Nick Ramirez named FSL Player of the Week

Brevard slugger hit .526 with five extra base hits and eight RBI last week

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. – The Florida State League announced on Monday that Brevard County Manatees first baseman Nick Ramirez was named the league’s player of the week for the period of July 8-14.

In five games last week, Ramirez hit .526 (10-for-19) with two home runs, three doubles, eight runs batted in and seven runs scored. Ramirez had a .571 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage in those five games.

Ramirez had two four-hit games last week; once on July 9 at home against Clearwater and again on July 12 on the road at Palm Beach. He has also driven in at least one run in each of the last five games.

The 2013 FSL midseason All-Star enters play on Monday, ranked second in the FSL with 18 home runs. Ramirez is one homer away from tying the Brevard County single-season record of 19, which was set by Hunter Morris in 2011.

The 23-year-old from Chino Hills, Calif. is also fourth in the league with 61 RBI and 159 total bases. The 2013 FSL Home Run Derby Champion also ranks ninth in runs scored (47) and is tied for ninth in slugging percentage (.489).

Ramirez is in his third professional season and was drafted in the fourth round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Brewers out of Cal State Fullerton.

Rattlers pounce on Captains mistake to pick up win

Hellweg goes six innings & strikes out four in 6-2 win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers took advantage of a sixth inning error by the Lake County Captains and a start by Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Johnny Hellweg to defeat the Captains 6-2 on Monday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Hellweg tossed six innings and allowed two runs while striking out four to earn the win. The Rattlers scored four unearned runs after the sixth inning error to build a 6-0 lead on the way to victory.

The Rattlers (40-49 overall, 11-13 second half) broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the second. Mike Garza singled with one out and moved to second base with one out. Victor Roache doubled to drive in Garza for a 1-0 lead. Max Walla followed with a single that drove in Roache for a 2-0 lead.

Walla's fly ball to right was dropped to start the bottom of the sixth inning. Adrian Williams doubled down the left field line and Walla scored all the way from first base for a 3-0 advantage. Michael Reed was at the plate with two outs in the inning and sent a grounder up the middle. The ball hit the second base bag and deflected away from the middle infielders for a base hit that scored Williams. Tyrone Taylor tripled and Reed scored for a 5-0 lead. Garrett Cooper capped the inning with a single to get Taylor home to make the score 6-0.

The Captains (36-55, 13-11) loaded the bases against Hellweg in the top of the sixth inning. He walked the leadoff batter, gave up a one out single, and walked another batter on a 3-2 pitch with two outs. Anthony Santander popped an 0-1 pitch from Hellweg to shallow left for what appeared to be the third out. But, the ball was lost in the Sun and dropped in untouched for a two-run single.

Hellweg bounced back to get a strikeout for the final out of the sixth. He went six innings, allowed five hits, walked two, and struck out four to put himself in position for the win.

Taylor Wall closed out the game with three scoreless innings from the Wisconsin bullpen. Wall struck out three and earned his fifth save of the season.

Reed paced Wisconsin's 10-hit attack with three singles. Reed pushed his current hitting streak to eight games. He is 15-for-36 (.417) during the streak.

Wisconsin won two of the three games in the series with the Captains. They wrapped up their six-game homestand with a 4-2 record.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday. They return to action with game one of a three game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Austin Ross makes his 2013 Timber Rattlers debut as the scheduled starting pitcher. Bowling Green runs Blake Snell (2-6, 4.06) is set to start for the Hot Rods. Game time on Wednesday is 7:05pm. Tune in for the action on AM1280, WNAM or the IHeartRadio app starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Day games are nice from a LR perspective because I can wrap up before I even get home from work, but they stink considering I have no opportunity to listen to the game.

Johnny Hellweg was alright, he would have went 6 scoreless with a better play on that last out in the 6th, was it ultimately a Michael Reed or Adrian Williams issue? Hellweg pretty much did what he does in the minors, limit hits, limit runs, nothing earth shattering from a K standpoint.

