivera opened the sixth with a single up the middle and then Mitch Haniger was hit by a pitch. Nick Ramirez came up and singled through the right side to score Rivera and move Haniger over to third base. Haniger later scored on a Greg Hopkins fielder's choice.

The Manatees scored their first run in in the bottom of the fifth, after Cody Hawn doubled and was able to cross the plate on a single by Brandon Macias. Hawn's double was Brevard County's only extra-base hit of the night.

In each of the first three innings, the Mets (14-10, 51-40) scored single runs by putting a man on, stealing second base, and getting an RBI hit two batters later. While the formula changed slightly in the fifth, requiring just a single and a ground-rule double, they were able to edge the lead out to 4-0 before Brevard began to score.

Manatees' starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta (0-4, 6.00 ERA) went 4.2 innings for the second straight start, which also matches his longest outing of the season. He was charged with four runs on eight hits. Scarpetta did tie his season-best with four strikeouts and walked just one batter. The one free pass was his fewest since June 30, 2011 with Huntsville.

St. Lucie's Hansel Robles fell just shy of a quality start, leaving with two outs in the sixth and a runner on base after giving up two runs in the frame and three in all. He did not issue a walk, struck out four and surrendered seven hits. Randy Fontanez was the first man out of the bullpen for the Mets and he struck out five of the seven men he faced in 2.1 scoreless frames.

Game two of the series will take place on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Brevard County will send Chad Pierce (5-3, 3.49) to the mound, while Matt Bowman (5-2, 2.75) will get the start for St. Lucie.

Final: Helena 9, @Idaho Falls 5

Helena box score

So, Adam Giacalone can certainly hit in the Pioneer League. With four more hits tonight, Giacalone is 7-11 since his demotion from Wisconsin. Plenty of other Brewers could hit tonight too, as Helena rapped out 17 in total. Besides Giacalone, Michael Ratterree stands out for falling a double short of the cycle; the home was his first as a pro. Every other starter had at least one hit, so check it out.

Zach Quintana had success early only pitching more to contact but was touched up for four runs over the 5th and 6th innings. He finished with just one strikeout but also walked just one while inducing 11 groundouts. You could say he scattered eight hits but he's now allowed 29 of them in his last 17 innings.

Helena play-by-play

Start your day right with a rich, nutritious six-run inning:

Helena Top of the 1st

  • Omar Garcia singles on a line drive to right fielder Elier Hernandez.
  • With Charlie Markson batting, wild pitch by Ashton Goudeau, Omar Garcia to 2nd.
  • With Charlie Markson batting, throwing error by Ashton Goudeau on the pickoff attempt, Omar Garcia to 3rd.
  • Charlie Markson walks.
  • With Michael Ratterree batting, wild pitch by Ashton Goudeau, Omar Garcia scores. Charlie Markson to 2nd.
  • Michael Ratterree triples (2) on a line drive to center fielder Dominique Taylor. Charlie Markson scores.
  • Adam Giacalone singles on a line drive to center fielder Dominique Taylor. Michael Ratterree scores.
  • Jose Pena singles on a line drive to center fielder Dominique Taylor. Adam Giacalone to 3rd.
  • Dustin Houle singles on a ground ball to right fielder Elier Hernandez. Adam Giacalone scores. Jose Pena to 2nd.
  • Angel Ortega singles on a ground ball to shortstop Humberto Arteaga. Jose Pena to 3rd. Dustin Houle to 2nd.
  • Jalen Harris grounds into a double play, first baseman Cody Stubbs to catcher Beau Maggi to first baseman Cody Stubbs. Jose Pena out at home. Dustin Houle to 3rd. Angel Ortega to 2nd.
  • Renaldo Jenkins singles on a line drive to right fielder Elier Hernandez. Dustin Houle scores. Angel Ortega scores.
  • Pitching Change: Josiel Martinez replaces Ashton Goudeau.
  • Omar Garcia grounds into a force out, second baseman Carlos Garcia to shortstop Humberto Arteaga. Renaldo Jenkins out at 2nd.

Goudeau entered the game with a 13.21 ERA. It's hard to make your ERA go up when it's already 13.21, but he managed it. On the other hand, he deserves a RTI (run thrown in) for plating Garcia all by himself.