Reed and Michael Garza had the multi-hit games, Victor Roache and Adrian Williams doubled, Tyrone Taylor added the triple.

Taylor Wall is having a heck of a season, he'll be interesting to follow as he progresses.

(Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

JUPITER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees had their five-game winning streak snapped in the first game of Monday's doubleheader at Roger Dean Stadium to the Palm Beach Cardinals on a walk-off single.

With the game tied 1-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Brevard County (13-9 second half, 50-39 overall) reliever Tommy Toledo entered the game for his first appearance since June 25 and first since being activated from the disabled list.

The Cardinals (14-9, 43-48) led off the frame with a single to center by Alex Mejia and then Adam Lewis advanced Mejia over to second on a sacrifice bunt. Anthony Garcia then came in to pinch hit for Ronny Gil, but he would be retired on a ground out for the second out of the inning.

Colin Walsh would be the hero for Palm Beach as his single to right scored Mejia and handed the 'Tees their eighth loss in 25 games against South division opponents this season.

Brevard County starting pitcher Brent Suter (7-5, 2.79 ERA) turned in yet another quality start as he allowed just one unearned run, which came in the first inning.

Walsh led off the frame with a single and then moved to second as David Popkins reached on a throwing error by third baseman Brandon Macias. Walsh would then move to third on a fly out and then score on a ground out off the bat of Jonathan Rodriguez.

Suter shut the Cards down the rest of the night as he went six innings total and allowed three hits, while walking two and striking out four.

The Manatees scattered eight hits throughout the night but the biggest one game in the top of the third when Mitch Haniger hit a two-out, solo homer to left to tie the game up. Haniger went 2-for-3 on the night for his third consecutive two-hit game.

Brevard County had a chance in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead as the reigning FSL Player of the Week, Nick Ramirez, led the frame off with a double down the right field line. Ramirez continued his hot hitting as he went 3-for-3 and is batting .459 (17-for-37) in his last ten games.

Ramirez would then move to third after Cameron Garfield flew out to center. With the go-ahead run 90 feet away, the 'Tees were not able to capitalize though as back-to-back groundouts to the pitcher from Greg Hopkins and Macias ended the threat.

Helena box score

Lots of offense today--the teams combined for 25 hits. Excellent games by, among others, Omar Garcia, who was 4-5, and Adam Giacalone, who doubled, singled, and walked twice while driving in four runs. Giacalone hit .317/.394/.425 with Helena last year so we should expect lots of success from him (hopefully with more power this time around).

Garcia and Charlie Markson set the table well at the top of the order, reaching base seven times between them and scoring six runs. Honorable mention, literally, to Michael Ratterree for gunning down a run at the plate from right field.

Terrible start for Barrett Astin; the third-rounder allowed six runs and eleven baserunners while failing to escape the 4th. In constrast, Astin's partner in crime, Taylor Williams, finally had an excellent game, posting a 6/0 K/BB en route to allowing one run in four innings of work.

Brevard blanked in twinbill finale

Manatees three-hit by Cards in second game of double dip

Brevard County starting pitcher Jacob Barnes, seen here in a game from earlier this season, threw a six-inning complete game, but it was in a losing effort as the Manatees were blanked 1-0 by the Palm Beach Cardinals in the second game of Monday night's doubleheader at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

JUPITER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees could only muster three hits in the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Palm Beach Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium.

Brevard County (13-10 second half, 50-40 overall) starting pitcher Jacob Barnes (6-3, 3.31 ERA) threw a six-inning complete game, but it was in a losing effort as the Cardinals (15-9, 44-48) scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.

A one-out double by David Popkins and then a RBI single off the bat of Jonathan Rodriguez two batters later would plate the only run of the contest and would be all that Palm Beach would need.

Barnes yielded seven hits in his six hits of work, while walking just one and striking out two.

The 'Tees could not solve Cardinals' starting pitcher Ryan Sherriff as the southpaw held Brevard to just two hits and a walk in his 5.2 innings of work. Ronnie Shaban earned the save in the final 1.1 innings for Palm Beach.

Brandon Macias, Greg Hopkins and Lance Roenicke recorded the only Brevard County hits.

The loss marked the seventh time that the 'Tees have been shutout this season.

After an off day on Tuesday, Brevard County will open a four-game series with the St. Lucie Mets (13-10, 50-40).

The Manatees will host the first two games of the set on Wednesday and Thursday and then the series will shift to Port St. Lucie on Friday and Saturday.

Hellweg finds his rhythm with Timber Rattlers

by Ricardo Arguello, Post-Crescent media

GRAND CHUTE — And now, Johnny Hellweg waits.

The 24-year-old pitcher, recently optioned to the minor leagues by the Milwaukee Brewers, pitched six innings, allowing six hits and two runs in getting the 6-2 victory for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in a Midwest League game against the Lake County Captains.

Monday afternoon’s win at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium was a nice bounce-back for Hellweg, who had compiled a 0-3 record and 10.97 ERA for the Brewers this season.

“I threw some good pitches. The off-speed was the big part of today’s outing,” Hellweg said. “I thought I executed pretty well. Just trying to get back out there again.

“I was pretty focused today and had some goals that I tried to execute and I felt I did that well enough. Just try to build off that next time.”

And that’s the big question for the Brewers. Did Hellweg do enough to earn a trip back to the big leagues or will the powers-that-be decide he needs more time at the minor league level?

The answer may not come for several days as Hellweg takes some time off for the major league All-Star Game.

“I thought he executed pretty good,” Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson said. “At the beginning of the game, it looked like there was a definite feel-out period, like he was feeling for some pitches and throwing for some strikes a little bit.

But once he got in there, he got into a nice little rhythm. His breaking ball was getting over for strikes and it looked like he got into the competitive flow there.”

Hellweg pitched five strong innings in warm, humid conditions, with the radar gun registering his fastball consistently in the 94-to-96 mph range. He struck out four and walked two.

He worked himself out of a few jams early, but said he said his main goal was to work on getting his off-speed pitches over for strikes.

“I was just going out there trying to work on some stuff,” he said. “Trying to treat some of the guys like different hitters. Just trying to execute some pitches as if they were different guys.”

The Timber Rattlers (40-49 Midwest League, 11-13 second half) gave the rangy Hellweg some support with two runs in the second on a RBI double from Victor Roache and an RBI single from Max Walla.

Wisconsin added four runs in the fifth. Walla reached on an error and scored on Adrian Williams’ double for a 3-0 lead. With two outs, a grounder up the middle from Michael Reed caromed off second base for a hit that scored Williams.

Tyrone Taylor ripped a triple that scored Reed and Garrett Cooper completed the scoring with an RBI single and a 6-0 lead.

Taylor also had a sensational diving catch to register the final out of the game.

“He’s been that guy for us consistently,” Erickson said. “He brings a lot to the table defensively and at the plate he’s had a nice month-and-a-half as he continues to grow with his development. He’s a guy that has some tools.”

Hellweg did run into some trouble in the sixth inning. That’s when Lake County loaded the bases with two outs and Anthony Santander’s pop-up was lost in the sun by the Rattlers’ infield, allowing two runs to score on the error.

Hellweg registered a strikeout to end the inning. Taylor Wall hurled three scoreless innings to get his fifth save.

“Delivery-wise, he was a lot better, and competing-wise,” Wisconsin pitching coach David Chavarria said of Hellweg. “Sometimes it’s just one of those things where you need to get in little bit of a groove. Just like a hitter, you get into a bit of a slump and you start overthinking a little bit at times and pitchers go through the same thing.

“Sometimes it’s an outing and you get back into that groove and the momentum and all those feelings that you had before, when you were really going well, all of a sudden it triggers and you figure something out and I think that’s what happened today.”
